Video: Mark Steyn vs. the “sock puppets”

The “sock puppets” being the three Canadian Muslim law students whom he says are acting as spokespersons for Mohammed el-Masry, the complainant in the Star Chamber case against him and a noted proponent of killing Israeli civilians. He’s also been known to accuse the media of being controlled by “the zhoos,” according to Ezra Levant, which should indicate how abiding his respect for “human rights” is. The clip’s in three segments: First Steyn alone, then the Puppets, then in the last third the long-awaited confrontation between the two, in which the Puppets clarify their position. It’s not that they’re fascists bent on silencing Steyn’s criticism of Islam; it’s that they’re socialists, evidently, insofar as they think Maclean’s magazine owes them a right of reply to his commentary in its pages under penalty of law. It’s the Fairness Doctrine, in other words, aimed a la the American version at confiscating private property to promote a viewpoint with which the property owner doesn’t himself agree. Notice how the clip is titled “What is Wrong with Mark Steyn’s View of the World?” As if that’s the issue.
If that’s going to be their take the least they could do is insert a shot of the Wizard of Oz bellowing, “Pay no attention to those jack booted Islamofascist thought police hiding behind the curtain!”

Video quality sucks! Buffering every second, when I have a broadband connection with 4 megabit throughput and the flash allowed to have an unlimited cache…THAT’S the defective quality of the video, not my PC, not the Internet, not even Al Gore.

It was breaking up for me, too.
I like a ton of things about Steyn. He’s bright, he’s right, and he’s funny, but somewhere down the list after all those important things is that he not a suit guy. There are some men who look better in a suit than everyday clothes, and they will always disappoint. The guys who wear suit because..hey, ya have to, but look better in everyday clothes, are my kind of guys. You can tell that Steyn wears a suit because he is pretending to take the situation seriously. In reality, he slides into his jeans and t-shirt and laughs at em.

I started watching this about 2 hours ago and just finished (video buffering sucks). The three “complaintants” were rather myopic when it came to the head to head. Their laughable assertion that, because some wackos wrote nasty things in a comment section of a website, Steyn had stoked hatred and contempt with his writings was, er, laughed at, by the Highlander. The best part was when Steyn, on air, forced the debate these nillys had cried for for so long but didn’t seem all that eager to engage in.
Side note: Do they ever answer the question of why it is ok for the Muslims that Steyn quotes to say the things they do, but not ok for Steyn to quote them? The video was too choppy for me to comprehhend that part of the discussion, and I wasn’t about to sit through it again.

I have to agree with the many previous posters . . . the video sucks. My broadband download speed is ~15MB and I played it on both Visa and Mac OS 10. The video stops/starts/stutters and the audio is very broken.

It’s amazing that Steyn got a sympathetic Canadian journalist on public broadcasting. And I think the whole thing served Steyn well, though he probably should have controlled his outbursts more. It’s clear these 3 individuals get under his skin.

I don’t know how controlled I would have been. Did you see the part where the not so good looking girl was making stuff up about what Mark had written, got called on it, and said “They’re almost quotes.” (Steyn can be heard off-screen scoffing “Almost?”)
Sometimes you just got to draw attention to a glaring problem.

Amen. Whatever the normal leanings of this network, or even this show, the moderator was excellent in keeping things under control (and yes, Steyn could have comported himself a bit better) and calling BS when necessary.

I, too, had to turn it off. They are going to take over the West by breeding alone. It is happening in Europe and it may happen here unless people wake up. It is not just al Qaeda we need to worry about. Islam is a male dominanted religious society functioning as the law of the land. The fanatics tolerate little but strict obedience to Sharia. Assimilation really seems minimal in any country they choose to inhabit which would make the assertion that their intent is to to take over the world all the more real. The takeover will be bloody unless we quietly submit and convert. We will eventually live in a police state without any liberty.

In fact, he looked pretty frustrated for a lot of the video.

Well that was interesting.
Notice how their claim went from “we just want equal time” to “this is hate speech”. It reminded me of the “What, we’re just asking questions?” tactic used by the troothers.
Pay attention to the back and forth regarding “significant figures” and also “hate speech comments on a blog”.
That really was their position? Rough comments on a “blog”?
Holy crap! By that standard they better block Dailykos and Huffington Post from getting in to Canada, no?

Those young people on the show are really dumb, I doubt they would be able to make it as lawyers. Probably end up with some bureaucratic job, squelching free speech and all that.

They complained to the Human Rights Commission that McClain’s magazine publishes Mark Steyn but wont publish them. The HRC tells them to go pound sand because they have no jurisdiction to tell McClain’s what it can publish.

pound their sandstomp their feet in newspapers all over Canada, and on the intertubes, that they can’t get their voices heard in McClain’s.They believe that, if “freedom of the press” means that any particular “press” has the right to be free, a kind of, oh say, “equal time” should be imposed.
Why, these people are Democrats.

Mark Steyn is on point like a fax machine here ladies and gentlemen.
He calls all three of them out for being too chicken to debate him. Then they have no choice.
My favorite part was when he pledged solidarity with the three Muslims in seeking litigation against the Norway imam who said “Muslims are breeding like mosquitoes”. Brilliant!
Very refreshing to see someone who is not afraid to defend himself! I’m so sick of pansy Newt’s boring interviews virtually every day for the last two weeks.

I finally got to see the whole thing too. That one lawyer was pretty hot. That’s the only thing they had going for them though.
Their complaint was that the article would foment hatred and is hate speech. I’d love to see the same criteria placed on the Koran. It calls for the hatred of Jews and Christians. It calls Jews and Christians apes and pigs. If there ever were a written document full of things that incite hatred, look no further than the Koran which is used to justify killing of innocent people around the world on a daily basis.
The problem is that these Muslims are going to use the law because they can. Anyone can sue anyone. These three are lawyers and they don’t have anything else to do. The fact that they said he can’t quote someone as evidence supporting his case or it is hate speech indicates that they are not very good at actually making arguments that work.

It’s amazing how these muslim idiots claim they’ve never heard of these prominent muslims overseas in islamic nations that are in the news, almost every day. It’s amazing that they can sit there, and with straight faces (probably because they’re bloodsuckers from the legal field) accuse Mark of being a “hatemonger” for exposing statements issued by practitioners of islam, and basically say it’s perfectly acceptable for him to be brought before some stupid Human rights commission. However, they can say that Adolph Hitler was a Christian, and get away with it, no litigation involved. Simply pathetic, and more reason for me to dislike Canada, muslims, ambulance-chasers and activists from the legal field.

That was horrible video with engrossing content. I loved the spontaneous debate and the free back and forth. However,
I cant stand these muj-lite aristocratic Marxists. Mohamed Vin-Diesel in the middle needs to be bitchslapped in the worst way. Gloria Allred-Bin_Laden on the left wasn’t bad but I gotta say, the one on the right was cute and could use some serious white redneck anglo lovin!
