Video: Are you ready for jihadi-busting bugbots?

Via Danger Room. Indubitably awesome but perhaps not for the purpose demonstrated in the clip. They know they’ve got a pair of turds somewhere upstairs, right? And they also know that a missile’s going to take out pretty much that entire floor. So … just call in the strike. Otherwise you risk jihadi-busting bugbot being stepped on. Seems to me like this sort of thing is really designed for close quarters house-to-house fighting, to eliminate ambushes.

As with most truly awesome weapons, the sweetest part is the utter paranoia it’ll engender in the enemy once the word gets out. Every time a spider crawls past or a dragonfly floats by, they’ll look and wonder.

Completely unfeasible right now. I’ve built enough robots to know that kind of technology is just a pipe dream for the time being.

Haven’t the Israelis developed a similar tool? A bee, if memory serves? Maybe it was just a prototype…

They just need to make them with small caliber arms and just make a robot army. That’d be sweet.

Yeah, the video is of the sort that’s like “This will be t3h cool, please fund us!$!$”

That being said, this is, in my opinion, the way to waste government money.

ErikTheRed on May 3, 2008 at 5:07 PM

Allah is right; the jihadi primates already think American technology is magic. Clips like this, even if they are hopelessly unrealistic, will strike fear and paranoia in their primitive souls. Brilliant psy-ops if nothing else.

Better to send in GM termites in to eat their Korans.

Get to the source.

profitsbeard on May 3, 2008 at 7:31 PM

Oh this is brilliant,so the real question is how do you
go about giving Jihady’s the a hum, crabs! Special delivery
no doubt!

I like the old method better, spy delivers micro-chipped gps
do dad inserted in pizza,Jihady eats pizza, hellfire is on
its way to help with Jihadys uncomfortable gas pains from eating pizza! Its a win win for both sides!

profitsbeard on May 3,2008 at 7:31PM.

profitsbeard: Lets make it a challenge and technical wonder,
how about the termites lift, carry the Koran on
its way to the Loo,up the side of the porcelin
and a mini siren goes off,and dumps it in,a
micro video records it and we You-Tube it!
Ha ha ha.

‘Robots’? These gizmos can be remote-controlled, not autonomous, so don’t looked so far-fetched to me. There’s a lot of research going on we don’t know about. Some involves controlling real insects, equipped with cameras or other devices. Where man-made mechanisms are too bulky and awkward, nature’s little machines are not.

The video’s like something I would’ve watched seventeen or eighteen years ago, after sneaking back into the house stoned.

Hell, let’s just convince them that we’ve created skin-job cylons who’ve infiltrated their ranks! Psyche!

Maquis on May 3, 2008 at 9:18 PM

We get them paranoid about the little bugs, then we should make a video showing these things biting the Jihadis, then watch as they covert en masse to Christianity. That would make heads explode.

Nethicus on May 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM

Imagine the terrorists’ paranoia during cicada season…

rbb on May 3, 2008 at 9:39 PM

Y’know.

If you’re going to “showcase” “teh Awesome” of future tech then get somebody to do your CGI presentation that isn’t a 40-year-old SFX wannabe using a pirated copy of Maya and a 3 year old computer.

Geez.

Mistahtibbs on May 3, 2008 at 10:02 PM

Oh yeah.

And those ideas are..AWESOME!

Seriously, the shitty graphics notwithstanding, miniaturize those mofos and send them in.

Make the jihadi fools paranoid EVERY time an insect enters their peripheral vision.

Sweet, sweet paranoia…will destroya!

Mistahtibbs on May 3, 2008 at 10:04 PM

How is the Gay *Bomb* coming along? - Vinny

Sadly, the Air Force gave up on it, but that would’ve been awesome, jihadis boneing each other instead of shooting at our Troops. Time to spread another rumor!

By the way, the armed robots are NOT being taken out of Iraq.

Tony737 on May 3, 2008 at 10:22 PM

I think I destroyed thousands of those things in Halflife. Destroy anything that moves or flies including the bugs.

They really will start using “a cannon on a fly.”

*uzi burst* What was that all about?!…Oh, a bumblebee.

eeyore on May 3, 2008 at 11:39 PM

That is pretty dang cool…can only imagine how much fun it would be to send a bug bomb into a bathroom and detonate it while some poor bomb maker is doing his morning routine..kinda makes me sad though. Weapons keep getting more compact; I always liked our old battleships; they PROJECTED the wrath of our country; just looking at them sitting out there…when we used to talk about future robot weapons, we always speculated to the large side, giant mechs striding around the battlefield squishing the enemy..instead, we’re looking at dragonflys and spiders now. Cool, but kind of a let down.

I’m all in AP.

awake on May 4, 2008 at 12:14 AM

Parts of that already exist. The ground robot the “soldier” unstrapped from his back is made by I-Robot (yes, the makers of the roomba also make the bomba) is called a SUG-V. Is currently operated by a single laptop equipped soldier but it is currently been demonstrated as part of the network. The “bugs” are only static demos in a lab, but the current generation of MAV (micro aerial vehicle) is about the size of a small beer keg. Awesome recon platform and very easy to fly.

29Victor on May 4, 2008 at 12:44 AM

Can’t the bugs just fly into the jihadi’s ear and bore into their brains? Explosions are messy.

hepcat on May 4, 2008 at 1:16 AM

All that, and then they just blow the damn building up anyway.

wtf.

I had flashbacks of Goliath after seeing the first few seconds, which isn’t a good sign either.

Mistahtibbs on May 3, 2008 at 10:02 PM

I bet that was done on an FPS game engine. It’s faster and easier than doing it from scratch, even if the end product doesn’t look particularly great.

jic on May 4, 2008 at 1:36 PM

I just wanna see more daisy cutters and moabs used.

TheSitRep on May 4, 2008 at 7:54 PM

Si, se puede!

I’m looking for a swarm of insect/detectors that will fly and crawl though a house giving some lieutenant a 3D diagram of the building and the situation.

…one day.

Almost the same quote (from a different person) regarding taking missiles out of the air by lazer, last year.

The REAL insects down here in Florida would eat those robot bugs for lunch.
