A nice catch even by the ‘Busters’ usual high standards, but I must take issue with the aspersion cast upon my special, special lady. They’re accusing her of pandering to the crowd by lapsing once again into a regional dialect. Au contraire. This isn’t her southern “sumpin’,” this is her all-purpose untraceable one-of-the-common-folk “sumpin’,” I believe, a vibe most recently channeled in her chummy “just two kids from the suburbs, yakkin’ about politics” interview with O’Reilly. There’s nary a whiff of cornpone in anything else she says, although perhaps I’m just not hearing it anymore because, after all, I wuv her.
Exit question: Is “sumpin’” the correct spelling here? Isn’t it closer to “some-t’in”? “Some’in”? There’s a “t” in there somewhere, I’m pretty sure. We should figure this out now, before tomorrow night’s victory speech.

My favorite….backards.
Limerick on May 12, 2008 at 8:36 PM
I’ve always spelled it the way I say it: “SUMTHIN”. Although, really, it’s a stretch to suggest sumthin’s up here? God, am I defending Shrillary…again?
I hope she wins by 45% or more! I want to see the media call White people racist and watch Kentucky backlash even more. Please let it happen!!!
SouthernGent on May 12, 2008 at 8:37 PM
I’m hearing “sump’m”.
flip on May 12, 2008 at 8:38 PM
Sumpt’n maybe (you all know I can’t spell spell), but here in Texas it has a ‘p’ sound in it.
Limerick on May 12, 2008 at 8:41 PM
“su’ m”.
I had to listen to it twice.

In southern twang, nothing is certain.

Sumptin.
Definitely sumptin. Type it in at any music lyric website and you’ll get tons of results.
timmo on May 12, 2008 at 8:45 PM
Suh ‘em. I dunno.
DaveS on May 12, 2008 at 8:45 PM
In all fairness to Hillary. I have lots of relatives from the South, and this is just left over Arkansan-speak, a common verbal habit of just dropping the last letter (fixin’, drinkin’, sumpthin’) that sneaks in when someone is feeling at ease…with her huge lead in WV, she is feeling really comfy. This is nothing like that horrid accent Hillary affected when she was quoting stuff at that black church…now, that was panderingly fake and worthy of comment. This isn’t either.
marybel on May 12, 2008 at 8:49 PM
What’s funny is that it took me 3 times before I caught the sumpin. I say it that way. I didn’t realize people actually said “something” - it takes twice as long for no added benefit. Why bother?
There’s no t in sumpin. It’s really a barely pronounced f
sump(f)in.
lorien1973 on May 12, 2008 at 8:51 PM
Allah:
You need to get down south more often. She clarly said “sumfin”…
Call it tongue surfing. Bill could teach Hillary a lot!
FloridaBill on May 12, 2008 at 8:57 PM

TheSitRep on May 12, 2008 at 8:57 PM

BTW Allah:
I would say IMHO that this post “wins the cigar” for Hillary punditry…
But, somehow, that didn’t seem appropriate!
FloridaBill on May 12, 2008 at 9:01 PM
I would hate to see Allah’s face listening to the fella talking about his eye doctor appointment when the fella says he has cat’lracks.
Limerick on May 12, 2008 at 9:01 PM
How about what she is implying here?
If the Mountaineers ain’t with you it does not matter how many urban delegates you got, you ain’t going to the show.
I reading too much into it or sumpin?

You go girl!
malan89 on May 12, 2008 at 9:13 PM
Did amyone catch Chris at the beginning:
“Here’s Senator,President,Senator Clinton”!
Now that is sumpin!
Sumpin is the baster–ed version of Something,
and it takes Hillary to look down on her voters
and mimic and mock them ye all!
Now is this deliberate or a mistake on Hillarys
part,or does Hillary have a track record of
besmirching the native tongue in the various
states she campaigning in!
And whats more distrubing is that these flubs
go right over the left’s MSM collective heads
like a F-15 in full after-burner!
canopfor on May 12, 2008 at 9:16 PM
I don’t hear a t in there. It’s more of a gutteral ‘um. So I might go with suh’um.
Tuning Spork on May 12, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Or, sum’um, even.
Tuning Spork on May 12, 2008 at 9:17 PM

That is sumthin, all she has to do is win West Virginnie because no Demmicrat has won without West Virginnie.
Those super Delegates will certainly go for that, after all Herself is entitled.

So funny that Hillary dredges up the ghost of JFK’s 1960 West Virginia effort. She should have completed the obvious corollary with the following quote…
“I have just received the following telegram from my generous father: ‘Dear Jack: Don’t buy a single vote more than is necessary. I’ll help you win this election, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to pay for a landslide!’”
I wonder if this means she’ll soon be talking about JFK’s lazarus-like voting turnout in Chicago.
moxie_neanderthal on May 12, 2008 at 11:14 PM
I say “something” just like that and I’m not even from the South. “Sumpin” is a bit of an exaggeration, a lot of people drop the g’s off the ends of words and a silent t is pretty common as well. As for Hillary Clinton saying it normally, probably not, but I think it says more about the people making a big deal over her pronunciation of a word than it does about her.
Nonfactor on May 12, 2008 at 11:35 PM
y’all dont know nuten. This is App. Not north not south but in between. There is no enunciation of the ending of words. For exp., you never fully express “ing”, according to the word you are saying it either ends in “n” or “m”. What she was really saying-if true to the area- is “supen”. Short U and short E. Like-djeet-which means “did you eat”. I is pronounced either “AY” or “AR”. It is determined by the word you are using. After my first quarter at OU, which is still in the region, I came home and my aunt called me stilted because I had started to enunciate more. Not stupid people just lazy in speech and straight to the point.
mjkazee on May 12, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Allah, don’t even try. You’re a Yankee, and that’s…okay… You’ll never understand how to spell the southern language. Hell, I grew up in the south and can’t even do it most of the time.
prolix on May 12, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Sump pump?
Fort Sumter?
Hubert Sumlin?
profitsbeard on May 12, 2008 at 11:49 PM
“sumpin” is the southern version, “sometin” is the Norwegian version.
91Veteran on May 13, 2008 at 1:03 AM
OK, just listened to the video, she said “sup’em”…which is kind of the lazy, tired version.
Or it could be the John eFing Kerry version, as in, “Can I get me a huntin license here?”
91Veteran on May 13, 2008 at 1:06 AM
…sorry, that should have been “huttin license”.
91Veteran on May 13, 2008 at 1:06 AM

well if that was another attempt at southern pandering her handlers must have neglected to inform her that W.Va. actually joined the north so they could keep their slaves legally

You ain’t got no kind of feeling inside
I got something that will sure ’nuff set your stuff on fire
You refuse to put anything before your pride
I got something that will knock all your pride aside
Tell me sumptin’ good (tell me, tell me, tell me)
Tell me that you love me
Tell me sumptin’ good (tell me, tell me, tell me)
Tell me that you like it, yeah
Got no time is what you’re known to say
I’ll make you wish there were 48 hours to each day
Problem is you ain’t been loved like you should
What I got to give will sure ’nuff do you good
Tell me sumptin’ good (tell me, tell me, tell me)
Tell me that you love me
Tell me sumptin’ good (tell me, tell me, tell me)
Tell me that you like it, yeah
Captain Scarlet on May 13, 2008 at 8:39 AM
The above-reference lyrics by Stevie Wonder; recorded by Rufus. New campaign theme for Hillary ‘08. Based on a concept (”Tell me somethin’ good”) unknown to Michelle Obama.
