Video: “The Dark Knight,” trailer two

I’m giving you the YouTube version for convenience. If you have QuickTime, and we all do, treat yourself.

There’s slightly less scenery chewed by Ledger in this one than in the first one, but combine the hamminess of the role with the sympathy factor and it’s no wonder EW’s talking Oscar before the movie’s even opened.

Blowback

I wonder if the Joker says…….. “Gotham’s chickens…….. coming home…… to roooossst…. HEHEHEHEHEHEHE……….”

Great trailer.

Not for kids, I would guess.

Fantastic beyond words. Can’t wait.

Who knew it was based on a book by Christopher Buckley?

Saw a long trailer at Iron Man (awesome) this weekend and got a thrill up my leg.

The Joker used to be a radical, but that’s in the past. He and his wife Harley are now respected intellectuals in the Gotham community.

Eh… It’s neat and I’ll probably dig it, but I have a deep ambivalence about taking low art and giving it high art pretensions. It’s sort of pitiful as high art and it usually robs it of its low art enjoyment.

Iron Man any good?

I saw Iron Man on Saturday and it really is a great movie to go out and watch. Robert Downey Jr. does a great good job and the ending is really unexpected. It’s a good summer movie.

glasschariot on May 5, 2008 at 10:20 PM

I take it Batman flies or glides, not sure,
but yes it looks really good, and I know its
only a movie, but Ledgers role is awfully dark,
I almost wonder if that character consumed Keith!

This is the most rockin’ comic book summer of all time.

And, who knows, maybe the Hulk won’t totally suck, either.

Heath look crazy good in this flick. I can’t wait.

Ironman AND Batman in the same month. I’m overloading here. I expect both will be great stuff. Ironman certainly was.

And our dark heroes all seem to be Men made of sterner stuff than anyone here in the US of A, except the Real Men in Uniform we all know and love. God Bless the US Military, and the Superheroes who, in reality, salute them.

Iron Man any good?

I went to see Iron Man this weekend with high expectations, but it turned out to be considerably less good than I expected. The parts where Iron Man blows up terrorists more or less rock, but unfortunately these are followed by moral agonizing and pacifist mush that are not featured in the trailers (shockingly!).

To make a long story short, while Tony Stark is imprisoned by the terrorists who he subsequently demolishes as Iron Man, he is shown considerable stocks of weapons that were produced by his own Stark Industries and are now in the terrorists’ hands. This produces a crisis of conscience, as he apparently was not aware that bad people use weapons too.

*** Slight Spoiler Alert ***

Upon his return, Stark declares that Stark Industries will not make any more weapons. Instead, it will develop technology to create miniature generators for clean energy. (This was not apparently conscious self-parody on the part of Hollywood.) Feeling better now that his company will no longer be creating weapons, Stark improves the design of the Iron Man suit he used for his escape, turning it into a superweapon that he uses to fight terrorists and rescue the civilians they are massacring.

Another slight spoiler: Iron Man does not defeat the terrorists by offering them clean energy from miniature generators.

At this point, the cognitive dissonance had given me enough of a headache that I didn’t much enjoy the rest of the movie, which mainly consists of Stark discovering that, of course, his own weapons company were the real bad guys.

But yeah, the 15 minutes or so of Iron Man blowing up terrorists was good.

irishspy on May 5, 2008 at 11:15 PM

Gotta see this one! These new Batman movies are the way Batman is suppossed to be. A vigilante dressed in black who creeps around in the shadows beatin’ the crap outta bad guys … not that flamin’ flambouyant flimflam of the late 80s/early 90s.

Tony737 on May 5, 2008 at 11:21 PM

Ace is right though, that return of the joker clip he linked to was awesome. I hadn’t seen the unedited version of that till just now.

lorien1973 on May 5, 2008 at 11:23 PM

Anybody ever see Batman vs Predator on Youtube? It’s actually not bad for an amatuer video.

Tony737 on May 5, 2008 at 11:24 PM

Iron Man was not about politics it was about, well, just read the comic books and you will see what it is about. Stan Lee always has some sort of message about good and evil in his stories. Downey Jr. was excellent, Palthrow was hot and Bridges as a villan was unexpected by great. Good movie. Worth both the money and the time. Sorry DavidV. Maybe you should read more Marvel Comics to get an idea of what they are about.

I am not watching the trailers although I took glimpses of the one before Iron Man. I want to be pleasantly surprised. By the looks of it, Heath Ledger really makes the film worth watching. Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors currently. Loved what he did in Batman Begins.
As for Iron Man, at first I thought the movie made a political statement with water torture, however it did make Stark cave in (in other words, it actually works as a tactic). As for the sale of weapons to terrorists, Stark was shocked because his production was exclusively for the U.S. military NOT the opponents. Later on in the film, you realize that these weapons are actually effective tools in combat in the right hands. His rival and business partner saw monetary gains and not patriotic, like Stark. It took Stark being tortured by terrorists to see that America’s acts to save people from the Jihadists good, since he used his weapons from his suit to kill some of them.

I want to dig it, but I’m not expecting this movie as much as I imagined.

Pause 1:18 in (at least on my Quicktime version) or in the part where Joker says, “Hello beautiful!” and licks his hair back. Behind him is Pat Leahy being harrased by one of Joker’s goons.

No joke.

This is where I feel the need to make a point that darkness, depending on what your idea of it happens to be, is exactly what’s alienated me from a lot of the output from DC Comics today. Are you by any chance familiar with that screed they published called “Identity Crisis” in 2004, where the Justice League was made out to look bad, and where Elongated Man’s wife, and the Silver Age Atom’s former wife, were both spat upon? And, most importantly of all, are you by any chance familiar with what their main editor, Dan DiDio, told the left-wing Newsarama? Take a look at the following:

NRAMA: Where did the desire for a shift in tonality within the DCU come from?

DD: A lot of this actually came following September 11th. After everything that occurred in New York City, I was coming to work at DC, and going through the Port Authority. At that time, you would walk into the Port Authority, and you would have National Guardsmen standing there with machine guns. He’s standing there holding his machine gun, and is supposed to be making me feel better and more protected, but somehow, that gave me a greater sense of dread – it put me more on edge.

Yep, that’s what he told them 3 years ago, just one of a few clues what’s gone wrong with them since then. Trust me, you’ll thank me I tipped you to that line of DiDio’s someday.

As for the movie, I may be interested in this latest film of the Dark Knight, but that doesn’t mean I think that darkness should be the MO of all heroes in entertainment, or that “bright” ones don’t work as well. Nor do I read Marvel’s output solely for darkness and can’t understand why anyone would think that either. Believe me, I don’t think darkness is healthy for a conservative, and as one myself these days, that’s why I try to be careful what I wish for.

Saw Batman Begins in IMAX at the Navy Pier in Chicago. Bunch of Canadian sailors on thier last night in port (no experinced sailors want to get half cut the day before heading to sea…….errr lake?)

We all walked out a couple hours later with what little hair we have blown straight back! The only movie I intend to see in the theatre this year.

Jim708 on May 6, 2008 at 5:19 AM

Yep, this movie will rock. Iron man did have lefty mush in it where Stark agonizes over weapons “he” sold, which are used by evil people to do evil deeds. And it turns out he didnt sell them at all. But of course, he has no moment of epiphany about that.

dogsoldier on May 6, 2008 at 6:21 AM

And it turns out he didnt sell them at all. But of course, he has no moment of epiphany about that.

Really? I thought it was pretty clear that he knew someone was double dealing within his own organization.

Mindcrime on May 6, 2008 at 7:00 AM

Newsflash: Comics have had left-wing content for decades. I can remember dropping all DC comic books at one point because they had Green Arrow running around with a bunch of anarchists blowing up gun manufacturers and preaching against the evils of the Second Amendment.

I didn’t find the revelation that Stark Industries had made the terrorists weapons to be too out of line with the revelation from Armor Wars that a lot of supervillains were using powered armor based on Stark’s technology. As left wing propaganda goes it wasn’t that bad.

My one complaint with Iron Man was that I didn’t care for Jeff Bridges’ characterization of Obadiah Stane but that’s just because he didn’t match my preconcieved notions of what Stane should be like. Bridges does a decent job and if you’re not familiar with Stane you shouldn’t have any problems with how he plays the character.

As for the next Batman movie, the trailers look good but I’m withholding judgement until I see some actual fight scenes. My big problem with Batman Begins was that the fight scenes all looked like crap.

This is the Batman of Frank Miller. Hence, the name “The Dark Knight”. After Miller’s masterpiece (yes, I called a graphic novel a masterpiece) “The Dark Knight Returns”, Miller wrote “Year One”, on which the first Dark Knight/Batman with Christian Bale was loosely based. Miller’s Batman was more interior dialogue, and saving a city of his upbringing from utter corruption and depravity. It also focused on the rise of James Gordan and how his relationship with Batman grew out of a corrupt police department (along with insights into his (extra)marital affairs). Most of that groundwork had never been done, there was the back story to how Batman came to be, but never any in depth details on the emergence of Batman as a vigilante and crusader that gained the trust of the police force.

Miller’s work is excellent, btw. And, he is a staunch conservative (just as an aside). He has something currently in the works about Batman vs. Islamic terrorists if I’m not mistaken.

Geministorm on May 6, 2008 at 10:11 AM

It is because of the Joker that I’m a big Batman fan (always hated Robin though). What a great villain. He has it all: imagination, intelligence, patience, and a mysterious origin. He’s both evil & completely insane & revels in them both. Two of my favorite stories is “The Killing Joke” and “Devil’s Advocate.” To make a bad guy out of a clown was ingenious. He taps into a primal fear, taking a beloved childhood icon and perverting it, almost betraying a sacred trust. There was awhile when DC presented the Joker as a pathetic petty criminal, an embarrassment to even read. That was a terrible shame and a waste of a idea.

Newsflash: Comics have had left-wing content for decades. I can remember dropping all DC comic books at one point because they had Green Arrow running around with a bunch of anarchists blowing up gun manufacturers and preaching against the evils of the Second Amendment.

You’d like Frank Miller’s work then. His Batman is more about American independence and the government keeping its hands out of private citizens’ business. Batman does utilize the radical (far left-leaning) Green Arrow, but to his own purposes. He knows he can count on Oliver Queen to join in his fight against Superman (whom Batman sees as a stooge of the US government, doing its will and whim without any consideration of what is “right” or “wrong” and kowtowing to their desires after breaking up the JLA), even if Oliver is doing it strictly as a William Ayers type character. Batman will not bow before the government, and will uphold the laws of the land when the government proves it is unable (or unwilling). Yes, he’s a vigilante, but he is enforcing the laws of the land that a broken bureaucracy cannot or will not enforce. In the end, Miller’s Batman is about self dependence and keeping order in civilization by being responsible as an individual.

“no wonder EW’s talking Oscar before the movie’s even opened”?! You must be on something illegal. Ledger looks like crap, the movie looks like crap. The only way they could’ve cast the Joker worse is if they’d've given the part to Morgan Freeman. Iron Man should’ve been delayed, to release the day Batman came out, so this movie would’ve been beaten through the pavement, and into the sub-basement.

[C]ombine the hamminess of the role with the sympathy factor and it’s no wonder EW’s talking Oscar before the movie’s even opened.

While tragic that he felt so helpless and hopeless with no friends with whom to confide, I fail to have much sympathy for a man who takes his own life.
