Heart-ache: High-school student banned from prom for skimpy dress

The boss, being a good mom, is outrageously outraged by the choice of attire. Granted, it’s tacky, but certainly no more revealing than a bikini. Dare I say it, but if America’s daughters aren’t allowed to dress like prostitutes then the terrorists have already won. Exit question: What large percentage of the overwhelmingly male, anti-Islamist HA readership is with me?

Hey MC. I will take issue with you here. Our reaction need be based without regard to other world views. Our freedoms, and the preservation of them, are not fixed on the opposite of something else. If terrorists eat with a fork with their right hand, should we switch to our left? Not at all, all we need to do is stick to our position. If you going into a shop where the sign says - No shirt, no shoes, no service - have the terrorists won? Of course not.
Anyway, I’m not really trying to advocate either way, merely commenting that it is fitting for communities to make rules, dress codes included. It’s no abrogation of the intent of the founding fathers. That’s the point I’m getting at in response to what was said above.
Spirit of 1776 on May 13, 2008 at 6:38 PM
Wow. You’re really clever… and so hip with the times.
Note: The alternate link I posted is NOT a stupid Rick-Roll.

Calling someone a prude because they think a skimpy dress, on a badly tattooed child is your answer?
You see Baphomet, it is called discernment, look it up and study the word.
It is being a respectful citizen. There are dress codes, and kudos for principal Todd for making those rules stick. School is where you should learn some discipline. Of course, you don’t believe in that…if it feels good do it. BTW, dressing like that is disruptive, disrespectful of authority, immature, narcissistic, and a sign of being uneducated (the other sign is she has a difficult time putting a sentence together).
If it feels good do it, is okay by you. So you think a high school child can take drugs if it doesn’t harm others? Drive without a license if they don’t get in an accident? Drink at a party, get drunk as long as they don’t harm others. Have sex with whomever as long as they aren’t harmed?
You see where your flippant, “if it feels good do it” takes you, that was the mantra of the 60’s, that is the foundation of the liberal party now.

CNN and the rest of the media will get spun up by showing yet another video of a sexualized high school girl. High school girls watch the videos and read the magazines and dress even more like strippers.
I think Allah’s point is humorous.

Unrelated to anything, but practicality. Switch to fork in left hand, knife in right, or vice-versa if you’re left-handed, or whichever if your ambidextrous :)

Spirit of 1776 on May 13, 2008 at 6:44 PM
Doesn’t make it wrong, though.
Here’s the thing: for the setting, the dress was over the line. Had this been a dance club or some other ADULT venue, I’d be the first to stand up and whistle. However, this was a HIGH SCHOOL FUNCTION! As such, the school has every right to ask her to leave if they thought what she wore (or did, or said, or blinked for that matter) was inappropriate. So from a purely LEGAL standpoint, the school was in the right and the girl, not so much.
From a cultural standpoint, I don’t personally think it is appropriate for a girl that young to be dressing in such a revealing fashion. My daughters will not, at least not while they live under my roof. If HER folks thought that the dress was okay, well, that’s their issue. The school has to act on the premise of the most good for the most kids, and having one of the students dressed in a way that could quite possibly cause fights is not that.
Also, I have to take exception to the notion that the prom is an adult function. It is about as adult as dressing up in your parent’s clothes in front of the mirror: you may look the part, but underneath you’re still a kid. And if you don’t think American High School students are anything BUT children, well, go spend some time in one. It’s actually quite sad.

Here let me help you read:
Got it? School teaches SOME discipline.
Let me give you a couple of examples seeing as you are so dense as to not understand the obvious.
You have to show up to school on time
You have to move from class to class on time
You normally sit in the same chair each day
You do your homework
You don’t disrupt the class
You take notes
You learn to ask questions in an orderly manner
You read a book from the front page to the back page
..and in your case it would have taught you to read and understand the content of what you are reading.
Get it now? each of these is a discipline…
sheeesh…
right2bright on May 13, 2008 at 6:51 PM
In one of the clips from the video, they briefly show a paper that the school gave to the students that was the dress code for the prom.
These were the rules:
1. Only one inch of the mid section can be shown
2. Bare backs are acceptable
3. Slits in the dresses can be no more than 3 inches above the knee
4. See through fabrics should not be in areas that reveal private body parts
5. Proper undergarments must be worn
6. Tennis shoes of any kind are unacceptable
It also contained a reminder that the event was a black tie affair, a note that failure to adhere to the guidelines could result in you and your date not being admitted to prom and a form for you to sign saying that you had read and agreed to the above guidelines.
The fact is that there was a rule in place that she chose to ignore and she suffered the pre-stated consequences for it.
Now, whether or not the dress was ’slutty’ or whether or not the school has the right to impose a dress code are other issues.
If their prom was anything like mine, they signed those dress code forms when they bought their tickets. If she’s adult enough to work that body at an ‘adult setting’ like prom, she’s adult enough to honor contracts that she affixes her signature to.

If we kill terrorists, then should we kill ourselves too?
Um, no. Because we’re not terrorists.
If you want to spit in the face of terrorists then do that - by spitting in their faces - preferably after killing them and taking a huge bite out of a pork rib.
But turning kids into prostitutes to (somehow) spite Osama bin Ladin? Yeah, I just don’t see where AllaP’s thought process is going there.

And what is at all wrong with that? It’s called “society.”
No one is saying that she doesn’t have a right to dress like a whore. No one here is trying to take away her liberty. No one here is threating to stone her or lock her up. They are just expressing societal norms.
It’s legal for her to dress that way, just like it’s legal for her to have five kids by the time she’s 18 or for me to walk through the city park in a speedo or for someone to curse in front of my kids or my wife. But some people here feel that that type of behavior should be discouraged. That that kind of behavior is inappropriate or even in some way harmful.
The way that society maintains its norms is through “raising a scandal” when someone breaks them. That is what people are doing here.
29Victor on May 13, 2008 at 6:59 PM

malan89 on May 13, 2008 at 7:02 PM
You are right. I misread. I didn’t register the modifier.
Though, as to your examples, I’ve not seen these generally exercised so I’m still in doubt of their being taught at all. Exercised (and thereby strengthened) by those with discipline, yes. Taught, well…I’m in doubt of that.
Spirit of 1776 on May 13, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Yeah, if she signed a contract that she would honor the dress code…then the school had every right to ban her.
malan89 on May 13, 2008 at 7:03 PM
She perfectly within her rights to wear her dress in a public place and parade it on national TV as well. Similarly, the sponsors of a private event at a hotel are free to exclude anyone they want from that event. If the dress code was known ahead of time, then no refund is due. If there was no dress code, then it becomes a more difficult question whether a refund is due.

Not taught per se, but they exist as a preamble to the real world.
I had one child graduate from a state high school, and another from a private high school. One was agnostic so they went to the state school, the other followed our Christian beliefs and went to a parochial high school.
Both are successful business attorneys for very major law firms.
Both learned discipline in school as well as home and at work. And to get a law degree and pass the bar exam in three states (both of them California, and two other states) takes a lot of discipline from all three sources.
We hand chose the state school, and it matched the parochial school for education. There are good state schools, but tough to find.

I have no desire to contradict you. I did misread you earlier, and so was in error as to your meaning. Consequently it would be unpardonable to attempt to carry my point now. :) I’ll just say congratulations to you for the confluence of forces that gave your children that discipline. That must, undoubtedly, give you tremendous satisfaction as a parent.

Assuming that’s true, the result is still that conservative Christian women enjoy the sex that they have more.
JadeNYU on May 13, 2008 at 7:54 PM
Sorry Allahpundit, but that sentiment is way off the mark. We do not have to allowing our daughters - or sons - to be clad like streetwalkers in order to have reasonable freedom of dress. That’s somewhat akin to allowing the KKK to parade down Main Street so you can boast you have truly free speech.

Actually that was from a book;”Who Really Cares” by Arthur C. Brooks (Syracuse university).
It shows that conservative, republicans have a more active and satisfying sex life then liberals, democrats.
That is a minor part of the book, it delves into giving, blood donation, basically who really cares for others.
The author was quite surprised by the findings and spent a considerable time checking his facts and figures.

So…you should sample as many people as possible to make sure exactly where your sex-partner-of-the-moment (cough) is on the scale of awesomeness, and also to make sure you’re not missing anything even more fantastic, did I get that right?
hahahahahahahaha *ahem* sorry.
OK let’s review:
Baffling, i’n't it? I wonder why? Lessee:
–no being compared with multiple others
–no comparing to others or bad flashbacks or memories of being dumped after making yourself so vulnerable
–no chance of disease assuming both disease free upon marriage
–secure, committed sex with someone pledged to you for life
You’re right. That sounds like a recipe for misery to me. *rolls eyes*

Kudos to Michelle Malkin for “hanging in there” and trying to encourage people to save the children that attend public schools — both from themselves and from their parents (and from bloggers like MoonGodPundit, too). As usual, she is right, and he is wrong.
If we follow along the path subscribed by our porn-saturated host, it won’t be long before ritual human sacrifice of young virgins will be practiced at the high school proms. Of course, by that time, they’ll have to sacrifice beta-male CINO bloggers, since they will be the only virgins left.
As for me and mine, I’d never send my daughters to public school anyhow. It’ll be private or home schooling for them.

The prom is a school event and the administrators of that school deemed it necessary to prohibit a student from the event, based upon the judgment granted to them by the state. If she wants to dress like common street trash then no one is stopping her. She merely has to do it elsewhere.
And by the way, where is this girl’s father? Either her father is as irresponsible and morally bankrupt as she or he is not present in her life. Both cases are pathetic.

So glad I’m not alone here. I have said this before AP, I can always tell your posts, they have a flair of the adolescent to them. How do you know the majority are male, though I thought so with many agreeing with some teenage remarks like how hot MKH is, which always cracks me up and makes this blog look so bad.
If you can’t see that the principal was right by enforcing the rules, you have major problems. How you got to be head blogger is odd to me too. I would like to come here to discuss things intelligently, but you manage to bring it down to a lower level of intelligence.
Saying that this girl wasn’t allowed to wear this dress is saying the terrorists won? Are you for real? Michelle is so intelligent, I often wonder if she looks at what you write.
I still think you are young and adolescent and turn HA, which could be good, into a teenage discussion, leaving conservativsm out but bringing in stupid exit questions, like was so and so hot with her glasses?

The thing to remember is that the founding fathers (and their forebearers as the head of the colonies) set up a society that was founded upon the bedrock of the Word of God.
Liberty + God = Freedom.
Liberty - God = Anarchy.
People need a good moral foundation. Nobody would have worn that outfit in the colonies out of a sense of modesty. It’s one of the virtues which has been lost in our culture which glamorizes the loss of innocence.
Yes, our children will someday lose their innocence. Yes, we cannot prevent it. However, we do not need to promote it, hasten it or, worst of all, glamorize it. The glamorization of the loss of innocence is the most blatant sign that America has moved way too far from it’s foundational (i.e. embedded in God) Christian roots.
That is why we have people marketing stripper kits for pre-pubescent girls for Halloween.
Yes, adults can do what they want in the privacy of their own home. Yes, they can do such things in other private settings (such as a nightclub, if that is the style of the nightclub), but people in High School shouldn’t be wearing such outfits at a High School function.
Theophile on May 14, 2008 at 12:22 AM
