Weddings use political capital?

Like so much about the Bush presidency, the wedding of daughter Jenna brings out a strange strain of media bias and bitterness. Take as an example this Associated Press report, which recounts the history of First Family weddings over the course of the last 200+ years, from John Adams’ adninistration to present day. According to Leanne Italie, George Bush would have had a hard time explaining a White House wedding:
Bush’s wedding in tiny Crawford, Texas, on the other hand, is expected to be low-key — out of the view of prying media eyes.
“This is going to be such a different kind of situation,” said Katherine Jellison, an associate professor of history at Ohio University who chronicles the American obsession with marital pomp in her recent book, It’s Our Day.
“Jenna’s father is not running for re-election,” she said. “The frivolity of a big White House wedding in the middle of an unpopular war would have used up what little political capital he has.”
Gee, did it do that for Lyndon Johnson? In 1966, the Vietnam War hadn’t hit the peak of its unpopularity, but political pressure in opposition had certainly hit the mainstream. That didn’t stop Luci Baines Johnson from having her wedding at the White House in an elaborate ceremony, complete with television coverage.
The idea that it takes “political capital” to stage a wedding for a child of the President is patently absurd. Who besides the most extreme lunatics would demand an end to someone’s wedding because their parent didn’t have political capital? Better yet, what credibility would Bush lose on policy after hosting a wedding reception for his daughter at the White House?
Jenna Bush more than likely decided that she didn’t want a big, splashy public wedding, especially after the treatment she and her sister have received from the media over the past few years. Why give reporters like Leanne Italie more grist for their mill? They opted for a quieter setting in Crawford for reasons that become clear after the silliness of this article.
Italie also manages to get in a dig at the Nixons, too:
Tricia Nixon was risque in a sleeveless gown at her Rose Garden wedding.
Risque? Hardly, as the Anchoress points out:
In 1971, this might have been fashion forward, very lovely and “different” (neither hippy-granny dress, nor blowsy meringue) but it was hardly “risque,” especially for a wedding held in a garden instead of a church.
This is what Italie considers “risque”:

If this is what Italie calls “risque”, just imagine how she would have reported the Jenna Bush nuptials.

Thank goodness that even at the end of His second term the Dalai Bama’s daughters will not be of marrying age so that He won’t have to go through such acrimony over matrimony.
(They would, however, be of age by then to be “punished with a baby” – except that we have His word that their Most Holy Father will instill in them the values and morals they will need to make better choices.)
Say ‘Amen,’ then be seated.

I love the way Jenna and her parents have thumbed their noses at the media. By having it at the ranch the media can’t rail at them for using ‘tax payer dollars.’ They can’t say “while the rest of America tries to pay for $4.00 a gallon gas, the wedding of Jenna Bush will use 20X the Co2 used by the average bride.” Notice how little material the media has had to b—h about: They are hoist on their own petard – they can’t draw too much attention to the ranch because then they might have to point out its eco-friendly nature. Don’t want to let the uniformed masses know THAT little secret… I for one would have loved to know more, but don’t blame Jenna one tiny bit for sticking her tongue out at the world.

Damn, can you imagine a Obama wedding at the White House? Reverend Wright doing the GD America KKK ceremony, Sharpton, Jessie Jackson and Farrakhan as wedding guests. Snoop Dog and DMX providing the music and Hamas parking cars.
A good time will be had by all.

You got that right, hun!
Now if we could just run off all those damn people from the “bleu” states that have moved here in droves it would be much nicer. I am getting sick of seeing plates from Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Illinois and Michigan in places where the only reason anyone would have to be there is because they lived there.

“during an unpopular war”
During a popular war, see, you can have all the weddings you want. Hell, you can have parties, keggers, hire strippers, whatever. You know, like WWII, that was popular war, who didn’t like WWII? Very popular war, lots of great movies and songs about that one.
You know who _really_ thought this particular war wasn’t so good? Saddam Hussein. He really hated it.

Pooor CNN and moveon, dems cant get into the Ranch to diss GWB a little bit more. Basically these left wing cretins dont have anything else. Frankly the WAR HAS been unpopular, to the Left and their pals the jihadis. The Maliki Govt seems to be working and we are making a difference in the MiddleEast. THAT is what the left is upset about. That a REPUBLICAN is doing something that the left doesnt have the stones to do. Go ahead Barry Hussein Obama, keep “dialoging” with terrorists, you’ve got good company in the Democratic Party

Funny, Italie doesn’t sound like an Amish name.

Uh, that would include the Bush family, my Lone Star friend. They’re from Maine. W’s grandpa was named “Prescott.” How many real Texans name their boys Prescott, for God’s sake? In my neighborhood we used to pick on kids with sissy names like that. And I’m from Ohio.
I like your gun laws, by the way. I always believed the only truly effective gun control was a steady hand.
