Good news: McCain to attend La Raza’s annual conference

An election-year pander aimed at shoring up the Latino vote by grudgingly patronizing Open Borders HQ? Why, no: As the boss reminds us, Maverick and the group that charmingly describes itself as “The Race” are old friends with plenty of allies and enemies in common. Can he outdo Obama’s mega-pander from last year? If Kos is right about Texas being in play, the sky’s the limit!
Go read Michelle’s post on this, as needless to say McCain’s feet will have to be held to the fire on this subject regularly to keep him from indulging his natural, jerky pro-amnesty tendencies.

Keep holding on to your fantasies. Huckabee couldn’t even win over Evangelicals, so now he’s going to win over the entire party and (supposedly) eventually the nation. Yeah….
amerpundit on May 5, 2008 at 4:45 PM
He’s one of the most dangerous men to America, but he’s no dummy. He’s not laughing right now. This might be the year when many of his millions will be flushed down a big toilet. I sure wish it upon him, as no one deserves it more.
Entelechy on May 5, 2008 at 4:45 PM
Know what I blame? The attitude, expressed by many at HA, that they’re voting McCain no matter what, because the alternatives are so awful.
He’s aware that we have nowhere else to go, which is why he can get away with crap like this.
And JetBoy. I’d like to believe there’s some good reason for showing up at a meeting of “The Race,” but I’m not that naive.
Are you holding Obama’s associate’s against him? Consistency requires you do the same for McCain and Juan Hernandez et al.
No, McCain isn’t pro-amnesty. He wants illegals to pay a fine, register, blah blah blah.
misterpeasea on May 5, 2008 at 4:46 PM
No shock or surprise here… John ‘Captain Amnesty’ McCain will force amnesty for ILLEGAL immigrants upon us and he’ll open the border flood gates as wide as he can if he becomes POTUS elect. He’s been trying to for years already as it is.
I’ve been saying it for years, and I’ll say it again, John McCain is a RINO and I’ll never ever vote for him. Which
really sucks because I won’t vote for Billary or the Obamassiah either.
RALPH NADER FOR POTUS!? : /
SilverStar830 on May 5, 2008 at 4:46 PM
There is NO WAY McCain appoints any but liberal judges to the Supreme Court. He doesn’t care enough to actually fight his ‘friends’ in the D congress for a conservative constructionist judge. He’ll get together with the majority, ask them who they like, and that’s who will get nominated. McCain DOES NOT CARE. It’s like illegal aliens. The problem is simply that McCain does not care that local governments are overburdened by illegals. McCain does not care that American citizens are taking a back seat to the ILLEGAL ALIEN non-citizens that come here and use up the services that we pay for.
Illegals don’t pay taxes and they don’t vote. . . why then do they get so much attention other than the attention needed to send them back? The reason is McCain does not care. McCain does not live in America. . . he lives in DC (for 25 years). He does not care about AMERICAN CITIZENS who pay taxes.

Only a DumbA$$ could take a cake-walk of a General Election, with the opposition tearing itself a part, and give his base a reason not to hand him the Presidency. McCain is a loser. If he somehow manages to win after he continuously snubs conservatives and calls his own party officials racists, he’ll end up like Pres. George H.W. Bush. “Read my lips!”
What a freaking joke this election has turned out to be. This is the best and brightest in ALL OF THE U.S. OF A. that we’ve got? You’ve got to be kidding me.

*******
Ugh…as usual, I’m getting pummeled by the anti-McCainites. heh…how can conservative Republicans look at the same guy and see totally different people?
But again, it’s not McCain who’s abandoned conservatives. It’s the other way around. Look at all the prominent conservatives who publically endorse McCain! The biggest issue most have with him is this so-called “amnesty”. Not to mention again, Reagan granted blanket amnesty to millions.
Y’all see this as some cut and dry, black and white issue. And it isn’t. Should the illegal issue be dealt with? Absolutely. But “dealt with’ is the term. Look at the long- term implications of this.
JetBoy on May 5, 2008 at 4:48 PM
I am laughing.
Anyone that is surprised by this is not paying attention.
Like I said back when Mitt was done, I am done with the GOP and am supporting Clinton. I would rather have a (D) in office to take the blame for all the crap that is going to hit the fan in the next 4 years due to liberal congresses in the past. Let the grenade explode on the party that pulled the pin.
And Hillary will be just as good as McCain when it comes to the war because by the time the new POTUS is in office everything will be on the upswing and she will want to take credit for a ‘war we’re winning’. And never forget: the second a (D) becomes POTUS, we will be winning every battle front, as reported by the MSM. It will be nice to have the press actually start reporting reality of the war, not their anti-GOP lies.
Let the (D) be in office for the upcoming depression, let them pass Amnesty, let them try to explain $10 a gallon gas / $200 a barrel oil but no domestic production increase, let them finally have to deal with the failure all their plans and policies are and have been.
We conservatives will just have to clean up the mess afterward – like always.

AND IT DIDN’T FIX THE PROBLEM IT MADE IT WORSE! Can we not learn that granting 3 million amnesty in 85 equals another 20 million needing amnesty in 2005, so that equals another 100 million needing amnesty in 2025. Reagan’s amnesty is what caused this problem. Mexicans knew that all they had to do was swim across a river and hello medicare, hello social security, hello free health care, hello medicaid, hello rich white people who we can demand stuff from because they feel guilty that they have so much, hello country we can destroy because we already ruined our own.
Reagan shouldn’t have granted amnesty. Fool me once. . . but if you didn’t learn anything from it you haven’t been paying attention – Fool me twice, shame on me.

One reason I don’t like McCain is that he doesn’t really seem to believe in anything very strongly except, himself. I’ve never heard him take a strong ideological position, as opposed to his unwavering support for the war effort. He typifies many wealthy politicos, they don’t really have much in the way of strong convictions. All that matetrs is getting reelected so their “beliefs” change with the political winds.

Entelechy on May 5, 2008 at 5:03 PM
I agree.
McCain issues a standard disclaimer. “I’m running for re-election to the Senate and I don’t have any ambitions beyond that,” he says. But quoting his late friend Morris Udall, a former Arizona congressman and Democratic presidential candidate, he adds, “Presidential ambition is a disease which can only be cured by embalming fluid.”
wise_man on May 5, 2008 at 5:03 PM
You’re right you said socialism, and not communism, but is there much of a difference in the ideology other than how to gain power? If a communist, and not just one but several can turn to capitalism, then is it a huge leap for a socialist state?

The long term implications are that America will become another Latin American country, with all that implies in terms of politics. And conservatism and libertarianism will disappear. (If they haven’t already.)
flenser on May 5, 2008 at 5:06 PM
By supporting amnesty McCain is playing right into the hands of Democratic strategists who see their long term power dependent on outnumbering white voters. The “trouble” with white voters for Dems has been made very clear and discussed repeatedly in the ongoing campaign for the Dem nomination. Both Obama and Clinton know that politics is a numbers game and that with their pandering and promises of government handouts that minorities lean heavily Democrat. John McCain is setting up the GOP for an eternal walk in the wilderness and he needs to get his head out of his a$$ and see the demographic threat that amnesty presents to the GOP and the last vestiges of our Constitutional democracy. O wrote an article last year about how amnesty was a fast track to socialism because the 20 million ignorant peasants from Latin America a) come from cultures where government plays a larger role then here, b) they are all poor and will join the millions of other poor Americans that receive benefits without paying any taxes, and c) have an expectation that the proper role of government includes cradle to grave care in the form of various social programs. Amnesty will be a debacle for the GOP.

I think he was referring to Morrissey’s implausible case for McCain. McCain’s pandering to La Raza doesn’t exactly lend itself to any reasonable excuse (unless you’re a mindless shill). There’s no room for Morrissey to explain this away. I think that’s what BigD means by Morrissey “making an honest man out of himself”.

ok.
1) The Colonies that later became the USA. They were started as communist/socialist groups – which all failed – and switched to Free Market / Capitalism.
2) Conservatives should NOT obsessed with the Supreme Court. Or any part of the Federal Government. That has bee our biggest mistake. Conservatives make themselves sound like liars/hypocrites when they are obsessed with getting power in Government, yet talk about how bad it is and the need for personal responsibility / individualism.
We have lost recent battles because we acted like government was the answer to the problems – as long as WE were in charge – instead of the CAUSE of the problems. Our actions spoke louder than our words. And if the population’s choice is between two groups that act like government is the answer, of course they are going to choose the one that promises THEM more – the Democrats.
Only when the promises fail to happen, and the fallout occurs (depression/bankruptcy/etc) and Government is exposed as the problem will we have a chance to actually fix things.
A (R) in office when the fallout happens will allow the (D) party to just lie and say that the (R) ruined everything and if only a (D) was in office their promises would have come true. With (D)’s controlling both Congress and the Executive branches no such lie will work.
We just have to remember to act in line with with we believe: GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM, NOT THE SOLUTION.

It was the price he paid in order to (he thought) secure the border. We should learn from his mistake there.
flenser on May 5, 2008 at 5:15 PM
People….From McCain’s website:
I have always believed that our border must be secure and that the federal government has utterly failed in its responsibility to ensure that it is secure. If we have learned anything from the recent immigration debate, it is that Americans have little trust that their government will honor a pledge to do the things necessary to make the border secure.
As president, I will secure the border. I will restore the trust Americans should have in the basic competency of their government. A secure border is an essential element of our national security. Tight border security includes not just the entry and exit of people, but also the effective screening of cargo at our ports and other points of entry.
Border security and our failed immigration system are more examples of an ailing Washington culture in need of reform to regain the trust of Americans. In too many areas — from immigration and pork barrel spending to Social Security, health care, energy security and tax relief — business-as-usual politics prevents addressing the important challenges facing our nation.
In his own words.

From McCain’s press release: “Cinco de Mayo commemorates an important moment in the history of Mexico’s path to freedom. On this day in 1862, a small group of Mexican troops overcame overwhelming force to win the Battle of Puebla. Today, we join together to remember the sacrifice that these Mexican patriots endured, as well as the struggles of all those around the world striving for freedom.”
May 5, or Cinco de Mayo, is NOT a Mexican national holiday.
But McCain will be addressing ‘The Race’ on July 14. This is Bastille Day, France’s NATIONAL HOLIDAY. You think McCain might be mentioning the French on that day?? You remember, the folks that gave us the Statue of Liberty?? Oh, that’s right, not many French illegal aliens to pander to.
This is one ‘bigot’ who will not shut up, Senator Graham. And one who will be writing in Tancredo in the general just so I can sleep at night. Screw McCain and his one business day waiting period for a Z visa. You poke America in the eye, and I refuse to vote for you.
fred5678 on May 5, 2008 at 5:49 PM
Limerick said it exactly right. The main jist of the immigration debate is all about law and order. If we give in to what these illegals want, we’ll be throwing law and order in the dumpster! Think about this. The CIRB proposed having workers ‘come out of the shadows’ and identify themselves. How do you confirm who they really are? What would stop someone, maybe a mexican felon, or even an American felon who has been stealing identities for years from walking in and giving a false name? Now you have given a legal and legit false identity to someone who can go out and purchase a gun or do one of any number of things they couldn’t before. What would keep that person from walking in from the shadows and getting five new legit fake identities? Do you see what I’m getting at? You cannot have someone walk into an ICE office with nothing in their pocket but lint and give them a brand new American identity based on their word alone. What would stop a woman from getting nine or ten identities and getting social services on all of them? (hint: this has already been done).
The CIRB also had in it an “assumption of eligibility” clause which stated that any undocumented person would be considered eligible for the new guest worker program, so they would not be subject to deportation. This would mean that INS would not be able to pick up illegals anymore because technically, nobody would meet that status unless you could prove they were deported before. And when the Mexican authorities will give you a Consular Matricula card without you showing any proof of who you are, you could come up here with a different name every time, like they are doing today. The same people who endlessly rant about not being able to deport 12 million people claim that it would be no problem to cherry pick the two million with criminal records and send them back post haste. Does anybody really believe that. This bill was meant to create a law that was never going to be enforced, but the amnesty part of it would be the only part that had any real effect. That effect would have been to let mexican illegals roam this country freely without being hassled by American law enforcement!
Bikerken on May 5, 2008 at 5:49 PM
I wish the McCainiacs would dispense with the fraud that their candidate has any intention whatsoever to curb illegal immigration and secure our border. And quit berating the rest of us for seeing the truth and what it really means for this country.

From an actual telephone conversation with a McCain campaign spokesperson, after I called the NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS and asked for clarification on a few issues:
Me: “Why was the 90-day waiting period for a Z visa in the 2006 McCain-Kennedy bill changed to one business day in the 2007 McCain-Kennedy version?”
Campaign spokesperson: “That was a mistake.”
Me: “What is Senator McCain’s position on sanctuary cities?”
Spokesperson: “That is democracy in action – each city decides what is best for them.”
Me: “What about the 1996 federal law that bans sanctuary cities?”
Spokesperson: “America was founded by breaking the law.”
No kidding. Actual quotes from a 1/2 hour conversation.

I fell confident that amnesty can be stopped again. President Bush will be gone. You lose McCain as co-sponser. If President Bush could not get Kennedy-McCain through, how will McCain be able to push through a Kennedy-(?) amnesty plan? Who is strong enough on the right, that want’s amnesty, that could join McCain in pushing this legislation? Few, if any. I am not saying we won’t see it, but that they can be stopped.

Illegal immigration will NEVER NEVER NEVER stop, even with a 3,000 mile solid fence, as long as we keep rewarding the thieves with what they came here to steal – residency in our country, even with a fine.
If you believe in McCain’s (and Bush, Kennedy, Reid, Pelosi, Obama, Clinton, ad nauseum) policy of awarding residency to illegal aliens, you should also be in favor of judges awarding the stolen jewelry to the convicted burglars, even with a fine. Both policies encourage the same result – more illegal behavior.
With seven amnesties (the big general one in 1986, and six targeted smaller ones since) so far, you would think the definition of insanity would begin to take effect. With special interests of greedy employers, US Chamber of Commerce, Democrats and GOP trying to out-pander, etc. – don’t hold your breath.
Get your state legislature to work on the problem,
as these states are doing.

I wonder what he will say. “My friends…”
SouthernGent on May 5, 2008 at 6:22 PM
That’s “mis amigos” for McCain.

Anyone who thinks McCain is not going to push the Amnesty fraud again is fooling themselves. The last time, he and Ted tried to push it through without any committee hearings whatsoever. That tells me that he has a real hard on to do this and he will stop at nothing to get it through. He is a tempermental snotty senile old ass with two feet in the grave and the grim reaper standing behind him with one foot in the air ready to kick him in. Funny, he keeps putting back the release of his medical records six weeks at a time. I think he knows he’s not going to live much longer but his ego still wants to be president before he dies. Either way, I cannot vote for him because I don’t want the amnesty debacle that he will preside over on my hands.
I’d sooner be re-circumsized with a butter knife on a moving carnival ride before voting for McCain!

JetBoy: Forget it. You’ve picked one of two major places on the right blogosphere (the other being Malkin’s site) where you’re just going to be called “pro-amnesty” (or pro-La Raza) if you aren’t calling for the heads of anyone who isn’t for mass deportation, especially John McCain. You may as well be pleading the case for winning the war against Islamofascism over at the Daily Kos. Be sure to say something like, “lets nuke all the diaperheads” when you go there to experience a similar effect. ;)
Life’s too short to argue with people on teh internets about something they’re convinced will bring about the end of civilization.
Like it or not, McCain was right when he said the rhetoric employed by our side w/r/t illegal immigration has driven away a whole lot of Hispanic Republican voters (tip: not all Hispanics are illegals, and not all legal ones vote Democrat–at least until now; some are actually even productive members of society!). It’s kinda hard to vote for a party when you’re convinced most of its members hate you. Even if that’s not really the case, that’s certainly the image we (conservatives/Republicans) have among most Hispanic Americans now. Kiss those pro-life, military supporting votes goodbye!

See what I mean, JetBoy?
bamapachyderm on May 5, 2008 at 6:40 PM
Of course he is… He owns (or at least has a lease with the option to buy) all three of the major candidates.

Queeg better hope Obama doesn’t completely Hindenburg and blow the Dem nomination, because, if it comes down to Queeg vs. Evita, I’ll down a shot, vote for Evita and then take a long hot shower and try to get clean.
“La Raza”. Imagine if a white political movement refered to themselves as THE Race.
Oh wait…

Man am I missing teh Fred. “We need high fences and wide gates, and we decide who gets to come into our country”
We had our chance, red America, and we frikking blew it.
Everyone who voted Rudy, Huckabee, or Romney in the primaries is getting exactly what they deserve right now. Exactly. Unfortunatly, you’ve pulled me along for the ride as well :(
VolMagic on May 5, 2008 at 6:53 PM
What a stupid reducto ad deportatum argument. You’re quite the tool, no?
VolMagic on May 5, 2008 at 6:56 PM
If he goes, he might just as well stay there.
Foul tempered Juan McCain should just sit down and write an opinion piece to the Wall Street Journal stating why he hates conservatives. The poor old fool must be too dense to understand the relationship between dissing conservatives and campaign fund raising.
Zorro on May 5, 2008 at 6:57 PM
Here is what I expect from McCain’s public speech to La Raza:
And in private he will say to them:
LegendHasIt on May 5, 2008 at 6:58 PM
Beth, I love you, and this may be true, but his policy remains crap, and for me, the crappiness of his policy and the damage it’ll do trumps the potential damage caused by pissing off hispanic voters. Both options suck, but I know which one I think will be more damaging.
Conservatives are learning that lesson now!
Again, seems to be the attitude McCain has about conservative voters. Of course, what you say here can be said of the Huck-type voters too, and nobody is freaking out if they threaten to bail.

Reporter: Senator McCain, is it true that if you become President you will put a real fence along the border with Mexico rather than just some phony so called “virtual fence”? And a follow up question sir, if so what will the physical fence look like?
John McCain: That is a very good question and yes when I become el President I will put up a physical fence. What will it look like? Well it will run the full length of the border and have special security gates every 100 feet.
All the security gates will have on them:
1) Press one for Spanish (with a response of “Welcome Amigo, my country is your country and please take a free map to the wonderful plantation owner employer of your choice. Also please feel free to enroll you children in our schools and demand that they be taught in Spanish and please also feel free to avail yourself of all the free medical care that you want. If you are a card carrying member of La Raza, please go to the waiting limousine as you are an extra special Amigo of mine.”).
2) Press two for English (with a response of “Go to
Infierno you damned bigoted nativist lazy madre fornicario gringo who does not want what is right for America del Norte!!!”).

ha! No, I don’t have that “Freeze screen” problem…
Best. Game. Evah!
Not implying, I am conservative. Feel free to ask my view on any topic…and you’ll see. Heck, I believe I was one of the first people to suggest Fred Thompson run for Prez waaay back when. Just because I actually like McCain doesn’t make me not a conservative.
How right you are. And I agree with Michelle on 99% of what she says…just not about McCain. It’s probably a good thing I’m not registered over there…
JetBoy on May 5, 2008 at 7:02 PM
When has John McCain given reason not to trust him? When has he ever lied?
JetBoy on May 5, 2008 at 7:04 PM
Give it up you silly Gringos and learn Spanish. Mi siervo Juan el Vengful has once again made it very clear to you nativist closed border red neck bigots that your time of ascendancy will soon be over. Get used to the coming new order or leave America del Norte.

I have not read all these comments but I saw McCain on Fox this evening and he said that he supported border security, he also said that the tenor of the debate had hurt Republicans with Latinos. I agree, it did and it did not need to.
Not every Latino is an illegal. Back in 2006 Republicans were sure that being hardliners would help them, but it did not. The only thing it did was cost them the Latino vote. I am not saying that we should abandon border security, but people on the right do not need to alienate an entire demographic just to make a point. It gains them nothing.
And I think Michelle Malkin went too far with this. She went too far with Dubai too and in both cases it hurt Republicans and what did they get out of it? What political gain? Obama in the White House. Gee thanks Michelle.

I hope she is just getting warmed up myself.

Mr. “I learned my lesson” has Juan f*cking Hernandez as his Hispanic outreach director. He’s learned nothing. You can’t throw a stone without hitting a Hispanic conservative with more loyalty to the US than that tool.
