Sounds comfy until you realize that 13 of Maverick’s 245 come from Virginia, which has been trending blue with Jim Webb and Tim Kaine, is certain to keep trending blue with Mark Warner this fall, and was the site of one of Obama’s most impressive wins, a 64-35 demolition of Her Majesty on February 12 that saw him win by landslides across all ideological groups, including 69-30 among independents. Put Virginia in his column and he leads McCain 234-232. I’m nervous about Missouri too, which Ambinder also gives to Maverick even though Obama surprised Hillary there with one of his few battleground state wins.
Among the states credited to Obama, the only obvious one that McCain might steal is New Hampshire. Otherwise it’s all about Pennsylvania and Ohio as the toss-ups, which means Maverick needs to take a second look at Tom Ridge, pro-choice or not, and Obama needs to take a look at Ted Strickland, especially given the racial undertones to Hillary’s support there (but not just there, perhaps). Assuming Virginia and Ohio break for Obama and New Hampshire and Pennsylvania for McCain, it’s … 257-250 for our guy with Iowa, Wisconsin, New Mexico, and Colorado to decide it. If Pennsylvania breaks for Obama in this scenario instead, he’s at 271 and planning the inauguration.
Exit question: 269-269?

Oh please no 269-269. Clean win either way, otherwise there’ll four more years of whining.

That’s what happens when a party is hijacked and the base is completely ignored while the “candidate” espouses every value, vision, and idea put forth by the opposition.
In other words, why vote for cranky old bastard when there isn’t one iota of difference between his positions and that of Obama. Frankly, Obama comes off as more honest in this case because he doesn’t lie the way cranky old bastard maintains he is a Reagan Republican.

I thought Nebraska could go either way. SurveyUSA had it split a few months ago when they pulled there. Given they aren’t (Especially lately) perfect and it’s just a pull, but it hardly seems right to put it firmly in the McCain camp in my opinion. If it was close once, it could definitely happen again.

Don’t depend on the primary counts to judge the national….McCain was already a “given” by the time he came to Virginia, so I dabbled a bit on the other side…and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one….
Lockstein13 on May 12, 2008 at 8:07 PM
McCain won’t win NC, that’s 15 electoral votes he won’t get. The Democrats here are more for border security than McCain is. And Liddy Dole is in a tie with a popular female Democrat candidate for senate here (who the local media and fox station likes). . . last month Dole was up about 15 points they gleefully reported the new pole showing them tied this evening. Obama will win NC because he’s been here, he’s spent money here, and the Democrats have a strong presence here.
Make yourself feel better by putting NC in the McCain column, but NC voted for Carter and Edwards.
ThackerAgency on May 12, 2008 at 8:07 PM
I don’t know, it could go either way. But I have been struck by the number of Democrats who have told me they will not vote for Obama. But then again, I live in Indiana.
However, I bet there is less difference between Indiana and Ohio and Missouri than some people think.

No! No, no, no, no, no, a million times no. Not “our guy”. The fact that Ambinder’s map has McCain winning is good, but McShamnesty is not “our guy”. You know better.
BTW, McCain definitely won’t take NH, unless conditions in Iraq get a little better and the media decides to stop reporting on it. NH seems to be very anti-war. I’m also putting VA in Obama’s column, provided his VP pick is moderate enough.

I don’t know of anybody who is overly excited about voting for McCain. I know lots of people who are excited about Obama. Sorry some of us haven’t drunk the kool aide. I’d have happily held my tongue and put on my McCain colored glasses and gone down with the ship if I felt like McCain championed my views. He doesn’t, Obama doesn’t, Hillary doesn’t, so now instead of being a McCain cheerleader, I’m going to call it like I see it.
I’m not a base since McCain has convinced me not to vote so you don’t have to worry about me - I don’t matter since I won’t vote. But there is no bias in my posts.

Even with the greatest “in the tank” job in history by the MSM, it ain’t happening.

No, way. You’re overestimating black turnout and the percentage of blacks in the NC electorate.
If you think John Edwards could win any statewide contest in NC these days, you need your head examined.
McCain spoke at the Charlotte Chamber about two weeks ago. He’s been (and is coming) here too.
Wrong again. Bev Purdue’s liberal stances on immigration enforcement are what’s going to make her lose to Pat in November.
First off….nobody watches the local Fox 10PM news. Anywhere. Not in Charlotte. Not in Raleigh. Not in GBO. Not anywhere. Second off…Dole will win…handily.

I can’t disagree more, especially this year. The best chance Republicans have had to take over the governor’s mansion in Raleigh in years has presented itself in Pat McCrory, mayor of Charlotte, and I think Republicans will turn out in droves to make sure that whiny, shrieky Beverly Perdue doesn’t win. Kay Hagen has a bump from her win in the primary, and fawning media attention (surprise!). Once people begin to pay attention to her policies she’ll lose 54-46.

I support and will vote for McCrory (I actually might even volunteer for his campaign because I’m sick of the corrupt Democrats running this state). Bev Purdue gives me the creeps.
I hope Dole does win, but Kay Hagan is popular. Some people here still see Dole as a carpetbagger. I don’t, I like Dole, I support Dole, I hope she wins.
But McCain is a different story. I’d put money on it that he won’t win this state. Edwards wouldn’t win either, nor would Carter if they ran today. But we have a lot of liberal Yankees moving down here to move the vote more and more liberal every year. Most people living in NC now aren’t from NC. . . and they don’t like Jesse Helms near as much as I do.
ThackerAgency on May 12, 2008 at 8:21 PM
Yeah, but Bush was big on giant farm subsidies, McCain isn’t quite so much for it.
doubleplusundead on May 12, 2008 at 8:21 PM
Things are actually tilting more toward McCain at this point than any other Republican in memory. Wisconsin has been voting more Republican every year. Michigan might be on the table for once (despite people just saying it’s been in play). Missouri is the ultimate bell-weather state and it’s more Rep now than during any other election. Same with Indiana. Even Minnesota is trending Rep. And Florida is now solidly Rep.
Countering that are Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, New Hampshire trending Dem.
Between those two trends, I’d easily more rather be in the Republicans’ shoes.
Nessuno on May 12, 2008 at 8:22 PM
Beat ya to it.
Thank you. I didn’t exactly like him as my mayor, but McCrory is our best chance of taking Raleigh in years. Plus, it will be nice to get Charlotte some road money for once. And Hagen will flame out. Just like Obama.

Thacker:
Suit yourself. But someone is drinking something out there.
I do not remember anyone making a big deal out of illegal immigration in any previous presidential election, including 2000 and 2004 and then after years of ignoring the problem, people went nuts and got crazy because Jorge and Juan did not wave a magic wand and reverse decades of bad border policy.
The hardliners made a big deal out of it in 2006, swearing it would help them win and they got their asses handed to them. In spite of threats, tantrums, namecalling, and all sorts of acting out the issue has not won them one single election.
And now they sit back and accuse a man like McCain who spent years in a POW camp of everything from treason to God knows what else because he supported immigration reform.
Considering the alternative, that is ridiculous. But hey, do what you want, free country. For now.

Virginia will not go into Obama’s column. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the only reason Dems have had statewide wins in Virginia is because the GOP there fields lousy candidates, because George Allen couldn’t shut his face, and because Democrats in Virginia typically get the endorsement of the NRA.
Southside Virginians are very conservative, but their families have historically been Democrats and are often inclined to vote for Dems that promise to keep their hands off their firearms, no matter how liberal that Dem is otherwise. Take a look at Rick Boucher from the 9th District. The man is a liberal who continually gets re-elected by one of the most conservative electorates in the entire country because he always gets endorsed by the NRA and because he always votes with the coal lobby. Tidewater has a huge military population and can also be swung to a Dem candidate endorsed by the NRA.
Fact is, with a few exceptions (Wilder and Kaine) the NRA endorsement is a huge deal in Virginia, including in some races in Northern Virginia (see last fall’s Petersen-Davis state senate race). Unless Liberal Jesus can get the NRA to support him, no way he wins VA.

McCain’s years as a POW should give people pause before they doubt his patriotism or his integrity. The fact that he disagrees with you does not make him a Democrat. Are you like the Law Giver to Republicans or something?
McCain is pro life, strong on national defense, as a long and well substantiated history supporting conservative judges all the way back to Bork and he is a fical conservative.
The idea that any of us will agree with everything some candidate supports is naive. I don’t expect someone to be a carbon copy of me before I can support him. I want him to be better than the other guy.
And those 4,000 dead Americans who lost their lives in Iraq deserve better than to see the cause they died for abandoned. That is just how I feel.

It is apathy and disgusting that you keep telling people to shut the f**k up and support McCain simply because he is a Republican. I want a Republican with conservative values not a liberal Democrat who lies about his political affiliation. Perhaps it is time people like you start showing some tolerance and understand that a President McCain will never be trusted by the base constituency of the party. The best cranky old bastard can do is reach an uneasy truce with his own party’s faithful. Perhaps you should start figuring out the way to make that happen instead of calling others names!

And btw, the conservatism is an ideology. The Republican party is a political party. There is a difference. Conservatives are not a majority in the country, even among Republicans they are not a strong majority. A lot of Republicans, GOP people who vote and give money to elections consider themselves moderates. If conservatives want to run the show, they need to gain support…not alienate people. Is that true? Each state gets one vote. Does this guarantee victory for Obama? The slimmest of majorities, 26 states, currently holds for Democrats, not quite the landslide that the raw number of Congressfolks indicates. Twenty-one states have Republican majorities, and the remaining states are McCain’s Arizona, conservative Kansas, and conservative Mississippi (2 Democrats, 1 Republican, 1 vacant). All it takes is a few defections (Blue Dogs), deaths, resignations, and/or replacements and McCain squeaks through as the moderate candidate. If Obama keeps looking too weak, or if McCain wins the popular vote, it could easily happen.

As for the border, there are more resources on that border now than there ever have been in history. And while more needs to be done, crossings are down now from a couple of years. Or so said the reporter on Fox this evening.
However, Obama’s policies on immigration are a lot further to the left than McCain’s and the idea that McCain is just going to open the border is nuts.Whatever you might think of McCain on this issue, Obama would not be an improvement.

If all else fails, four years of Carter II (Obama) will get them back on the “right” (see what I did there? yay, I makes a pun!) track.

I think that has to do with the fact that the Democrats are getting all the attention right now on a national level. But when you look at the campaign state to state, the results might well be different.
6 months is a long time in politics, anything can happen.

Terry, My humblest apologies….I mean I only live 20 miles from the Tijuana border so I have NO idea what goes on there…including the virtually daily van rollovers of human smugglers killing and causing horrible injury to those they’ve been smuggling. Not to mention the 67 people locked in a semi-trailer three days ago dehydrated by the heat in the middle of the day. Oh yeah, include the fact that I’m a nurse at a local hospital so I CARE FOR those smuggled illegal aliens after those accidents! I treated some of those dehydrated illegals in my hospital requiring IV’s that will be paid for by my own tax dollars! But I have NO idea what happens on the borders!!! So Sorry!
McCain is a RINO…Republican IN NAME ONLY! I believe it and he will NEVER get my vote!
Yeah, my humblest apologies for having my eyes open!

We can hope that is the case, but sometimes luck has a lot to do with it.
Bush has had a lot of bad luck. Just strange things happening. If Obama wins and by some strange luck, things just sort of turn quiet for him..then he might not be hurt so badly.

Oh please. Look at California, it has the largest population of illegals in the entire country and is right on the damn border and always votes moderate to left on immigration issues and no doubt those folks would tell me the same thing.
Terrye on May 12, 2008 at 9:10 PM
McCain is bad on immigration, but Obama takes “open borders” literally. He actually wants to physically open the borders.

As for veep, the Senate has no more Democratic-majority states than the Republicans. And it might come down to former rivals Lieberman and Cheney to break any Senate ties.
calbear on May 12, 2008 at 9:12 PM
If all the socalled RINOs just left the party and stopped voting Republican, the party would not even have a chance in winning a national election.
Terrye on May 12, 2008 at 9:12 PM
I wonder who the Republicans will blame when McCain loses in November? Probably all of us Conservatives who won’t bother supporting the McNut on his Global Warming McAmnesty bull.
Snake307 on May 12, 2008 at 9:12 PM
Hey, I wouldn’t mind losing the hardcore RINOS like Linc Chafee (who, thank God, is already gone) and Pataki…but at this point the “moderate” RINOS like McCain and Grahmnesty will have to be dealt with in house while we try to rebuild the party.
malan89 on May 12, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Can’t argue with that. My personal favorite “anything can happen” is that both the major candidates are abducted by Klingons.
MB4 on May 12, 2008 at 9:19 PM
Terry, maybe that’s what the republican party needs in order to come back to the conservative principles that used to win them elections.
I dont disagree that most of California has voted on the left for quite some time. Doesn’t mean I like it though.
Malan, sure Obama truly wants open borders! Why else would I be so worried about the life my daughters will end up leading no matter who wins!
Vntnrse on May 12, 2008 at 9:20 PM
Chafee was pretty lame.
But I have to say, most of the Republicans I know like Lindsay Graham just fine. People vote for these guys, they did not steal their seats.
In fact I read that someone was going to run against Graham and then it came out that the guy was associated with the Klan or something. I mean really, if that is the best his opponents can do then why blame him for getting reelected?
