Video: They must be polar bears in disguise Update: MS-NBC edits video

Update: MS-NBC edited out the penguins. I’m checking to see if I can find another source.

MS-NBC had to go around the world to get its story on global warming yesterday. In fact, they had to substitute the North Pole for the South Pole. At the 45-second mark in this story about the disappearing ice at the top of the world, take a look at the critters they show on an ice floe:

Those, folks, are penguins — which live at the bottom of the earth, as Nigel points out. The “expanses of water that weren’t there before” were actually never there at the North Pole. All 17 species of penguins live in the southern hemisphere.

Why would penguins make the long and rather warm journey across the equator to appear in an MS-NBC story about global warming?

  • Escaping the expanding ice cap at the South Pole
  • Conducting their own investigation into polar-bear migration
  • MS-NBC’s editors don’t know one pole from another

Something got exposed in this broadcast — scientific illiteracy at MS-NBC.

Update: Via Lawhawk, here’s another example of Michelle Kosinski’s expert reporting on climate extremes:

Note the depth of the water, as measured by the ankles of men walking past Kosinski during this flood in New Jersey.

Cool photo.

The most interesting thing I noticed about the video is that these Global Warming Troofers have now brainwashed their 15 yo’s into brainwashing 11 yo’s. It’s all about controlling “Education”.

Did they re-edit this? I can’t see penguins at 11 seconds or 45 seconds.

Yes if land glaciers melt sea levels rise but most of the ice up north is sea ice. Now if the Antarctic ice sheet melts. Climb a tree.

what they forget to add to this “snake oil” sales pitch is the.. 1.3 trillion dollar tax! You know, take your money to cool the climate.

I see no penguins either, but if there were black and white birds in the video before it was altered, Ed,are you certain they weren’t auks? These fowl look a bit like penguins and may be considered their ecological counterparts.

You see that a lot, by the way; two animals from different ecologically similar places looking alike. The African ostrich and the emu from Australia are not very closely related; they just resemble each other due to the similarity of their habitats.

Michelle Kosinski is having yet another bad day in Seacacus, New Jersey.

Better give her a third chance to get these stories right.

I like the bit where she says in case of polar bear attack she’d be more likely to try hugging it than shooting it. I’d buy me a ticket to that show.

Did they re-edit this? I can’t see penguins at 11 seconds or 45 seconds.

rihar on May 6, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Yup. The previous video showed the news anchor introducing the story with a video clip over his shoulder at the 11 second mark. That has been removed and the previous clip at the 45 second mark (now not matching that time) the shot was replaced with a long shot taken from a helicopter. It was a shot of an iceberg with two penguins. SilverStar830 on May 6, 2008 at 4:31 PM linked a copy of the previous video. So msnbc.com’s hastily re-edited clip and replaced it with the same link address on their server.

… cheeky monkeys.

Nevermind. It’s gone now.

My question is, when it turns out that anthropogenic global warming is revealed publicly to be the world’s most successful boondoggle, do those of us who didn’t repent our evil carbon-spewing ways get to be as condescending and snide towards the other side as these jerks are today?

Viewtifulgare on May 6, 2008 at 5:25 PM

a copy of the original video can be found (currently) at http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=90893 penguins at 29-30 seconds…

Everytime something like this is caught somebody should save it right away.

Somebody probably sent them an email calling them idiots and rather than own up to it they got rid of the evidence.

EJDolbow on May 6, 2008 at 6:40 PM

And for the young explorer, I wonder, did she research Peary’s trip to the North Pole? Did she ask, why did Peary leave for the Pole on February 28th to get there by April 6th? Was it so he could get to the Pole and back before the ice started melting? (in 1906) or did he just like the coldest part of the year?

More dishonesty. More “fake but accurate” MSM reporting.

Red Pill on May 6, 2008 at 7:10 PM

I honestly think they should be sued for fraud.

Red Pill on May 6, 2008 at 7:20 PM

They must have been relying on that Imam who said that penguins live on the north pole.

elvis on May 6, 2008 at 7:58 PM

These people, it doesn’t matter how many times you catch them red handed, there is no one in Washington with the guts to call them down. Sad and sickening. But thank you Ed for pointing it out.

Maxx on May 6, 2008 at 8:04 PM

I suspect this wasn’t an attempt at fakery; that she did, in fact, go to the north pole, but that some nitwit edited in some stock footage of ice flows and water that happened to have penguins in it.

*shrug*

Very different than suggesting/suspecting that the entire trip and story took place at the south pole, everyone lied intentionally just to make it look like they were at the north pole instead, and got caught with penguins on film…

*shrug again*

Look, I’m no fan of MSNBC, and firmly believe the global warming thing in general is a large scam - but this specific ‘omg, penguins’ brouhaha seems awfully tinfoil-hattish to me, hehe.

I can’t think why your computer showed you logged in as Oink, but there is a commenter at HA with that nic. Oink posts infrequently, but has quality things to say, so you should definitely not feel insulted.

However, I was asking about your nic, “Viewtifulgare”. It looks like a phonetic spelling of a compliment rendered in a thick accent. I just wondered if it was an endearment from someone in your family.

JetBoy on May 6, 2008 at 9:12 PM

Has anyone mentioned or reference this site before?

http://www.surfacestations.org/

This site records the physical location of weather stations in the U.S. These stations are use to record the temperatures that are then used to support global warming claims.

Two odd things about this.

The first is the position of some stations right next to air conditioning units or other heat producing sources.

The other is the reaction of government agencies when it became public knowledge that this site existed and what it was exposing.

These locations were made public knowledge until then.

They are not longer listed online by a government agency, hence why this site it trying to track all of the stations domestically.

For what it’s worth…

I know I remember a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs helped bring the baby penguin back to the North pole. If Bugs can do it then why not ms-nbc. Oh wait - I think when they got there he found out it was supposed to be the South Pole.

Yes, it was Surface Stations Org that nailed NASA the first time they got caught distorting the temperature record. NASA blamed the whole thing on a Y2K bug of all things. Reference this Hotair post for the old event, and here is the new event, NASA has been caught again playing around with the numbers within the last week.

As in ‘MSNBC’s penguins are coming home to rooooooost’?

Midas on May 7, 2008 at 8:25 AM

Sure the Penguins go to the North Pole to get some sun. It has been too cold down south so they went North for the milder Climate during the so cold Winter months down south. The MSM would never lie to the people. They just caught some vactioning Penguins having some fun.

danfinrud on May 7, 2008 at 10:40 AM

I just want to know what the lead singer from Cheap Trick is doing in that video. Compare 1:15 into the video to 0:40 into THIS video. Anyone seen the two of them together? I think not!

I think the little lady should get together with a producer (not from Hollywood) and distribute the documentary to highschools to show kids how to think objectively and how to discern between facts and propaganda.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about. What we see in the clip is clearly a, hitherto, undiscovered species.

hey… let go of my cheek!

But as an Alaskan, in the frozen North. I get the “Penguin” question more then I care to name, what is better is the Polar Bear question (I am a little far south for Polar Bears). It has gotten to the point where I say to the tourists… “Yep, I saw a Penguin last night… and he was might tasty!” They get the idea and feel foolish for asking.

As for the Polar Bear question… hehehe (I am evil I tell you), I tell them to get on the Glenn Hwy, got north until you get to Fairbanks then take a left at the Fox town exit and Keep going. Should only take 2 hours. BTW the town of Fox is 10 hours south of Prudhoe Bay, if you want to drive fast on the Dawson Hwy (which is mostly hard packed dirt). But some stupid tourist actually listened to me and then came to yell at me the next day when they figured out I was pulling their leg. What fools!

“What Life is Like Growing up in an Intellectual Bubble”

Come on, anyone who’s seen that Coke commercial with the cute baby Polar Bear sliding down a hill and coming to a stop at the feet of a herd of penguins knows that they coexist.

Her father, David, a renowned explorer… what? Only English upper crust types could wear that title without batting an eye. She must have been given a Laura Croft lunch box to take to her prep school and it just got out of control. Sort of like a Trapper Keeper gone all wrong. Give me a break.

She had to leave England to learn how to fire a gun that could save her life since it’s almost impossible, even for the daughter of a world renowned explorer, to ever be able to do that there. But, she figures she would hug the Polar Bear instead. Probably because she thinks they are all like the Coke commercial bears. You know, the ones that don’t eat all the penguins they find lying about on the ice floes.

And what’s the big deal about 40 below? I used to watch Vikings games before the dome when it was 40 below. Suck it up explorer girl. They sure don’t make daughters of world renowned explorer’s like they used to.

Before she left she “didn’t care”? But now that she has experienced the sight of miles and miles of snow and ice, the importance of it all became clear to her. …huh? Then why, or better, who set up the whole documentary idea? Did she not know? Did they threaten to leave her up there holding the flag pole while the rest of the team hiked back to England? Call child protective services!

And for the Grande Finale… she explains that the biggest problem is (hold on to your seats, this is soooo cute…)that her “Bum” can freeze if she can’t drop her fur lined panties fast enough, pee fast enough and pull up her fur fast enough to keep from having icicles form. Well, I kind of paraphrased there, but you get the idea.
