No, Obama didn’t call Israel a “constant sore”

Ed already made this point but it’s worth reiterating now that GOP luminaries like Boehner and Eric Cantor are jumping in to demagogue it. Here’s the quote from Obama’s Atlantic interview:
JG: Do you think that Israel is a drag on America’s reputation overseas?
BO: No, no, no. But what I think is that this constant wound, that this constant sore, does infect all of our foreign policy. The lack of a resolution to this problem provides an excuse for anti-American militant jihadists to engage in inexcusable actions, and so we have a national-security interest in solving this, and I also believe that Israel has a security interest in solving this because I believe that the status quo is unsustainable. I am absolutely convinced of that, and some of the tensions that might arise between me and some of the more hawkish elements in the Jewish community in the United States might stem from the fact that I’m not going to blindly adhere to whatever the most hawkish position is just because that’s the safest ground politically.
Per the bold part, as noted by Goldfarb and Rich Lowry, the “wound” he’s describing is obviously the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, not Israel itself. Do you honestly think a guy willing to carve out a special exception to his “I’ll talk to anyone” foreign policy for Hamas in order to appeal to pro-Israeli voters is going to turn around and say something Ahmadinejadesque about Israel being a festering wound? Particularly when, in the same breath, he derides jihadists who use Palestinian grievances as a pretext for atrocities? If anything, his rhetoric on Israel throughout the campaign has been suspiciously rosy, designed as it is to calm fears (or hopes, in the case of Palestinian Americans) that the senate’s most liberal member might share the left’s “nuanced” view of Zionism. He’s not trying to sound like dKos; he’s trying not to sound like dKos. I hate to have to defend him, but after writing umpteen posts about him and his cronies distorting McCain’s “100 years” comment it’d be disingenuous to sit by while the countersmear goes to work.
Read Goldfarb’s post about the real problem with what Obama said. I don’t think he meant that Israel vs. Palestine informs literally every single foreign policy problem we have, but I wouldn’t mind hearing him spin that out a bit. If, as he rightly says, the conflict is being exploited by regressive elements to further their own agendas, why does he think those elements will ever let it be settled?

Ok, so he isn’t calling Israel a sore. But, unless I’m misunderstanding this bold part, he buys into the line that the conflict “infects” all of our foreign policy? Isn’t that a rather, er, strange thing to say?

Why not? They distorted McCain’s comments and attacked him with it so why not have some fun with taking his comments out of context as well? Plus, it would be really funny watching the media uproar about it and coming to Obama’s defense.

I don’t think Obama called Israel a “sore” either, but I do have a problem with the statement that followed.
The lack of a resolution implies concessions by the Israelis are what is necessary and that if Israel gives up land, Hamas will suddenly stop the rocket attacks. Going a step further, he may believe that Iran will halt its activities if Israel gives in to Hamas. We all know that’s not true. Jihadists everywhere will only be emboldened to continue attacks against Western civilization.
But what the hey. Olmert and our own State Department seem to agree with Obama.

Hmmm… funny thing… there was no Palestine before 67.
Palestinians want a contiguous state… meaning they have free access from Gaza, to the West Bank… which cuts Israel in half.
So you can have a contiguous Palestine… which never existed before (west bank was Jordan, Gaza was Egypt) or you can have a contiguous Israel… its physicaly impossible to have both.

And this is exactly right. Clinton had Israel offer Abu Jihad (Arafat) basically everything he wanted in discussions. Arafat couldn’t take ‘yes’ for an answer.
Terrorists use this issue as an excuse. They’ll always find some excuse to justify their barbaric behavior. My dog told me to do it, my cleric told me to do it, God told me he would reward me for killing Jews. . . whatever excuse they want to use they will.
No amount of negotiating will account for the fact that the only thing that Palestinians and many Arabs want is for all the Jews to be dead and gone. They don’t want peace. Nothing we do will help them attain peace until they want it. They complain about Israeli heavy handedness, but it’s all for security. If Israel could live in peace Palestinians would have more freedom. But Israel can’t give in to threats and terror or the terror and threats will never end until the Israelis are all dead.
Israel isn’t our issue. Everyone in the world should have the basic right to self defense. If the Palestinians want to fight, I’d say it is amazing how much restraint Israel has shown. If it were happening in America we would have wiped out the Palestinians already. Israel is our friend, they always will be. We don’t have to take sides to recognize Israel’s need to defend themselves. If the Palestinians, terrorists, or Arabs have a problem with that they’ll just have to deal with it. . . but it isn’t our fault no matter what excuse terrorists and Arabs might use.

Saddam Hussein’s gun-running bagman Nadhmi Auchi
SNOBama’s anti-Semitic “advisors”:
Samantha Power
Edward Said
Rashid Khalidi

While it would make a great ad, it would be hypocritical and I’m inclined to agree with AP on this one. Although I’m sure some group will turn it into an ad, and then we’ll all get the extreme joy of watching Dean and McCain denounce it.
BadgerHawk on May 12, 2008 at 11:59 PM
People from all the surrounding “Arab” nations attack you- from the first day your country to established by the U.N. mandate- and you are the “constant sore”?
The “wound” is really the phony “Palestinians”, who could have accepted peace AND THEIR OWN STATE in 1948, but prefer to seethe and plot to subjugate and annihilate the Jews in order to fulfill the 7th century dogma “Islam must dominate” proclaimed by the bloodthirsty warlord Mohammad.
There is no criticism of this malignant, imperialistic, and intolerant ideology by Barry O, though.
If only the Jews would stop defending themselves against Islamofascistic terror, all would be marzipan and zam-zam water in the region.

Kevin M on May 13, 2008 at 2:03 AM
AP, I’ve long hoped you’d pull out of this trend of policing anti-Obama or anti-Glacier or anti-Dem political rhetoric with an almost obsessive fastidiousness. I’ve been seeing a younger me, when I was doing much the same thing inside the Beltway, obsessed that my side prevailed for the right reasons, with the absolutely unimpeachably correct rhetoric and themes.
But the act’s worn thin.
Obama couldn’t staff ME on foreign policy – or, frankly, anything else, aside perhaps from Chicago machine politics -yes, he’s even more innocent and ignorant and unsophisticated than Bill Clinton was.
Listen, AP, to this jaw-droppingly sophomoric line from Obama about giving an adversary “an excuse”. Obama says it all the time – it reflects his level of understanding of world affairs, and that of his fans and much of the Beltway establishment: it’s about 7th or 8th grade, in my personal growth timeline. Sovereign governments of thugs and dictators and zealots and others with adverse agendas need “excuses” to do what they do. Unbelievable that an adult could actually say or believe this.
But in their millions, they do. They think of the WaPo and the NYT as giving them a solid link to the world they live in. They can hear a line like the one about “excuses” and not do a double-take. They can read Friedman without laughing or shaking their heads. They can read Zakaria or Cohen or Dowd at all.
And I fear, dear AP, that you show quite a bit of this pattern yourself. Your analysis of foreign policy and especially Iraq doesn’t show anything outside the Beltway mindset. Your instincts and integrity and sympathies are impeccable. But some of the lightweight kool-aid is leaking into your cocktail, and it’s been showing for some time. Even when my experience was limited to the Beltway variety, I had a strong feeling I was subsisting on partial information and extremely limited wisdom.
Almost every word Obama speaks on foreign policy is cringe-worthy – he’s an embarrassment to any knowledgeable and sane person. So the possible distortion of a phrase or two is, to borrow one of his stupefyingly transparent dodges, a “distraction”. His general cluelessness and substantive emptiness are the issue.
Many’s the time I wish I could go to the old AP site to find fresh, hilarious, incredibly witty and intelligent satire of the first order. I was poised to buy some friends the “Six Days, B*tch” coffee mugs when your old site went into amber.
But you’ll want to think twice here about playing the punctilious pedant when it comes to defending the opposition from even the most glancing kidney-punch. We’ve got a rough patch to get through, and the odds are better with the unbearable McCain than the unthinkable Obama. The opposition has forever blackened their names by dumping poison into the system, injecting a level of bad faith not seen since the Civil Wsr (Bush lied, etc.), all while the nation confronts as vile an enemy as it’s ever seen. Even a cheap shot, if it helps further tarnish the twink from Chicago, will in the end have been for the best. And those who launch that cheap shot haven’t come within a light year, substantively or ethically speaking, of opposition folks up to and including the most senior public office-holders.

Israel’s existance is the problem he speaks about, because Al Burack knows very well that the only solution that would deny the Islamist their “excuse for inexcusable actions” in his fellow radical leftist minds is Israel being dismantled.
So – YES, he did speak of Israel itself as a constant sore.

Niko on May 13, 2008 at 3:41 AM
I hear you AP and Capt. Ed, and applaud the effort not to demagogue by taking certain phrases out of context.
But this interview is very disturbing. When discussing the solution to the “constant sore,” Obama speaks only of what he would propose Israel do. His main worry seems to be “tensions that might arise” between him and the “more hawkish elements in the Jewish community in the United States.”
Mostly though Obama talks about himself, his wonderfulness, his life experiences, his friends. Sure, the interviewer prompts some of it, but Obama goes way too far in personalizing what should rationally be entirely external issues.
Fore example, when asked to talk about the Zionist idea, Obama talks about Obama plus a little bit about the usefulness of Zionism to Obama. Strangely narcissistic – think about it it, if a stranger asked you to discuss Zionism, would it immediately launch you into a “poor me” recitation of details of your childhood?
On the bright side though, he certainly has opened up the door to the discussion of his friends and associates as reflective of his character.

benrand on May 13, 2008 at 6:19 AM
He may not have called Israel a “constant sore”, but it’s clear that he sees Israel as the problem. The idea that Israel needs to ’solve’ the problem means that it’s causing it.
Actually, it does sound like he’s calling Israel a constant sore, now that I think about it. I fail to see what sort of ’solution’ would be palatable to the ‘anti-American militant jihadists’ other than the destruction of the Jewish state. And insofar as the ‘Palestinian’ v. Israeli conflict giving ‘excuse’ to these fanatics, I’d point Senator Obama to the cartoon controversy and the Newsweek lie about flushing the Koran.
These people need very little ‘excuse’ to riot and murder. If he wants to remove anything that might cause offense and give ‘excuse’ to ‘anti-American militant jihadists’, I’d say Israel and America are in serious trouble.
Asher on May 13, 2008 at 7:41 AM
Interesting thread. The free world (mostly America & Israel) have been giving (money, food, medical supplies)to the Palestinians for decades now. Peace agreement after peace agreement after peace agreement… These thugs have one hell of a successful business going on down there; send missiles flying into Israel, and the world gives us everything we need to restock our ever growing business needs. Kill enough Jews, and these idiots will even send an ex-president over here to cut us an even sweeter deal; wow, who needs a college education when such business deals can be had!
Make no mistake about it folks, Israel can’t let Iran go nuclear. Israel will be forced to do the unthinkable and wipe out Iran if this situation continues on it’s current path. This situation is no joking matter, as millions in that region will surely die. All this talk about global warming, saving the planet, going green; well, the damage to our planet will be extreme when Israel is forced to unleash it’s weapons upon Iran. What has the Goracle to say about this carbon foot print a-coming…..
Obama has not the experience nor the courage to face problems of this nature. Obama will do nothing other than to continue to feed this thriving business these thugs have put together. Hamas has declared their backing & support for Obama; no shit, huge pay days lie ahead!

Depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is.
Obama parses around Israel like it is a problem, not a nation. If sound bites mean anything he is careful to place the bites where they sound like Israel is the problem.
In other words, there will be no Hamas – evil sore sound bite. Guaranteed.
imaginary interview:
Q: As for Hamas?
A: No, no, no. But what I think is that this constant wound, that this constant sore, does infect all of our foreign policy. The lack of a resolution to this problem …
The famous buzz word of the anti Zionist is that Israel is the problem, not the war with Israel or the lack of a peaceful solution with Israel, but existence Israel is the problem

All it means is that he’s going to focus on solving the problem, whatever that means, in order to prevent it from infecting our foreign policy. If it’s the most important issue to him, you know what his solution is going to be.
