Video: “Republican Space Rangers”

Believe it or not, this actually comes from Grand Theft Auto IV as some sort of in-game feature viewable on one of the characters’ TVs. I’m supposed to be outraged but all I feel is fatigued: Nine, count ‘em nine, minutes in which no stereotype is left unturned, from redneck culture to killing furriners for fun to sublimated homosexuality to the obligatory schwanz-shaped rocket ship. It’s so over the top that it works as a parody of how leftists view conservatives, although of course that’s not the intent. Satire two levels removed is a tricky, subtle business, and whatever else GTA may be, it ain’t subtle. Which reminds me: The language here is exactly as nuanced as the rest of it so please observe this, your official content warning.

I made it to :58 before losing interest. This has already been done in a much less obnoxious way in Team America: World Police.

Did they actually just compare peaceful, forgiving aliens species to the insurgent terrorists in Iraq?

amerpundit on April 29, 2008 at 8:58 PM

I sorta resemble that video down here in Flyover Country. :)

Nine, count ‘em nine, minutes in which no stereotype is left unturned, from redneck culture to killing furriners for fun to sublimated homosexuality to the obligatory schwanz-shaped rocket ship.

Guess eight, count ‘em eight, years of Bush will do that to you. People are supposed to be outraged but, well, I guess they’re just fatigued.

The GTA reality is perfect, Ho’s, Hoods’s, drugs, killin’ cops, beatin’ innocents, stealin’stuff, no judgments other than your own self serving perversion….Obamas world ripe for the liberals who’s kos kidz are yanking their joy sticks in the basement media room! Sign me up for the 1st flight out…….

dmann on April 29, 2008 at 9:00 PM

*Sigh*

I remember playing Grand Theft Auto in a beta version that didn’t work too well on my computer. It kind of looked like “Spyhunter” version 2.1 and it kind of got silly after a while, but maybe because it didn’t work too well. Like I said, it was a beta version and not too many people had heard about it yet.

It couldn’t hold my attention for too long even when I was a college kid and enjoyed violent games. Looks like the game designer’s skills have improved, even if their maturity hasn’t.

rihar on April 29, 2008 at 9:01 PM

The makers of a game that encourages beating the prostitute you just effed in order to steal her money is making fun of me? Oh, my stars and garters!

Bad knockoff of “Ambiguously Gay Duo” from Saturday Night Live.

I hate when stupid lefty political crap gets shoved into other popular culture things I may enjoy. Oh well, the game still sounds great. I can laugh at the stupidity of it as I shoot the TV.

brak on April 29, 2008 at 9:02 PM

It just makes me sad that lefties will view that video and say: “Yep, f**kin Republican, fascist murderers.”

jimmy the notable on April 29, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Well, I know I always look for high-brow social and political commentary in video games about the rich, compelling lives of organized crime members.

I guess if this is the parody of Republicans, the city in which GTA takes place is the liberal utopia I’ve heard so much about.

Yeah, I’m sure 8 years of psychosis, 8 years of incessant, juvenile whining and feigning outrage over pretty much everything, and 8 years of putting your hands over your ears and yelling “Nyah nyah nyah war criminal nyah nyah nyah kyoto nyah nyah nyah etc” could probably get to be a little bit fatiguing.

I really feel for you bro. I also think you’re a moron, but even morons deserve a little love.

DaveS on April 29, 2008 at 9:14 PM

So, I guess that just means we need to have a democrat space rangers cartoon where they wantonly have unprotected gay and straight sex, kill babies right after their born as soon as their parents get tired of them (late term abortion), make friends with terrorists, punish parents with prison time for disciplining their children, sue and imprison anyone that says anything they don’t like, give their national sovereignty away to the United Nations, provide laws to protect child molestors, tax people into poverty, attack those that fight to save their lives and penalize and ridicule anyone caught worshipping a god that they don’t personally approve of, in writing and triplicate. Yeah, I could watch that.

Virus-X on April 29, 2008 at 9:16 PM

It’s absolutely nuts that they have full network programming for multiple in-game television channels in this game on top of all the radio stations. It’s also now the most expensive game ever made.

Typhonsentra on April 29, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Was that a news story on MSNBC or something? It’s hard to tell.

lorien1973 on April 29, 2008 at 9:19 PM

Wow. A game where you can shoot and kill innocent people and take their money, and then shoot cops when they come to arrest you, is making fun of republicans.

NOW it’s getting rough!

I wonder how the troops will take this, considering they play plenty of Video Games on their downtime(s) at the FOBs.

PresidenToor on April 29, 2008 at 10:04 PM

Well, this is especially irritating to me because the game was developed by Rockstar North, based out of Scotland.

It’s bad enough when Americans insult Americans, but it takes a special sort of arrogance to make this type of attack on political party in another country.

Nessuno on April 29, 2008 at 10:07 PM

The ironic thing is the whole concept of GTA sends your average violence-adverse, gun hating liberal Democrat into a torrent of legislative frenzy towards regulating or banning video games like this, under the believe that kids who play it are then going to go out and gun down or run over people in their neighborhood. So those who would enjoy the Republican-bashing segment the most are never going to buy the game in the first place.

jon1979 on April 29, 2008 at 10:08 PM

You can engage in homophobic smears as long as the targets are republicans?

tlclark on April 29, 2008 at 10:08 PM

You can’t really tell where GTA is going with some of these things. Is it a parody of the caricature of Republicans or is it a legit jab at us? Surf through the talk radio stations on San Andreas and Vice City…you’ll find parodies of all sorts of people. Hippies and Pat Robertson Types. Conservative Christian censorship fascists and stoned out libertarian types. You can’t really tell where the guys at Rockstar are on the political spectrum…and that’s the way it should be. In the end, though, stick with the music stations.

JetBoy on April 29, 2008 at 9:24 PM

As for the game clip- I can laugh at myself and those like me if it’s a good joke and/or not meanspirited. However that was just lame. They could at least take an equally lame shot at Dems if they’re going to pull that- why alienate a third of your demographic for the sake of something that stupid?

Heh. I’ve heard soldiers at Fort Polk singing variations of the theme song. Vigorously. They did it in Iraq too. Funny as hell.

Guardian on April 29, 2008 at 10:30 PM

I figured this game would be like that from the promotional website. Every single gag video and fake wanted poster contained similar humour. It’s not the slant of the humour I mind, it’s the glaring obviousness that makes it yawn-worthy.
Patriot Act= Jingoism Act. Subtle.
Character: “I get it, man! I’m all about the Second Amendment! Guns don’t kill people, video games do!” It’s not even close to Onion-level satire.
Luckily, you have the option of skipping all of that content and sticking to the storyline.

joewm315 on April 29, 2008 at 10:33 PM

Why on earth would you buy this crap? Kind of like why on earth would anybody pay good money to see Redacted or any of that other garbage?

Back when Andrew Sullivan was sane, lefties on chat boards like The Guardian (UK) and others used every anti-gay slur in the book to trash him. Now that he’s back on their side it’s a totally different story. They can do that because, y’know, lefties are the living embodiment of truth and justice so nothing they say or do is ever wrong.

Yeah. Oblivion was awesome, like all Elder Scrolls games. But we NEED a multiplayer sandbox MMORPG-type installment of it.

Also, best system? PC.

You can’t really compare PC gaming to console gaming. Two different experiences. I can’t say I like one better than the other, just depends on your mood.

It’s supposed to be a pretty good game, but if I ever play it I’ll make sure to refrain from watching that again. Is it possible that the satire is even more uninspired, weak, and hackneyed here than in ‘Lil Bush? I never thought I’d see the day.

Go back to the post. I spelled it correctly. But who cares? If “cluelessness” was measured by typos, there’d be plenty of clueless people here. I’ll give you the point, Rockstar probably leans pretty left. I was just trying to play Devil’s advocate. As for your assumption that all people that play Grand Theft Auto are clueless, see Madison Conservative’s post at 9:20 PM.

malan89 on April 29, 2008 at 11:28 PM

Oh, “misused” not “misspelled”. Well, I think that there are extremists on both sides that try to abuse the Government’s power to censor people. The definition of fascism is “a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control”, and that’s what government censorship is. I probably shouldn’t have used “Christian Conservative” as I guess I am a “Christian Conservative” because I’m Christian and a conservative (I know, GTA isn’t very Christian of me, but it’s still a fun game and I would be both morally opposed–and I’d probably pee my pants–if any of the activities in GTA played out in real life), but the point remains the same. People use Christianity to abuse the Government’s power. Just because I hold certain beliefs, doesn’t mean you should have to.

I have to admit it felt a little awkward standing in line in front of a cop at 1:00 this morning to buy Grand Theft Auto IV. It’s just kind of hard to see how a cop would appreciate it given how much sport the series makes of cop killing.

And, oh yeah, it’s an amazing game!!!1!!!

As for the politics of GTA, let me just say how astonished I was when the last few missions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (the last major release before GTA4) turned out to be filled with so much whiny, victim/grievance-mongering that Al Sharpton and Rev. Wright would have been proud.

jgapinoy on April 30, 2008 at 12:07 AM

The only video game I ever had was the Atari 2600, and I got bored with that really quick. Seeing this, I’m glad I prefered to be out playing baseball and having dirt clod fights with my friends when I was a kid. I just don’t get video games.

srhoades on April 30, 2008 at 12:10 AM

Well, I never really got dirt clod fights. We lived next door to some weird people in Michigan when I was eight. Their demented son used to put rocks in snowballs and hit me with them. I’ll take video games thank you.
This stuff is pretty par for the course for Rockstar. There’s a character in Vice City that was a pretty cheap knockoff on George W. Bush. It’s the same infantile leftist crap that’s infiltrated comic books too. I think I recall some Playstation 2 game that had you incarcerated in..get ready for it…Ashcroft Prison. I mean, in some ways, these guys are so creative. Some of the radio station chatter in the other games is hysterical; and there is a ton of stuff to do..no, it’s not all getting manual releases from hookers. It’s actually got quite a good driving model; you can customize your cars (at least you could in San Andreas; I wouldn’t know about GTA IV since those filthy rats didn’t release if for the PC) and just cruise around. That’s what i end up doing most of the time. The gang war stuff got kind of old but it’s always fun cruising the hood and listening to your custom radio station.
What really sucks is gaming only makes the headlines with stupid issues like this. The work that went into designing a city that looks frankly incredible; different neighborhoods; all the different car designs and performance modeling…gone. The game gets boiled down to some idiot cartoon they put in. Look what happened to Mass Effect…awesome game..I can’t wait til it hits on PC..I’ve played and finished almost every RPG that Bioware has done..and what gets it in the headlines? Some PG romantic cutscene.

austinnelly on April 30, 2008 at 12:20 AM

Oh, god. I couldn’t imagine GTA on the PC. Yuck! There are some games that are just meant to be played on one or the other. GTA is a console game, for sure.

Well, I never really got dirt clod fights. We lived next door to some weird people in Michigan when I was eight. Their demented son used to put rocks in snowballs and hit me with them. I’ll take video games thank you.

Dude, you have some deep scars, don’t you? I think that would mess up a lot of kids, but you should still go outside and play like a little kid once in a while. It’s fun.

The work that went into designing a city that looks frankly incredible; different neighborhoods; all the different car designs and performance modeling…gone.

I’m glad somebody else here appreciates the detail they put into these games. If you like realistic car/city models, check out the two “The Getaway” games. Sick.

malan89 on April 30, 2008 at 12:34 AM

In true GTA fashion as soon as this event pops up either in the theater or on tv, i’ll whip out my AK-47 and shoot the tv or the theater and snidely laugh.

Yeah this is obviously one part of the game i won’t care to watch

Defector01 on April 30, 2008 at 12:41 AM

I’ve played GTA on a PC as well as on consoles. It works good either way, really, but there’s no denying that a keyboard and mouse arrangement simply gives you more control than a gamepad. It just does.

But I’ll still always prefer sitting on my couch, so the PC loses in that comparison.

Kensington on April 30, 2008 at 12:42 AM

I really dont understand how people who make a game all about sex drugs stealing and killing people for no real reason can come up with something like that.

It’s exactly like the cartoon propaganda that Palestinian terrorists use to characterize Jews to their children. It drips with hatred for anything that’s patriotic or conservative.

It’s full of calls for “peace” too. That was the Soviet propagandist’s favorite word–peace. The peace of fear and submission.

If we had one of the consoles that they made this game for, I’d probably ask for it for Christmas. As it is, I just finally got my Wii (and my shoulder hurts bad from tennis), so I won’t be playing GTA anytime soon.

I haven’t watched the video yet (my kids are right here and all), but I don’t see the purpose in getting all worked up about it. I’ve been playing video games my entire life; I’ve completely separated game content from my political beliefs. Sure, some of the games are mindlessly violent, but it’s nice to take a break.

the goddess anna on April 30, 2008 at 10:43 AM

The violence isn’t the problem. It’s just annoying when you spend good money on something only to be mocked by it.

Team America: WP
The greatest movie ever made. After Beerfest of course.

My thoughts Exactly!

Yeah, I agree with that. I tend to tune stuff like that out. I’m pretty used to being mocked, though.

I wish I could. I try sometimes, but it still bugs me. My husband’s insistence that it’s not that big of a deal doesn’t help, considering his political views are never insulted.

Maybe I’ll just develop thicker skin soon.

Which is exactly why the men who are top game developers and publishers live in mansions and fly 1st class. You happily fund their lifestyle and their “art” that mocks you.

Conversely, leftists NEVER separate themselves from their politics so that they can enjoy the finer nuances of a Norman Rockwell painting or Ted Nugent song.

If they make a good product, they should be wealthy. No matter the political content, the GTA series is a good product.

The thing is, we’re always called the party of the rich people. If that’s really true, why is everything slanted against us? Why don’t we have our own George Soros funding our propaganda?

Esthier on April 30, 2008 at 11:49 AM

I humbly submit you consider the source and their product.

It all makes sense when you perform this simple act.

jcrue on April 30, 2008 at 11:58 AM

This is a game that is not World of Warcraft. Hence it doesn’t matter.

TheUnrepentantGeek on April 30, 2008 at 11:59 AM

Expelled by Ben Stein is a good product, but it isn’t doing well at the box office and likely won’t be profitable for years. Sicko and F9/11 made millions–partly because of republican curiosity seekers and /or those who would say “I need to watch this so I can comment on it.” A Leftist will never do that for Expelled.

You’re funding the political content of people that hate you at the expense of raising your children in a caustic, hostile, and pathetic world that you helped create.

why is everything slanted against us?

Because so many of “us” want to claim a victory for tolerance of all viewpoints and separate ourselves from the content of games, movies, music, plays, and art from our political beliefs. A Leftist absolutely will not ever do that but KNOWS YOU WILL. The communist truly has sold the capitalist the rope with which to hang himself.

Why don’t we have our own George Soros funding our propaganda?

Soros isn’t funding GTA, Li’l Bush, or any of the hundreds of popular Web comedy videos, movies, songs, and TV shows with an anti-Republican slant…

you are.

It’s a decent product, but not even Creationists are arguing that it’s good.

The Passion of the Christ was a good product, and it did well.

The Left Behind movies are not good and have not done well.

I haven’t seen Moore’s last two films, but I did see one that countered his. Obviously more than just my dollars are funding these projects.

1. I haven’t yet bought the game. I will (or at least my nonconservative husband will), but I haven’t yet. It’s going to break records no matter what I do, because it’s a good game. I didn’t buy the last one, or GTA 3, 2 and one, but that didn’t stop them from making millions. Republicans don’t deserve to miss out on good things simply because of their political beliefs.

2. I don’t watch Lil Bush and have no reason to believe it’s a good product. I don’t watch anti-Republican shows, but I do watch shows that sometimes bash Republicans even though they are not political programs. There is simply too much of the later to never watch any of them.

3. As far as music applies, again, if it’s good, it’s good. The Right does not have any great bands. At best, we’ve got some that are so-so. I’m not going to pull a hissy fit and deny myself the chance to listen to good music because of my beliefs. I’m only hurting myself, as the artists won’t feel the loss of my cash.

The only way to actually change anything is to set up our own alternative, which, as I just pointed out, no one seems willing to do.

So your options leave us with sticking our fingers in our ears in hopes of never been offended again and missing out on great products to spite someone who will never notice.

Seems pointless to me. I don’t buy video games because of my politics.
