Stupid, and doubtless to receive plenty of attention since it’s useful to so many groups. The left will use it as a Larger Truth about the NRA; the media will use it to find some racial subtext that isn’t actually there; and righteous conservative bloggers will use it to gently suggest that perhaps Huck isn’t VP material.
Way to help gun owners shed those stereotypes of being reckless and/or deranged, though.
During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee — who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain — joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.
“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he’s getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”
Melodramatic exit question from the comments to the CNN post: “Is this a man of God?”
Update: Headlines comments imported.
Update: Well, this makes things nice and easy for Russert, at least.
Update: It comes at around the halfway point. The silence is excruciating. Click the image to watch.
Update: Huck makes amends:
“I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama,” the statement said. “I apologize that my comments were offensive. That was never my intention.”

At the NRA convention, no less.
Thanks, Huck!

Ghastly. What a loser. Try to engage more than one brain cell at a time, Huck.
Fortunately, Obama won’t mind. Just file it away under ‘Crazy Things Pastors Say’.
Spirit of 1776 on May 16, 2008 at 3:30 PM
Huck’s a real funny guy. Of course, now he’ll have to apologize 2 or 3 times in the national spotlight, to gain a little more face time and some more speaking engagements.

He was probably just trying to make a joke about Obama fearing guns and not understanding guns, and he phrased it very inartfully.
He should have said something along the lines of, Somebody walked past him with their vintage whatever rifle and he dove for the floor when he saw it”. Or better yet, he should have stuck to his scripted comments. :-)

The biggest problem with this is that he totally let slip the vast right wing conspiracy to assassinate Obama. I suspect Huck will have a “fatal heart attack” by the end of the week, if you know what I mean.

Proving once again that NONE of the Republican candidates that stayed in the race much past ‘Super Tuesday’ should be considered for the position of Dog-Catcher in ‘Shelbyville’, much less as for President of the United States.

I was trying for the life of me to figure out why Huckabee wasn’t going to challenge Mark Pryor (no Republican is for that matter). I assumed he had a lock on a Veep spot, apparently not. The thing is that I really like Huckabee, he is from a state that we could take (assuming that Clinton will actually draw Democrats in at the end). Huckabee was ideal. Well, he may have just ended it, it was a dumb comment, certainly not something that he can’t recover from, but pretty bad. Well, Obama can recover from an endorsement from Hamas, being chums with Ayers, and his preacher being a maniacal racist. Maybe Huckabee could pull this off.
However, I am thinking that it will be someone else, preferably from Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, or Virginia. I like Charlie Crist. Oh well, we need a Republican President to combat the oncoming 50 seat majority by the Democrats in the House, and 4 seat majority in the Senate (the Senate looks more positive, we will lose Va, NH, Or, and NM, but we will take La). No time for gloom and doom. We need to find a way to turn Iraq around in the mind of the nation (I think that drawing the number of troops down in half would be a good start).
Remember, businessmen support the GOP in numbers, we have 4 of the 20 richest men in the country giving big to the Republicans, and the Dems have 0. The people who create most wealth in the US support those who don’t want to destroy it. (Surprise!)
We have a fighting chance, the Democrats are clearly wrong most of the time, we just need to find a way to prove we are right, a few populist views might be a good start (like our bizarre policy of not punishing illegals and those who employ them).
OK I am truly sorry for ranting, but I don’t have a blog and I have a lot to say.

Only problem with that is that even before he went into politics, his verbal ability was part of his profession.
This, IMO, is the real problem:
I would also like to point out that most of the evangelicals on this board (including Bryan) were not on board for Huck, so to speak :-), until registration opened at a crucial time during the primaries and the Huckabees jumped into the arena.

Judging by the context I think he was just being sarcastic and I thought it was funny. I’m thinking this is just more manufactured outrage because people don’t like Huck.
Darth Executor on May 16, 2008 at 4:19 PM
I hope for his sake he was quoted inaccurately - just an additional word or two might have softened the remarks somewhat. I’m sad to admit that I suspect that’s more or less exactly what he said. Anyway, there’s no good excuse for bringing up the subject.
As for the VP talk, for a brief moment it seemed to some like a good idea, but I don’t think it was ever more than a campfire story for a certain brand of hard right conservatives to scare each other with.

Is it so hard to remember that, in this case, you are representing gun rights advocates and need to put the cause first?

amerpundit on May 16, 2008 at 4:43 PM

Slublog on May 16, 2008 at 4:44 PM
One of the things required of somebody who wants to lead is that he knows what is acceptable speech and what is not acceptable speech.
You have to say what you mean and mean what you say. Why do you think George Bush speaks so slowly when in public (He is much more fluid in private)? It is to avoid this sort of stupidity.
This is unacceptable to everybody but those blinded by the light from the halo above Huck’s head.
EJDolbow on May 16, 2008 at 4:44 PM

The Huckabee macaca moment…
I think that Huckabee is simply tone deaf and in love with the sound of his own voice. He has this attitude of what’s-not-to-like-about-me that is a real turnoff.
The best kind of humor is self-deprecating. Huckabee spends his efforts of juvenile, not even sly, humor at the expense of others.
For a person appealing to the NRA with the “we want less government”, I have to wonder about his desire to intrude on our eating and smoking habits, among other issues.

Does not everyone here know that we are not allowed, under any circumstances, to insult the wonderful character of the almighty Hussein?
We are NOT allowed to talk about his islamism, his just racism against the evil white devils, his beautiful and fair communism, his virtue of being blackmailed by terrorists, his compassionate traits such as cowardice and moral relativity regarding the truth, his al qaeda connections(which make him better fit to end terrorism), his attempts to islamize kenya, or his cocaine and cigarette addictions….
