Audio: Fred vouches for McCain on judges

The bad news: There shall be no Attorney General Arthur Branch. The good news: That’s the only bad news, if he’s to be believed. InstaGlenn promises that this won’t be the only pinch-hitting Fred does for Maverick on this subject, and I believe it. After the Gang of 14 and his bizarre comment about Alito (furiously denied but never convincingly debunked), McCain needs all the True Conservative testimonials he can get. Trotting out the guy who helped shepherd John Roberts through the Senate is a good start. Although in this as in so much else, Obama’s his best spokesman: Revisit this quote from February and ponder the alternative.

Exit question: Second look at the Gang of 14? Rick Santorum, of all people, admitted last month in endorsing McCain that Maverick was right and he was wrong. Having it in place now won’t necessarily stop the Democrats from nuking the filibuster to clear the way for Obama’s appointees if need be, but insofar as it exists as a precedent it does make it that much harder for the left to get rid of it without appearing to break some kind of taboo.

Gee, thanks Fred. In the meantime, I think we still know what we’re really gonna end up with if McCain’s in the White House. Still not as frightening as the prospects under Barack Hussein Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton [shudders].

Hey Fred!? Hows that spending-my-money thing going?

This gentleman’s testimony is worth about as much as Tom Hanks blowing kisses at Obama.

I’d love to believe Fred. Fred was my guy. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that ANYONE can tell from one second to the next what McLame will do. So, no, I DON’T believe that McLame can be trusted on any issue, much less placing constructionist judges on the bench. Heck. McLame has proven that he hasn’t the slightest clue what that “Constitution” thing even IS, so how can we believe he is knowledgeable enough to place the right judges?

Warner Todd Huston on May 5, 2008 at 4:42 PM

Can he really be trusted?

Who’s to say he does not gives us a Ginsburg? McCain is not half of the movement conservative Reagan was yet we got that living constitutionalist from him? Obama’s blatant liberalism is the Republican nominee’s best endorsement on potential SCOTUS appointee’s. How did we get here? HOW?!?!

Theworldisnotenough on May 5, 2008 at 4:44 PM

Pray tell, what conservative justice has McCain ever voted against? And if you say McCain only voted yes for political expediency, when has McCain ever done anything for political expediency before? McCain looks you right in the face when he’s jabbing his thumb in your eye.

RBMN on May 5, 2008 at 4:49 PM

Why Fred would waste his romance with conservatives to bat for McCain is beyond me.

Spirit of 1776 on May 5, 2008 at 4:50 PM

As far as the Gang of 14 is concerned, I’m afraid we are now stuck with a “bipartisan” body that stands above both committee and the full Senate. Having McCain as president will galvanize that idea, for better or worse. Fred’s validation of McCain won’t change that.

Weight of Glory on May 5, 2008 at 4:51 PM

I understand that McCain is giving a big speech tomorrow about judicial appointments, etc.

acleaver on May 5, 2008 at 4:51 PM

“In those difficult cases,” Obama said, “the critical ingredient is supplied by what is in the judge’s heart.” Roberts and Alito were bad judges, he decided, because their hearts weren’t in the right place.

Weren’t in the right place? What, the Constitution?

I have never doubted Fred. Fred knows the deal…unfortunately, some conservatives don’t see it.

I agree whole-heartedly, the “Gang of 14″ and McCain were responsible for Alito and Roberts getting on the SC.

He addressed this. Maybe not the best defense, but in an interview he claimed that it grew way beyond it’s bounds.
I don’t think anyone is mad that soft money was targeted, just the insane reached M-F has achieved.

VolMagic on May 5, 2008 at 5:05 PM

McCain isn’t going to appoint anyone to the Supreme Court. He’s going to ask the Democrat majority who they want and that is who will get nominated. Fred and McCain can say whatever they want about who they’ll nominate. They can point to John Roberts as a successful nominee. . . but he was like Tiger Woods or Chris Paul - so much better than anyone else it was a no brainer.

McCain will be in the Senate over the next 4 years so he’ll still be in position to pick judges. Most of the time I wonder who’s side he is on.

ThackerAgency on May 5, 2008 at 5:08 PM

The Bush people trying to do undo the filibuster was one of the most stupid things I can imagine. The Democrats get to block right wing judges so we get to block the left wing ones. And really, the politics of the judiciary should be representative enough of the population that large groups can’t rightly feel bias.

In short, McCain was absolutely right to join the Gang of 14. There shouldn’t have even been a need for it.

I was thinking O’Connor and confused the two. Sandra was a good judge, her fondness for international law was a thorny issue, yet she did rule with the majority in Casey, but Ginsburg…

So nevermind my previous post. I still do not trust McCain, if he can find a good reason to speak to LaRaza he can find a good reason to nominate a non-conservative.

Theworldisnotenough on May 5, 2008 at 5:23 PM

The stalking horse who was working for McCain is saying nice things about McCain? Wholda thunk it?

Fred was McCain’s campaign chair in 2000 and then ran against him in 2008. What would cause someone to do something like that? Hmmmm…I wonder…

Though Ted Olson was last seen chairing the judicial committee for the guy who spent all his time campaigning in Florida.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on May 5, 2008 at 5:25 PM

If Fred Thompson, even with his occasional missteps, is not conservative enough to believably vouch for McCain over Obama, or McCain over Clinton, then there’s just no hope for you. You’ve wandered off the trail and gotten lost somewhere.

He admitted that it was a mistake. Yes Fred! is a true conservative…just like Reagan…and he made a mistake…just like Reagan. Conservatives are not perfect, they are, however driven by a set of principals that provide the voter with at least a sense of what the person is going to do. McLame is the furthest thing from that.

Chakra Hammer on May 5, 2008 at 6:01 PM

Today we had to hear McCain proclaim AGAIN his superiority over the vast majority of American citizens regarding the virtues of his amnesty for illegal alien overhaul.

Yes, it was good to hear Fred Thompson speak. But why can’t we get anyone to discuss McCain’s objectives beyond better judicial nominations than what the DNC communists will force upon us. We understand that already. But given McCain’s absolute unwillingness to call an illegal alien in the wrong for trespassing and filling our prison systems and creating havoc upon our tax burden usurping CITIZEN RIGHTS, exactly where does McCain stand on domestic terrorism committed by NON-CITIZENS inside America? We know he supports our troops. But what about our BORDERS and our police, and our ability as individuals and as militias to defend ourselves in our own homes and communities? McCain, along with Bush, called the MinuteMen vigilantes for WATCHING the border and REPORTING to the proper authorities.

This is the time to pin McCain to the conservative platform, while the Democrats fight amongst themselves. Sure, go and vote for Hillary when it’s legal to get even with the Democrats planting McCain on the GOP ticket. Still, going and voting takes one hour of one day. Getting the public pressure on McCain to disavow his alignment with liberals as a RINO requires commitment from spokespersons like Rush Limbaugh. Why claim to be conservative if it is a bad fit, stuck in McCain’s pocket, while McCain is stuck in the Progressive pocket? Get McCain’s support, or deny McCain his comfort zone.

Rush Limbaugh was wrong when he told a caller today that Superdelegates have always been around, as they’re a rather new invention that the DNC uppercrusts pushed onto “the little people” to keep everyone in line with “what’s best” for them all. Gag. As far as Rush and his OpChaos go, Rush is doing absolutely NOTHING to get McCain in line with conservative concerns, all air time being spent puffing on his own ego. HotAir and all the “hot shots” have yet to flex muscle to get a blogosphere referendum for a conservative platform affidavit from McCain.

Please don’t get me wrong. Reagan was a great as they come. But the way some people define conservative now, there wouldn’t be a chance of anyone ever being the Republican president. That said, McCain had best watch himself at the separatist, racist, terrorist rally he’s going to attend. He may destroy the last tiny bit of goodwill he’s trying to generate amongst us. Who the hell advised him that this would be a good way to reach the latino community?

Mars Needs Neocons on May 5, 2008 at 7:22 PM

One thing we KNOW about FRED…he tells it like it is, consequences be damned.

If Fred says we can trust McCain on judges, that’s good enough for me. He knows McCain. He ushered Roberts through the confirmation. And he’s the most honest politician I’ve ever seen.

I actually think McCain on judges is the most important reason to vote for him. I find it hard to believe he’ll be as bad as the Senior Bush and if he’s as half as good as W then he’ll be pretty good on this ONE issue.
