History re-written: Obama never said he would meet personally with Iran without precondition, says advisor; Update: Website excerpt added

LGF nails them to the wall, but the Times’s complicity in this whitewash is actually even worse than Charles suggests. From today’s story:

Susan E. Rice, a former State Department and National Security Council official who is a foreign policy adviser to the Democratic candidate, said that “for political purposes, Senator Obama’s opponents on the right have distorted and reframed” his views. Mr. McCain and his surrogates have repeatedly stated that Mr. Obama would be willing to meet “unconditionally” with Mr. Ahmadinejad. But Dr. Rice said that this was not the case for Iran or any other so-called “rogue” state. Mr. Obama believes “that engagement at the presidential level, at the appropriate time and with the appropriate preparation, can be used to leverage the change we need,” Dr. Rice said. “But nobody said he would initiate contacts at the presidential level; that requires due preparation and advance work.”

Not only did the Prince of Peace say at the YouTube debate last July that he’d meet personally and without precondition with Iran, he reaffirmed that position in November in an interview with — ta da — the New York Times, a fact, incredibly, that’s omitted from today’s article. Memory lane:

Senator Barack Obama said he would “engage in aggressive personal diplomacy” with Iran if elected president, and would offer economic inducements and a possible promise not to seek “regime change” if Iran stopped meddling in Iraq and cooperated on terrorism and nuclear issues…

Making clear that he planned to talk to Iran without preconditions, Mr. Obama emphasized further that “changes in behavior” by Iran could possibly be rewarded with membership in the World Trade Organization, other economic benefits and security guarantees…

Mr. Obama’s willingness to conduct talks at the highest level with Iran … differs significantly from the Bush administration.

Here’s the video from the debate, but I encourage you to read the transcript — again, ironically, at the Times’s own site — of what Hillary and Silky said in response, just in case Team Barry tries spinning this. Everyone in the building, his opponents first and foremost, understood him to mean that he was willing to chat with Ahmadinejad et al. in person and without demands and His Holiness conspicuously failed to correct that impression. He’s tacking towards the center now that the nomination’s locked up by trying to sound a bit more hawkish and the media’s naturally happy to let him do it by not reminding him of old promises. Lots, lots, lots more to come in this vein over the next few months.

Good research everyone! The sad part is is that we still don’t know where he truly stands.

Obama rarely takes a defininte position on anything. He relies on his Staffers to use the smoke & mirrors approach.
When he appears to take a stand he is stradling the line.

His close association with the Weather Underground types and his membership in a clearly racist church as well as his voting record in public office make him absolutely unacceptable and unfit to lead this nation.

Oh and 57 States? Nope. If the folks in Illinois like him, let him go back there and run for Governor.

59 states actaully. He said he visted 57 states but he didn’t visit alaska and hawaii.

Obama was for 59 states before he was againt 59 states

Somebody should play back the tape of Hillary (during the YouTube debate) saying that a direct presidential visit to Iran without preconditions would be naive and give the Iranians propaganda value.

Obama: One thing.
Obama advisor: Exact opposite.

But Obama never listens to his advisors. Just ask Jeremiah Wright.

You’ll want to save that photo of him…I’m afraid you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use it over the next few years.

I expected no less from a liberal dimacrat. The MSM will cover for him….for now…but they can’t control the ads as we get closer to November. Those ads will show him, in his own words, saying all he has denied saying. (hopefully)

I don’t know why The 3 Stooges, Monty Python and other comedy greats come to mind when I read about politics, but that skit where Larry, Curly and Moe ‘build’ a ‘house’ popped right in there.
No one wants to hear the whole truth all the time, but the lefties have taken distortion and re-framing to an art form–no, it’s a way of life…It gets so boring when the Projection jumps out and screams as you, every time.

Debate: Teleprompter’s fault.
Website: Staff’s fault.

LordDaMan: I count 60. He said he visited 57 states and had one to go and cannot get to Alaska and Hawaii. 57 + 1 + 2 = 60, right?
