Wallace rips Dean on DNC distortions

posted at 12:15 pm on May 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Send to a Friend | printer-friendly

Howard Dean made his much-anticipated appearance on Fox, and found the environment much less friendly than did Barack Obama last week. Chris Wallace pressed the DNC chair hard on the latest ads from his organization, which even the nonpartisan group Fact Check insist are distortions of John McCain’s remarks on the economy and on Iraq:

Dean sputters and spins, but doesn’t make any headway against Wallace in this appearance. He flashes a piece of paper that supposedly contains what McCain really said, but Wallace calls his bluff and shows the whole clip. Wallace also scornfully ripostes Dean’s contention that it would take “six minutes”, when it only takes less than ten seconds to show how the DNC used creative editing to distort the remarks.

It’s a remarkably dishonest effort from a remarkably dishonest man. Pay attention to how Dean never actually answers Wallace’s accusations of distortion, changing the subject back to the DNC’s talking points each time. Dean never defends his ads directly, and for good reason; they’re indefensible. Dean found himself overmatched against Wallace. Next time, he should stay in the intellectual minor leagues at MS-NBC with Keith Olbermann.

It was a dumb comment by McCain since he must have known - or should have - how it would be used.

He should have worded it so that the “not getting hurt” part of the line comes before the extended stay part. I.e., “As long as American soldiers are not getting hurt or attacked and they’re safe, I think a long stay in Iraq - 50 years or even a 100 - is in the best interest of this country and our security and safety.”

Sure is easy to run a campaign from behind a keyboard and monitor.

When he is completed with his tenure as the head of the DNC, Howard Dean will make Terry MacCauliff look like the paragon of truth and honesty. It must be a job requirement that the head of the DNC be a shamelss, bald faced liar and nitwit.

Mallard T. Drake on May 4, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Dr Dean was rather laughable, and dishonest. Saying that bringing up Wright is race baiting and that democrats would never bring him up and use Willie Horton tactics.

Someone needs to tell him that Hillary thinks it is an issue, Obama acknowledged it was, and that Democrats were the first to bring up Willie Horton

I don’t know what it is but there is something about Dean that reminds me of Mr. Magoo. Except Magoo had a sense of humour. Kinda of appropirate now that Mr. Magoo has been banned from children’s television because someone thought his bad vision was being made fun of.

Howard Dean also reminds me a little of Salvadore Allende with his mindless marxist prattle. A smile that really isn’t a smile. Living a luxurious life while telling the rest of us to hunker down.

SouthernGent on May 4, 2008 at 12:47 PM

I already knew that Howard Dean is a disgusting and dishonest POS wrapped in a human body; what I didn’t fully understand until this interview, is that Chris Wallace has much larger set of balls than Bill O’Reilly, and is a much better journalist with a much smaller ego.

Keemo on May 4, 2008 at 12:49 PM

Dean calls Republicans hateful and “evil,” and then says Republicans call people names.

In this clip, he says “I don’t think that’s so, Chris,” in response to Wallace showing him, point-by-point, how he’s a liar. What McCain says doesn’t hinge on what Howard Dean thinks; the message is objective. I will say that he was right about the Bush tax cuts, on which point McCain changed his mind.

There is no reasoning with the insane. The Democrats should have him fired/impeached/whatever, if they ever want to hope of being a party with honor.

Whole thing made me realize that the rumors about Fox being in the tank for Hillary are absolutely true. First they Softball Hillary on O’Reilly and then really take it to Dean (not that he doesn’t merit it.) Dean must have been pushing Hillary to get out/Obama as nominee.

I’m beginning to come to the conclusion that I’m a Clinton supporter. The left wing of the GOP engineered the primaries so Rudy would win and settled for McCain. Should cranky old bastard get elected in 2008, the chances in 2012 are nil. However letting a Democrat fail gives the possiblility that the real Republicans can regroup and drive the Rudy/McCain moneychangers from the temple and put up a decent candidate.

no wonder hillary went on the Factor. ORieley is an intellectual lightweight and she gave him so much opportunity to show how most of their positions are “fantasy”. Instead he tried to bully her and then backed off when she talked herself into a corner. If the Dems had ANY guts they would go on with Wallace, Dennis Prager or Michael Medved. Before Soros, the Democratic party was pro-America. There have always been fringe elements in both parties, but the crazies got the upper hand with the Dems, and the Pubbies have taken the place of centrist Democrats.. Both parties seem to have drifted away from the traditional values. I anticipate much more viable interest in a split in both parties. It’ll take awhile. Dean says how can we expect to stay in Iraq without being attacked by local militias, etc.

It’s the standard soft racism of liberalism: We cannot expect those “brown” people to act in a civilized manner. Its the same thing over and over again,

Here’s what I hear coming from Dean’s mouth: “We simply cannot expect those with more melanin in their skin to the same expectations as those of us with less melanin.”

Kinda reminds me of a Dean appearance on FNS from 2003.

WALLACE: But, Governor, don’t you think that getting rid of Saddam Hussein and trying to set up a democracy in the Middle East, whether you agree with the way he went about it or not, shows moral purpose?

DEAN: I think getting rid of Saddam Hussein is a wonderful thing. But the question is, is it a good idea to send 135,000 troops unilaterally to do it?

Let me — can I just take one second and read something George Bush’s father wrote in his book? This is about the first Gulf War. “To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab world against us, and make a broken tyrant into a latter- day Arab hero. It would have taken us way beyond the imprimatur of the international law bestowed by the resolutions of the Security Council, assigning young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator, and condemning them to fight in what would be an unwinnable urban guerrilla war.”

George Bush’s father had it right. We could have contained Saddam Hussein indefinitely. We were flying over his country. He had no air force. We were bombing him when we needed to, in response to anti-aircraft fire.

I thought it was a mistake to go into Iraq. If we had gone in, we should have gone in with a real coalition, the way that his father did, and not do it unilaterally.

WALLACE: Governor, there is this continuing question, even in your own party, about whether you’re fit, whether you’re up to being commander in chief. And I want to ask you about a radio interview that you did earlier this week. You were asked about the president suppressing information about what he knew pre-9/11, and here’s what you said.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DEAN: The most interesting theory that I have heard so far, which is nothing more than a theory, I can’t think — it can’t be proved, is that he was warned ahead of time by the Saudis. Now who knows what the real situation is.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WALLACE: The most interesting theory is that the president was warned ahead of time by the Saudis. Why would you say that, Go who believe that. We don’t know what happened in 9/11. Tom Kean is trying to get some information from the president…

WALLACE: Do you believe that?

DEAN: … which doesn’t — no, I don’t believe that. I can’t imagine the president of the United States doing that. But we don’t know, and it’d be a nice thing to know.

WALLACE: I’m just curious why you would call that the most interesting theory.

DEAN: Because it’s a pretty odd theory.

What we do believe is that there was a lot of chatter that somehow was missed by the CIA and the FBI about this, and that for some reason we were unable to decide and get clear indications of what the attacks what were going to be. Because the president…

WALLACE: I guess…

DEAN: Because the president won’t give the information to the Kean commission we really don’t know what the explanation is.

WALLACE: Let’s move on to this question of giving information out. Why have you sealed, for 10 years, about half of your records as governor of Vermont?

DEAN: Well, we gave 60 percent of them out to the public, which is fine. Vermont, like many other states, has a doctrine of protecting people who advise you for a period of time. We took advantage of that doctrine because that’s the law, that’s the way it’s been done.

And, you know, there is not much interesting stuff except for advice that people gave me, which they thought was going to be confidential, and probably some private papers. What we’re trying to do is figure out how to get a third party to review those records so that we can make some of those records public.

The DNC knew what they were getting into when they chose him to be chairman. Ye reap what ye sow.

Are you trying to get McCain defeated? He should not have said that either and in fact used to say very much the opposite when his mind was functioning better.

I not only think we could get along without it [United States military presence in Iraq], but I think one of our big problems has been the fact that many Iraqis resent American military presence, and I don’t pretend to know exactly Iraqi public opinion. That’s what I’m responding to.

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:03 PM

What was shamnesty all about then? And what’s one of the main reasons why the conservatives are not with McCain yet?

p.s. MB4 has tens of times said that he’s a “he”.

Entelechy on May 4, 2008 at 4:07 PM

Those are C.A.I.R and la Raza’s talking points

.

You said: “Their [Muslims] natural instinct does not permit them to be moral”.

That’s not bigotry?

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:08 PM

You’re my demo, as they say.

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:03 PM

Are “they” speaking to you through your hair dryer?

MB4 on May 4, 2008 at 4:08 PM

p.s. MB4 has tens of times said that he’s a “he”.

Okay “he”.

You think McCain - John McCain - wants, deliberately and willfully wants - not that’s he wrong or misguided or stupid - but that he wants to sell out this country?

He deliberately wants to hurt this country?

Again, not that he’s stupid or ill-advised or dumb.

McCain wants to sell this country out and hurt it?

That’s dumb.

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:10 PM

Are “they” speaking to you through your hair dryer?

No, they’re the ones incapable of intellectually responding to posts that show the utter bankruptcy of their views.

Views such as: “Their [Muslims] natural instinct does not permit them to be moral”.

Now that’s a bankrupt and bigoted view that needs to be condemned where ever and when ever it pops up.

Substitute Christians or Jews or Buddhists or any other religion for Muslims and see what that shows.

You are dodging the matter of your doing extreme C.A.I.R and la Raza talking points.

And no it was a quote from Mark Twain, as was also indicated previously, and not bigotry, but rather his observations put to verse. He did that a lot and had no sacred cows (or goats or camels for that matter).

SteveMG, it’s already too late. McCain just wants to make it official. So does Hillary and Obama. You can call anyone dumb all you wish. It doesn’t make it so. Also, who has time to fight shamnesty this good Sunday? We’ll have to fight it again no matter who wins in 2008.

This country is already hurt plenty. Just look at Calif. budget? I work in the hospital business. I could write you novels about illegal immigration, but I’ll spare you the details today.

Entelechy on May 4, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I agree.

Another debate for another time.

Last word: On this issue, I think McCain is dumb; not venal.

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:17 PM

Do you think that Muslims “natural instinct does not permit them to be moral”?

Natural? Innate, genetic, inborn?

Do you agree or not with that statement?

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Steve, none of them ar dumb. They, lefties/righties, look out for their respective political interests, and in the process both do destroy this country. We may use whichever terminology we please, but that’s the bottom line.

I think that you and I agree more on amnesty, than we disagree. Have a great Sunday, and don’t worry too much. We’ll be here to sort it out.

It is enlightened American free speech and you sound more holier-than-thou and more-offended-than-thou and more-pc-than-thou than most on the other side of the “street”.

Substitute Christians or Jews or Buddhists or any other religion for Muslims and see what that shows.

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:14 PM

If you think that Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism are equatable to Islam then I can’t help you. Maybe Robert Spencer can still reach you though. Why don’t you order a copy of his book, “Religion of Peace?: Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn’t.” and then maybe you could start to see the light?

MB4 on May 4, 2008 at 4:22 PM

Steve, none of them ar dumb.

Did you see the Howard Dean interview?

There goes your argument (tongue in cheek).

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:24 PM

SteveMG on May 4, 2008 at 4:19 PM

I obviously think that it has a lot of merit, Judge Judy.

MB4 on May 4, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Steve, by “none of them” I meant McCain, Hillary and Obama. Dean is in a ‘league’ of his own :)

You have every right to hold such noxious views about an entire group of people.

And I have every right to denounce those stupid, ill-informed and patently absurd views about 1 billion+ human beings.

You do know what “natural instinct” means? Natural? As in genetic or innate?

One billion Muslims are naturally immoral?

All of them? Every man woman and child including those who are trying to reform the religion and liberalize it?

Every single one of them?

Absurd.

Why don’t you try something different for a change of pace and respond to someones own words rather than changing someones words and then “responding” to that? If you keep on as you are someone might get the idea that you are some kind of bigot.

MB4 on May 4, 2008 at 4:31 PM

If you keep on as you are someone might get the idea that you are some kind of bigot.

This coming from the person who says all Muslims are naturally immoral.

Not some of them. All of them. Including those who are trying to liberalize and modernize the religion away from its ugly elements.

And exactly what group of people am I bigoted against?

People who say stupid and silly things?

I plead guilty.

Your understanding of literature and famous quotes is profoundly lacking.

Your more-pc-than-thou masturbation is running rampant though.

Are you fracken pc induced brain dead? It was a quote, a Mark Twain quote. Quotes are statements of opinion, often exaggerated, sometimes satirical, and almost always generalizations.

Last chance: Do you embrace Twain’s views of Muslims?

Twain has the defense or excuse of writing about a century ago when such thoughts were common.

No one has the excuse today. For we are better educated.

Or should be.

Sun Tzu: All war is based on deception.
SteveMG: You are an idiot Sun Tzu. Not every single war is based on deception!

Sun Tzu: He who is prudent and lies in wait for an enemy who is not, will be victorious.
SteveMg: You are crazy Sun Tzu as that is not always the case!

Sun Tzu: There is no instance of a nation benefiting from prolonged warfare.
SteveMG: You are a damn bigot Sun Tzu as that sounds like a put down of Iraqi Muslims!

Niccolo Machiavelli: People are by nature fickle, and it is easy to persuade them of something, but difficult to keep them persuaded.
SteveMG: Now you there Niccolo you are bigoted against the whole human race! You are even worse than that stupid bigot Sun tzu!

04:26 in the clip: bio scroll at the bottom calls Dean in 2004 a “Democratic Presidential Nominee“.

Did I miss something? Wasn’t Kerry the nominee? …and Dean was the big screaming idiot that the Dems thought was so great they made him chairman?

pecan, idiocy gets rewarded by the lefties.
