Video: Honey, should we have one child or two? Or 18?

Two sets of twins but the rest were all solo. She’s basically been pregnant nonstop for the past 20 years.
Honestly? My main reaction is that she looks darned young, considering.

Give me a break. These are good people. They’ve gotten publicity because people think their life is interesting and if that helps provide for their family, which is quite difficult I’m sure, then so be it. And, Planned Parenthood playbook? Come on, this family did plan to have a lot of kids. At least they didn’t have them aborted like PP would probably have encouraged them to do.
CP on May 9, 2008 at 9:40 PM
At least they didn’t name them all George.
Rovin on May 9, 2008 at 9:42 PM
Nah, I’m not special. Extremely average in every way.
I don’t question their motivation. I’m betting the network approached them, offered them money, and they took it. I don’t see anything with providing for one’s family in a legal way.

They seem like a happy, well rounded family. The children are well mannered, well dressed and seem well adjusted. It’s no one’s business. I am happy for them.
Glynn on May 9, 2008 at 9:50 PM
Thank you. And thanks to the others on this thread who had not lost their minds. When I played the first video of the mom and dad, what I saw were two happy, content, committed people who have decided that raising good and decent children is all important. I know a whole lot of people who could take lessons from them whether they had one child or 18. God Bless them!
Glynn on May 9, 2008 at 9:55 PM
You guys are all just jealous you aren’t getting as much action as Mr. Duggar.
Seriously, if they aren’t wards of the state (and the Duggars aren’t), be fruitful and multiply. When Mr. and Mrs Duggar are old and grey, they will have 18 grown adults who will take care of them.
I get sick whenever I hear some pro-abortion feminist rail on about what abortion is for to women who have more than PP approved one child policy. Don’t fall into that trap. Do not covet your neighbor’s 18 children.

True, plus, the status-minded yuppie thing is a recent happening. And it ain’t pretty. I saw an example on Fox & Friends not too long ago where one of the blondes (Hopkins, I think) made the comment that children were so expensive to raise that wasn’t the increase in having babies due to wanting status? All those nannies and expensive private schools! She made me want to gag. These people started having children 20 some-odd years ago. I don’t think status was what they had in mind.
Connie on May 9, 2008 at 10:04 PM
There was a family in 18th century England with 19 kids. At least two of them turned out very well. Perhaps you’ve heard of John & Charles Wesley?

I have 10 children and have never found being intimate in the first eight months of pregnancy to be a problem. So, I don’t know why some of you are assuming that having a lot of children would ruin your sex life.
NuclearPhysicist on May 9, 2008 at 10:11 PM
Right on. You know it.
apacalyps on May 9, 2008 at 10:13 PM
The only irresponsible and selfish people out there are those who can’t see true happiness when it is staring them in the face and who criticize those who find it. Big families don’t need the approval or consent of the miserable slobs who hate it when others find something that has eluded them. Three cheers for the Duggar family.
NuclearPhysicist on May 9, 2008 at 10:20 PM
I believe this borders on exploiting the children.
stenwin77 on May 9, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Like, go tell the children that they should not have been born.
We look at these parents as though they are such strange beings in this day and age because they love children and want a large family. Wow,, two people that actually would rather raise and love as many children as they can rather than take expensive vacations, buy lots of expensive stuff for themselves, go to parties and drink beer.
When they are old, they will never be without love or support. I doubt very much they will be tossed away into a nursing home and forgotten.
JellyToast on May 9, 2008 at 10:22 PM
If there were bad things about this family.. the media would have brought it out already. I’ve watched all their specials. These kids are different because they have been taught about Jesus and the parents live it. No wonder some of you can’t stand it.
Good for them. The world needs more of them.
GoodBoy on May 9, 2008 at 10:23 PM
My wife gets extra-horny when she’s pregnant, and from what I’ve read, that’s not uncommon at all.
Mayhaps your creepy hostility towards the Duggars is related to your ignorance of procreation?

Okay, I’ll say it: I’m glad the Duggars are procreating at a much greater rate than you are.

I watched one of the shows about this family some time ago.
One thing is very clear, they are well ORGANIZED ;-)
It showed the older boys helping their Dad while the new
home was being built. Their trips for groceries boggles the
mind…..they buy canned vegetables by the case!!
Same for preparing the meals, they had huge trays of
macaroni & cheese…I mean industrial size.
One thing I can’t remember seeing in their home was TVs.
They do have computers, but these kids don’t waste much
time. Another thing I didn’t see was any brats!! The kids
are very well behaved!!
Obviously, this lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but the Duggars
make it work…..the parents and children seem marvelously
well adjusted.

I gotta agree with the whole a “Vajayjay is not a clown car” idea. In as much as you gotta respect that the man has stuck around and his 18 kids are all with the same momma, there’s just something about a couple that reproduces like their hobby is populating the Earth, when there are so many kids around the world who will not be eating tonight. Seems to me if they love kids so much, they can travel to Africa or Far East asia to pick up a few over there.

The Duggar family is a role model of what families should strive for no matter how big they are. We need more like them.
NuclearPhysicist on May 9, 2008 at 10:50 PM
I’ve not been hostile to them at all. If you think what I’ve said is “hostile”, then, well- welcome to the Internet.
Besides, I’ve had sex with that stork down by the pond dozens of times and it never got pregnant once much less 18 times.
Hollowpoint on May 9, 2008 at 10:52 PM
No, not really- at least not until I’m done here at work.
Just let me know when they get their own syndicated TV reality series and name their 20th kid JJ-Jiraffe.
Hollowpoint on May 9, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Ditto. Where on earth are these nasty, critical comments coming from? These folks seem like wonderful, responsible parents, and I am happy for them. I hope all 18 of their kids have 10 kids each.
Jaibones on May 9, 2008 at 10:56 PM
For two people having their “intimate” time, or lack therof, leched over by the creepily curious…thats an odd way to think about two people who obviously love each other and their family so much that sex is only something to take satisfaction, joy, and comfort from, with no worries about what time of the month it is or if their current method of birth control is gonna work.
This is a simple, united family, they love each other. But cheer up guys, maybe one of the kids will go to the dark side, then you can all sit back and relax, cuz things will be “normal”.
surrounded on May 9, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Worth repeating. Morons.
Bingo.
Jaibones on May 9, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Why don’t you “pick up” some of those foreign children?
Does having more children obligate one to “pick up” African or Asian kids?
How do you know that they don’t give ten times more money to charity than you ever did?
jgapinoy on May 9, 2008 at 11:07 PM
All of the large families I’ve known, including my father with 8 brothers and sisters, have been very functional, happy families. They may struggle with material things, but they make up for it other areas.
As for the Duggers, or any family like them, I think they’re doing a fantastic job of raising and caring for their kids. Others could learn quite a lot from them.
4shoes on May 9, 2008 at 11:11 PM
You mean we WEREN’T supposed to take “be fruitful and multiply” seriously? Darn it all.
Seriously, the Duggars have 18 kids to take care of and they appear to be doing an exemplary job of it. You don’t seem to have that many mouths to feed… perhaps YOU can adopt some poor starving child and ask the Duggars for advice on how to care for it.
You’re right: a vajayjay isn’t a clown car. Too bad the only people who find that crass aspersion funny also think it amusing when an unborn life gets snuffed out of existence.
After all, the only alternative to birth is abortion. Envy of other’s lot in life is the beginning of the road to liberalism, class warfare, and eveyr other staple of Marxist-socialist tyranny and jealousy.
I hope the Duggars have two more kids just to spite anyone who thinks they’ve done enough reproducing. Heaven knows Europe and the US aren’t even above replacement rate without immigrants. By my count, that makes the Duggars smarter than the rest of our nation, which would die as we know it if people who think the Duggars are doing something sick or wrong ever got their way.

I can’t help but find these people very very odd. Worse, in their situation, it seems she’ll spend her ENTIRE life pregnant until she is literally unable to have anymore, as that’s what her religion tells her.
It just seems weird to me that she’s having kids nonstop because she thinks it’s God’s plan for her or something.

Unfortunately, some disgraceful people aren’t joking about it. Like the local paid feminist shill at our “Women’s Resource Center” at my alma mater.

I checked Wikipedia and they follow a belief that says you’re not supposed to use ANY contreptive method at all, because you believe that God is in control or how many kids you have (God blesses you with the children, and it’s apparently up to him how many times you get blessed).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiverfull
THAT is what I find weird. Maybe I’m wrong, but from reading that she will probably only stop having kids when she is no longer capable of having any.
Actually, the more I read this article and the links, the scarier it all sounds, like this….
According to journalist Kathryn Joyce,

TheBlueSite on May 10, 2008 at 12:06 AM
Lotsa anger based in self-righteousness, eh BKennedy? I was just making a point, but from your posts, it seems like offering an opinion into this lifestyle, one which differs from your own, is worth attacking over. And we say that the left is filled with self-righteousness???
“You mean we WEREN’T supposed to take “be fruitful and multiply” seriously? Darn it all.”..Hey…You do what you gotta do…my God ain’t necessarily yours.
“You don’t seem to have that many mouths to feed… perhaps YOU can adopt some poor starving child and ask the Duggars for advice on how to care for it.” I don’t. But I also don’t breed like a rabbit.
“You’re right: a vajayjay isn’t a clown car. Too bad the only people who find that crass aspersion funny also think it amusing when an unborn life gets snuffed out of existence.” No, I don’t find abortion funny. And I’m amazed how you can see across the time/internet/space continuum to be able to know what my thoughts on abortion are.
“After all, the only alternative to birth is abortion.” No…here’s another alternative…Not keeping your wife preggers for 20 years….Using a condom…there’s another one..The PILL?? Perhaps you have heard of that?
“I hope the Duggars have two more kids just to spite anyone who thinks they’ve done enough reproducing.” God love ‘em. I hope they can keep breeding as long as he wants. But I sure hope that if God forbid something happens to Poppa Duggar Momma Dugger has an MBA in her backpocket…cuz that’s when HER CHOICES affect ALL OF US…
CapitalistPig on May 10, 2008 at 12:23 AM
Like I said above, if they are paying for it themselves, and not doing it on my dime, they can have as many kids as they want. We’ve been talking a third kid, but I am NOT going to be prego if I’m still at my job, and the stress is causing health issues that may keep me from getting pregnant safely until I’m too old.

Technically Bryant is in Rhode Island, but RI is just Massachusetts-lite.
It kind of saddens me we have a Women’s Resource Center on a Business School that has been around since 1863. I know it used to be an All Male (All White) school, but do we have to overcompensate by paying some crazy old bat to feed women information enabling and encouraging poor decision making?
Trouble is all of that stuff is actually true. We are losing American culture becauase we’re letting vision-devoid day laborers from Mexico in en masse, then pretend there isn’t a problem when the lazy entitlement-driven swine are outreproducing us 2 to 1.
Before anyone accuses me of xenophobia: My fears about the lawless swine that is the Mexican citizenry is completely rational. To have a phobia requires an irrational fear.
Mexico has access to two oceans, oil, and a labor force willing to work for peanuts. Yet they can’t manage to make their own drinking water safe, they are replete with crime and political corruption, and their answer to their problems is to suck the life out of their neighbor to the north until our country is just as much of a corrupt rancid hole as their country. They have been afforded nearly every benefit America has, and yet they have never done anything to improve themselves. I think we could still take their entire army with a bunch of angry shotgun-weilding farmers and ranchers.
Mexico is the Paris Hilton of the Western world: They get handed everything they could ever possibly need for prosperity from good fortune, and they waste all of it on being stupid, immoral, childish vagrants.

Which is why, had you read what I actually posted, you would have noticed I said Mexico, not Mexicans.
The fact remains, however, that Mexico hasn’t even got clean drinking water down. It is sitting on loads of oil. It’s people are supposedly hard-working. And yet it is still a dysfunctional hole whose leaders are hell-bent on making America pay for their welfare state. Not that Bush and McAmnesty aren’t happy enablers to those thugs.
When I see Mexico, all I see is wasted potential.

Agreed: Mexico, the land of beautiful beaches, tropical climate, oil aplenty, & wasted potential.
jgapinoy on May 10, 2008 at 1:09 AM
In case it wasn’t clear, the context of my “lawless swine” was pointed directly at illegal aliens who are proud to shout out how wonderful it is they are Mexican first. They come in here with no drive to do anything but speak gutter Spanish, subvert decent wages, and use up our social services. Granted the only reason they can do any of that is because we have so many quisling enablers, but I’d like to stamp them out of existence too. No sanctuary cities, no under the table illegal day laborers, and no making excuses for employers who don’t make even the slightest effort to check the citizenship status of their employees.
When you allow illegals to overrun your services and get benefits for crossing the border illegally, what you are doing is slapping your relatives who came here legally in the face. You are saying they should have just shipped themselves over with a coyote instead of waiting in line.
Anyone who wants to come to America, learn English, and be a productive member of society is welcomed with open arms. If someone doesn’t want to take those minimal steps to assimilate, they should fix thier own country instead of bringing dysfunction to ours.
BKennedy on May 10, 2008 at 1:11 AM
No, you did say Mexicans. You said “the swine that is the Mexican citizenry”
Mr. Kennedy, I wonder, since you speak so intelligently of Mexico, how many times have you actually been there?
Mexico is a mostly beautiful country of which you apparently have little to no knowledge, and frankly, you put your ignorance on display when you write such asinine drivel. The socioeconomic reasons as to why generally POOR Mexicans (or Swine, in your own words) come here are too long to be delineated here. The fact remains that as long as there is a draw and incentive to being here illegally, they will keep coming. DO not blame Poor Mexicans for Tyson Foods, Pilgrims Pride, and a dozen more American companies and many hundreds of American EXECUTIVES that keep hiring illegal aliens.
And, before you brand me a Mexican nationalist, Separatist, or whatever, you should know that I have voted GOP as long as Ive been 18, and I do not identify with poverty pimps like La Raza and LULAC. You will find that the majority of us “swine”, the ones that arrived here legally, are very anti illegal immigration.
And, yes, there is running water down there. And just last year Mexico was shipped indoor plumbing….jeez

It’s interesting how you used sarcastic humor but dont realize that he was doing the same thing to make an important point. And that being that abortion today is normal and acceptable while others consider this irregularly large family creepy, weird and odd.
I’m never impressed with statements like, “Well in today’s society things are different.” They are correct of course but only because the mindset has recently turned to self-worshipping narcissism.
Large families were once considered by the majority to be a blessing regardless of whether you were a Christian or not. A large family meant more hands to do work for the family and in turn meant more income. But in our age (the last seventy years) or in more developed nations, people can come up with a large number of reasons why not to have children at all. I’m to busy. I wouldn’t have time to provide for them. My life’s ambitions will be delayed.
The sad truth is that childless families are missing out from many true blessings from God that can only be found in raising children.

Re: Quiverfull
If you look closely, there’s no reference to support their membership in the quiverfull movement – informal or otherwise. That makes me suspect. There are reference articles (#2 at wiki), that say she used the pill after the birth of their first child, but later had a miscarriage they believe was caused by the pill. Being pro-life, they stopped and said they would have as many children as God would let them.
You have to be careful about what you read in Wikipedia, especially about ANYTHING that might be labeled Conservative, or Christian, or both. In addition to that statement, there were two more that have been removed. A statement about her “sex addiction” (no references) and the fact they were skirting US tax law by following the advice of a money management seminar (reference – #2 linked above) only stated he attended a seminar years before. No mention of who gave it or the subject matter was discussed in the article.
Don’t believe everything Wikipedia tells you just because it’s there. Check all the references, especially if it is related to something negative or eccentric. If there is NO reference backing up the assertion (and that’s all it is), the assume it’s a LIE, because that’s probably what it is.
JeffWeimer on May 10, 2008 at 8:57 AM
Wiki’s bias against anything conservative is so pervasive that an alternative had to be invented. Hence, http://www.conservapedia.com

Also, since you’re great fans of the old Testament. How about the verses in Leviticus (chapter 12) that says that after a woman gives birth, she is unclean for 2 weeks -just like when she menstuates. And she must not go anywhere for 66 days – so she can be PURIFIED.
… CRICKETS CHIRPING,….
So why aren’t you quoting those verses?

Thank you!
Used to know a couple just like the Duggars: Christian, very happy and well adjusted, planned every single one of their 12 children. When she’d had her sixth she was resting in her hospital bed when her husband came in with flowers, kissed her and said, “Well, honey, there’s our first half-dozen.” She smiled.
They now have twelve happy, successful, children, most of them grown with families of their own. LOVE stories like the Duggars’.

Please. The surest way to lose any argument is to start quoting scripture from the Bible, which is more contradictory than US Tax law. (Yes, I am ready to be quoted and flamed for that). Be that as it may, you can interpret the Bible to satisfy just about anything. These people have just interpreted it to mean that they can populate to their hearts content. The people in Eldorado interpreted the Bible their way. Just about any whackjob has interpreted the Bible to fit their predisposed view of what “God’s word should be”. Why should the Duggars be elevated as some sort of pinnacle to self-sacrifice? In that line of logic, Muslim suicide bombers are also following the word of God, no?

Thanks for the link to Trutherpedia, that was hilarious.

Clearly you have a supererior sense of morality. So how many of those kids, that you care SO much about, have you adopted?

I love this family. They are very normal Americans, there are just lots of them! They don’t deprive themelves or their children of modern conveniences, food, or culture. They are not members of a cult. The parents obviously love each other very much, and the kids are happy and well behaved.
What’s not to like?

If I told you, I would embarass you. So, I won’t tell you.

Did anyone catch the spot in the video where Daddy Duggar wants to show the pregnancy test to the camera?
Now that’s a bit strange.

I blame the internet

It’s odd much more animus there seems to be against the Duggars than against polygamists who have as many children, but via different wives.
Laura on May 10, 2008 at 4:02 PM
It’s the happiness factor. The Duggars are happy with their unconventional (by modern standards) choices. It bugs them.

Not knowing anything about Michelle Duggar, but my wife genuinely enjoys being pregnant. To her it’s not a burden at all. Some women are like that.
I for one take a certain amount of inspiration from the Duggars, in that they have a close and loving family. Good for them!

Well, somebody has to make up for the loss of children Planned Parenthood has stolen from America.

To the detractors: Which of the children should not exist?

I would much rather see a family like this with 18 kids than 9 families on welfare with two kids each.
Rose on May 10, 2008 at 7:45 PM
To you: What is the inherent goodness in any of them existing at all?
Viscount_Bolingbroke on May 10, 2008 at 7:51 PM
That’s a really strange question. What’s the inherent goodness in YOU being here, or any of us, for that matter? Is there some # of kids/family ratio that has to be applied in order for the child’s existence to be considered good?
Laura on May 10, 2008 at 8:16 PM
Just asking a question which needs answering if the argument of the innate goodness of children’s lives is to be used.
Viscount_Bolingbroke on May 10, 2008 at 8:24 PM
Good for you then. I retract my snarc in your case. It is a free country though and if they want to have a hundred kids it’s alright by me as long as they are as awesome as those kids are.

Their car had a Bush-Cheney sticker on it. They’re fine with me.
