The “typical” mistake is saying “52″ (Alaska and Hawaii). Never heard anyone say “57″, except maybe the haughty Mr. John Theresa Heinz Kerry.
So what was Barry thinking of?

Probably something along the lines of thinking “fifty”, and then realizing he had a few that hadn’t been visited… there was a big pause between the “fifty” and the “seven”, as if he were trying to correct fifty to forty seven, plus one to go and he wanted to go to Alaska and Hawaii, but was shot down.

Something along the lines of: (unspoken thoughts in parentheses) “We’ve visited fifty… (no, wait, I have to subtract the few didn’t get to, so that’s forty plus…) seven, one to go, and we wanted to go to Alaska and Hawaii”, etc.

Should have been forty seven plus one plus two (which equals fifty), but instead of first saying forty his mouth got ahead of his mental math and he said fifty, and didn’t correct the first part of the sentence while doing the mental subtraction.

So if you’re going to “hold him to account” for getting the number wrong, you should be saying that he thought there were sixty states: fifty seven visited so far, one to go, and couldn’t get to Alaska and Hawaii. Sixty total.

Blah. There are a billion better reasons to ding the guy than not catching and instantly correcting something like this. It’s a petty bit of harping that would actually qualify for his overused “this is simply a distraction” excuse.

He’d be a nightmare if elected, but not because he might make trivial misstatements like this.

Numbers are irrelevant to Democrats, it’s all about how they feel.

This obviously raises questions about Dodd’s advanced age and his ability to execute the duties of his office. I think Dodd should immediately resign from the Senate for the good of Delaware, or Rhode Island, or whatever the hell state he represents.
