I wonder where he got that idea? Oh, yeah!

Both CNN and Barack Obama sound outraged that George Bush might conclude that Obama wants to offer a program of appeasement to Iran, North Korea, and other dictatorships. Speaking in Israel on the 60th anniversary of that nation’s independence, Bush warned that people still have not learned that negotiations with genocidal lunatics produces nothing but more genocide. Hitler proved it in 1939, but 69 years later, some still live in a pre-Munich mindset:
And as Allahpundit noted, from Obama’s own website:
Without preconditions. That means without Iran guaranteeing anything, let alone the big prize of their nuclear program. Gibbs’ statement makes absolutely no sense in context of Bush’s remarks or Obama’s previous statements. If Iran gave up its nuclear weapons program today, Bush would open diplomatic contacts with Iran and might even consider a summit. He’s made that very clear over the last few years, holding out WTO sponsorship and normalized relations in exchange for just that concession. If Obama now says he won’t meet with Iran until they surrender their nuclear-weapons program, how exactly does that differ from Bush? And how does that fit with his previous statements about having talks “without preconditions”?
Beyond that, Obama has never explained how talks with Ahmadinejad would convince Iran to stop being, well, the lunatic mullahcracy that it is. Instead of supporting the grassroots efforts at real reform, Obama would simply give credence to the sham “reformers” the Guardian Council approves as part of its oppressive control over the political process in Iran. Meeting with Ahmadinejad, who has held regional conferences extolling a world without Israel or the US, would give the hard-liners a boost in stature while reducing our credibility with Iranians looking to rid themselves of the mullahcracy and establish real representative government. They don’t want us to bomb Iran into submission, but they also don’t want us to abandon them for a Neville Chamberlain-like illusory diplomatic exchange that changes nothing.
If Gibbs wants to eliminate the confusion on these points, then he needs to start with Barack Obama, who apparently has no clue what preconditions mean. Maybe he should have learned that before running for President.
Update: CNN changed its Political Ticker post to remove the Gibbs quotation, but here it is in another link:
GIBBS: No, John, let’s not confuse precondition with preparation. Obviously these meetings would be full of preparation. But if we’re not going to sit down and engage Iran, unless or until they give up their nuclear weapons program, how are we ever going to sit down with them to get them to give up their nuclear weapons program?
But Obama now says that he won’t meet with them until they give up funding terrorists and put aside their nuclear program. Those are (reasonable) preconditions, not preparation. Further, the EU has had meetings with Iran for five years, with our support and with offers of WTO sponsorship by the US as benefits, and Iran still hasn’t given up nukes or terror funding. How will Obama’s meeting with Ahmadinejad produce different results — unless Obama has further concessions in mind? That’s what McCaon wants to know, and what American voters should know before the elections.

J_Gocht, do you recall any of the statements made about Iraqi WMD by officials of the Clinton Administration during Clinton’s 8 years in office? Do you recall the UNSCOM material balance estimates (all those non-zero numbers) for Iraq’s WMD programs? Do you remember the specific reasons why we were told we hit Al-Shifa? Do you remember where Richard Clarke said bin Laden would go if the Pakistani intelligence establishment tipped him off to airstrikes?
Bush did not create the Iraq WMD narrative out of nothing.

“We know for a fact, physical evidence, soil samples of VX precursor–chemical precursor at the site. Secondly, Wolf, direct evidence of ties between Osama bin Laden and the Military Industrial Corporation–the al Shifa factory was part of that. This is an operation–a collection of buildings that does a lot of this dirty munitions stuff. And, thirdly, there is no evidence that this precursor has a commercial application. So, you combine that with Sudan support for terrorism, their connections with Iraq on VX, and you combine that, also, with the chemical precursor issue, and Sudan’s leadership support for Osama bin Laden, and you’ve got a pretty clear cut case.”
Ambassador Bill Richardson, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, CNN’s “Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer,” August 30, 1998.

It’s not just me Chuck…consider this for another opinion.
Perhaps a you’ll get a little “chuck”le at this…?
Are you laughing, Chuck…?
J_Gocht on May 15, 2008 at 1:33 PM
What did I say Doc?
Do you recall how, after the fact; the Bush Administration tried to assuage their dissemination of false propaganda for instigating a war…[by] blaming the British and Israeli intelligence and the Clinton Administration for making the same foolish mistakes?
J_Gocht on May 15, 2008 at 1:42 PM
You’re talking about Bush like he’s sui generis when it comes to the WMD case against Iraq. Clearly he’s not. What I posted also goes to the question of whether it was in fact “false propaganda.”
I get tired of people trying to paint the picture that no one in official Washington believed Iraq had WMD until Bush put on his wizard’s robes and made it so. That’s a lie, plain and simple.
DrSteve on May 15, 2008 at 1:50 PM
I guess “some” people are okay with leaving people like Sadam Hussien in power. A man who repeatedly invaded his neighbors, engaged in true torture, threatened the entire world (not just the U.S.) through support for international terrorism, not to mention wanted to blackmail the world by controlling the majority of the proven oil reserves in the world.
Much better to have someone like that in power than to have to listen to the evil Bushitler tell “lies” about WMD’s that existed in the minds of nearly every developed nation as well as the previous U.S. administrations.
Now, if I may be so bold as to quote the praise-worthy Olberman:
“Shut the hell up!”
Fatal on May 15, 2008 at 1:57 PM
Right on, Doc!
Why olde George Tenant his own self said, with respect to WMD; “Slam dunk!”
Whilst, some other wag once said you couldn’t be fooled…?
J_Gocht on May 15, 2008 at 2:08 PM
Oh please, not that tired leftist meme again! It wasn’t just Bushitler or his administration that believed Saddam had WMD’s, Clinton and his administration along with many other nation’s intelligence agencies swore up and down they thought Saddam had WMD’s!
Please think of something original to say instead of regurgitating the same old lame leftard talking points because it’s getting old and only goes to prove you are uninformed.
In addition, there are many agencies that believe the WMD’s Saddam had were moved to the mountainous regions of Syria in the lead up to the US invasion in 2003. It is my understanding our agencies as well as other nation’s agencies have many sat photos showing numerous vehicles leaving Iraq and driving into Syria in the months leading up to the invasion. These sat photos I’m certain are classified and we (US citizens) don’t have to know everything nor should we especially when providing such information to the general public could compromise any future operations or provide our enemies insight into how we gather our information.
Just like in poker it’s not wise to give your opponent a “tell” and I’m certain our agencies and other government agencies have a hole card when it comes to Syria and the WMD’s they gladly took off of Saddam’s hands.
These agencies will one day use this information to back Syria into a corner and force them to show their hand and when that day comes I will (at every opportunity) be sure to throw this in the face of everyone (including you J Gocht) that ever uttered the phrase “Bush lied and people died” or in any way helped keep the “WMD’s was a lie” meme alive!
Liberty or Death on May 15, 2008 at 2:22 PM
I agree…I absolutely concur!
One can always hope the next administration will understand all the tragic historical mistakes and assessments of our “intelligence” agencies, previous administrations and foreign intelligence services; and get the hell out of Iraq and concentrate on Afghanistan!
“Hope springs eternal.”

When people (ie Bush) just quote facts and make reasonable conclusions why does it cause such a flap? Could it be that the democrats recognize the total weakness of their candidate?
duff65 on May 15, 2008 at 2:50 PM
The problem with a leader to leader summit without preconditions with any of these characters is you’re confering status onto some whackjob while getting nothing in return. You’re starting out way behind. Most likely all you’ll get is a photo of Obamessiah (PBUH) with Mr. Iran Whackjob and/or Mr. Venezuela Whackjob and/or Mr. North Korea Whackjob or even with Mr. Hamas Whackjob.

It’s not just President Bush’s war policy that’s in tatters; he’s run our economy into a rather deep ditch.
The Fed should be bailing out “Connie and Freddy” and let “BS” go in the toilet.

How many times has he said something he has to back away from later–I’ve lost track. I wish I had been keeping a log. The Democrats’ Indignation over President Bush’s remarks in Israel are quite telling.
1) Laughable that Nancy Pelosi would weigh in on what’s appropriate while on an overseas trip after she thew an Hermes scarf around her head to sidle up to Bashar Al-Asad of Syria.
2) Lastly and perhaps most telling… where was Waffles Kerry, Hair Plugs Biden, Nitwit Nancy and the rest of the Democrats with their indignation about “inappropriate comments made on foreign soil” when CONGRESSMAN JIM MCDERMOTT WAS CALLING BUSH A LIAR WHILE STANDING IN IRAQ… ON A TRIP PAID IN PART BY SADAAM HUSSEIN???

Pathetic, butt-sniffing lefty. You are entitled to your own (idiotic) opinions, but you are not entitled to your own facts. The intelligence which led the leftist, anti-American UN to condemn Iraq is the same intelligence that both Clinton and Gore, Kerry and Halfbright, Ashley Clark, the Brits and the French used in analyzing the threat from Hussein.
Repeating your incorrect and juvenile statements only further discredit you, J_Cock.

For someone who’s running for President of the United States, he seems terribly thin-skinned. Does he think he’s going to be baking cookies in a kitchen if he gets elected? He needs to grow up before running for office. What a wimp!

Obombem, must face reality that you cannot deal with others whose main goal in life is to take you out in anyway possible even using their own body as the weapon of choice.
Obombem must talk to hostage negotiators who will tell you there is a point when further talking is useless and the enemy must be taken out. The point of removing the cancer is before the “Stockholm” effect sets in.
