Pat Buchanan to Lieberman: Why aren’t we bombing Iran now?

Pat Buchanan interviewed Joe Lieberman, the latter from a John McCain campaign office, and demanded an answer as to why we haven’t started singing McCain’s version of Barbara Ann. Lieberman seems somewhat taken aback by Buchanan’s enthusiasm for military engagement against Iran, and understandably so given Buchanan’s relentless isolationism in almost any other context:

Amusingly, Pat Buchanan brings up the example of Cambodia during the Vietnam War, one of the escalations that made the Vietnam War so unpopular and one of the points occasionally used by isolationists to show how interventions can get out of hand. Offering Nixon’s war policy in 2008 to the McCain campaign doesn’t sound like a friendly act on Buchanan’s part. Is this the man who argued that the Iraq War was set in motion by a cabal of neoconservatives, especially Jewish conservatives, who had Israel’s interests more in mind than America’s?

The difference between Cambodia then and Iran now is that Iran could seriously threaten our interests in the region, where Cambodia was less a threat and more of a nuisance. Cambodia didn’t have medium- and long-range missiles that could hit targets thousands of miles away, nor could it shut down a large part of petroleum exports by closing the Straits of Hormuz. Iran qualitatively differs from Cambodia in that an attack on Iran would likely lead to a regional war for which we have too few military assets and absolutely no political will to fight — thanks in large part to people like Pat Buchanan.

The Bush administration needs to put more pressure on Iran, but launching air strikes into Iranian territory would only bolster the mullahcracy’s grip on power. We need to act against their proxies, which we already have done in supporting Nouri al-Malik in Basra and Sadr City. Iran knows this, which is why Tehran demanded an end to operations in both places before engaging in security talks. If the time comes for airstrikes, then they have to be massive and conclusory. If we leave their military with the ability to respond, we will quickly find out that they have more resources and willingness to apply them than did Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Update (AP): Note to Buchanan: Destroying Iran’s nuke facilities presupposes that we can find all of them, which isn’t at all certain given what a good job Syria did at hiding theirs.

According to the ISIS report to be released this week, the fake roof was just the start. Syrian engineers went to “astonishing lengths” to hide cooling and ventilation systems, power lines and other features that normally are telltale signs of a nuclear reactor, authors David Albright and Paul Brannan wrote.

For example, the main building appears small and shallow from the air, but it was evidently built over large underground chambers — tens of meters in depth — that were large enough to house the nuclear reactor, as well as a reserve water-storage tank and pools for spent fuel rods, the report said.

We should do a massive air drop of Barbie and SpongeBob.
Take them down from within.

I just playing around with Google’s “street view” feature.

It is amazing.

If Google can do that, one would think the US government can do something similar but much more advanced in Iran.

Man red leasso sucks! 85% of the time it does not work. Pity, I wanted to hear this interview.

What is the problem with red lasso? It worked fine at first – now it is next to worthless.

Pat Buchanan, the Republican that never was, the conservative that never is.

Richard Romano on May 12, 2008 at 5:42 PM

You can’t bomb knowledge. Bombing Iran’s program will only delay things for a few years.

Another key differnece–I don’t think the military had rock solid evidence that Camobdia was helping supply the Vietnamese with bombs that are/were killing and maiming our troops.

Pat Buchanan has become a poor excuse for a “conservative”, and the liberals’ best poster child for a conservative gone off the deep end. He should give up TV and become Ron Paul’s running mate.

He might have been a slow learner, but al-Maliki has become our best friend in limiting Iran’s ambitions to set up a pan-Shia superstate. Al-Sadr’s goons have managed to turn the Iraqi Shiites against him much as al Qaeda turned the Sunnis against them. This is no longer Shi’ite vs. Sunni, it’s Babylon vs. Persia, and Babylon is now our ally.

History makes strange bedfellows–Persia used to be our ally, until Jimmuh Carter messed that up…

Sometimes you just need to be a little patient with RedLasso – let it load, hit pause and then play again, etc.

CK MacLeod on May 12, 2008 at 5:55 PM

If you have a problem running videos and are running Google Accelerator, turn it off. I went through weeks of missing videos until I tried that. Red Lasso works fine for me now.

If Lieberman wasn’t a pro-abortion hack, I would vote for him. Cambodia didn’t float bamboo fishing boats over and ram them into Fisherman’s Wharf. That would have been the biggest military strike they were capable of. It’s amazing that these big brains don’t get the significant differences between the Vietnam era and the current war when it comes to how easily we can be hit, and it could be nuclear or biological. This time the Dems can’t just leave behind our allies to suffer genocide since we’ll get hit right after it.

Well, they could play it the way the Israelis did with Osirak reactor. Off a few French nuclear scientists as a warning, then bomb the crap out of it. Seems to have stopped Saddam in his tracks for a while, now didn’t it?

mjk on May 12, 2008 at 6:21 PM

Or they could just level all of Iran. That would probably “delay” lots of things for many years.

:)

mjk on May 12, 2008 at 6:22 PM

Well… actually to be fair Nixon’s war policy was a political winner.

That’s why if the Iraq war becomes the defining issue of the campaign McCain will likely win.

Sackett on May 12, 2008 at 6:32 PM

What is the problem with red lasso?

Has always worked like a charm for me.

peacenprosperity on May 12, 2008 at 6:46 PM

For the first time ever, RedLasso actually worked for me.

I’ve come to admire Joe L. Heck, a choice between Joe and John would be almost a tossup. (And either would be infinitely better than Borat Barak or Billary.)

Pat Buchanan has no influence, nobody listens to him.

The Bush administration needs to put more pressure on Iran, but launching air strikes into Iranian territory would only bolster the mullahcracy’s grip on power.

This bit of conventional wisdom is not persuasive. The mullahs are not on the verge of being toppled. There is no serious campaign to oust them. Therefore one should accept they will hold on to power and act on that basis.

How could it get any tighter? No Mullahs = No Mullahcracy

They get the clips from where they can get the clips. If they were served up anywhere else you know they would. And do. Do you think they have a bank of computers hooked to a bank of tuners to record and cut everything that comes over the wire?

The logic is astounding.

MirCat on May 12, 2008 at 8:04 PM

Well, I think we are to a point where we have to ask bluntly, how long will Iran (and its proxy Hezbollah) continue to get away with all they are doing without real consequences?

CP on May 12, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Is there any law that keeps us from bombing military parades?

Greenhorn on May 12, 2008 at 10:12 PM

For one thing at my job youtube is web blacked the only time I can ever watch clips on this site is when you use Redlasso, so I say keep up the good work. As for the morons that continue to besmirch the credibility of Pat Buchanan. whatever you think of his current Neo-Isolationist attitude now this man has done more for the Conservative movement in his lifetime than any of us have. He is right about the demise of the West, He is dead right about illegal immigration, and a whole host of other things. If you want to crap on him for his stance on the war that’s fine but do not discount all the good work he has done in his life. That includes letting go of and getting beyond the one or two stupid things he might have said 20 or 30 years ago.

Joey1974 on May 12, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Buchanan is right. He may be against the war but his larger point is that if you know Iran is doing this, then strike them. Case closed. We’re in there. Why let more American lives be put at risk?

This half war BS is exactly that: BS.

You’re either in it to win it or you should get the F out.

Metro on May 12, 2008 at 11:11 PM

Here’s the point: If Islamic extremists are trying to kill you and your family, wouldn’t you want to kill them first? Or, do you want your own family to die because you are being politically correct? Get sensible!

Travis1 on May 12, 2008 at 11:51 PM

Cambodia was less a threat and more of a nuisance

Cambodia was not armining the NVA and Viet Cong nor actively participating in the conflict. The US attacks on Cambodia were attacks on bases – sanctuaries – used by the NVA and Viet Cong. Part of the Ho Chi Min trail ran through Cambodia and Laos.

Cambodia’s stated policy was neutrality until 1969 when Prince Norodom Sihanouk declared them NVA/VC no longer welcome in Cambodia. Nixon used that policy change to begin the bombing campaign but did not disclose it publicly.

The analogy today would be attacking AQ basis in Waseristan w/o prior approval of the Pak Government.

TheBigOldDog on May 13, 2008 at 6:53 AM

If this was AP’s thread, he’d be flaming the red lasso complainers by now.

Red Lasso doesn’t work for me either!
