Disaster: Democrat beats Republican in Mississippi special election; Update: Panic time, say Boehner, Cole

posted at 10:29 pm on May 13, 2008 by Allahpundit

And so the only election that mattered tonight, the bellwether of this fall’s congressional races, goes the wrong way. I’m going to go find some glue to huff. Talk amongst yourselves.

Update: It may not end up being all that close, either.

Update: Boehner and NRCC Chairman Tom Cole warn congressional Republicans that a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

The Republican’s name was Greg Davis, which I think was the name of a very liberal Governor out in California not so long ago. I know that’s superficial but I bet it didn’t help and he’s kind of a strange looking guy to boot.

You get the government you deserve. If the electorate votes for Obama and the Dems in November, they deserve the end result: A government that makes the Carter years look appealing.

amerpundit on May 13, 2008 at 10:45 PM

The Calofornia Gov. was Gray Davis.

Typhonsentra on May 13, 2008 at 10:46 PM

I don’t know what difference it would’ve made, but having the election at the same time as the primary- which only matters to Dems at this point- had to hurt the Republican candidate’s chances quite a bit. Dems had an additional reason to show up at the voting booth; Republicans didn’t.

Hollowpoint on May 13, 2008 at 10:46 PM

My four year plan:

1) Don`t advance in pay beyond $75,000 a year.

2) Put more money towards my 401k to make up for lost revenue due to higher tax rate on larger investors.

3) Walk to work every other day to ease pain from $10.00 gas Pres. Obama`s energy policy will bring.

4) Dig a bomb shelter, walk in zig-zag pattern and duck while walking to avoid death or injury from terror attack a weaker foreign policy will invite.

5) Learn to eat bark and rabbits.

6) Get up the nerve to start drinking.

I, for one, welcome my new Democrat overlords. Time to buy a house I can’t afford, quit my job, and commit whatever crimes I might feel like.

Democrats in control means never having to say you’re sorry, only that you’re a victim.

Let me call it now: We lose 40 House seats and 6 Senate seats in November.

Three of these is a trend. Can’t be explained away except at the margins.

The Congressional Republicans were probably the most ideologically corrupt Congress in the modern era. Corrupt as in saying and promising one thing, doing the complete opposite.

Here’s a little advice for the leadership in the House and Senate.
Your number one issue should be the price of gas, how it effects the price of food and the overall economy.

Send your people out to drive this message home relentlessly.

It is an issue that effects everyone, except for out of touch politicians with a government paid gas card.

Why weren’t you on every channel discussing Senate rejects GOP oil drilling plan and placing the blame squarely where it is deserved?

Democrats Vote to Keep Gas Prices High should have been your message of the day, week and year.

therightwinger on May 13, 2008 at 11:28 PM

Great… look at the Washington Post’ comments. Not only are we going to have to endure the Dems talking about OBamessiah’s coming but they’re going to completely rewrite the last 8 years as a giant mistake where the evil GOP tried to take over the country but was saved only by the efforts of hard working Democrats.

They’ll even forget about Clinton’s shenanigans the last few months and restore Clinton to his blackness.

amerpundit on May 13, 2008 at 11:31 PM

So I have to wonder, how’s that whole Republican Party is really Democrat lite working out? Good news though, the Republicans got three election cycles out of the War on Terror alone. 2002, 2004, and 2006.

That was the only damn thing they had in those three elections, and they’ve forgotten that most of us who support that war, are also conservative on other issues. Like fiscal responsibility. Most of us don’t buy this Global Warming nonsense. Instead of being conservative, they became Country Club Blue Bloods.

When the Republicans return to their successful pattern. Think Contract with America, or Reagan.

Hell, McCain’s already taking public funds because the conservative wallets are closed to him.

You ask me, the Repubs and Dems both have buyers remorse this cycle – but the Dems still have someone in the race they can support.

I’m a district or two over from the Illinois district that had been Repub for decades and is now Dem. Know what? The district demographics changed dramatically over the last decade, the bulk of the voters out there now aren’t going to vote Repub without a decent understanding of what the difference is.

The Grand Old Party needs another Great Communicator. Someone who can figure out how to sound bite his way through “this is why fewer gas blends are a good idea”. Someone who can figure out why “we need to stay in Iraq as long as we stayed in Germany”. Someone … anyone ….

[no pun intended] Knowing how crooked the Dems are, how power thirsty they be, how corrupt they campaign, they may be in power for the rest of my life.

Sad deal. But I can’t make myself vote for MaCain. He actually holds conservatives in contempt. He despises most conservative values. The only good news is he’ll be to old to run again for 2012. If you want another Reagan, you have to take out the Democrat noise machine that sends punkass losers with video cameras around to potential GOP Presidential prospects waiting for them to say “macaca.” This gets infinitely complicated if this model keeps being successful at winning elections.

Until then, your Reagan of Myth is going to stay right where s/he is right now, in a safe GOP seat, not wanting to ruin his or her entire political career going up against a billion-dollar smear machine.

If McCain wins this time, maybe Soros will decide he’s lost enough money. Maybe the Democrats will become a bad investment for the businesspeople who have donated to the Democrat machine in hopes of favors from a Democrat White House. Maybe the publicists and media hacks will be forced to prioritize actual paying customers over Democrats who pay with a song and a promise of access.

That is, assuming you are not part of the board Snooper infiltrated.

Please explain how you can do that, the waterfront villa in Mexico. My understanding is that you can’t own property in Mexico unless you are a citizen of Mexico. You have to have a visa to be there and a visa is only good for 3 months. Also, why are you paying Mexico 10% income taxes and less than 1% property taxes.

I figured it out, you are a Mexican.

cjs1943 on May 13, 2008 at 11:48 PM

if you are not a Mexican national you can own property within 50km of the ocean through a fidecomiso or Mexican bank trust, it’s not a lease you have full ownership rights and be advised that huge financial institutions lije GE Capital and Stewart Title insurance are backing these investments to the tune of $20 billion per year

Any American can get a 6 month visa whenever they enter, renewable FM visas are easily obtained if you buy property or get a job here (you must be sponsored for the latter)

Properties further than 50km from the beach can be bought by foreigners fee simple, just like in the USA

No, I’m not Mexican

Bush gets Obama Bin Laden
McCain steps down (for the good of the party… y’know, what Dole did NOT do) and Romney steps up.
Bush gets the CIA to overthrow Chavez properly, freeing the oil reserves again, price drops… Romney’s in.

Better yet…

McCain steps down (for the good of the party… y’know, what Dole did NOT do) and someone else steps up.

New guy gets more refineries built.
New guy gets more nuclear power plants to be built.
New guy gets driling in ANWR going (will take a few years).

PS

If you get sponsored for a job here, the income tax is a flat 10%, property taxes for foreigners and nationals is less than 1%
