Rezko looking to cut a deal?
posted at 8:55 am on May 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
The prosecution in the corruption trial of Tony Rezko has just about concluded its case, and the defense will start presenting its case as early as Tuesday. Or will they? The local CBS affiliate reports that Rezko’s team has gotten chummy with the prosecution after the damaging testimony of Ali Ata and might be looking for a Get Out Of Jail Free card:
The prosecution is preparing to rest its case as the politically charged corruption trial of Antoin “Tony” Rezko rolls toward its climax.
There’s speculation Friday that Rezko could be ready to cut a deal. ….
As the trial winds down, speculation is rampant that Rezko may yet cut a deal, plead guilty and tell the government everything he knows.
“If Joe Duffy and Tony Rezko knew that Ali Ata was going to be a witness in the case to bolster the testimony of Stuart Levine, that would have been a major consideration before this trial even started,” Miller said.
If he wants to cut a deal, time has almost run out. The judge expects closing arguments in nine days, and the jury will get the case after that. The addition of Ata has given corroboration to other prosecution witnesses to influence-peddling and outright corruption, and Rezko could be looking at decades in prison if the jury believes Ata and Levine.
If Rezko turns into a witness, who has the most to lose? Right now, that looks like Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich, whom Ata tied to at least one payoff. Rezko could elaborate on the role that Iraqi financier Nadhmi Auchi played in power games, and Rezko’s critical role in arranging bargains might prove even more interesting when told from a first-person perspective.
Rezko will look out for himself. He won’t do a long prison stretch to save someone else’s bacon. By this time next week, Rezko will be singing — and we’ll see if that tune carries all the way to Blagojevich’s ears.

Just one more thing that the left can whine, cry and deny that it matters. Can we fast forward to November please?

I hope he does sing, a long song. I’ll admit I’ve never liked that liberal govornor, Blagojevich. Maybe a verse or 2 about Barry as well.

Rezko probably decided that if it was OK for Jeremiah Wright to throw Barak Obama under the bus to maintain his street cred with Black Nationalist supporters, it was OK for Tony to put a few more tire treads across Obama body to save his own skin.

I keep watching for anything, anything at all, to show up on the news here in CA about Rezko and the trail. Nothing but crickets…
Is it being “saved” for later? With all the Rev. Wright fun, is the Rezko stuff being held back? Something to bring out when (if?) Rev. Wright ever decides to shut up?
Inquiring minds…

The Republican Party is basically dead in the state of Illinois because of the incompetence of the State Party Leaders and Candidates. Mayor Dailey and Governor Blagojevich are the 2 most corrupted politians in State history. There is no reason why those 2 A-Holes should be in office!

Mayor dailey and governor blagojevish are the 2…………. Nah I would add a third. Will we be able to hear about all the deals they made to get him in office? Or will they make a deal to shut him up?

As an aside:
Supposedly, the IL assembly is investigating impeachment against the Gov based on the outcome of the trial since earlier this week the state Senate voted down placing a recall amendment on the November ballot. The amendment was designed to go after Blago, but additions were made to go after other elected officials.
It passed in the House.
Emil Jones, Senate President and Barak’s mentor – and the guy who slapped Bam’s name on all the legislation Alan Colmes keeps mentioning, worked very hard to get the recall amendment killed.
Go figure.
He wrangled enough support from other Chicago-area dems to deny the amendment the 36 votes required (it got 33).
If Rezko bleeds out, Blago is finished.
Unfortunate that Emil denied the Illinois voting public of the option to throw out the rest of the trash.
BTW – Bam endorsed Blago, Daley and the rest of the crooks running the city, county and state governments.

Maybe they need to have “Govenor’s Row” in prison now. Blago can join Ryan in federal prison. I lived in the Chicago ‘burbs for 12 years, and I couldn’t believe how corrupt politics was in that state. I actually crossed party lines and voted for George Ryan’s democratic opponent because of how corrupt the guy was. I think it might be the only time I’ve voted democrat for anything. He would have been a much better governor than Ryan was.

Pat Fitzgerald will be the only US Attorney to toast two Governors, to my knowledge. And he prosecuted and conviced Ramzi Youseff of the first WTC bombing.

I bet Obamba is sweating bullets right now and praying that Rezko takes a page from Debra Palfrey’s book….

I live in IL, I’d let Rezko walk if it snagged Blago.

Any chance of any of this stuff implicating Obambi?

This is getting so bad, I think Louisiana and New Jersey are laughing at us in the Land of Lincoln (alternative state motto as once selected by John Kass – “Illinois, will the defendant please rise”)

Oh I hope Rezko takes down the whole lot of them…Obama, Jones, Stroger, even Daley. This state is rotten to the core, Republican and Democrat. Its all about kick backs for your buddies and screw the taxpayers. I hope they all end up in cells next to Ryan. It’ll never happen the judges are all bought and paid for too.

If Rezko takes down the whole lot of them…Obama, Jones, Stroger, Daley and ass-ociates…I would even donate a few Pesos to Rezko’s assistance…I will also take back all the nasty comments I wrote about Patrick Fitzgerald!
