Press conference: Obama shocked, shocked at Wright’s behavior; Update: Video added; Update: Q&A highlights added

Imagine his surprise at finding that his spiritual mentor of 20 years is a preening, hateful, attention whore. I missed the beginning so I don’t know yet if he did indeed disown the man he could no sooner disown than disown the whole black community. Video is coming; in the meantime, the boss is liveblogging. Sound off below.

Update: Here’s his statement, slightly edited for brevity. I have to go back and see if there’s anything worthy in the Q&A; if there is, I’ll update with more vid. Ace reports that Pope Andrew, shill of shills, has already pronounced St. Barry redeemed, so let the word go forth and the healing recommence. The bottom line: After 20 years of friendship, if Obama didn’t know Wright held these beliefs he’s a moron and if he did know he’s a fraud.

Link: sevenload.com

Update: Can’t remember if it’s in the Q&A or in the clip I posted, but at some point in discussing Trinity Obama mentions how wonderful the new pastor, Otis Moss, is compared to Wright. Here’s a little flashback for you from last month, of Moss equating the media’s criticism of Wright with a lynching. Exit question: Where exactly does that analogy leave Obama now?

Update: Speaking of people Sullivan shills for, remember when TNR broke the news about Ron Paul’s neo-confederate newsletters? The big knock there wasn’t that Paul necessarily held those views himself but that his carelessness in letting them be published under his name called his judgment and competence into question. How is this any different? Unless someone wants to argue that Wright’s militancy is something he came to only recently, then Obama somehow spent 20 years in the pews without ever noticing that his preacher wasn’t particularly fond of America, white people, “Zionism,” etc etc. Exactly how many sermons did he miss?

Update: Geraghty asks the question of the hour: What’s Wright’s move now?

Update: Rich Lowry speculates that Obama’s team must have some awfully bad polling numbers on Wright to warrant this spectacle today. Jon Ham, North Carolina resident and father of Mary Katharine, says he got a call just last night. Last week’s numbers from Survey USA: Obama by nine. Today’s numbers: Obama by five.

Update: I was planning to track down the “white folks’ greed runs a world in need” quote but the Standard beat me to it. Read Obama’s own account of Wright’s “Audacity of Hope” sermon to see for yourself how plausible it is that he didn’t know Wright spoke this particular brand of “truth” to power.

Update: Here are the highlights from the Q&A, in quick-hit, heavily edited form. Wright’s insinuation that Obama only pretends to disagree with him to preserve his electability — which is itself, of course, highly damaging to Obama’s electability — is a predictable sore spot.

I can’t see the video, but I’ll bet that this a flag lapel pin moment.

the agent of change couldnt even change his pastor…what a moron

SoCalInfidel on April 29, 2008 at 2:50 PM

What will CNN do now???

CNN is really in a bind. They have been puffing up Wright in an effort to help Obama but now Obama knocked down Wright.

EJDolbow on April 29, 2008 at 2:34 PM

Heh. And Soledad has squandered all of her hard-won journalistic credibility only just yesterday on this! Oh, the Heart-ache!

Jaibones on April 29, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Wright did not say anything yesterday that I had not heard before. I am not a member of his church I heard his name for the first time this year.

Why is Obama offended TODAY?

EJDolbow on April 29, 2008 at 2:52 PM

So it took Barry 20 years to figure out what we all figured out the moment Wright’s sermons were made public. He’s either a liar or a total idiot. Either way, he’s unfit to be the President of the United States.

TheBigOldDog on April 29, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Cynics may scoff - and certainly will. They will parse every nuance and try to paint Obama as another cynical, positioning pol.

Sullivan is inadvertantly not helping his ‘love’ Obama. It was the Rev. Wright who yesterday, and the day before, said that Obama is saying what he is because he’s running, and because he’s “a politician”, and not because he’s distancing himself form the reverand, and his church.

Andrew, you must think more clearly, even though love is blind.

Cicero43 on April 29, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Hey, even though this is a serious moment, it’s no time to give up your core beliefs. No flag pin.

eeyore on April 29, 2008 at 2:53 PM

What a goober….this guy is so focused on the White House that he’ll throw his pastor under the bus. If he sat under his teaching for 20 years and just NOW is finding out who his pastor is, he isn’t SMART enough to be President!

rightwingpastor on April 29, 2008 at 2:54 PM

Poor Obama, he got too many attentions whores on his side. Who needs enemies when you Wright and Al Sharpton.

jdun on April 29, 2008 at 2:54 PM

Hey! He was asleep for 20 years! You can’t blame him for that.

So is it Rip Van Obama or Barack Van Winkle?

TheBigOldDog on April 29, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Absolutely.

Weight of Glory on April 29, 2008 at 2:54 PM

It’s antithetical to our campaign. It’s antithetical to what I’m about. It’s not what America stands for. Rev. Wright does not speak for me. He doesn’t speak for our campaign.

Last time I checked there was this Senate full of Dimocrats who demanded that each and every Republican politician publicly denounce and shut down Rush Limbaugh’s radio program.

I truly do not understand how anyone in their right minds could vote for obama…combine this with his voting record and no experience and super liberal ideologies…the man is crazy and deserves to be in a straight jacket…not on a campaign trail

This may have already been said, but in case it hasn’t, this is war now. Wright and his followers have every incentive to dish what ever dirt they have on Obama. He’s sold them out. Will they take it or will they hit back?

Houlier than thou.

This is all a snow job. Wright is intentionally acting the lunatic to give Obama the opportunity to distance himself and garner Obama sympathy.

Entelechy on April 29, 2008 at 3:07 PM

I don’t think Wright will come back. On top of the 1.3 million home he got from his Church as a “retirement package” he sure got another cool million from Obama’s campaign to keep his mouth shut til November.

These are Democrats, after all.

Niko on April 29, 2008 at 3:08 PM

I don’t think this is a setup. Crazy people don’t realize they are crazy. Wright is truly crazy which makes him unable to “act” even crazier, because in his mind, he’s a sane person. You can bet Wright will exact revenge on his old buddy Barry.

txsurveyor on April 29, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Either way, he’s unfit to be the President of the United States.

TheBigOldDog on April 29, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Sadly this applies to all three of the candidates. Buy stocks in cloths pin companies before November.

infidel65 on April 29, 2008 at 3:13 PM

I think we need to hear from Michelle on this. The Obamas must be some of those people that Lincoln said you could fool all the time. Great quals for POTUS.

drunyan8315 on April 29, 2008 at 3:13 PM

Geraghty:

It’s frustrating that Wright had to become a catastrophe for Obama’s presidential ambitions before he could see him for what he is — a charlatan who lies, who spreads conspiracy theories, who compares this country to al-Qaeda, and who says to his flock that white Americans will never give them a fair shake.

For a moment I read the second half of that sentence as being attributed to Obama. The shoe fits.

Niko on April 29, 2008 at 3:13 PM

And this “horrible” country.

Just how “God DAMN America” bad could it be for Wright to retire to a 10,000 square foot house worth $1.6 million all paid for?

Oh, the suffering!

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 29, 2008 at 3:15 PM

If BO had never seen Wright talk like that before, why did he disinvite him to his campaign kickoff in 2007? He knew the guy was, in his own words, “controversial” and was trying to distance himself even then, before the stories broke. When they finally did, he first claimed he could not disown Wright, but then turned around and did just that. Both of them are disgustingly arrogant men.

Fact of the matter is that Wright can’t have Obama succeed. If a black man can be elected President in America, then it will be time to end affirmative action, minority set-asides, and all the other systemic perqs that presume blacks need a lower standard than whites to be successful. Wright’s whole fortune, career, and church have been built on the idea that blacks are permanently oppressed by society.

highhopes on April 29, 2008 at 3:21 PM

Building on what Geraghty said, how will this affect the black community at large? By and large, they’ve been voting Democratic and largely scolded for straying from the groupthinking victim mentality (see how Bill Cosby was damn near excoriated for his remarks about fatherless homes in the black community). Now there is a tough choice for these Americans to make: side with the Right Reverend Wright, or side with Barry O. Particularly if Wright responds negatively to his public scolding from Obama. It will (hopefully) bring about some real debate within the black community. This could shake things up a bit.

AZCoyote on April 29, 2008 at 3:25 PM

Timings sure is everything. Weird that Wright picked now to go on tour. Kinda lika convenient cooked up manufactured fight to get distance between for political gain. Wright was too offensively animated yesterday not to realize how much his remarks were over the top, almost like he was having fun gently tossing a softball to Obama to see how hard Barack could swing a bat at Wrights offered head… prolly gonna congrats each others AcadAward performance this weekend.
Did the CHEERING media crowd offend him too? Too bad they weren’t in on it, they could have supplied more appropriate gasps and mouth covering, instead they realize today his supporters were supposed to be offended yesterday.

Not only Wright’s (cushy) future, but that of Rev. Al and Rev. Jesse. The race baiters have to keep stirring the pot or the pot will dry up. Where are they after that? Left with no pot!

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 29, 2008 at 3:25 PM

This press conference and the entire cycle of reaction to Wright shows how a more durable claim against Obama needs to be made in place of the overstated, simplistic, and incendiary NC and other GOP attack ads.

The underlying idea of the attack ads is right - that voting for candidate x implies validation of Wright via liberal enablers like Obama - but the line of attack needs to be put the larger “us,” including blacks and all people of open minds, against the extremes which are at the same time symptoms of the cultural and socially stunting effects of plantation liberalism - genocide by abortion, schools and universities as indoctrination centers, Chicago-style government as spoils distribution, and so on.

Whatever Obama has “in his DNA,” his career is full of the rest, and a single press conference will never be enough to change that subject. There’s a lot there, and it’s a lot more important, then who endorsed who. An appeal of that type would be difficult, but it would be a lot better short- and long-term than simply assaulting the black community and its friends with the embarrassing caricature of their aspirations represented by Wright, and at the same time trying to tear away from them their new hero Obama without offering anything in their place.

CK MacLeod on April 29, 2008 at 3:26 PM

Dear Niko, you will learn fast that 1 million in America is not that much. This guy, Wright, will make way more if he comes back. He will be the Black leader, soon enough. Gone will be Sharpton, Jackson, and Obama. That’s his ultimate goal, and he is really filling a vacuum.

Since this controversy broke, Black callers into Boston Talk Radio support Wright 90/10. Their defense of Wright is basically, “everything he said is true.”

TheBigOldDog on April 29, 2008 at 3:31 PM

When Wright responds, I would not be surprised if he drops the race card on Obama for repeatedly referring to Wright as having given a performance, commanding a stage and being a caricature. I fully expect a Wright Special about Obama using coded White racist language to marginalize him as a minstrel show performer.

rw on April 29, 2008 at 3:31 PM

I actually feel sorry for Obama on this one. While it is surprising that he didn’t hear and recognize Wright’s ridiculous statements on the pulpit, the fact is that, on the pulpit, Wright could at least be assumed to be making them for the benefit of his faith and his flock. Wright’s latest statements were the type of obvious self-aggrandizements that would make even Jackson and Sharpton blush. Wright is revealed to be a man not of righteous (if misdirected and wrongheaded) indignation, but a man without dignity who needs to be the center of attention. He’s like a child, who doesn’t care if that attention is good or bad, just as long as it keeps coming. I really doubt Obama saw that side of Wright, and I bet he feels like he really didn’t know the man after all. Hopefully such a shocking realization about the nature of man would serve him well as President, were he elected to that position, where he’s have to deal with Putin and Assad and the like. I still hope that doesn’t happen, but let’s hope that this is the type of experience that means that he won’t get fooled again.

Tru dat, playette. I’m sure he’s got a book deal in the works now.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 29, 2008 at 3:32 PM

This is kind of funny, because O’Reilly just said last night that the only the Obama can do at this point is to hold a town meeting Q&A specifically about the Wright situation and then whenever asked about it in the future just point to that event so he can move on. So while he’s busy taking O’Reilly’s advice, we hear Hillary is supposed to go on O’Reilly’s show tomorrow… Man is his ego going to go nuts.

As for anyone, ANYONE who buys this crap that Obama is shocked or sorry or whatever he wants you to believe now… I have no respect for you. If you watched his reaction evolve as this Wright thing has, there’s one thing that no one can dispute - Obama is a dishonest turd. He’s had as many positions on the situation as Hillary has had on the war in Iraq… well, maybe not quite that many, but he’s changed his reaction numerous times now, and it’s very clear that he’s just a big fat liar like every other democrat. Now, I’m not saying it would have been good enough if he had come out and disowned him in the first place, because it still wouldn’t explain his close relationship with him for 20 years, but that would have been better than defending, throwing under the bus but still defending, doing some more of both, and then throwing him under the bus for good.

When is it Ayers’ turn? On second thought, I don’t want Ayers under a bus. The last person we need near a bus is an unrepentant terrorist bomber. But we should definitely wonder why Obama would hang around this guy. And don’t buy the “they barely knew each other” nonsense. I think we’ve heard enough to know that they traveled in the same liberal Chicago circles and Obama hasn’t had anything bad to say about this SOB.

I can only hope that Reverend Wright will respond with a lengthy statement followed by a Q&A so that this whole thing can be put behind us. These issues don’t matter.

Mormon Doc on April 29, 2008 at 3:33 PM

I hope the Black community rejects Wright.

Entelechy on April 29, 2008 at 3:28 PM

IMO, unfortunately, You can hope in one hand and $h!t in the other. Which one you think will fill up faster?

abinitioadinfinitum on April 29, 2008 at 3:34 PM

Maybe if he didn’t look down at his notes so often, I’d believe he actually meant it

ToddonCapeCod on April 29, 2008 at 3:35 PM

UPDATE: Here’s the problem for Barack Obama… how long until Wright responds? And how and when? And what will he say about the man he married, the man whose children he baptized?

He will say that Obama is saying what he has to, to win, and that they are still cool with each other, that nothing has changed. This is poison for Obama, and Wright knows what he’s doing, in his self-interest.

abinitioadinfinitum

My dad used to say that all the time. It is a quote that confused me when I was little but the more I hear St. Barry speak the more I realize the value of that … ahem… proverb.

I wouldn’t doubt it. You have to keep the perception going to keep your power and standing in the community. Without it, you might as well have a tin up begging for people to listen what you have to say.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 29, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Dana Milbank on MSNBC just now: “Obama’s getting swiftboated by his own pastor.”

It’s been so comical listening (gag) to msnbc doing the texas two step now attacking Wright and defending a “misguided” Obama. Can’t wait to see how Crissy approach’s this…..

Rovin on April 29, 2008 at 3:35 PM

If there were cameras from sidelines, you could actually see his pants being on fire.

Aristotle on April 29, 2008 at 3:35 PM

“The person I saw yesterday was not the person I met 20 years ago.”

Don’t know how true that is, but it is likely to be politically effective if he doesn’t backtrack. Wright gave up his student deferment and joined the Marines when he was a young man, so something obviously changed in him over the years.

Obama’s “Sister Souljah moment”?

MB4 on April 29, 2008 at 3:36 PM

I hope the Black community rejects Wright.

Entelechy on April 29, 2008 at 3:28 PM

They haven’t rejected Sharpton or Jackson. So why start now?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 29, 2008 at 3:37 PM

“I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother.”

Update: Speaking of people Sullivan shills for, remember when TNR broke the news about Ron Paul’s neo-confederate newsletters?

notice Derbyshire for example, he was the most defensive of the Paul people at the Corner, still is. Yet when the Wright stuff broke he was all over it from all angles and declared that Obama was finished.

for some Paul people who like Obama, they are starting to see the connection. for others like Derb they are oblivious to what all Paul stood for.

jp on April 29, 2008 at 3:42 PM

If you were watching carefully, you could see Barry skillfully talking out of both sides of his mouth and his ass.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 29, 2008 at 3:42 PM

Obama just put an ad in the personals looking for a new pastor. It reads (sung to Rupert Holmes Pina Colada):

If you like hope and free health care,
Pointing fingers of blame
If you’re not into Moyers
If you have half a brain

If you like raising tax ’til midnight
And you don’t like Green Bay
You’re the pastor I’ve longed for
Call Chris Matthews today

Mormon Doc on April 29, 2008 at 3:43 PM

Geraghty asks the question of the hour: What’s Wright’s move now?

Probably to join Sharpton for a little grievance tourism.

After 20 years of friendship, if Obama didn’t know Wright held these beliefs he’s a moron and if he did know he’s a fraud.

Well, he’s clearly not a moron. He’s a fraud, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing for a politician running for major office. My question is: how is the average, undecided voter interpreting his repudiation of Wright? A lot of people are going to think, “what a fraud. but he’s so good at it.” We’ve been through this with Bill Clinton. Everybody knew he what a cynical political opportunist he was, but we elected him twice because, I think, deep down a lot of people admired how artfully he pulled it off.

Obama gave the speech he should have given the first time, in strong enough terms to satisfy the “what have you done for me lately” crowd. Other than that he’s handled this scandal as well as he could have. He eventually came around to a position that unconditionally rejected not only Wright’s remarks, but Wright himself. Whether or not he meant it, and it’s entire possible that he did, Obama said the right things. Most importantly, he dealt with the scandal early in the campaign, but not so early that it will cost him the nomination.

Wright poked at a wound on America’s spirit that’s been festering for the last 200 years. As outrageously unfair as it might seem, the Republicans now need to be careful they don’t go rubbing salt in it.

As for Chrissy Matthews and the rest, sooner or later all but the craziest will turn on Obama like rejected lovers. That’s been in the cards ever since the first signs of infatuation.

Matthews recent reported “too much Fred Astaire” comment on BO suggests he’s already thinking about trying to re-gain some measure of credibility with the others on the cheerleader squad who’ve guarded their reputations a little more successfully.

I’m sure he’s got a book deal in the works now.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on April 29, 2008 at 3:32 PM

Obama mentioned his books in his comments. Surprised he didn’t look right into the camera and mention they were available at Amazon, BN, and major bookstores everywhere!

RushBaby on April 29, 2008 at 3:44 PM

According to MSNBC this must be the greatest speech since the “greatest speech since MLK”.

Connecting the dots
I can’t make a proper flow chart with arrows here but visualize these names charted with Ayers’s arrow(maoism) pointing at Cone, Wright and Obama. Wrights arrow (community political power) points at Obama. Cone’s(black liberationism) arrow points at Wright. Wright’s arrow (black liberation and community political power) points at Obama.

You may disagree on this flow path, but we’d probably agree on the general dynamics of influences. It would be great to start creating a huge online flow chart showing all the interactions people can establish and contribute; including Obama’s jihadi friends and George Soros. For me–
Visualizing the Pattern Helps
Obama
^ |
Cone–> Wright
(black liberation theologians committed to destroying American government, culture and society by preventing RACIAL HARMONY; and instead training future generations of black Americans to accept that race war is a given.
^
|
Farrakhan
(radical Islamist committed to destroying American government, culture and society, “white people” and establishing the rule of radical Islam
^
|
Bill Ayers
(a maoist -committed to destroying American government, society and culture and replacing democracy with a Maoist\Communism dictatorship.Formally used violence to push revolution but now intends to accomplish his goals by undermining the American infrastructure from beneath– “swimming among the fishes”–silent revolution creeping in until its too late. His educational reforms are a classic example–get to the children and raise up a future red army )
