I was invited to that dinner, but I refused to go.
Can you believe this? They don’t serve my favorite food:

By the way, I told those who will bury me, after 200 years, to spread Chinese Food on my casket in the Church and in the Cemetery.
I just wanna make sure I have enough food on my way to Heaven.

When it OK to diss the NY Times among the elite, it’s curtains. Notice how uncomfortably it appeared to go over.
Too funny. These guys take themselves so seriously and forget that the rest of America is losing the “love”.
thatcher on April 27, 2008 at 10:17 PM
Maybe the reason the New York times didn’t get a table
at the correspondent’s dinner, was that Jason Blair and
Judy Miller were busy using the table…to a hum…

She was an active on-duty CIA super spy dontcha ya know!!

Craig Ferguson is now officially part of the true “cream of the crop”.
Telling the NYT to shut up? Ripping on Maureen Dowd? Telling self-loathing Americans their America bashing needs to stop? Openly talking about his love for this country?
Gutsy. I know it shouldn’t be gutsy, but it is.
MadisonConservative on April 27, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Entelechy on April 27, 2008 at 10:31 PM
We watched his whole thing last night, really funny stuff. You ought to try to get video of the Mexico joke he told. It was part of a long riff on why he didn’t go to Canada instead of the US….ended with saying the US is like the party and the Canadians are the cranky neighbors upstairs banging on the floor and yelling “Quiet down!”
He said, “hey, why not come to the party?” The Canadian response? “We weren’t invited.” He says “So what, Mexico wan’t invited, and they all came anyway.”
My husband and I were laughing, and started howling when CSPAN moved the camera over to show somebody up on the front row who looked very, very unhappy.
funky chicken on April 27, 2008 at 10:32 PM
He gored lots of oxen in his routine last night, but all his jokes were good, and right on the money.

Kaptain Amerika on April 27, 2008 at 11:04 PM
I watch Ferguson pretty regularly. He basically put it this way…’In America you are allowed to be odd’.
He picks on GW about like Leno but nothing like Letterman does. He usually has a zinger for both sides of the aisle.
Limerick on April 27, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Wow! Holy cow that was good!
4shoes on April 27, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Limerick, my rhetorical question was strictly how Europe views him on his “love for America”, which they can’t stand. The anti-Americanism is so common now that in school, a cousin, who’s a professor there, told me today, they don’t even display or mention the U.S. natural wonders/attractions any more (they used to be awsome at some point in time not so long ago). Of course, they blame it all on Bush. If Barry or Hillary won’t become the next president, they’ll all need a huge couch, and lots of pills and counseling.
Entelechy on April 27, 2008 at 11:09 PM
I would love to see Mark Steyn a US Citizen next. Imagine a Mark Ferguson / Mark Steyn tag team interview. Wow!
Egfrow on April 27, 2008 at 11:11 PM
Lots of pills? Do they have lots of pills in Europe? (just kidding).
I took Craig’s ‘odd’ remark as saying he didn’t fit into the someones group. From watching his show he is no fan of England (being a Scot that makes sense, I guess).
Limerick on April 27, 2008 at 11:13 PM
?How come someone has to come to America to tell the truth about us, Where befor we Americans were the marvel of the world!
AMartinez on April 27, 2008 at 11:15 PM

The best thing Letterman’s done in years was to get that guy back on tv.

Wow, nice. There are some people in that crowd who look like somebody peed in their soup! They had these looks on their faces like gangsters doing a slow burn–laugh now, cry later, Craig. Talk about tugging on Superman’s cape! Speaking truth to power, that’s supposed to mean peeing in GW’s soup–but our soup? You’ll never eat lunch in this town again.

Heh! A cauldron deep in obsession. ;-)
Kini on April 27, 2008 at 11:51 PM
And, with that, a couple thousand conservative DVRs were set to tape the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. It’ll never get him the recognition a little bit of lame clapper humor would have, and good on ‘im for not succumbing to the urge. He really is pretty funny.
marykatharine on April 27, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Don’t you mean CDDDDRRRAP.
91Veteran on April 28, 2008 at 12:01 AM
This zinger at the Times kind of fits in with that, since the most vicious attacks on the Times about Judith Miller were from the left, over their belief that she was in the tank for Bush over the Iraqi WMD allegations (to the point the left was happy to see her rot in jail during the Valerie Plaime kerfuffle). So Ferguson threw a bit of a bone to both sides by including Blair and Miller, though his added shots at the paper itself were bound to go over better on the right than on the left at the dinner.

That was awesome. I just watched the whole thing on that other video site, and he was very funny. I loved when the camera showed the rather, indignant faces. Just classic. The NYT joke was the best though.

Craig Ferguson’s whole speech is available on YouTube, and it’s quite funny, even the swipes at President Bush and Vice President Cheney. But perhaps we’ll live to see Mark Steyn take the podium, insh’allah.

Here is a paraphrase of his remarks:
The New York Times unfortunately did not buy a table.
They felt this event undercut the credibility of the press.
It’s funny, you see I thought Jayson Blair and Judy Miller took care of that.
What, what did I say? Did I go too far? Well let me say this: shut the hell up New York Times you sanctimonious, whining jerks
—
I agree with him 100%. The NYT doesn’t like the event solely because they don’t like the current president. Put BHO in office, and they couldn’t attend fast enough.

Bravo, Ferguson!
GWBush gave a great encore comedic performance, himself.
The Press will miss GW more than they’ll ever admit. There hasn’t been another POTUS ever so willing to poke such good fun of himself. When the joke’s not on us, GWB is great!

Ah, yes. Perhaps I can be of some assistance. As a native and continuing resident of Scotland (hence time delay in contributing to these messageboards)I can honestly say that I think most Scots would struggle to remember who Craig Ferguson was. If indeed they ever knew. (I’ll test this hypothesis at work tomorrow and get back to you). I have a vague recollection of him having been on the TV in Scotland some time ago but for the life of me I couldn’t tell you the name of any programme he appeared in or whether indeed it was a sitcom, chatshow or children’s show (or all or none of the above). I can’t remember ever being struck by how funny he was. Billy Connolly he was not.
That he has gone on to great things in the US is a source of bemusement to me (and, I suspect, to most other Scots). Without wishing to appear condescending to you Yanks (being as how you’re so bitter and attached to your guns and religion ‘n’ all) I have a feeling that Mr Ferguson’s success owes a little to the “Gee, I love your accent” factor.
(Tracy Ullman’s success in the States also leaves me bemused, by the way. She was significantly better known in Britain than Craig Ferguson, however.)
