Has the primary race impoverished the Democrats?

The DNC has fallen far behind the RNC in contributions for 2008, exacerbating a problem that began last year. At the moment, the Republicans have almost six times as much money in the bank as the Democrats, and continue to outraise them on a month-to-month basis. Why does the GOP lap the DNC every month? Everyone’s cash goes to the primary meltdown instead of the general election:
In an election year marked by jaw-dropping Democratic fundraising, one key political player isn’t so flush: The Democratic National Committee.
Despite record hauls by Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, the DNC has raised less than half the amount taken in by the Republican National Committee.
According to the latest Federal Election Commission reports filed through the end of March, the RNC had $31 million in cash on hand while the DNC had only $5.3 million. The RNC has raised $36.5 million this year while the DNC has raised $17.7 million.
The story was equally grim in 2007, when the RNC raised a total of $83 million to the DNC’s $50 million.
“The general election has started; we should we raising $15 million a month,” said one senior DNC official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The committee is raising less than $6 million each month.
The DNC has a rather extensive list of projects it has to fund. It has to stage the convention in Denver, which is where most of their money has already gone. They have to build the GOTV ground networks, an effort that they have started but are far from completing. An ad has been created that distorts the already-discredited “100 years of war” meme, which the Washington Post and Fact Check have dismissed as lies — but they don’t have the money to roll it out nationwide. They haven’t yet begun to fund the $19.2 million allowed for coordination with the presidential campaign.
The Republicans have fully funded their coordination commitee, and have progressed much farther on all fronts. The only remaining task for the GOP will be an ad campaign, which will have to wait until the Democrats actually select a nominee — and that may wait until August.
Where has the money gone? Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have sucked Democrats dry, and it appears that will continue for the next two months. The massive amounts of donations have left the DNC orphaned from what has been a record cycle for contributions. While the two candidates remain deadlocked, the passion, attention, and money all go to that battle at the expense of all others.
This leads to another question. Barack Obama has all but decided not to opt into the public-financing system he champions, convinced of his ability to raise money in a general election. Will there be any money left to raise? The prodigious amounts being raised now may not be a renewable resource, and the DNC’s woes strongly indicate a that the well could run dry. Obama may discover that the primary effort has exhausted Democrats, and that opting out of public financing might actually put him at a disadvantage. He may have to spend more time fundraising than campaigning, to the detriment of his message in the fall.
Small wonder Howard Dean wants commitments from superdelegates by the second week of June. That leaves him eight weeks to raise enough money for the DNC to overcome months of failure. The aroma of desperation has begun to hover over Denver, and over Dean, and over the Democrats.

Doesn’t he have a history of squandering money? A few weeks ago I had read that behind the scenes, people were infuriated that there is no money..

This was just one of the great reasons for Operation Chaos. Divert money that could otherwise be spent bashing McCain with classy ads to bashing each other over the head. Go go gadget Chaos!

Hillary’s been less than spendthrift with her coin as well.

My heart bleeds for them.

Just when the Democrats need money the most, their pals in the MSM are convincing everyone that we’re in a recession and they must save every penny they can for gas and food. Go to it, guys!

Yeah, but their congressional and senatorial committees are tens of millions ahead of ours, not to mention individual candidate fundraising, and the hundreds of millions unions will spend. Hopefully there are a few conservative billionaires who can match Soros’ 527 money.
We’d get killed on fundraising this cycle anyway, but I’m hoping one day the R’s will quit wasting all their frickin money on direct mail. I never give any way but online, and yet I get deluged with stupid letters that go straight in the trash. One guy I gave 25 bucks to in 2006 has probably sent me 30 dollars worth of mail by now.

I’m guessing the checks from Castro and Chavez bounced?

I wonder how many of the small (amount) donors to Obama realize that the DNC needs money too. Poltical newbies who are enthralled by his Barack-ness might be willing to send him cash but are they willing to back the machine that runs the show? Probably less-so.

Yeah I saw the Politico article this morning and immediately donated.

Has the primary race impoverished the Democrats?
–Economically or theocratically?
Has Gore’s global campaign impoverished the starving masses of people further?
Is the DNC the party of doom and gloom?

Maybe Howie can threaten to scream some more to bring in some cash.
OT: My view of HotAir in Firefox has suddenly gone from the standard frames view I’m used to, to a regular page view, which is quite confusing. It’s fine in IE, but I hate IE. Anyone have any idea what I can do to get the view back? I’ve tried several things and only succeeded in frustrating myself.
Thanks for any tips y’all can give me.

It could be hard to gin up the same type of fervor during the general election as it has up to now to get people on the left to open their wallets for purely ideological causes — not just because Obama has been shown to be a little less than the messiah they hoped for and Hillary a little more willing to do evil things like go on Fox News, but because it’s going to dawn on the left more and more in the coming months that George W. Bush isn’t running for re-election.
Much of the willingness of the small donors to open their wallets, checkbooks and debt cards has been because of their pathological hatred of Bush. It’s going to be hard to get them up to the same level of passion for John McCain, though the demonization efforts will be out in full force to convince them that a McCain election means Bush, Cheney and Rove will be sleeping in the Lincoln Bedroom (this of course, doesn’t apply to someone like Soros, who’s been throwing money at the candidates not out of any emotional reason but because he wants to have direct pipelines to the highest levels of the American government. George S is spending money in hopes of making a lot more starting in 2009).

That happened to me a couple of weeks ago. It seems to come and go. Right now I have Firefox 2.0.0.24 and it is working perfect.

Has happened to me several times. I’ve ended up restarting the browser after stopping it and letting it stay down for 2 minutes. That cleared it every time but once where I ended up rebooting the workstation.

I’m with Bikermailman. My first thought was that Operation Chaos is working as planned…

The DNC should whither up and die, just like jobs for illegal aliens.
madmonkphotog on May 2, 2008 at 10:37 AM
If brains and ideas are currency, the DNC is already bankrupt.

Do we mean this in a moral, intellectual, spiritual, or financial sense?
Oh, we’re talking about the Democrat Party? Must be financially then, as the other spheres have never held much currency for (D)’s, except as props to get votes with.

“Running on empty.”…How about fumes. The strange thing is, much of the media keeps on saying that the Repubs aren’t getting the contributions that are pouring in for Obama–even after the Wright story exploded, again. Could it be the the press is lying to us, again? Maybe it’s the ‘repeat until people believe it’ policy in action.
“Do we mean this in a moral, intellectual, spiritual, or financial sense?”
I would say all of the above. This doesn’t mean that the Republicrats are doin’ any better in any of those areas. Being the two cheeks of the political rump, these asses are merely the seat of all evils.

Tim Morgan, the RNC Treasurer, is a great guy. He’s also our family lawyer. I was talking to him a few weeks ago while handling some personal matters in his office. He said that he expects the RNC to be outspent by the Dims by about 4 to 1. He also said that the Republicans expect to win anyway. He had his best grin on when he said it.
