Open thread: Hillary death rattle in West Virginia; Update: 20% say race is factor? Update: Hillary wins West Virginia

posted at 6:11 pm on May 13, 2008 by Allahpundit

Exit polls are trickling in so we might as well open a thread. Victory is a foregone conclusion; what we’re looking for tonight is data damaging to the Messiah. How’s this?

Early CBS News exit polling shows that just 23 percent of Clinton voters in the West Virginia primary say they would be satisfied if Obama becomes the Democratic nominee. Three in four Clinton supporters would be dissatisfied with Obama carrying the Democratic banner-the highest number in the primaries to date…

Looking ahead to the general election, 36 percent of Clinton voters in West Virginia say they would vote for Obama if he becomes the nominee, while 35 percent plan to vote for McCain and 24 percent say they won’t vote at all.

20 percent said Obama shares Jeremiah Wright’s views “a lot.” We’re not going to liveblog the results, obviously, as the race will be called as soon as the polls close, but while we wait for the demographic data here’s Mary K’s latest post asking when and how Her Majesty’s finally going to bow out of this debacle. I was saying to a friend earlier this afternoon that there’s a genuine opportunity for Hillary here if she plays her cards right: Much to my surprise, our commenters agreed with me on Friday that we’ll be sad to see her finally go, indicating that she’s earned a considerable amount of goodwill on the right over the past month or so thanks to her perseverance, flashes of hawkishness, and softer touches. If Obama loses and she spends the next four years cultivating that centrist appeal, she could be very formidable in 2012. The left will hate her, but the left already hates her, probably irretrievably. The only Clintonian thing left to do is plant one foot in liberalism, one in conservatism, and bridge that divide all the way to the White House. Exit question: Hillary Clinton, healer?

Here’s Laura Ingraham from today’s show, anticipating Jim Geraghty in preemptively rebutting the media’s anti-Hillary spin of tonight’s results. Strange days, my friends.

Update: Tomorrow’s lede today.

Racially motivated voting appeared to be running higher than usual: Two in 10 whites said the race of the candidate was a factor in their vote, second only to Mississippi. And only a third of those voters said they’d support Obama as the nominee against John McCain, fewer than in other primaries where the question has been asked.

Update: It’s 7:30, the polls have closed, and the nets have called it for Hillary. Stand by for the full exits.

Update: And here they are. Per the gender split, she’s looking at about a 30-point win. Unusually, she won all education groups, including post-grads; was the pick of more voters as being the only candidate who was honest and trustworthy (35/19); won independents 54/42; won white Democrats by 46 points; and won among the 20% of voters who said race was important to them, 81/16. The media will go hog wild with the racial numbers to spin this as a tainted victory for Her Majesty, but even if you exclude that vote entirely she still wins by a margin well into the teens.

With her expected blowout victory in WV tonight, there’s one glaring omission in all of the DBM.
They fail to mention that WV is klan country and home of Robert KKK Byrd.
Why else would B Hussein Obama be doing so poorly?
Byrd and Rockefeller are the 2 whitest guys in the senate.

Of course, 90%+ of blacks voting for Obama is not racially motivated, because it is logically impossible for blacks to be the most racist race on the planet. It’s some twisted version of “The Emperor’s New Clothes”.

The only Clintonian thing left to do is plant one foot in liberalism, one in conservatism, and bridge that divide all the way to the White House.

Yes, but the image of her in that position for 3-4 years is a killer.

If someone told me a year ago that Republicans and conservatives would be even moderately complimentary towards Clinton while she was still in the race, I’d have bound them in duct tape, and carried ‘em to the nearest mental institution. For their own good.

The one thing most people appreciate is a “fighter”. And Hillary has shown she is a fighter, about her only redeeming quality.
Any respect shown for her, is she went down swinging.
Now we have to listen to her whining voice about how good Obama will be for the country, and how they have always been racing towards the same goal.

Prediction: She wins this thing by 40+ points. Only bigger primary victory by either candidate will be DC, which went 75-24 Obama (+51.)

Vizzini on May 13, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Well yes the Media will say that. But increasingly they are an echo chamber, tuned out by most Americans. Newspaper circulation and readership declines year after year, same with newscasts. Other than disaster coverage, most people get their news from the internet.

What did anyone expect? Wright, Obama’s defense then weak criticism of Wright, years of race-baiting by Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan, have made non-professional whites have zilch slack for racial appeals. Obama is the candidate of Blacks (90%), College kids (who don’t hang around their Black peers according to WSJ articles and have zilch interaction with them), and yuppie professionals.

Obama is Dukakis plus Sharpton. So, no big surprises. McCain’s election to lose (though I’m sure Mav will do his best to lose it).

Rumor has it that Obama is scheduled to come on the O’Reilly factor in the near future. As the circumcision specialist once said “The skin stops here”. I suggest they unveil the new “Don’t be a Dickhead” lapel pin in red white and blue. Proceeds could be donated to your favorite thinly disguised terrorist fundraiser.

alycan1 on May 13, 2008 at 7:35 PM

I was watching Brit Hume this evening and was surprised at what Juan Williams said. He was really down on Obama. He said that the tact the Obama people were taking was that if anyone asks any questions about anything from Michelle to Wright to Ayers to terrorism they were a racist pig.

I was surprised at his obvious resentment of Obama. I think some members of the press are beginning to get a little bit disgusted with the obvious fawning of other members of the press where Obama is concerned. And I think that is why some Republicans have come to feel almost sorry for Hillary.

Harpoon on May 13, 2008 at 8:24 PM

If 20% of the people said they will not vote for Obama due to race, isn’t a portion of that due to Obama’s inablity to transcend race?

Also, Obama has been playing the race card all along so people should not be too surprised to see that come back to bite him.

Mojave Mark on May 13, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Hillary’s win keeps her viable only as far as giving her more time to give Obama a chance to pull such a major gaffe that it causes the superdelegates to change course. It would have to be something as damaging as a video of Barak in church listening to one of Rev. Wright’s most inflammatory speeches, followed by a flurry of weak alibis that send his numbers plummeting among the independent voters to the point that the supers think the down-ballot damage in November would be worse than the long-term damage of taking the nomination away from Obama.

As for Juan, he may either be just a rock-solid Hillary supporter, or he may see that many of the people he decried in his book as hurting Africian-Americans by trying to externalize all of their communities’ problems on outside forces are among Obama’s most solid supporters. Williams said (as Bill Cosby has) that the black community needs to stop blaming other people for their problems, and start working towards improving their education and training for a better life in American society. That’s certainly not what Jeremiah Wright has been preaching to Barak and Michelle for the past 20 years or what some of Obama’s farthest left supporters believe, and Juan may believe that an Obama Administration would just aggravate that problem with needless finger-pointing.

Right on Whiskey! Mav just gave a speech on Climate Change; can’t believe what this idiot had to say! I’m embarrassed that this fool is representing the Republican party. The Mav actually stated that “man made” climate change is a fact that can not be denied. Nobody has come forward with this factual evidence; on the contrary, the evidence does not lead us down that road. In fact, listening to the Mav give this speech was really no different than listening to Hillary Clinton or Al Gore give a speech on this junk science bullshit. We are going to get hammered with this crap folks; doesn’t matter who’s elected.

As usual, we will have many more regulations forced upon our businesses; prices for our goods will soar; corporations will continue to relocate off American soil; the consumer will ultimately pay the price; big brother will have more control over every one of us… Damn, this election sucks!

When John McCain was beaten in 2000, he went back to the Senate and punished Republicans for the next 8 years by working with the dems and sticking his thumb in the eyes of Conservatives every chance he got.
