Report: Huckabee tops McCain’s VP shortlist?

Just this morning, Bob Novak quoted Christian bigwig Michael Farris as saying, “I understand he is not under consideration.” Said Huck himself just two short months ago, “We have been given every signal that is not going to be considered.” And yet:
Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain’s short list for a running mate. At least that’s the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain’s inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee’s campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm…
Let me add that a top Republican political strategist told me about a month ago that he also believed Huckabee to be the leading veep contender.
What’s changed in two months? For starters, remember that “Anyone but Mitt” campaign by Paul Weyrich and a bunch of other evangelical leaders? McCain can’t help but be jittery at seeing the Christian base taking a keen interest in his VP pick, especially with stories about their remorse for not having backed Huck in the primary circulating. Another thought: Romney’s always been touted as the logical pick for VP because of his fundraising prowess, to help close the money gap with Obama, but revisit this post from early March about Huckabee’s media savvy. By one estimate, the free coverage he received from the likes of Scarborough, Colbert, and the rest of the talk show circuit was worth $125 million in paid ads, more than Mitt could ever raise (especially with McCain accepting public financing). Having not one but two media darlings on the GOP ticket might convince the press to go merely hip-deep into the tank for Obama instead of face-first, like they’re planning. Finally, now that Barry O’s the nominee, McCain has both a worry and an opportunity that he wouldn’t have had opposite Hillary: Turnout among black voters in the south is sure to be huge this year, which, coupled with a weak turnout among southern evangelicals, could be lethal by putting red states in play. Adding a prominent Christian to the ticket solves that problem and frees McCain up to focus on the battlegrounds instead of fighting a rearguard action to preserve his base. Adding Huckabee specifically to the ticket, with his blue-collar populist rhetoric, holds an extra advantage in giving him a shot at Hillary’s base of working-class Democrats in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
All of which is to say, while Hot Air readers might not like this idea, I can understand why Team Maverick might. Exit question: Who else will be joining me now in writing in Hillary this year?

That’s two Huckabee supporters in this thread who have cast doubt on the faith of others, based on political opinions.
Claaasy.

CPAC stands for out of touch elitists. Ever since Ann Coulter supported liberal leaning Romney and called Mike a “stupid Christian”, she scares me, and I used to be a big fan (purchased her book Godless and liked it).
apacalyps on May 12, 2008 at 8:44 PM
I noticed that too. I guess when you don’t have the facts on your side you have to settle for whatever argument you can muster.
My response was “Jesus Christ” because I’m not looking for my elected officials to double up as my spiritual leadership - a concept Jesus opposed as well.

Exactly right Slublog. The christian right is neither.

Roger Waters on May 12, 2008 at 8:53 PM
You seem to be desperately clinging to that quote by Ed. I respect Ed, but I do my own thinking. I suggest you do the same.
Huckabee is an extremely poor choice and a completely duplicitous politician. He’ll tell you what he thinks you want to hear, and you’re just the type to lap it up and believe it and repeatedly quote him. But you totally ignore evidence to the contrary out of the Huckster’s own mouth.
He cannot be trusted.
techno_barbarian on May 12, 2008 at 8:55 PM
I am not going to vote for someone because they are a Christian. I am going to vote for someone because they can actually lead our nation out of its current situation, into a better one.
John McCain already seems clueless about our economy, and the fact that he is light on securing our borders spoke volumes to me.
Huckabee wants to enact some sort of affirmative action for kids of illegal immigrants may “be dandy,” but what about the kids of American citizens for crying out loud?
Grrrrr!!!!!!!!!!
Darnell Clayton on May 12, 2008 at 8:55 PM
slubog,
since when did telling the truth(or casting doubt on the “faith” of others” as you say) become wrong?
I’ll tell you when…on the day you became brainwashed by liberalism’s central tenet: there is no absolute truth.
There is absolute truth!
One of the things that the truth does is it exposes lies.
It is God’s nature to expose the truth.
Jesus is the TRUTH!
Not only is He the Truth but Jesus says “I AM TRUTH”!
We are sanctified and regenerated by speaking truth.
Your PC garbage is simply that…garbage.
SaintOlaf on May 12, 2008 at 8:56 PM
You are one of the biggest phonies here. When you identify yourself as an Evangelical, you give the rest of them a bad name. You don’t believe the Bible is the literal Word of God. You doubt Noah’s flood. You doubt the literal 6 day creation in Genesis. You attack Christians. Listen to you here, “I would leave the party if it become the one Huck and political evangelicals would like it to be.” You are such a scammer.
apacalyps on May 12, 2008 at 8:57 PM
I wouldn’t go that far, since I’m both Christian and conservative. I’m simply amazed that someone like Huckabee can inspire such loyalty.

Slublog on May 12, 2008 at 9:01 PM
Unfortunately, now and for the foreseeable future, declaring oneself as being religious is a necessary condition to winning national office (and for most lower offices as well). This has led to many phony declarations of deep commitment to one sect or another in order to get elected.
However, not even all religious cults are treated equally as has been seen with the treatment reserved for Mitt Romney. In my opinion the cult founded by that real huckster Joseph Smith is a ridiculous religious scam and its teachings really do require a willing suspension of disbelief to be accepted. In spite of this I found Romney to be an honest man of measurable accomplishments who did not try to proselytize for his cult while running for public office. His religious views were nevertheless used against him and sometimes in the most overt and shameful manner.
On the other hand Rev. Huckabee ran wearing his religion on his sleeve and, given that his fundamentalist views also require waiving natural law and logic in some instances I found his supporters disingenuous when attacking Romney.
To sum it up I think that Mitt Romney understands the principle of the separation of Church and State and I could support a McCain-Romney ticket, but never a McCain-Huckster one.

I love how abortion is the deciding issue that makes one a “true conservative”. I have to love you one issue voters who think Huck is a “true conservative” because he BELIEVES. Symbolism over substance, he is a believer, so lets call him a conservative, and anyone who says otherwise isn’t a “true Christian” or a “true conservative” lol.
Folks, the President has very little power when it comes to the abortion issue. Your focus on this issue should be with Congress, not with Judges or the President who might appoint the right Judges.
Really when it comes to President it is better to vote for someone who is fiscally responsible, loves freedom, understands capitalism, and understands his primary role is to protect us from the world…not from ourselves, and the second role is to protect us from a tyrannical Congress and Judges( likewise Congress should protect us from tyrannical Judges and a tyrannical President going crazy with executive orders ). Abortion is a nice issue to hang your hat on, but really honestly, how much do you think the President can really do? He is not the King.

Cute.
That passage speaks of judging by the right standards. The Pharisees looked at Jesus’ miracles and saw the work of demons. Their judgment was quite obviously misguided.
In the same way, you are using questionable standards to judge people on this blog. Don’t judge according to appearances.

Great to have you back brother. You are TOTALLY RIGHT! September 11, 2001 was the most horrific day in the history of the United States of America to date, and it was an opportunity for America to wake up from it’s slumber. It did for a while, right after 911 people started calling upon the Lord again, but now they don’t want Him again, and are doing everything to keep Him out of their lives.

God’s fiery destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their extremely sinful practices (see Genesis 18–19) should act as a warning for America:
“Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven… Turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes… making them an ensample (example) unto those that after should live ungodly.” Genesis 19:24, 2 Peter 2:6
The wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah with their filthy conversation and rampant sodomy brought divine destruction upon them. Exiting question: How is today’s America any different than Sodom and Gomorrah?

You have no clue what you’re even saying. It’s astounding this garbage. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 6:6-7,
“And these words, which I (God) command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
That is a reminder to keep God involved in everything we do and to pass His values on from generation to generation.
How do you respond?

I don’t even think Mike should take the VP job. I’m not against it, but I think doing so might cause him to give up some of his moral conviction on certain issues. You could say McCain as Prez might corrupt Huckabee to a certain extent. On the flip-side of it, Huck as VP could make McCain a better President as you would have someone there to encourage him to stick to conservative policies.

I think Allahpundit’s reasons cited for why McCain should consider Huckabee are precisely the reasons he should not select him. In recent times, balancing a ticket seems only to hurt the presidential candidate by focusing the public on the problems with the presidential candidate.
Really, McCain should pick another “Mavericky” candidate to really drive home what in an otherwise Democrat year are McCain’s particular strength. Now if only Hagel weren’t so wrong on the war, he’d be the type. As much as he’s identified as part of the ultra right, Gingrich is Mavricky enough to reinforce McCain’s strenghts. Gingrich has shown the capacity for taking bold action, perhaps form a bit more conservative angle. True, Gingrich has strongly disagreed with McCain on things like campaign finance reform, but his bipartison efforts on the environment and health care would bolster McCain’s purported bipartisan credentials.

You are WRONG Slublog. Saint Olaf is absolutely correct. One of the things that the truth does is it exposes lies. God’s nature exposes the truth. I love that. It is so true! Of course we cannot say who is saved and going to heaven. Only God can make that judgment. But, God has commanded us to “judge righteous judgement.”
“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” John 7:24
We should be able to recognize false teachers and “from such turn away.” Matthew 7:15-20
(ie, like phony Christian’s).
apacalyps on May 12, 2008 at 10:08 PM
That’s exactly right! You should keep God in your heart, and teach your children from generation to generation.
The only way you are going to change hearts and minds is not to force it by a huckamonster, but to teach not only by example but by love. Not by judging or calling people names, or telling them they are not this or that.

No doubt, the LAST thing that either of you guys want/need is my endorsement. The other participants at HotAir already think that I am a loon — because of my talking collie. (Welcome to my world.)
Nevertheless, I must say that I always read your posts and give them serious consideration. While I appreciate your posts, I don’t really need the resident HotAir prophets of doom to convince me to repent (although other particpants here may). I, for one, have already made my peace with God. In fact, I don’t even need the books of Daniel/Revelation in order to “sit-up and take notice.” All I need is the words of Jesus Himself contained in the Gospels. His Words SHOULD be making the secular people everywhere “more jittery than a feral feline trapped in the city dog pound”.
As I see it, the birth pangs (that Jesus spoke of) which serve as the early warning signs of The End are disturbingly all-too-apparent. The series of natural disasters that we have all witnessed in the past 40 months are ominous indeed. The 2004 Tsunami was the “wake-up” call for me. The events that unfolded are just too eerily close to the description of the end times found in the book of Luke. Since then, the frequency of natural disasters seems to have intensified (or is it my imagination?). The 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita that followed the 4 Florida hurricanes of 2004, the massive earthquake in Pakistan, the cyclone in Myanmar, and now the earthquake in China (what did I miss?).
All I can say is that anyone that simply dismisses the warning signs as coincidence, isn’t doing themselves any favors. I’m an OLD guy. I witnessed the 50s and 60s. I don’t recall any other time in my life in which natural disasters have unfolded with THIS frequency of occurance.
Or was I just oblivious when I was younger. Anyone got relevent statistics?

In 1992 Huckabee said, “that homosexuality was an “aberrant, unnatural and sinful lifestyle” that posed “a dangerous public health risk.” Huckabee is waiting for Moses to okay gays. not ignoring Scripture.
Ignoring Spike Jones playing Handel’s MESSIAH with a bike horn and a whoopee cushion.
You may sorta know the words, but you’re flunking the spiritual Turing test.

I still think, in the end, he picks Joe Loserman.

McCain is trying real hard to loose my vote.

Solid conservative Duncan Hunter endorsed Mike Huckabee.
“I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail,” Hunter said in a statement. “Of the remaining candidates I feel that he is strongly committed to strengthening national defense, constructing the border fence and meeting the challenge of China’s emergence as a military superpower that is taking large portions of America’s industrial base.”
Okay. Go ahead. Bash Duncan. Pssst. He’s a Christian. That might make it more delightful for you.

As I quoted before:
The president of the Southern Baptist Convention blamed the decline (of baptisms)in part on a perception that its followers are “mean-spirited, hurtful and angry.”
No one has commented on it, but NO DUH!

I had reluctantly prepared to vote for McCain in November. I agreed with his positions on the war on terror and judicial nominations even though I am appalled with his stance on illegal immigration and global warming. However, if he does take the Huckster as his VP then I will probably write in someone else (probably Fred). Now, as to our resident ‘hell and brimstone’ writer on this site, your constant comments as to how evil and bad our great country is makes me sick. This is the greatest country on the planet and I am very proud that I had the honor to serve in the U.S. Army and that my son is currently serving. When you make the ‘evil U.S.’ comments you sound just like the Code Pink wackos. And for what it’s worth, I am a son of the south and do not believe in the Bible literally, i.e., seven days of creation, Noah’s ark, etc.. I grew up with people who felt they had to shove their religion in your face and that if you did not accept it you would go to hell. However, this is what makes this country so great is that you have the right to say what you do, just as anyone else.

Okay, Slublog. Let’s settle this right now, right here. According to you, how does a Christian judge a false prophet or a phony religious leader/person?
apacalyps on May 12, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Maybe this will help.

Geez, I hope not. John is already making it hard to vote for him. One more climate change al gore moment and I’ll have to drink twice as much before I pull the lever for him.

Keep sounding the last days alarm clock CyberCipher.
“But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.” Ezekiel 33:6
May the Lord give you His wisdom in all things.

More than words on a screen.
The word used throughout the New Testament is fruit.
Slublog on May 12, 2008 at 11:36 PM
My pastor. Period. Although I do take the thoughts of men like John Piper, JI Packer, CJ Mahaney and others under advisement as well, on my pastor’s recommendation. There is no politician, particularly Huckabee whose policies ultimately glorify government and not God, that I follow, much less worship the way you seem to do. You’re trying to build the wrong kingdom, apacalyps.
Laura on May 12, 2008 at 11:39 PM
Oh, the hypocrisy. Nope- not judging at all, are you?
But thanks for making Christians look hyper-judgemental, spiteful and intolerant of other views. I’m sure that’s what Jesus would’ve wanted. You are giving a horrible example of how a Christian should act.
Hollowpoint on May 12, 2008 at 11:47 PM
There is a big difference austin. If you don’t like Huckabee. No problem. That is your right. The people who offer reasonable and even sharp criticism of Huckabee and can debate respectfully and civilly, I have no problem with. My specific beef is with these counterfeit (make a copy of with the intent to deceive) believers who repeatedly use the phrase “Christian” and “Evangelical” in order to launch a gutter campaign against Huckabee. Gutter politics is a person who makes deceitful pretenses to perpuate lies and distortions about an opponent. Just as a “tree is known by its fruit”, TRUE CHRISTIANS should be able to recognize false teachers and “reprove (refute) them.” Ephesians 5:11
They’re getting called out.

Personally I quit going to church because it was filled to the brim with overbearing idiots like yourself.
I took it literally when I heard, “None come to the Father but by Me”. So why would I want a middle man or woman between me and my Lord?
You presume too much. I ask for wisdom the eyes of my understanding to be opened. And I recieve that for which I ask.
You Huckster zealots sound more like that disgrace rev phelps than the tender Christians you’re claiming to be.
If being what you are is what it means to be Christian. I’ll pass and go with what’s worked for me.
God is cringing at some of the crap you’re spouting in this thread.

John McCain is an abortionist? Wow….and I thought it was only the left who called military pilots baby killers. Good to know.
