Yeah, I grew out of liking Japanamation when everyone kept telling me my first year in film school that I had to sit through the laughably bad Japanese-language version of that old Space Crusier Yamato series to “get it,” that Hayao Miyazaki was the greatest artist of the 20th century, and that Akira would eventually win the Academy Award for “Best Film Ever Made.”

They were all high–I was not.

My friend has made plenty of money directing voice overs for translated Japanimated content for a company in Ft. Worth but after a few beers away from work he admits the writers of even the “more mature” original Japanimated content are not the greatest; it’s convoluted, illogical, lazy, and hard to swallow storytelling covered by a sugary coating of gimmicky animated tricks.

Which, of course, circles right back around and brings us back to George Lucas’ content output for the past ten years.

So let me see if I have this right: you listen to straight music but watch gay movies? Does that make you bisexual?

Tell you what–why don’t you jump on your Pink Floyd “Vote Obama” pig and fly away. I promise I won’t tell anyone.

I promise not to seek litigation since there would be no point as you cannot sue a dead man.

The man has clearly lost it. But for you cinema and home theater junkies out there, let’s give the guy his due.

He was the one (along with Tomlinson Holman) who forced theater owners to start showing movies in something other than a badly lit, noisy, cramped shoe box on a tiny screen with a pair of blown out speakers for a sound system. It was his influence on the THX Certification that has led to some pretty darn awesome sound and visuals in our cinemas and in our own living rooms.

speaking of Disc World, someone did make ‘The Hogfather’ and it’s out on DVD now.. it was pretty good.. Also, ‘The Color of Magic’ ‘The Light Fantastic’ has just been made into a mini-series for the BBC as well.. should be on DVD here soon..

Hogfather freaking rocked. Color of Magic…I don’t know. I actually liked Rincewind a lot more in Interesting Times; Cohen and the Silver Horde would be good for the fight scenes but I don’t know if they could carry the whole movie…I tell you if they really wanted a Pratchett book that would translate well to the big screen, they’d take one of the Sam Vimes books; only bad thing about his stories though is they all build on each other. The pacing though is good; they’re action packed, lots of great characters. Course, I don’t know how big he is over here. A few years ago they had Discworld meet ups; basically, readers would get together, have coffee and talk Pratchett. There were 3 of us registered in Austin. There had to be 4…it never happened. Sigh.
As to Lucas, he’s a giant tool when it comes to stories and casting (how you could cast that giant blonde douchebag as Darth Vader is completely beyond me)but he does some pretty wicked special effects. And even 30 years later, I still have fun watchin the old movies. He’s not completely beyond redemption.
