Press conference: Obama shocked, shocked at Wright’s behavior; Update: Video added; Update: Q&A highlights added

Imagine his surprise at finding that his spiritual mentor of 20 years is a preening, hateful, attention whore. I missed the beginning so I don’t know yet if he did indeed disown the man he could no sooner disown than disown the whole black community. Video is coming; in the meantime, the boss is liveblogging. Sound off below.
Update: Here’s his statement, slightly edited for brevity. I have to go back and see if there’s anything worthy in the Q&A; if there is, I’ll update with more vid. Ace reports that Pope Andrew, shill of shills, has already pronounced St. Barry redeemed, so let the word go forth and the healing recommence. The bottom line: After 20 years of friendship, if Obama didn’t know Wright held these beliefs he’s a moron and if he did know he’s a fraud.
Link: sevenload.com
Update: Can’t remember if it’s in the Q&A or in the clip I posted, but at some point in discussing Trinity Obama mentions how wonderful the new pastor, Otis Moss, is compared to Wright. Here’s a little flashback for you from last month, of Moss equating the media’s criticism of Wright with a lynching. Exit question: Where exactly does that analogy leave Obama now?
Update: Speaking of people Sullivan shills for, remember when TNR broke the news about Ron Paul’s neo-confederate newsletters? The big knock there wasn’t that Paul necessarily held those views himself but that his carelessness in letting them be published under his name called his judgment and competence into question. How is this any different? Unless someone wants to argue that Wright’s militancy is something he came to only recently, then Obama somehow spent 20 years in the pews without ever noticing that his preacher wasn’t particularly fond of America, white people, “Zionism,” etc etc. Exactly how many sermons did he miss?
Update: Geraghty asks the question of the hour: What’s Wright’s move now?
Update: Rich Lowry speculates that Obama’s team must have some awfully bad polling numbers on Wright to warrant this spectacle today. Jon Ham, North Carolina resident and father of Mary Katharine, says he got a call just last night. Last week’s numbers from Survey USA: Obama by nine. Today’s numbers: Obama by five.
Update: I was planning to track down the “white folks’ greed runs a world in need” quote but the Standard beat me to it. Read Obama’s own account of Wright’s “Audacity of Hope” sermon to see for yourself how plausible it is that he didn’t know Wright spoke this particular brand of “truth” to power.
Update: Here are the highlights from the Q&A, in quick-hit, heavily edited form. Wright’s insinuation that Obama only pretends to disagree with him to preserve his electability — which is itself, of course, highly damaging to Obama’s electability — is a predictable sore spot.

Or does it show that the NC GOP ad was exactly right, and devestatingly effective, in calling the minister and Bambi too extreme, and questioning how any NC politician who endorses Bambi could possibly share NC values?
And here I thought it was a stretch. A tenuous link. Six degrees of separation and all that.
The ad says “He’s just too extreme for North Carolina.” It doesn’t say “He’s just too extreme for the white people of North Carolina, but the blacks see nothing wrong with him.”
How in the world is Wright a caricature of the black community’s aspirations? How stereotypical is it to assume that Wright represents their aspritions, or that they all have the same aspirations? Wright does not represent all blacks, and an attack on Wright is not an attack on black churches, or blacks, and neither is an attack on Obama. Just because one black guy says crazy crap does not mean all black people agree. Just because one black politician is a Marxist idiot with lunatic associations not mean all black people are.
Man, the condescension and stereotyping are truly breath-taking. All blacks think Bambi is their hero? And it does offer something in Obama’s place – the GOP.
Your reaction/analysis of that ad says more about you than the ad. Embarrassing.

I wondered that myself but it would have been hard for Clinton to do with a Sister Soljah poster hanging up in his bedroom for 20 years and attending all of her concerts.

BO is in trouble and he knows it. No matter how much the media tries to spin for him it can’t change the fact that now he’s shocked. Are you kidding me? The sound bites that have been circulating for weeks didn’t shock you but a calm and calculated response from Wright explaining the context of the rants does?
That does NOT pass the smell test! I love watching this loser squirm!

My only fear is that the derailment has come too soon.
And I’ve been sooo up in the air on who would be better to run against: BHO, with the good Rev, Ayers, Dohrn, et al, to help bring him down, or HRC, the single most unifying force that Conservatism knows.
At least things will still be chaotic for a while over there…
JamesLee on April 29, 2008 at 3:56 PM
I think the person that suggested Wright was deliberately creating a situation that would allow Obama to disown him, hit the nail on the head. It’s the logical explanation–not that Wright is ruled by logic– but it is hard to imagine he would want to end Obama’s race.
The problem was already causing damage with or without his recent speeches. It would have killed his run in the fall. Perhaps this was a crazy gamble to turn it around. The way firefighters sometimes use explosions to stop a forest fire.

Fear not, for Huckabee will defeat Hillary. He knows the skeletons in the Clinton’s Arkansas closet. He had to clean up the mess they left behind. (And Hillary has the gall to claim that she would have to clean under the oval office rug after President Bush leaves office!)

Someone refresh my memory here…what was the Department of Defense project that used data mining to “connect the dots” between terrorists and other individuals? If I remember correctly, someone higher up killed the program, claimed it never existed, and ruined the careers of anyone who talked about it.
It sounds to me like the program was too successful, and revealed Marxist/Socialist/Communist connections within our own government.
I still think it odd that Obama and a Republican Senator spent three hours talking to the Russians…

So where is the eloquent orator that packs stadiums across our great land? It’s hiding somewhere in a teleprompter. Obama looks like a beaten husband, like a tired man, not like a great and charismatic leader.
It’s so refreshing to hear Obama speak without the hooting and hollering of a bunch of starstruck lemmings. This is just one view of a potential Obama presidency.

Wright’s statement that Obama’s criticism of him was just political posturing is the first thing out of Wright’s mouth that has the ring of truth! And that’s why Barry has to dump him now, because he is becoming the most dangerous kind of Democrat there is… a loose cannon that starts accidently telling the truth instead of spinning the party-line lies.
Remember what your parents said about how telling the truth is easier because then you don’t have to remember what lie you told to who? That’s why Barry keeps changing his tune… he is juggling a LOT of lies!

Not going to play. You’ve already amply demonstrated to me your inability to understand even the simplest logical distinctions, alongside an insistence on cramming my posts into your pre-conceived categories.
For instance, I describe Wright as a “caricature,” but you proceed immediately to take me to task for suggesting he’s “representative.” A caricature is an exaggerated or false representation. As anyone with High School-level reading comprehension and no chip on his shoulder should understand, my use of the term indicates that I do not consider Wright a true or fair representative of the black community’s aspirations. Indeed, that’s my point. However, he has been called a leader; he ran one of the largest black churches in the country; he has been the focus of attention in the news; he postures as a learned observer and commenter on religious, cultural, historical, and political affairs; he’s the pastor to a man who receives 90% of the black vote whose possible loss of the nomination is supposed by many to be likely cause of anguish and even violent revolt among African Americans. If only it was Shelby Steele or Thomas Sowell dominating the news instead of Jeremiah Wright, then all Americans, including especially African Americans, would have reason to be proud of how far we’ve come in race relations.
I’m not going to write a book taking apart your posts piece by piece. I request that you conduct yourself civilly, and either ignore my posts or try to think them through before you pounce on them.

One of my biggest concerns. My stepfather was in military intelligence during the cold war and told of how the Soviet Union would hand pick children and groom them from the time they were infants to infiltrate the enemy when they were grown. The children were taught several languages by the government so they could be fluent as adult spies. Pretty amazing stuff.

Out of the two of them, Wright and Obama,Obama is the most radical. BHO’s semi-divestiture of Wright has, however, helped him politically in the long run. Forgiving voters will eventually come back to his camp. The only fly in the ointment is if Wright launches a devastating counter-attack.
I’ll say it again. Going to Wright’s church for 20 years and being his disciple puts Obama in the position of either being stupid, dihonest or both.
MaiDee on April 29, 2008 at 4:57 PM
Ever wonder why it is that liberals are only able to acknowledge evil, once evil has struck them directly. It’s like they don’t have the intelligence to think three-dimensionally.
I watched Obama’s Q&A and I believe he’s sincere in his condemnation of Wright today. It doesn’t absolve him from his poor judgment in associating with him for the past 20+ years. I want a President who has a well developed sense of danger and intent BEFORE the evil has been able to materialize. Obama has not demonstrated this type of intelluctual instinct. As bad as Hillary is, she at least seems to understand evil when she sees it. Jeeze, where do the DEMS get these people!

You know what bugs me most about this whole thing?
Wright says “God damn America” and implies that America got what it deserved on 9/11….
And that makes him the crazy old uncle in the attic that Obama can’t disown.
Wright implies that Obama’s a politician that says what he needs to in order to get elected…
And suddenly there are prime time press conferences to knock Wright down.
I want my president to care more about my country than he does about his own image and that just doesn’t seem to be the case with Obama.

This is not quite fair, since this issue is not exactly about beliefs. It’s about how you express those beliefs and it’s about loyalty. The bottom line is that Rev. Wright is utter trash without even the vestige of honor which would prompt any normal human being not to injure Obama’s presidential bid. I’m sure Obama is surprised and dismayed to discover this. After so many people have put faith in all sorts of gutter level leaders, like Ted Kennedy or Trent Lott or any muslim religious leader, any cult leader, and way too many CEO’s, I don’t think we can blame Obama for his misfortune here.
On the other hand, I will admit to some joy in seeing Obama having to say what he needs to say about Rev. Wright.

He could not do that during the last debate.
F15Mech on April 29, 2008 at 6:21 PM
No, I don’t think your concerns are baseless.
What fogs up attempts to ferret out the “Bill Ayers” profile is the lack of a clearly defined “Soviet Union” to act as their magnet. Yes, China recruits and succeeds at planting technology spies, but they don’t attract the old revolutionaries in the way that the Soviets did back 20 years ago. China buys people to steal our weapons technology, and greases the hands of politicians controlling trade agreements. It’s more about business deals, hacking and their military strength with their government.
The maneuverings of foreign powers who work to exercise influence through our citizens are far more complex now. They use the media, the markets and the internet as much as people, and these tools don’t require a US citizen. As far as using the old-style revolutionaries; they don’t have to hide out anymore. Revolutionary programs have become mainstream experiences. Old Marxists tend to hang out in universities and write books that will have little impact. They promote their ideologies in classes and letters to the editor; but no one pays much attention unless they get elected to the Senate.
However, Maoists are more involved in high profile activists groups. Some Maoists, like Bill Ayers, succeeded in burrowing their way into major institutional changes. He “leads” the reform of the American educational system. I fear that his successful campaign could have catastrophic results in the future. In fact, I’ll change the word “could” to “will” if some aggressive actions don’t take place in the near future.
Of course, most of these Marxist /Maoist types don’t look for leadership from Russia and China, the old Communist powers; but rather to new alliances in the Middle East, Asia or South America. It’s a constantly shifting network. They think to destroy the infrastructure by using jihidist or Black Nationalist groups to do their dirty work. Whether they think to continue the alliance afterwards should they succeed, is unknown.
A good place to track their activities is by relaying on the old principle: Follow the money. Which organizations are funded by hostile foreign groups and what individuals receive their grants? That’s why radicals fight the government gaining the right to examine large money transactions. It’s a dead giveaway.
Our present situation is often quite alarming. We face a catch 22 when attempting to prevent hostile countries from forming alliances with our own citizens. The very nature of our democracy enables hostile groups to openly pursue their goals.
It’s not news about the obvious culprits who enable the situation: our media, our entertainment industry, our academics, and our lawyers. Their irresponsibility has morphed out culture into a breeding ground for anarchists and revolutionaries. We know we face an epidemic but can do very little to prevent its growth.
If the general population is no longer able to define and recognize the actions of a “traitor”; how can they be rooted out of positions of influence? Symptomatic of the problem is when ex-presidents disobey the government and form unofficial treaties with terrorist-sponsoring countries. If we can’t take Jimmy Carter’s passport away for engaging in treason, then how can we take action against a Bill Ayers? (Oh wait–we didn’t- he’s tenured.)
Half the population doesn’t appear able to define “terrorism”. So removing moles from the government becomes far more difficult when our congress and the entire nation can’t agree on the definition of “traitor” or which nations are the real bad guys.

Obama is a racist at heart.
Wright is a racist.
Neither can stop pointing out their “blackness”, which is no way to unify a country nor to open any dialogue, which neither wants.
End of story.

Near the end of the Q&A, Obama says that Wright was correct in stating that he (Wright) was never Obama’s spiritual advisor or mentor. Someone here has to have more than a few speeches/vidoes of Obama making exactly this claim for himself (would appreciate if anyone could post it).
This is no longer the neophyte “fibbing/improvising,” but rather a fatal flaw…whether of conceit of other.

Wright might have agreed to perform seppuku, but that doesn’t mean he can be subtle. His personality is so– excessive, not to mention a significant streak of strong self-centeredness. His narcissism guarantees that while he would help Obama, he would not burn down his entire house. Hence, his comments signaled that he isn’t truly exiled from the inner circle.
It’s speculation; but we’ll gain more insights on the situation as this year moves along.

There is a crazy old reverend who lives to throw poo
He has so many delusions
He hardly knows what to do
He whips himself into a froth
Without using his head,
And whips Obama very soundly
And sends Hillary into a far better orgasm than she ever got in bed

Neither Wright nor Jackson nor Shaprton are “ours” to reject.

The Air Force’s technical training instructor course is also designed to train out the habit of using verbal fillers aka the “uhs,” “you knows,” etc. Perhaps you took it. It’s been around twenty-six years since I took the course, however, so the fillers have crept back in.
Oh and Obama also averts his eyes when he’s lying.

It’s easy to make reference errors and other mistakes when dealing with complex verbal clauses, but someone with moderately advanced, High School level or higher, reading comprehension skills should have little difficulty parsing and interpreting it, and should be able to settle any confusion by reference to the larger context.
I would further maintain that someone without a chip on his shoulder who wasn’t sure how to interpret the above would request clarification before launching on a tirade. Someone who had already decided on his reaction before understanding what he was reacting to would, by contrast, simply launch away.
There is no way to read the larger sentence smoothly and sensibly except by understanding the noun phrase “caricature of their aspirations” as the subject of the participle “represented.”
In other words, “Wright” is being described as (said to represent) a “caricature of their [the community's] aspirations.” An uncomprehending reader might be confused if he or she tried to divorce the word “aspirations” from the grammatical and rhetorical context, and made it, rather than “caricature,” the subject of “represented by.”
In such an instance conventional usage would typically require the insertion of a comma or other sentence element to make the otherwise unnatural and awkward reading comprehensible – e.g.: “the caricature of their aspirations, aspirations collectively represented by the figure Wright.” In this example, I add the word “collectively” because in my opinion a direct equivalence of the plural “aspirations” and the singular proper noun “Wright” is too unnatural to suggest by grammar alone, since normally we would associate the name of a single individual (”Wright”) with a singular noun (”caricature”) rather than a plural one (”aspirations”).
It takes a lot of time and attention to explain such errors. I haven no problem responding to good faith arguments and disagreements. If you want additional English lessons, misterpeasea, you’ll have to pay me for them.
