It won’t do any good. At this point, who would believe them?
Look on the bright side: It only took six years to get from the Watergate wipeout to Reagan. What could go wrong?

Squid Shark on May 14, 2008 at 11:35 PM
Well personally, were I in a firefight I’d rather have Ollie by on my side. He’s been there before, and since he retired from the Marines he’s made more then ten trips into Iraq to be with and interview the troops. He’s not a Green Zone Weenie. He’s not afraid to go to the battle instead of letting the battle come to him.

I will be honest about this. I am not trying to be difficult. I simply can not understand how Republicans can turn their backs on the troops. What next? Will you parrot the Democrats and say you are not turning your backs on them…you are saving them?
It makes the arguments about McCain’s lack of conservative credentials seem banal.
Terrye on May 14, 2008 at 11:36 PM
I would agree, but just because I would like him in a firefight does not mean I would let him anywhere near nuclear weapons or the apparatus of state.

Teddy Roosevelt certainly did not endorse illegal immigration and he urged immigrants to learn english.

Yeah, because handing the White House to Obama will, let’s see….er, make him Commander in Chief and put him in office with strong majorities in both houses of Congress. Brilliant!

Deportation:
Did McCain say that rank and file American soldiers are routinely using torture? No, he did not. The fact that he does not like waterboarding, something that has only been used three times and not for several years…does not mean he is impugning the troops.
And if you let Obama win, then you might as well replace the Statue of Liberty’s torch with a white flag.
Terrye on May 14, 2008 at 11:42 PM
But that is so yesterday Gringo. But do not worry as soon it will be back to just one language it just won’t be English this time. So aprender espanol y votar a favor de Juan!

What makes leaders in a representative democracy different than you and I is, if they don’t decide one way or the other, nothing gets done. They can’t just sit in the corner with their teddy bear and pout. To get things done, they have to compromise. If you can’t stomach compromise, you might not be cut out for civilization. That said, there are things to go to war over, but McCain’s imperfections are certainly not one of them.

Idea! Get McCain to grasp this concept, and tell him to quit fragging his own damn side.
This is one of my big problems with McCain, its never enough to disagree with him, he’s gotta make it as miserable as he can, he’s gotta go on Meet the Press and twist the blade. He’s gotta trash the NCGOP when he hadn’t even watched the damn commercial. Did he make a phone call and ask them to not play the commercial? No, he held a f*cking press conference!
doubleplusundead on May 14, 2008 at 11:46 PM
This is good example of political discussion–not “true conservatism” as a religious cult. Terrye and I agree in our rinoceros-ness yet we strongly disagree about illegal immigration. That’s the way politics works. And I think that’s really cool! It says we have to use our brains to work out new answers, rather than our brains being useless as all answers have already been given.

Decent candidates wouldn’t have to cut ties with anybody. The truth is that the 3 folks who just lost the special elections were all terrible candidates. The dem party found better people to run in those elections, and it’s not a surprise that the better man won each time.
Hysterical screaming and turning against the party won’t help anything…but maybe increase Levin’s ratings among those who love his unhinged ranting style.
I have a family member who was same rank as Oliver North in the Pentagon and worked quite closely with Central America at the time. He says North is a bold faced, shameless liar (among other less kind things). This person is a staunch Republican, so it’s not political party differences that cause a personal bias either. Just FWIW.

The leader of the RNC is Bush. If Bush was so great on the war why the hell are we still fighting it? It has taken Bush longer to pacify one country than it took FDR to pacify the world. why does Bush allow another country to kill our soldiers? Bush is the wrose liberal president we have ever had. He makes LBJ look like a tight fisted spender. I’m tired of the entire Republican party. The elites have ruined the party. they hate Reagan and all he stood for. the dems are no better probably worse but when you have to snakes trying to bite you does it really matter which finally kills you. during Reagan the rep party was the American party, the dems were the out of touch elite party. Now we have both parties out of touch. every time I think about sending money to McCain he opens his mouth. Every time I think of staying home BHO opens his. It is a sad, sad world where you have no respect for your leaders, and know in your heart that most of the elected people in washington are as stupid as Forest Gump.
Example. Senator on CNBC was talking about SPR vote. The anchor asked if we bought the oil at avg price of $24 wouldn’t it be good to sell it at $125. the Senator said that that was above his pay-grade. Do you understand what that means. the Senator doesn’t understand the concepts of profit, supply and demand, controlling the battlefront. How can we hope as a nation that our leaders will bring down prices when they have no idea what/how to do it. No imagination. Nothing. We should be selling all 700m bls of oil at $125 flooding the market causing a glut of oil on the market and pushing the price down to $60.00 then buying the crap back at $60 or at $10.00. Screw Chavez and Iran, russia, and the entire Middle east. the instablity caused by oil going from $125 to $10 will cause mass uprisings in Iran, South America and Russia. Three of our enemies destoyed from within by simply selling our oil to the highest bidder. Not only that but the rev from the sale would cause great parts of our debt to be wiped out. then once the oil SPR is depleted the gov can cite national security as a reason to drill for more oil.

I think that this thread has gone off on a misaligned twist. I both feel the way that I wrote, and also agree with Levin.
Levin isn’t saying, “Don’t vote for McCain” (IMHO).
He’s saying to Congressional candidates “Disassociate yourself with McCain, and run as conservatives”, which I believe is sound advice.
I think Levin will vote, and vote for McCain, if for the SCOTUS alone.

Illegal Aliens need to be deported. No more tax dollars for benefits to Illegal Aliens and their Anchor Babies. Entering the U.S. without being inspected by an immigration officer makes you a criminal…
DfDeportation on May 15, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Illegal Immigration is a Crime
Under Title 8 Section 1325 of the U.S. Code, “Improper Entry by Alien,” any citizen of any country other than the United States who:
• Enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers; or
• Eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers; or
• Attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact;
has committed a federal crime.
Violations are punishable by criminal fines and imprisonment for up to six months. Repeat offenses can bring up to two years in prison. Additional civil fines may be imposed at the discretion of immigration judges, but civil fines do not negate the criminal sanctions or nature of the offense.

thuja, we should punish the employers for hiring illegal aliens. That’s the steak/meat that attracts the wasps. No fence, of any kind, will stop them from coming here, so long as that steak attracts them. The leftie/rightie politicians are all in this together, for same and different reasons.
These arshats in Washington, especially the ones on the right have had many years to wake up, and didn’t. Now they want money and votes. I wrote to Schwarzeneggers’ solicitors a few weeks ago, when they peddled for dough “go to h**l, and I helped you to get in, and to stay in”. All the righties have going for them is that they’re not the charlatans on the left. As a country we’re scr***d.

Squid Shark on May 15, 2008 at 12:03 AM

Large fine?(That would mean they are pleading guilty to the crime, the fine would be the legal restitution)

If the gvmt would imprison employers like the ones at the Agribusiness plant in Iowa who knowingly hired illegals, there wouldn’t be such demand for their services. The employers are actually US citizens, usually, and should certainly do time for breaking our laws so they can help create a festering underclass.
