Video: Bob Barr’s runnin’ for president

An exclusive to Breitbart.tv, curiously enough. Drudge seems to be in the tank for Obama; if Breitbart’s going libertartian, that leaves the GOP nominee without a friend at the Report this election year. Gulp.
I’ve asked once before but I’ll ask again: How does Barr hurt McCain? His opposition to the war is front and center here (contra Ron Paul’s ads), making this an appeal aimed squarely at the sort of Paulnut isolationists who were never going to vote for an uberhawk like McCain anyway. They’ll go to the convention, throw their tantrum, and then instead of staying home in November they’ll vote for Barr. They’re a lost cause; who cares if he “finds” them? If anything, maybe he peels away a few votes from Obama among anti-war libertarians otherwise inclined to hold their noses and vote with the statists this year to get the troops out of Iraq.
Even so, the GOP doesn’t want to take any chances. Exit quotation: “Bob Barr will make it marginally easier for Barack Obama to become president. That outcome threatens every libertarian value Barr professes to champion.” Click the image to watch.

I’d vote for Barr. You know why? He doesn’t suck like everyone else. Also, Reason has some info on Bob Barr not calling for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, which is good since Iraq is about as predictable as a Terry Gilliam movie.
LT Nixon on May 12, 2008 at 7:06 PM
I will vote for Barr regardless what he stands for, since he isn’t McCain.
McCain had me nearly convinced to cross the aisle and vote for him, but Juan’s global warming crap enchilada put me back over the fence. Nationalizing all industry with a Soviet style command and control economy is not my way of promoting freedom.
tarpon on May 12, 2008 at 7:10 PM
Big egos are out in droves today. Many politicians have no clue on how to retire and age gracefully. Barr’s chances are about as big as Paul’s, and similar to my broom’s.
Entelechy on May 12, 2008 at 7:12 PM
Oh no, the Right has a Nader!
Seixon on May 12, 2008 at 7:12 PM
The American populace on the left and on the right deserves Obama. Every populace deserves its leader.
Entelechy on May 12, 2008 at 7:13 PM
To clarify, the far left/right will destroy this country from within.
Entelechy on May 12, 2008 at 7:17 PM
Another Ross Perot. I shudder to think.
Texyank on May 12, 2008 at 7:17 PM
I’ve been saying under no consequences on McCain all along. Barr is one of several third party candidates for us pissed off conservatives to send a message ala Perot to Bush 1. McCain is not a conservative. He is catering to independents and libs/dems…no reason to vote for him ever!
McCainiacs are dreaming if they think McCain can beat Obama and that was before another relatively sane option arose. McCain is toast!
jwp1964 on May 12, 2008 at 7:18 PM
Whew! When somebody in the adjacent thread said “What about Barr?” — I thought they were talking about Roseanne.

Bobby took one look at the money brought in by RuPaul and decided he would him some of that there campaign money.
Bob Barr used to be my CongressCritter and I could not stand him. I even worked hard to deny the creep a Senate Seat and the day he went down was a joyous day indeed.
Which reminds me, I miss Paul Coverdell.

Hey…it’s Billy Bob Thorton.
The Ugly American on May 12, 2008 at 7:25 PM
I don’t think that necessarily means he’s going to Barr. Barr may have just wanted it to go to a somewhat-friendly outlet.
Besides, don’t Andrew support the war in Iraq?
amerpundit on May 12, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Ugh. Don’t=doesn’t.
amerpundit on May 12, 2008 at 7:27 PM
Somebody needs to find that jerk something constructive to do. Some people just need constant attention.
rplat on May 12, 2008 at 7:31 PM
I will vote for Barr.
TheSitRep on May 12, 2008 at 7:32 PM
Barr’s quite the messenger for the libertarian cause, inasmuch as he’s more than willing to empower those that would utterly decimate the free markets of ideas and capital he values. Same jib cut as Paul. Just less inspiring.
Vizzini on May 12, 2008 at 7:34 PM
If Drudge is for Obama, it makes sense he’d promote Barr
jp on May 12, 2008 at 7:34 PM
Not sure there is much difference.
Wade on May 12, 2008 at 7:40 PM
I think it’s possible that he may also be a viable option for those Dems that refuse to vote for the opposing Dem that wins the nomination. According to polls (I know, I know) there are going to be a lot of pissed off Dems once their candidate is out. Mac would have picked up some of those at least and possibly put him over the top, this may steer those away and prevent him from winning. Not sure how likely it is that Dems would vote for Barr instead of Mac seeing as how close their agendas are, but it’s possible I suppose.
Grunt2Jag on May 12, 2008 at 7:55 PM
Kook-a-munga!
Look for the Dems to prop him up desperately.
profitsbeard on May 12, 2008 at 7:55 PM
I agree with this, except for crossing over and voting for Barr. We can’t afford to give Obambi an entree into the White House. Period.
McCain may be a damned fool on ‘global warming’, and half a dozen other issues, but he will fight the Long War, and the others won’t–not a one of them.
Besides, no matter what McCain says, India and China are not going to limit their CO2 production (nor should they), and that means we’re not going to, either.
MrLynn on May 12, 2008 at 7:55 PM

This is the wave of the future, as America becomes a banana republic we too will have 20 main line pol parties.
Our Presidents will take office when they earn 15% of the vote.
TheSitRep on May 12, 2008 at 8:01 PM
TheSitRep at 7:57 PM-
Hillary will wait in the backround until Obama trips, fumbles, self-ignites, burns up and goes down in flames by this Fall, and then Rodman will ride back in to save the Dem Party. (She won’t win, but it won’t ruin her chances for 2012.)
She’s obnoxious, shameless, and greedy for power but she’s no turncoat.
profitsbeard on May 12, 2008 at 8:01 PM
I know very little about Barr, but given what I know about the others, including the ditzy old shamnesty/global warming coot, I like him already.
MB4 on May 12, 2008 at 8:01 PM
Now if all these so called conservatives would just vote for the most conservative man in the race…but no…they will vote for amnesty and like it.
LevStrauss on May 12, 2008 at 8:09 PM
TheSitRep on May 12, 2008 at 8:01 PM
I’d say we are a banana republic right now with two false choices. Of course the word republic is misleading because we are not a republic, we are a federal democracy, we killed the Republic long ago.
LevStrauss on May 12, 2008 at 8:12 PM
Can’t we get a single jackass out of all these to SECURE THE DAMN BORDER? I would seriously vote for a Clinton at this point if they would just take a strong immigration stance.
Vigilante on May 12, 2008 at 8:25 PM
Darn… just when I had decided to hold my nose and vote for McCain… I still might… but this “LaRaza Love” and global warming “tour” is making it even more difficult. Maybe the libertarian party can become viable… hope, change, yes they can! My first focus, beyond all, is to keep Obama out of the whitehouse. Give the American people time to watch the deomcratic run congress spin it’s wheels and line their pockets at the expense of the taxpayer. I’m counting the days to Boston Tea Party part 2.
BadBrad on May 12, 2008 at 8:25 PM
I’m sorry, was that a typo? Don’t you mean pseudo-hawk?
Snake307 on May 12, 2008 at 8:42 PM
If all these “so-called conservatives” would have voted for the most conservative man in the race, the Republican would win in November in a massive landslide, and it wouldn’t be McCain.
gryphon202 on May 12, 2008 at 8:43 PM
We people in the Atlanta metro area are quite even-handed in our politics. Why, we had a moronic Democrat (Cynthia McKinney) and a moronic Republican (Barr) representing us in Congress at the same time!
radjah shelduck on May 12, 2008 at 8:47 PM
It’s been said on this board by others, and I’ll repeat it now: the only reason McCain may lose this race, is if “Republicans” and “conservatives” cause him to lose it.

If McCain loses the race, let me rephrase that, when McCain loses the race in November, they’ll blame Conservatives, and they’ll blame the Enforcement first boarder folks, but in reality, it’s the Country Club Blue Blood Republicans who have taken the party to where it has no place being that are losing this election.
Fine with me. We needed a Jerry Ford to get a Jimmy Carter, and we needed Carter to get Reagan.
Snake307 on May 12, 2008 at 9:15 PM
He should be barred.
Travis1 on May 12, 2008 at 9:20 PM
It’s clear that both the Democrat and Republican parties have become corrupt and disinterested in serving anything other than their own ambitions. It’s time for new parties. As a libertarian, I’m hoping that if nothing else, a candidate like Paul or Barr will illuminate just how far this country has strayed from its founding principles. More power to Barr.

Sorry Baub!…The new “smart glasses” didn’t win me over any more than the old ones. they’re ALL whores.

HunnyWaggin on May 12, 2008 at 9:25 PM
“Paul”?…wow…I’m sorry…can’t ever do it. All the important stuff aside, i must AT LEAST vote for a man that will look SOMEWHAT masculine. Ron Paul looks (and acts) like a flaming queer. Can’t do it. Ever. It would be worse than voting for….

VolMagic on May 12, 2008 at 9:36 PM
Bob Barr used to be my Congressman (I’m from Marietta) and I would never vote him into national office. He’s a shameless attention-whore with the worst kind of Fundamentalist Christian nanny-state mixed in with Libertarian isolationism. He’s a nut, a loon, an outlier, and I wish he would just go and live quietly.

HunnyWaggin on May 12, 2008 at 9:56 PM
Send a message send a message blah blah blah. Same old Ross Perot talking points. I got burned then and I’m not going through it again. If you want to send a message then join in local gov and work your way up. Starting at the top has never a new party made. Well unless you have an alternate definition of success.
- The Cat
P.S. People who are too thick to understand the past are doomed to vote 3rd party in a presidential election.
MirCat on May 12, 2008 at 9:56 PM
I agree. I was burned by Perot as well. Never…ever again. From now on, when i think about voting 3rd party, i stop, and I think to myself…”Who am I? why am i here?”

McCains’ not republican he is a liberal democrat hiding in Republican hides.
How can you say he will do the right thing in Iraq when he has traded in every other Republican position for a Demmi one when someone from the press wispered in his ear he might get some airtime if he did.
The Party foisted this fool on us and the party will pay for it. Obammy or Herself will destroy him in a debate.
dhunter on May 12, 2008 at 10:48 PM

HunnyWaggin on May 12, 2008 at 10:50 PM
Maybe because he’s a liberal? Maybe because he indicated we were racist because we want our damn laws enforced? Maybe we believe in free speech? Maybe because we believe global warming is a crock? Maybe because we are not recent pandering converts to tax cuts? Shall I go on? If we don’t support him it’s because he hasn’t earned it through words or deeds. We didn’t leave the Repubs YOU left us!

He needs to lose the ’stache. I don’t think you can run for the nation’s highest office with that kind of facial hair. In fact, I almost want to see him from behind to make sure he’s not going hippie with a pony tail.
bayam on May 12, 2008 at 11:37 PM
What you’re saying has a lot of merit.
I’m surprised that more conservatives haven’t turned in the direction of Barr and Henry Hyde. Both cite all the above as greater threats to the nation and constitution than nutjobs from the Middle East. When it comes to taking a strong position against big government and keeping the feds at bay, if conservatives don’t take a stand, who will?
bayam on May 12, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Look, a message to my Conservative friends: We Libertarian Republicans desperately wish to support John McCain. But he has given us little if any reason to do so. He’s made countless outreach efforts to you all Conservatives. What has he done for the Libertarian Right?
Has he met with the Cato Institute Board?
Has he granted Reason Magazine an interview?
Has he offered to address the upcomming Libertarian Party convention in Denver? Or, even to get a hospitality suite?
Has he approached the Republican Liberty Caucus, who would be most open to his advances?
Has he offered to appear on libertarian radio shows like “Libertarian Politics Live”, on Blog Talk Radio, or even Neal Boortz, or Larry Elder?
McCain and his team have done nothing to earn libertarian support.
He’s got one last chance: He could appoint a libertarian VP like Sarah Palin of Alaska, Butch Otter of Idaho, fmr. New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, or someone acceptable to libertarians like Gov. Mark Sanford of SC.
Without that, he risks losing the entire libertarian voting bloc, including Libertarian Republicans, to Bob Barr and the Libertarian Party this year.

Let’s put this guy on a horse with Ron Paul, and let them fight windmills on Nantucket with Ted Kennedy and John Kerry.
But Hot Air-heads shouldn’t waste their votes on this guy. We need to put the brake on Barack, and McCain is the only man who can do it. He needs all the help he can get.

There’s something disturbing about the propensity for people to behave this year as if it were a peacetime election. It’s not.
