The conspiracy-theory petard Update: Lee believes Wright’s HIV conspiracy theory, too
posted at 9:09 am on May 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Rev. Jeremiah Wright likes to spout conspiracy theories from the pulpit, including his allegation that the US government created HIV to commit genocide against people of color. Maybe he’ll find it complimentary to be accused of being a part of a conspiracy against Barack Obama. Spike Lee wondered aloud whether someone has paid Wright to wreck Obama’s campaign while telling the former Trinity United pastor to spike the speaking tour:
Director Spike Lee has waded into the ongoing controversy surrounding Jeremiah Wright, the Chicago pastor whose provocative statements have proved a thorn in the side of Democrat frontrunner Barack Obama. Lee advises the preacher to do the right thing and keep quiet. “The more he opens his mouth, the more damage he does,” he told the Guardian yesterday.
For good measure, Lee hinted at a political conspiracy behind Wright’s recent, contentious attempts to justify his remarks. “It looks like he’s being paid to keep talking,” he said. …
“Jeremiah Wight needs to be quiet,” Lee said yesterday. “If he loves Obama he needs to shut up right now. It makes me question his motives for talking. I’m starting to wonder whether somebody has been contributing to the building funds of his church. Seriously.”
Lee, whose best-known films have frequently tackled the issue of race relations in the US, believes that Obama had hoped to survive the presidential contest without talking about race. “But now he’s been forced to – by a combination of Jeremiah Wright and the Clintons,” he said.
As conspiracy theories go, Lee’s qualifies as one of the more strange. In order for this to be true, Obama’s pastor for 20 years would have to have reached an agreement with the Clintons to blow Obama out of the water. Never mind that Wright has been preaching a rather extreme form of Afro-centrism for two decades, and that he has publicly lambasted the Clintons on several occasions. Why would the Clintons have waited until March to light the fuse on this bomb? Wouldn’t it have made more sense to spring the Wright Stuff on Obama in December, just before the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary, the latter of which Hillary won by a teardrop?
Still, in the grand scheme of things, it’s no stranger than Wright’s own HIV allegation or the laughable theory that the CIA flooded American streets with crack cocaine to enslave black men. Like all conspiracy theories, it lasts only as long as the first rational look at its support and its implications. In this case, Lee doesn’t even provide the why that more resilient paranoid fantasies exist to answer. Why would Wright sell out to the Clintons? Just for the money? Wouldn’t he have done better with Obama in the White House for eight years?
Lee provides other laughable moments in this interview. When pressed for the reason he supports Obama in the election, Lee says that Obama is a “unifier” who will “change everything” about America’s standing in the world. Lee apparently doesn’t read headlines outside of the Village Voice. Pro-American politicians have won election in Western democracies over the last two years, including France, Germany, Italy, and if the regional elections yesterday give any indication, the UK, too. Eastern Europe has remained pro-American. Lee also gives no concrete examples of Obama’s “unifying” efforts, but in that, he’s no worse than the Obama campaign itself.
Update: Reader Carl F dug through the archives to find this 1993 NY Times profile of Charlie Rose, which reports that Spike believes the Wright conspiracy thinking on HIV as well:
It is when a guest takes the compliments seriously, not an uncommon susceptibility in public life, that celebitis sets in. No ego is so bloated that Mr. Rose cannot puff it up further. “You’re a living, breathing, bright person with opinions,” he told Ms. Arnold. “You couldn’t do this if you weren’t a sensitive person.” She did not disagree. “I’m an artist,” she announced.
Turning to her husband, he asked, in tones that he had applied the night before to the situation in Bosnia, “Tell me what it is about Tom Arnold that brings the two of you into harmony.” Mr. Rose received the self-promoting grievances of Spike Lee with reverent mien, and although he indicated he had doubts about the movie director’s theory that AIDS had been concocted by the white establishment to kill off black and Hispanic people and homosexuals, he did not get adversarial about it.
Well, of course not. We couldn’t have the media debunking paranoia and irrational thought, could we?

Wright needs to shut up and quit telling that he was Obama’s spiritual leader for 20 years…shut up and quit telling people what Wright really thinks…shut up and quit telling people who Obama really is…the truth cannot be discussed, it is just to painful for the left.

The fact that he realizes that Jeremiah Wright’s rhetoric is damaging is enough to make me view Spike Lee in a positive light. This is probably an indicator of my extrmely low opinion of Hollywood. I am surprised that anyone on the inside of that industry would disagree with the Reverend. Nonetheless, good for Spike Lee, conspiracy theorist or not.
joewm315 on May 2, 2008 at 9:21 AM
Wright’s advancement of his own celebrity is much more important than the cause of putting a black man in office.
That Spike Lee would not see that is ridiculous. Wright doesn’t need to be paid to keep flapping his mouth.

“… the US government created HIV to commit genocide against people of color.”
Oh yeah, the Govt is soooooo smart that they can mix up a batch of ‘darkie-killer’ and spread it around through an STD but they’re soooo stupid that they never stopped to think about the disease being spread to the white population through interracial relationships??? Like they’ve never heard Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings.
Why would Wright sell out to the Clintons?
Maybe Hilpatine threatened to ‘Vince Foster’ him.

My conspiracy theory is the New York Knicks have gone straight to hell in the front office and on the court since they started letting Spike Lee become the celebrity face of the franchise with those front row, $1,000 seats. Makes just as much sense than anything else Spike’s thinking about Rev. Wright being a covert plant by Hillary or the Republicans (and if it’s the latter, Karl Rove must have been damn good to use his evil time machine to send Rev. Wright back into the past to befriend Barak Obama in 1986 so he could betray him 22 years later).

You kid, but these people think 9/11 was an ‘inside job’ and that hurricane Katrine was ‘directed’ into the black population and the levies were ‘blown up’ ahead of the storm.

Why are Wright’s motives hard to figure out? If Obama is elected President, that means Obama got at least half of America’s white vote. Half. In Wright’s universe that just can’t happen. It’s like asking Al Gore to grab a thermometer, step into a time machine, and then come back to report the future temperature. I think Al would rather sabotage the time machine.
RBMN on May 2, 2008 at 9:32 AM
My theory is far less complicated than Mr. Lee’s. Basically it revolves around Rev. Wright being a certifiable a-hole
Mike Honcho on May 2, 2008 at 9:32 AM
Tony –
They already know about Karl Rove’s weather machine, which brought Hurricane Katrina down on New Orleans to kill black people. They just haven’t found out yet about Rove’s time machine, or his most diabolical invention, Karl Rove’s matter transporter, which is really how Bush, Cheney and the neocons got the explosives into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. But the Loose Change folks or some other 9/11 truther will figure it out sooner or later.

Spike Lee, Affirmative Action’s answer to Cecil B. DeMille, has recently discovered that the same secret government department that infected the Black community with AIDS also created the cyborg known as Reverend White. The cyborg was programmed with speeches taken from WV’s Senator “Crazy Horse” Byrd, Adolph Hitler, MC5 and Malcom X, and set loose to visit Islamic fascists and imitate White marching bands on the MSM stage.
Spike Lee has also uncovered a time machine that was used by Republicans to go back into time and rewrite the landslide events of Obama getting elected as the US President, and finally bringing “Hope” and “Change” to the world. All of these clues came together for Lee while he was cheesing with ex-Black, impeached ex-President Clinton on W.132nd in Harlem.

Spike does not understand this theorizing makes it less likely white swing voters will vote for Barack. The last thing any black candidate needs is people not associated with him racially demagogouing every criticism, or negative thing that happens. White people do not want to be beaten over he head as racist because a black candidate is being treated like any other candidate. Same goes for victimhood, white people just aren’t buying it. Too many white people have middle class black neighbors/coworkers that have college degrees, take care of their family, and do not subscribe to the victimhood. The jig is up.

Spike Lee has it backwards. According to “Black Kos”, Wright’s behavior was a noble act, saving his beloved Obama from any more harm by doing what the pious Barack couldn’t… distance himself from Wright. So it was a calculated, noble, act of a great man so that Obama, and thus America, can be saved.

Spike is fearful that the more Rev Wright opens his trap, the more damage is done to Obama. Much truth to that statement; however, every time a whiny black Liberal (esp. a Hollywood Liberal) opens their trap, the same results can be expected. Spike needs to shut his trap also.
Wasn’t it Spike Lee who went into a political rant (full on BDS) while visiting the booth at a Monday night NFL game?

Pretty smart move on Spike’s part, I think…throwing the theory out there for people to ponder over. Because we all know this is a something the Clinton’s are perfectly capable of doing…even if it is doubtful they could actually have pulled it off.

Spike sees conspiracies everywhere. He’s the guy who believes that Navy SEALs blew up the levees in N’awlins, so that land developers could get rid of all the black people. Apparently, he thinks some of our bravest and most honorable spec ops troops would actually obey such an order. Hardly. Besides, we kinda need our SEAL teams in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the other fronts of the current war.

Does anyone find it just a wee bit unusual that Rev. Wright has not been heard from since Obama hoofed him in the nether regions?
Syd B. on May 2, 2008 at 10:11 AM
I’m not really convinced Lee literally thought Wright was involved in a conspiracy. It just seemed like he was expressing his annoyance using an expression similar to, “What, are you getting paid every time you say ‘miniature golf course’?”
OneGyT on May 2, 2008 at 10:12 AM
Yea, strange isn’t it? Obama said some things that should have riled him up, yet we’ve heard nothing.

The purpose of conspiracy theories is to pin whatever bad thing you want onto the enemy of your choice. Obama’s black. Wright is black. The Clintons are white. QED.

Strange? Nah.
Obama dis’ed Wright first. Then Wright dis’ed Obama back. Then Obama dis’ed Wright back harder. So now Wright has to decide; hit’m again, or go sulk for a while.
Obama’s blunder was dumping Wright and his theology to save his (Obama’s) own skin politically. Had Obama made the case that he didn’t agree with that line of thinking, but he ‘respected’ people who held that view, and would try to ‘reach out’ to them in an attempt to bring them into the main stream Obama would have people fainting at his rallies again.

Both of which I’m sure Spike Lee agrees. He most likely agrees with Wright’s entire cannon. He just wants him to shut up so Brother Barak can get into position to really stick it to the white man.
I read an article a long time ago (1990s?) where Spike Lee and Eddie Murphy (among others) spewed this kind of garbage. I’ve tried to find it but it doesn’t show up on google.

Spike is a great filmmaker-love or hate his politics and afro-centric paranoias, he has done some great work. I’m not surprised that he sees conspiracy and collusion involving Rev. Wright being paid off by someone to take down Obama. I thought so myself, and it was confirmed (for me) when HClinton suggested that the Republicans were behind it. That can only mean that the dirty is courtesy of Clinton Inc. “The Republicans” is the name she uses when she wishes to remain anonymous.

I still think it is a (poorly managed) bad cop, good cop scam.
Wright gets the message of hate out in the wild, and Obama follows with his smooth message of conciliation/unification, knowing all the while that the message is out there!
OldEnglish on May 2, 2008 at 10:53 AM
OldEnglish 10:53
Obama muffed his ‘good cop’ routine when he ran away from Wright and his theology. Had Obama defended Wright and Black Liberation Theology by saying people had a right to their opinions, and saying that he (Obama) didn’t hold those opinions then he would have the best of both worlds. He would have the support of that faction, and the support of the guilty white liberal.
That approach would run the risk of appearing to encroach on Rev Wright’s turf because he (Obama) would be contesting with Wright for the allegiance of the congregation. How Rev. Wright reacted to that pitch would be illustrative. Too late for that now, so we’ll never know.
Most probable explation; it ‘just happened’ because it was all reaction, and not thought through.
rockhauler on May 2, 2008 at 11:09 AM
And Michelle Obama, just like Spike Lee, Eddie Murphy, and many other wildly successful blacks gets to keep believing the “good” Rev. Wright’s schtick, with most of the US voting public none the wiser….well, that is the plan anyway.
funky chicken on May 2, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Agreed. that’s why I said it was poorly managed. Perhaps Obama panicked when even the MSM started to pick it up. As you said – not thought through.
OldEnglish on May 2, 2008 at 11:20 AM
There’s no reason to believe that Lee disagrees with Wright. He just wants him to be careful where he speaks which truth.
I think Do The Right Thing was a very well made movie. Most of Lee’s other movies are noticably flawed. But he got lucky with Right Thing and made a minor masterpiece.
snaggletoothie on May 2, 2008 at 12:05 PM
The political events have me reflecting upon the recent history of my fellow African Americans. And I’m not a Democrat or Obama supporter at all. But, it is quite apparent that we are our own worst enemy. Every effort put forth to further our cause and uplift our people has been undone by the actions of other Black folks. This is accomplished either through ignorance of pride, or through the manipulation of outsiders.
A man like Wright could not be directly influenced by the Clinton camp. But I would not put it past them to sway his advisers to push him in a particular direction. My wife and I have had first hand experience with this type of thing while working with Diane Feinstein in SF. Through manipulation of the fringe advisers and committee members, groups not wishing the project to succeed continually undermined our efforts. They would pay individuals to disrupt the meetings, institute inquirers designed to delay actions and generally create a non productive environment.
So while it may appear to an outrageous claim to some people. We are searching for reasons why a prominent Black man would purposely undermine the efforts of another Black man who is on the verge of making history. Especially when one knows the storm surrounding this story was dying down.

Its all about the house, people. The Rev. needs the money for his mansion. Electricity and servants don’t come cheap. Does anyone know what the greens fees cost for that lovely golfcourse in his back yard? Of course he got paid off. Barak did not have the money because of his kids’ ballet lessons or whatever it was that MO was complaining about the cost of. So the good Rev. had to sell out to the highest bidder. Am I the only one who cringes at the phrase “people of color.” My first response is what color are they? Green? Yellow? By calling minorities POC, it implies that caucasians are “white” in the sense of the color spectrum e.g. white as the background on this page. So then, caucasians should be called “people of all colors,” since white is the combination of all the colors of the spectrum. Run that one by Rev. Wright and see what he thinks.
Caucasians are a “people of color.” In keeping with the PC times, European caucasians should be refered to as “beige people.”
“People of color” is just poor grammar. The phrase should be “colored people,” but we know where that takes us. How about we stick to “minorities.”

Why would the Clintons have waited until March to light the fuse on this bomb?
They let the media do it. I remember HRC bringing up Rezko early in the game and got the eye of the media riveted on that for a news cycle or so, but then it was buried by other news. Actually, people like Sean Hammity have done the Clintons’ bidding with the Wright story. His ‘Stop Hillary Express’ had to stop because he had done such a good job bashing Obama for Her. BUT, Sean’s a “Great American”! ;-)
As for the conspiracy theory about AIDS being spread by the White Establishment…I read an article in SPIN magazine years ago about this very thing and I shamefully admit that I swallowed it; that was before I realized that I was really standing right of center. Most of the conspiracy theories are based on past actions of our government and/or the white majority in this country. A lot of people who witnessed or were victims of those acts are alive today. Some of them are in prominent positions within the Black community. So, when they see activity of a suspicious nature, it’s only natural to draw upon their life experiences. I for example still have vivid memories of my uncle’s funeral. Not just because he died at a young age, I was 6 and he was 28, but how and why he died. He was lynched by the local residence for the simple fact that he registered to vote. My father was 46 when he could finally register and vote without fear for his life. This is just a couple of examples of my life experiences that could lead me into the “Black Paranoia”. And while I don’t give credence to such stories, I feel by the comments posted here and elsewhere around the web. Some people are just reflections of the ideology they oppose. As well as exposing their ignorance of US History.
