“Everybody keeps saying, ‘Well, he sat there for 20 years.’ For starters, he didn’t sit there for 20 years, right? He’s been a member for 20 years. He’s not sat there for 20 years. For three years, he was in law school. Another eight years, he was in the state senate, and another three years–or three years, really now four–he’s been in the US senate. I don’t mean to split hairs on this, but it hasn’t been 20 years.
And furthermore, truth be told, there are some things that Pastor Wright has said that are absolutely true.”

Thought that link was going to go to excitable Andy from the quote there.

I haven’t sat there for 20 seconds, but I understood the implications in less than one second.
winemkr on May 7, 2008 at 11:10 PM
Can you get more specific? Would you be willing to repeat those words and put them as being your beliefs on the record?
ninjapirate on May 7, 2008 at 11:11 PM
PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT MAN BEHIND THE PULPIT.

And as well all know, it’s impossible to go to church while being in the state Senate or law school
amerpundit on May 7, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Everyone knows you can’t go to church while in law school or in the state senate.
jgapinoy on May 7, 2008 at 11:12 PM
Yes, I believe that when Pastor Wright told inquiring new members of his congregation where the collection plates were his answer was absolutely true.

I did appreciate what he had to say about Pres. Bush though.

Do liberal have Red Herring farms on their land?
How does this work?
I didn’t use drugs for 20 years, I took a nap every afternoon.
EJDolbow on May 7, 2008 at 11:20 PM
Yet he was there long enough to take a quote from one of “Reverend” White’s sermons as the title of his book.
The Prophet Barack should not have needed 20 years to see Wright for what he is: a racist loon.
irishspy on May 7, 2008 at 11:22 PM
Schnapsed, and sad.
Entelechy on May 7, 2008 at 11:23 PM
I tried to read it, but I had to quit after a few paragraphs. It is obvious that this man supports Obama because they are both Black. It isn’t racist to say so. Blacks supporting Blacks isn’t racist, and pointing that out isn’t either. If Wright were a White preacher do you think this man would “contextualize” his hate speech? If Obama were a White freshman Senator from a distant state, would he get this support?
We are in for a wild ride this election. We may come out of it with the birth of two new parties and the death of the two old ones.
Buford Gooch on May 7, 2008 at 11:23 PM
If an Obama Presidency were to occur, excuses wouldn’t work for him then either.
Speakup on May 7, 2008 at 11:23 PM
4 years in the Senate, of which 2+ have been squandered running for president. How does this serve his constituents?
Entelechy on May 7, 2008 at 11:25 PM
David Duke is counting up the meetings he’s attended this very minute. What’s the over-under, Rev?
Dusty on May 7, 2008 at 11:26 PM
I agree with you.
1. I couldn’t care less that blacks support Obama based off of race. He’s their first good shot at a black presidency. They have a right to and we shouldn’t get all pissy about it. Obama needs to be beat on policy and philosophy pundit pissiness is counter productive.
2. If Wright was white and McCain’s preacher for 20 years he would be saying something different.
ninjapirate on May 7, 2008 at 11:30 PM
doesnt matter how long he sat there.
you KNOW what the guy says. holy crap
all this talk of community and church and hope and people…
and no word goes through the grapevine about what uncle Wright says?

heh
funky chicken on May 7, 2008 at 11:31 PM
OT….
Dale Hansen (local ABC Dallas TV-WFAA sportscaster) just said in the broadcast “if race horses had ankles like Hillary they wouldn’t break their legs”.
Sorry to go OT (again) but what the hell. It’s a quote-of-the-day.
Limerick on May 7, 2008 at 11:33 PM
Of course it is, by definition.
If someone supports or rejects someone else with skin color/race as a factor, it is racist. What is so difficult to see about that?
jgapinoy on May 7, 2008 at 11:34 PM
BO has no accomplishment of any sort that should catapult him to the most powerful office in history.
The only qualification that attracted millions of his supporters is his skin color.
Some will accuse me of racism for pointing this out. But it is many of his followers who are racist for supporting someone because he is Black.
I am not supporting McCain because he is White, but because he is infinitely more qualified than BO.
jgapinoy on May 7, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Wow! Very perceptive! Yet you endorse the guy that holds every position that destroys the family? Moron.

Really?
He seemed quite eager to distance himself from him. However, he did defend him at some points.

/White guilt
SouthernGent on May 7, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Yes ma’am. I have no qualms with people disagreeing over policy. In fact, I believe, while conservative thought is almost always the better application, that debate is in general healthy. But I think the inability to see the humanity in the people we disagree with lamentable and growing increasingly common. At least this fellow gives good testament to the President’s intentions and faith.
Spirit of 1776 on May 7, 2008 at 11:56 PM
I would have bet serious money that was a Rosie O’Donnell quote.
Go figure.
Professor Blather on May 7, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Amazing how the same quote has the guy saying that he wasn’t REALLY there for that amount of time. He goes into great detail about how it would be impossible for him to go to a church for 20 years (marry him, baptize kids, inspire book). But at the end of it it’s almost like the catch-all that well, ‘it doesn’t matter anyway because Wright was right about most of the stuff’.
The point is - and I believe this is why it is the quote of the day - If you think Wright was right so it doesn’t matter, why go into the detail of whether or not he was actually there ‘for 20 years’? You can’t logically have it both ways. Either he shouldn’t have been there - so he wasn’t. Or he was OK being there - so it doesn’t mean anything to say that he wasn’t actually ‘there’ for 20 years.
Arguing against this kind of logic makes you wonder if they should change no child left behind to no adult left behind and get these people some education in logic.

wise_man on May 8, 2008 at 12:05 AM
Ok. I am officially tired of everyone having an opinion which is internally inconsistent. It is racism whether you are acting FOR OR AGAINST a person BASED ON RACE. Race-based criteria is simply wrong. So is sex-based for that matter.
HawaiiLwyr on May 8, 2008 at 12:12 AM
BO is not black, sorry to inform you. He is less than 1/8th black actually. Not black enough to qualify for affirmative action preference under US rules.
BHO is 1/2 Arab, 1/2 White. The Black thing is a Lib and MSM fantasy.
AZCON on May 8, 2008 at 12:16 AM
One of those guys behind the pulpit looked like my dentist. Are some of these guys playing dual roles?
Travis1 on May 8, 2008 at 12:17 AM
Whaddya mean, three years in law school? Each of those “years” only runs from August to May. That’s only eight months, or eight after you subtract that huge break between semesters. Even when school was in session, I can’t imagine he was in class more than 20 hours a week. Multiply that by 20 weeks per semester times six semesters, and we’re talking 2400 hours, or 100 days in law school, tops.

nnnnoooooOOOOOOO! Not another 4/8 years of this!

Will Obama ride on the coattails of ‘entitlement’ all the way to the Oval Office? Maybe. He can’t say that he has earned the right to be President.
If a white first term Senator with no accomplishments decided to run for President, we’d never know his name. Because he wouldn’t garner support in either party.
Obama hasn’t done anything. He doesn’t deserve to be President. Being a hard left Liberal may make the leftists love him, but most of the country is more moderate to center to right. If that weren’t the case, George Bush wouldn’t have won re-election.
Fringe candidates don’t win. Obama can’t win.
Doug on May 8, 2008 at 1:06 AM
So the three years he was in law school, and all the years he has worked jobs, he never went to church? I find that hard to believe. Most of the world is either in school or working some kind of job, and still manage to go to church on Saturday/Sunday.
Trtle2001 on May 8, 2008 at 1:41 AM
Even if Wright said anything that was true, it’s an old tactic for people like him to mix in truth with half-truths, distortions and outright lies just so it can be said that “some of what he said is true.” Obama employs this tactic all the time.
baldilocks on May 8, 2008 at 2:08 AM
Another dupe taken in by Kenneth Lamb.
baldilocks on May 8, 2008 at 2:11 AM
Luos–Obama’s tribal kinsmen–are not Arab. I know because I am half Luo also. Here’s a photo of my father; not exactly an Arab prototype. Stop making yourself look like an Internet nut, AZCON. You seem like a reasonable person otherwise.
baldilocks on May 8, 2008 at 2:16 AM
I’m still waiting to hear what Allah thinks was right in these sermons.
Tom N on May 8, 2008 at 2:17 AM
Indeed. But I think someone who says “there are some things that Pastor Wright has said that are absolutely true” is also a dupe. Sure Wright probably has spoken a factual truth or two. But, pressed to give a Wright truth, this guy claims, “[R]ight after he says that [the damning], the next sentence, which they never play, says, ‘And that’s in the Bible.’” Sorry, but in reports I’ve seen, they generally include “That’s in the Bible.” I’ve heard people justifying and explaining “That’s in the Bible.” It still makes no sense to me, and it’s funny how those who try to explain “in the Bible” never seem to be able to cite where in the Bible God damning America is.
America needs all the help it can get, so I’d rather hear a hopeful “God bless America” than a hateful “God damn America.” Even if you believe America gave various STDs and drugs to oppress the free-will-free underclass, that would only mean that we the people need help and blessings, not fire and brimstone, at least in this lifetime. But that’s just my opinion….
calbear on May 8, 2008 at 2:27 AM
I said:
To which calbear responded:
One does not preclude the other. I was speaking of the “Obama as Arab” crap that some nut made up that is all over the place now, not Wright’s lies or anyone that makes excuses for him.
I’ve been talking about Wright’s distortion of Christianity for a bit also; what does one call lies and truth mixed together? Lies.
baldilocks on May 8, 2008 at 2:36 AM
This is the first election where Obama is being tested in any serious way. He won’t give pressers on the campaign trail, he frequently makes dumb statements (”where am I?” in North Carolina, and don’t forget the tornado in Kansas that killed “20,000 people”) that his aides blame on him being “tired,” and he has demonstrated that he can’t manage his negatives well. (E.g., “I was in church for 20 years and never heard any of that,” or “Bill Ayers was just my neighbor!”)
With any other politician, that kind of political ineptitude would be fatal. Hillary couldn’t survive Tuzla-gate and Bill C.’s Jesse Jackson comment in South Carolina, for example. But since the disillusionment with GWB is so high and the press is so fully enamored of Obama, he’s getting away with it and might capture the Presidency. Very sad, and VERY dangerous for our country.
Outlander on May 8, 2008 at 7:40 AM
Why can’t they just come out and say “I am supporting him because he is black”, that makes more sense then the double-speak, covering up, hands over the ears, nonsense they state trying to convince us they are “objective”, and the decision was a “thoughtful” one.
right2bright on May 8, 2008 at 7:58 AM
Of course it is, it would be like crossing the streams…imagine every atom in your body exploding at the speed of light.
James on May 8, 2008 at 8:02 AM
Agreed, but how exactly can one engage on policy and philosophy when a large percentage of the electorate stopped thinking upon seeing the guy’s skin color?
Quisp on May 8, 2008 at 8:53 AM
Um - I’m sorry but I forget where in the Bible the God spoke about America…cuz America did exist B.C., right?
/snark
KrisinNE on May 8, 2008 at 9:52 AM
Okay, let’s play the game.
3+8+4 = 15. Twenty minus fifteen.
So, Obama’s only been attending the church for five years.
Yeah, that’ll work. Go with it.
SteveMG on May 8, 2008 at 9:59 AM
Obama is as much a White freshman Senator as a Black one…I wonder why he decided to remake himself into a Black Man and then again into an African American and then into a Son of Slaves and Civil Rights era hero….BHO has either some major self identification problems or just an Affirmative Action opportunist or BOTH!
