Bad news: Polar bears “threatened”

Your quote of the day comes from Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne, who notes with great nuance that “this listing will not stop global climate change or prevent any sea ice from melting.” It also won’t stop China from continuing to belch out greenhouse gases at such an amazing rate that in two years it’ll have singlehandedly wiped out all of the reductions from the left’s beloved Kyoto. What it will do in theory is give greens the right to use the Endangered Species Act to challenge economic development all over the country, on grounds that carbon emissions anywhere are a threat to polar bears everywhere. Remember, NASA’s not even sure yet that it’s global warming that’s causing the ice caps to melt; in fact, it’s Canada that’s best positioned to address the needs of the bears since they host two-thirds of the global population. Are the Canadians freaked out about the bears’ endangerment? No: They haven’t even listed the species as threatened, and according to this fact site about polar bears, Canadian hunters actually believe the population’s increasing. Some biologists think that’s untrue, that the bears are simply moving inland as the ice melts. Other biologists disagree, claiming that there are more bears today than there were 35 years ago.
Ah well. It’s an election year and “change” is in the air, my friends. Exit question: The Goracle warned us, didn’t he?

arent there more polar bears today than there were in 1970?

Polar bear cubs are so cute! I will immediately turn off my A/C.
OneGyT on May 14, 2008 at 4:19 PM
Despite near record numbers, the polar bears are listed because one computer model suggests that temperatures are going to rise, and another computer model suggests that lack of ice will harm the bears.
We don’t need no stinkin data, we got computer models.
MarkTheGreat on May 14, 2008 at 4:19 PM
And still another computer model indicates that Gore is full of poop.
BobK on May 14, 2008 at 4:23 PM
Maybe they need to put the computer model version of the polar bears on the “threatened” list until the actual polar bears are threatened.
wise_man on May 14, 2008 at 4:24 PM
Let’s see, Darwin says that creatures evolve/adapt to survive. …and that only the fittest will survive in the long term.
Now a 2 degree increase in temperatures is going to wipe-out the cuddly Polar Bears???…..and virtually all other good animals on the planet…
WWDD? What would Darwin do?
Dpet on May 14, 2008 at 4:24 PM
So, go ahead and add another 5% to a barrel, and say goodbye to ever drilling in ANWR, which was the purpose of this exercise all along.

Polar bears threatened? Someone holding a gun to their heads? Yeah, that would endanger them, all right.
NeighborhoodCatLady on May 14, 2008 at 4:25 PM
Even though, polar bears have survived several other global warming events over the millenia. And these enviro-greenies believe in evolution don’t they? They might be denying the next great race if they don’t allow the bears to adapt to the changes! Abort, Abort!
kirkill on May 14, 2008 at 4:27 PM
That’s some scary stuff. These radical groups have been trying for years to reduce our freedoms and liberties. Why not just hand them over on a silver platter?
None of this has anything to do with the environment or polar bears. It’s all about subjugation and control. It’s imperative we put conservatives on the Supreme Court.

After that I’m going to saw down some trees just for the hell of it. I want to be as anti-green as humanly possible. And remember PETA really stands for “People eating tasty animals”.

Witness the death of democracy and the death of a nation – tree huggers now hold sway over excessive farts throughout the country. Forget about canceling NAFTA, we will not be allowed to build plants. Forget about new power plants. Forget about doing anything but out sourcing everything to India or China where this foolishness is dealt with as foolishness.
You could even make the case that we can’t defend ourselves if invaded, the smoke from out bound missles might harm the atmosphere.
What freaking idiocy.

Move the bears to Antarctica. Plenty of food (non-endangered penguins), and the ice sheet is growing. Next.

This cracks me up more then anything.
FYI… Polar Bears that are dieing in Alaska are dieing due to not burying the HUGE amounts of trash on the North Slope.
Yep that is right, the enviro-wacko’s won’t let people in the villages “bury” the trash, so you have now stabalized Polar bear populations at these unearthed trash dumps (think Yellow Stone National Park) and won’t be moved until the thaw. So that means that the Trash which is only taken out of the top of Alaska is only moved once every year or so. The Polar Bears aren’t dumb and they will eat anything edible. The Dept of the Interior knows this as well as the Bureau of lan management… yet, what do you do when you have greenies running the Land Government!
Oh well… Stupid people run amok. Wish they would stay out of my dang State!

saltydogg14 on May 14, 2008 at 4:33 PM
Yes, last I heard the estimates were 5 times as many (5,000 then, 25,000 today!). Luckily, the American people are too lazy/stupid to do anything but accept what the liberal press tells them is the truth.
I think this is actually a huge story, and possibly the nail in our coffin. Say good-bye to any chance of getting McCain to push for drilling in a couple of years when “global warming” is finally put out to pasture. Basically – we’re f**ked for a long time in the future, possibly irreparably
RightWinged on May 14, 2008 at 4:33 PM
more than you could possibly imagine.
Onager on May 14, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Wow, by doing this they just put the Lawyers, and Judges, in charge of the entire economy.
Now, any single thing we do will have to have an environmental impact statement about how it will impact Global Warming, because it will impact Polar Bears.
Thats the chain of law that will be in effect…
Romeo13 on May 14, 2008 at 4:36 PM
Maybe. But here is the senerio as well. Gov Palin said no, do not put the Polar Bears on the list. I.E. the Federal Government only has jurisdiction in their areas concerning it, not all of Alaska. She isn’t stupid, and knows about the trash dumps. Anyone who has been to Barrow, Kotzebue, Pt Hope or any other “village” knows there what the deals is. Even the natives are starting to say there is no GB up here… as well as Canada. So what happens when the Canadians decide their are to many Polar bears in their Northern Territories or Yukon states and hunt them? Americans are going to freak out? Alaskan’s will ask to help! That is going to be interesting.
upinak on May 14, 2008 at 4:37 PM
Since the discrediting of communism, the anti-capitalist Left has settled on the environment as the tool to advance their agenda. The listing of polar bears as an endangered species was a masterstroke in their crusade to cripple the U.S. economy. Now any federal act that might theoretically contribute to global warming (and hence, the supposed destruction of the polar bear habitat) will be subject to federal court oversight. Since just about every productive process generates carbon dioxide, there will be almost no manufacturing activity that isn’t subject to challenge by environmentalists on grounds that it will negatively impact the polar bears.
The potential ramifications are huge, but I’m sure the environmental Lefties will enjoy a pastoral existence, living in huts and collecting nuts and berries. It’s what they’ve been working for. The rest of us, not so much.
Cicero43 on May 14, 2008 at 4:39 PM
Threatened is not endangered. Big difference. yet you are probably correct.. no one thinks there is one, including a greenie.
upinak on May 14, 2008 at 4:41 PM
I think the thing to do would be to encourage certain environmentalist to travel north to the land of the polar bear, let us say Churchhill, Manitoba. On the coast of Hudsons Bay. I would leave these greens outside overnight at the city dump. There the survivors could write a thesis on the viability of polar bears being endangered.

Ever since I saw a video of a polar bear killing a walrus on youtube I’ve hated the dirty beasts with a burning passion. On top of that they’re some of the meanest bears around, and wouldn’t mind eating any of you if it tickled their fancy. Kill every single one of them.
Darth Executor on May 14, 2008 at 4:54 PM
A species should be listed as “threatened” or “endangered” or not listed based on only one thing: the best science available. Political concerns should mean as little to the determination of the polar bears’ official status as it means to the polar bears themselves.
radjah shelduck on May 14, 2008 at 4:56 PM
You think that is bad. You should see them when a whale is being butchered by the Inuit people. Whoa talk about some close calls. They have elephant gun rifles just in case the polar bears don’t want to wait for the scraps. It is very impressive!

ultracon on May 14, 2008 at 5:05 PM
It seems the one given in the whole global warming debate is that models (like polls) are just educated guesses trying to predict the future. They are never accurate when it comes to weather, temperature, rainfall, hurricanes, storms etc. Aside from obvious opportunities for intentional abuse, there are so many factors involved that scientists have no clue as to what is really happening. They are always adjusting and ‘changing’ the models. Remember when we faced global cooling and ice ages? Now that ‘climate change’ has become the new phrase of choice to cover all the bases who can really take these people seriously? I mean climate changes every year. Generally colder in winter then hotter in summer and changing back and forth all the time. Yet we all survive (thanks to air conditioning and central heating).
Besides, everyone wants to live in warmer climates so global warming would be a good thing, right?
jerseyman on May 14, 2008 at 5:07 PM
OMG, are you kidding?! Ed, put it on the blog. It was the Dept of the Interior who came up with this. Bush had nothing to do with putting them on the “list”. And when it comes to BLM or DOI, they do not have to tell the President.

LegendHasIt on May 14, 2008 at 5:11 PM
“Saving the planet” isn’t the agenda anyway. Reducing the economic strength and political autonomy of successful nations, especially the United States, is the goal.
The actors and politicians that preach endlessly about this haven’t changed their lifestyles one iota. The groups advocating for policies that will bankrupt America refuse to even discuss proven alternative energy sources like nuclear.
They aren’t serious about the science, but they are dead set on the endgame politically.

The fact that so-called adult Americans are forced to discuss the number of polar bears in the Arctic in order to plan our critical nationsl energy policy is pathetic.
If you all don’t think that in about 5-10 years, when our national oil production has sunk another 25-50% and there’s no way out, our economy is in tatters and widespread radical gasoline rationing has begun, that people won’t be reaching for their guns, you’re insane.

humans are the cause of co2.
co2 is the reason the planet is warming.
the planet will warm and the polar bears will die.
so i ask this…
the planet has been cooling for 9-10 years now.
co2 has increased 5% in that same time period. how is this possible ?
if the science models are correct in the doomsday predictions, why didnt they scry out this cooling period some time ago ? i mean, a 10 year trend is a pretty big trend in their scheme of things.

I suppose I could just wring my hands about this and decry the effect that idiot liberals, half-witted environmentalists, and leftists have on common sense and intelligent thought. Instead, rather than just voice opposition, I personally plan to engage in any form of disobedience I can find. I also fully expect to seek out opportunities to subtly sabotage this or any other green program or agenda where I discover an opportunity. I suggest and encourage business persons to plan business expansion outside of the U.S. in countries where this idiocy can be avoided. In fact, I would encourage business operators to consider moving entire operations to friendlier venues and close as many U.S operations as they can justify. (Labor costs will probably decrease as well.) Resistance, and both passive and active opposition is the only way to sensibly react to this ignorance and politically correct stupidity. I encourage anyone else who is dismayed to join me to combat this in whatever manner they feel they can justify. Who knows what the ultimate impact of such activity might be? And, if nothing else, it will feel so damn good!

Fun Facts on the Global Warming Fraud: THE ALARMISTS
Just who, besides Al Gore, are the people behind the force driving the current “global warming crisis”?
Maurice Strong, a pioneer of the New Age movement, helped to ignite today’s Green movement. A senior adviser to Kofi Annan, he was responsible for setting up the Kyoto Protocol. He has stated that the only way to “save” the world is for industrial civilization to collapse, to deliberately seek poverty, and to set levels of “mortality control”.
Richard Benedict, special adviser to Kofi Annan, stated, “A global warming treaty must be implemented even if there is no evidence of global warming.
Timothy Wirth, former undersecretary of state in the Clinton administration, stated, “We have to ride the theory of global warming even if it is wrong”.
Dr. James Hansen, Al Gore’s adviser, is known as the father of “global warming”. He has admitted that he was willing to exaggerate science in order to get public attention. Though an astronomer and a chemist, Hansen is not a climatologist.
Liv Arneses, a disciple of Al Gore, attempted to pull a sled to the North Pole in an effort to prove that the ice was melting. In March 2007 she left Ward Hunt Island in Canada for her 530-mile journey. Three days later she quit because her toes froze due to the extreme cold.
Barbara Boxer (Senator-D-CA) on May 9, 2007 proposed a “global warming reduction bill” (S309) that, if enacted, will cost a family of four $4,500. Senators Clinton, Obama, Dodd, Biden, Feingold, Kennedy, Inouye, Lautenberg, Leahy, Menedez and Milulski were among the 15 democratic senators who signed the bill.
Prof. Paul Ehrlich’s work has been praised by Al Gore as the “prescription” for our global woes. Among the professor’s works is the promotion of population control and description of human population growth as “cancer”.

Long ago, long since lost, there was a pulp sci-fi novel about Earth being frozen over. A space colony had been established, though, and to keep atmosphere in the space station, they flew missions down into the atmosphere to scoop air and liquify it, then head back to the station.
The plot line was of a downed mission pilot and his adventures. The reason the earth was frozen wasteland was exactly what we are doing now to prevent “global warming” except the ideologues REALLY succeeded so when the sun went into remission, if you will, New Ice Age.
I swear I am not making this up. Read the book as a teenager at boarding school. Yah, it was 40 years ago and my memory is not what it was…

The Clinton’s have the reputation as the biggest crooks and Con-men from that administration, But dumb old AlGore has successfully pulled off the biggest con game in the history of the world. His scam has increased his bank accounts in any one given year since 2000 the same amount that it has taken the clinton’s 8 years to put in the bank.
LegendHasIt on May 14, 2008 at 6:56 PM
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is essential for life on the planet, that is an undeniable fact. Deliberately taking CO2 out of the atmosphere would be a crime against humanity because we live in a hungry world and less CO2 means less food production.
The greedy socialist mindset behind the global warming fraud would tax you on the oxygen you breath if they could, but they can’t because that’s too blatant. So they have settled for the second best option which is to tax you for the CO2 that you exhale.
