Voter to McCain: Did you call your wife a c*nt? Update: Questioner signed in as HuffPo contributor

Oh, the screeching, the wailing, the wall-punching outrage if a conservative had put a question this obnoxious to a Democrat. HuffPo, bless its withered heart, describes our interrogator as a “Baptist minister” but read further into their blockquote and you’ll see he’s a former campaign worker for Joe Biden. The peg here is an anecdote from lefty journo Cliff Schechter’s book, “The Real McCain,” alleging that Maverick once dropped this term of non-endearment on his wife in front of reporters. The story’s been circulating in nutroots circles for months, decked out in the trappings of a “legitimate” campaign issue to disguise its real purpose. They do the same thing when outing closeted gay Republicans, framing it as a question of hypocrisy when what they’re really after is the salacious public humiliation that comes with any sex scandal. Same with this: They’re hot to show that Maverick’s a prick and a bad husband, but rather than just circulate the story with that explicit goal, they adorn it with the stupid “substantive” pretext that it speaks to McCain’s temper, as if him acting boorishly towards his wife means he might fly off the handle one night as president and push the button. It’s their way of flattering their own supposed progressive virtue, just like when they pronounced themselves starved for policy questions after the 21st debate of the campaign.
The irony? If they wanted an insight into McCain’s temper, they got one. Click the image to watch and see if any buttons are pushed.
Update: Further to the point that if the ideological roles were reversed here the left would be having itself a conniption, imagine if the questioner had been affiliated with, say, Instapundit or MichelleMalkin.com.
In an interview with IowaPolitics.com, Parrish said his intentions were simple in posing the question to McCain. The former Joe Biden campaign worker stressed he is very concerned about the Republican presidential nominee’s temperament.
“We have a man whose temper can get the best of him,” Parrish said. “What I am worried about is his temper. Our country is in a serious crisis. This election is the most significant one since 1860. It appears America is asleep — so I stood up and asked the question.”
Parrish signed in as a Huffington Post contributor and was taking pictures at the town hall meeting.
Note that HuffPo itself excerpts portions of this story from Iowa Politics — and conspicuously leaves off just before the paragraph where IP identifies the questioner’s affiliation.

By the way, HuffPo commenters are treating the claim as a fact.
That’s just one example. So for future reference, HuffPo commenters now consider the claim as a substantiated, proven fact that can be used against McCain.

The problem with someone with a temper is the potential for him to lose self-control. Now, McCain is obviously aware that people are constantly baiting him to lose his temper, and he seems to always stay stoically calm. This, to me, makes the temper charge a non-issue. He clearly has tremendous self control, even if he is prone to fiery anger from time to time.
I for one like someone who can get angry, and wouldn’t trust someone who was emotionless. Righteous anger is a virtue, not a vice.
Nessuno on May 1, 2008 at 9:21 PM
As Hillary and Obama do, they don’t answer what has validity to it. Obviously he skipped to the next question with no remark. Also, he’s known for his temper. Give me a break.

How classless can the left get? They continue to surprise, but of course it’s their right to exercise free speech, no matter how insanely stupid the words may be.
McCain handled that very well. I don’t agree with many of his policies but I have the utmost respect for his ability to handle idiots like this nutjob. Too bad we don’t have video showing the moron that asked the question.

You’re suggesting that a question like that has validity to it? If the allegation were true, using the “c-word” makes someone less qualified to be President? Really?
Hollowpoint on May 1, 2008 at 9:29 PM
I’m getting a “we’re sorry this video is no longer available” message.
Buy Danish on May 1, 2008 at 9:31 PM
If there’s a serious belief that he did say something like this, then the questioner would have been better served by phrasing the question as “did you refer to your wife by a profane term for the vagina on (insert date & setting) or any other time?”
Dropping an ugly word like that in a public setting where there were likely children present in a question that made no sense was as nasty as it was pointless. Looking at the commentary on firedoglake which posted this video made me ill. Thankfully, McCain brushed this off calmly instead of performing an internal examination on the questioner with the microphone.

thekingtut on May 1, 2008 at 9:41 PM
Not one HuffPo poster 30 commenets deep into that thread thought the question was in poor taste. the comments ranged from ‘he didn’t answer the question” as ameripundit noted above to ‘why was the ‘pastor’ taken into custody, questioned and released?’. When a person asks such a derogatory and unusual question of a sitting US Senator, I think reasonable people would want to immediately know if that person was armed, deranged or a threat to the Senator, regardless of the Senator’s political affiliation.
Is differentiating between Liberals and Conservatives really as easy as saying Liberals generally are uncouth louts with no manners and Conservatives generally believe in polite civil discourse and treating people with some degree of respect?

McCain handled it well. It was a stupid question to ask, but he can ask it if he likes.
I like how the commenters at HuffPo are acting like the guy was dragged out by his feet and beaten. It’s a campaign event, not a park bench. If someone is there with the obvious intent of causing trouble I’d fully expect them to be removed. Same goes for an Obama of Clinton event.

And that question came from a Baptist Minister? What the heck is going on here?
All these so called “Reverends”, “Ministers” and even a priest are giving Christianity a bad name.
It was terrible question to begin with but to find out that it came from a man that is suppose to speak about Christ is an outrage, as is everything coming out lately.

wise_man on May 1, 2008 at 11:13 PM
He has already lost that bet, many times over.
Yes we were, and most of us found it out of bounds to ask any daughter about the indiscretions of their father.
Everyone just keep this kind of thing in mind the next time you hear a Democrat say “Republican dirty trick / tactics” or “Republican smear machine”. Nothing wrong with a honest and tough question, it’s not Republican’s fault that the Democrats don’t like answering them because the answer will turn away Indpendents. So Democrats have to lie or sensationalize.
But hey, if nothing is out of bounds, let’s ask Obama what was so wrong with him and his mother that forced his father abandonded them. Let’s ask Clinton if she is concerned that she will contract HIV or has she and Bill stopped having sex.
Hog Wild on May 1, 2008 at 11:19 PM

I agree - and frankly, I wish he’d gone just about ballistic on this one.
Liberals might not appreciate it … but every normal man in America would. I think in this case he should have let go of the self-control and said he what he was really thinking.
Professor Blather on May 1, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Pretty much.
Professor Blather on May 1, 2008 at 11:57 PM
You couldn’t be more wrong if you tried.
I guarantee that if an idiot conservative tosses that word at Hillary Clinton, not one of us would support it.
Free speech does not equal classless vulgarity. Or at the very least, free speech does not require the support of all kinds of speech.
The very essence of free speech is that when an idiot choose to use that right in such a loutish manner, the rest of us get to voice our own opinions on that idiocy.
Not one conservative blogger would “not complain” if this were done to Clinton or Obama. Not one.
Professor Blather on May 2, 2008 at 12:04 AM
I would not be so quick to assume that it has a mother. I believe it is much more probable that someone turned over a rock somewhere and gave what they found underneath a name.

How stupid can one get…not much more then these foolish character assassinations.
I could make the point that you can only find a few of these examples from a man fighting for citizen rights for dozens of years.
You have no idea about his “respect for women”. Even his ex-wife has nothing but positive things to say, and if anyone has an axe to grind it is an ex-wife.
You spend the time to find the quote, but you don’t attribute it to anyone…it wouldn’t be Patrick Leahy from the WaPo would it? Who Robert Sheer calls his close friend and colleague…Sheer has no conservatives as a close friend (as he admits)…Leahy should stick to writing about basketball players, his only other political writings have been hit pieces on Republicans.

I really could care less what he called his wife or whether she deserved it. What I do care about is that every time I get the guts to throw my conservative ideals under the bus and vote for McCain I catch a clip of him somewhere saying something that makes me want to barf. Last night it was a clip of him lamenting about illegals being Gods children and needing legal standing in this country.
This jerk evidently doesn’t care about American drywallers, brick layers, painters, framers, roofers, (the list goes on) that are loosing their jobs every day to illegals who will work for half the pay while living in their three families to a house residences and driving with no insurance while fathering litters of children who will (unbelievably) automatically become US citizens to inundate our already suffering school and welfare system.
Evidently the idea is that because these people are in need in their own failing country, middle America (not the politicians) are suposed to give up a portion of their well being to share with the illegal invaders.
Forget it McCain. I for one will sit out this election before submitting to your crap.

The fact that the leftists are making such pathetic attacks on McCain shows how little there is to attack him for. Especially from their point of view. On very big issues, he’s with ‘em, except foreign policy, where he’s a grown-up.

orlandocajun on May 2, 2008 at 11:20 AM
It seems to have escaped everyone’s attention that this is what happens when you don’t restrict admission to your events. The McCain campaign has made a big deal out of its policy of allowing anyone to attend these townhalls, in contrast to the Bush campaigns that gave out tickets only to identified supporters and had very tight security. They are stupid if they did not realize that was an open invitation to the nutroots to plant obnoxious questions like this. They would like nothing better than to trap McCain into a macaca moment. The problem is that whatever McCain may say in these townhalls will be buried by the media, who will only play the obnxious nutroots questions.
McCain needs to pull some jujitsu here and demand that Obama order his supporters to stop this “old politics” stuff.
