Quote of the day

“[T]he Southern frontiersmen never got over their hatred of the East Coast elites and a belief in the morality and nobility of defying them. Their champion was the Indian-fighter Andrew Jackson. The outcome was that a substantial portion of the new nation developed, over many generations, a rather savage, unsophisticated set of mores. Traditionally, it has been balanced by a more diplomatic, communitarian Yankee sensibility from the Northeast and upper Midwest. But that latter sensibility has been losing ground in population numbers–and cultural weight.

The coarsened sensibility that this now-dominant Southernism and frontierism has brought to our national dialogue is unmistakable.”

In a way I’m glad that someone finally said it. Truth is, Liberal hate Southerners. Hate them. Wath The Daily Show, the incredible contempt he has.

AYNBLAND on April 26, 2008 at 10:09 PM

If it is Hirsh and Newsweek, why would anyone bother to read it in the first place? (I can tell you about some course Northeasterners and their ugly bigotry toward the South; but that is hardly news. I grew up in the Midwest so I am neutral in the North South battle of contempt and have seen it go both ways.)

KW64 on April 26, 2008 at 10:10 PM

Sweet Tea and grits. The south was bound to win. Oh, and Nascar.

Wow. That’s in Newsweek?

Southernism is taking over our national dialogue. Maybe it’s time for the North to secede from the Union.

–Michael Hirsh

Michael Hirsh, I am a “Damn Yankee” who grew up in a liberal Northeastern blue state, came to NC for college, and never left.

(To NC natives, Yankees visit and leave, “Damn Yankees” visit and don’t leave!)

They even have a whole town here for “Damn Yankees” … it’s called Cary, NC, and even my mother in the northeast knows that Cary is an acronym for “Containment Area for Relocated Yankees”. :-)

I thank God that Christian businessmen in the Bible belt led me to Jesus Christ.

2008 appears to be the year of pulling back the curtain to reveal the truth about the great and mighty Oz…

And now that your side is being revealed for what it is, and you are losing ground, you want the North to secede? That’s pathetic. It’s time to break free from your mental slavery…

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:32

In Texas in particular, Lieven writes, we can see “the mingling of the Southern and Western traditions” that made its first appearance during Jackson’s presidency, and which today so defines our current politics, culture, and foreign policy.

Which is why my wife and I moved to Texas. Like the saying goes: I wasn’t born in Texas, but I got here just as fast as I could. Man I love this state!

It’s simple really why the south (and west) is rising. That is the part of the country that is
A.) Having babies
B.) Growing economically largely through free markets
C.) Actually believe in something worth living for

The northeast (and coasts)
D.) Aren’t reproducing themselves
E.) aren’t growing economically largely because of growing statism
F.) are identified with the ideology of multi- cultural and postmodern relativism. A philosophy that says that no one is better, morally or physically, than anyone else, which explains D & E. Why have babies if they are no better than anyone else?

Who is waging this cultural clash? Are the southern reactionary types trying to impose their “unsophisticated set of mores” on the whole of America? Or is it the “sophisticated set” wishing to use the powers of government to promote their mores?

I know of no unwashed person who wishes to tell the peoples of San Francisco or New York or the other venues of sophistication how they must run their lives. Yet I know of many of those on the higher order who wish to use the courts, the law, the state to tell others what they must allow.

Who is firing the shots here, Mr. Hirsh?

And yet when the great unwashed fire back, it is they who are accused of causing the clash.

We’ll stop shooting back if you stop first.

I think it is true that they South always hated the “finger in their nose” Northeasterner. As expansion was on the move the Mid-west hated them and the SW and so on. Fortunately for the NEern bastards, expansion finally hit another coast and they could add SF,LA, and Seattle to their team. And this is the way it still sits. May the best man win.

That is because the “sophisticates” cannot compete economically or societally when left to their own devices. The only way they can survive long term is if government makes everyone else behave, otherwise they will be overwhelmed by the “course masses” washing over them. For many good reasons most people don’t want to be like these people, and without the force of law the “sophisticates” will be nothing but irritating background noise for a healthy happy society. With the force of law on their side they then have the power to spread their cancer wherever they so choose.

Southernism is taking over our national dialogue. Maybe it’s time for the North to secede from the Union.

First of all, I don’t think it’s entirely accurate any longer to say that the primary division in this country is between the South and North East; it’s between the metropolitan areas and everything in between. Second, the reason the influence of the metro areas is waning is because they kill a lot more of their babies and are more dependent on the state. Third of all, if the liberal metro elites want a civil war, they will lose soundly, and our nation would be strengthened as a result.

I personally don’t buy into the myth about America being so culturally divided. I have family all over the place… in New England, Montana, and throughout the MidWest and Near South. I live in California after spending most of my life overseas. We all get together from time to time and enjoy our differences while cherishing all the things that remind us how alike we all are. There are plenty of barbs thrown around but Americans have plenty in common.

So, if I say she was voted off because she had a sleeve tattoo, the writer could blame it on sweet tea?

PattyAnn on April 26, 2008 at 11:20 PM

Interesting the Civil War occured because the South was losing the political battle in Congress over who had the most votes. Free States were rapidly outgrowing slave ones.

This caused resentment in the South and led to the worst war in American history.

Now it seems the North is whining that its political influence is on the wain and it doesnt like the South having so much power. The economic and political shift is what really is causing liberals to fear this change and why they hope to throw open the borders to decrease the power of the right in this country.

William Amos on April 26, 2008 at 11:22 PM

It’s actually a Marxist/Socialist/Communist thing. Look at what the Communist Manifesto said about rural vs. urban people.

Democratic Socialists (who like to incorrectly call our REPUBLIC a “Democracy”) get the majority of their votes in a few very large cities. (You can go to http://gis.esri.com/esriclips/clip.cfm?ClipID=320 and see a flash demo of ESRI GIS maps from 2004 election data, and the very last one is a 3D map that makes it clear that Dem’s get the majority of their votes in places like Chicago, LA, Boston, New York, Detroit, Seattle, Miami, etc.)

Also take note that the Democratic Socialists want to unconstitutionally change the way we elect our President, to make it less “Republican” and more “Democratic”. I say it’s unconstitutional because the states have to determine the selection of their electors using only rules within their individual state. Anything that is “Interstate” is the domain of the Constitution, and changes to that require Constitutional Amendments, not “Interstate Compacts”.

Does anyone besides me think that big cities are where Dems steal elections? In big populations they can hide fraud more easily, and even a small percentage of fraud within a large population can tilt the outcome of the entire state, and sometimes even the entire country. That’s why the Dems in 2004 were trying to steal the entire Presidential election by introducing fraud in the area of Miami.

How do we improve accountability and ensure fair elections in our 20 biggest U.S cities this November?

Anyone? Anyone?

BTW, if Mr. Hirsch (and others like him) want to secede from the union, they should take a moment to consider where (geographically) the bulk of the military might of this nation is located.

P.S.: Mr Hirsh, if you are really serious about seceding from the Union, I suggest you consider moving to Vermont. I hear they have a very active secessionist movement going on there. Hurry, beat the rush.

Two things to add:

A) The South and West are where the “right-to-work” states are. So, I guess the “worker’s paradise” they created in the Northeast and Midwest hasn’t been such a paradise after all.

B) If the North wants another civil war, perhaps they should remember what Rhett Butler said in Gone With The Wind: “The North has factories and shipyards. All we have is cotton, slaves, and … arrogance.” Today, the South has all the heavy industry because unions drove them out of the North. We also have the military installations, and, best yet, we all have guns coming out our wazoos and God on our side, just ask Barack Obama.

Now if only one of the two political parties had the balls of an Andrew Jackson maybe we could have gotten out of Iraq in two years after a smashing victory, maybe Iran would have been taken care of by now, the rest of the world quaking in their boots to even think of pissing us off and maybe just maybe our kids could be taught about the founding documents and what it means and finally maybe our borders could be secured.

I’d love to find out how superior the metropolitan elites feel over the rest of us after they’ve been without a bath for a few weeks and their cloths are in tatters. How far will their Utopian fantasies carry them once they’ve been made to come to terms with reality? Precisely nowhere.

Really? My hyperbole meter is pegged out on that one.

Yee-ha ya bunch of flee bitten redneck hicks! Not everyone in the northeast lives in the city or is a liberal, damn there even might be a Republican or two if ya’ll care to look around!

hillbillyjim on April 27, 2008 at 1:22 AM

There’s nothing wrong with hyperbole.

But do you mean to say that you wouldn’t care to see the very elites who would secede from the union brought down to earth and forced to deal real life as a result of their own actions? In my opinion it would be poetic justice.

Seriously though, my comment above amounts to nothing more than hyperbole because the reality is that in the event of an actual civil war, elites like Hirsh would be among the first to skip town and leave the country.

FloatingRock on April 27, 2008 at 1:32 AM

I know the comments here are all just jokey but the idea of civil war overwhelms me with anxiety and loathing. Pray it never happens.

Of course there are. I’ve been one of them most of my life, although in Seattle not the NE. There are plenty of liberals in the red zones as well. Nobody here is seriously contemplating a civil war, we’re just pointing out by way of example how preposterous Hirsh’s proposition is.

True enough, you’ve seen enough of it, I’m guessing.

doubleplusundead on April 27, 2008 at 1:43 AM

Who in the hell would want to fight a civil war to keepstrong> the elites. Now fight to throw them out, well, thats a different story.

Big Orange on April 27, 2008 at 1:43 AM

Frankly, Hirsh-let, I don’t give a damn.

The desperation of this dipsh*ts is diagnosable:

OWS- Obama Withdrawal Syndrome.

Many more OWS to come.

(And some Ouch’s, too.)

I think that aengus answers that for me:

Thank you, aengus.

No, I do not wish anyone to be unbathed and wearing rags, no matter how misguided their idiotic political beliefs.

Just trying to be a bit silly, smooth night (so far) at work! Hirsh and his ilk are clueless morons. If the Obamatrons want a glimpse of America under the messiah they should look at whats going on in Massachusetts under Gov. Cadillac Duval Patrick, the commonwealth is going down the shi##er!

Yup.

Like AP said: “bitter.”

hillbillyjim on April 27, 2008 at 1:50 AM

B) If the North wants another civil war, perhaps they should remember what Rhett Butler said in Gone With The Wind: “The North has factories and shipyards. All we have is cotton, slaves, and … arrogance.” Today, the South has all the heavy industry because unions drove them out of the North. We also have the military installations, and, best yet, we all have guns coming out our wazoos and God on our side, just ask Barack Obama.

You are so right except Cotton has been replaced by Natural Gas and Slaves by Illegal Aliens. But that arrogance thing , I wouldn’t be too proud of a characteristic that in the past has led to the South’s fall.

Well having just moved to Texas, Sept 2006, I must say all the nice, friendly people that I’ve met thus far were not born in Texas. But are transplants like myself looking for a nice place to raise their family free of the cancer that is Liberalism. This was the result of my company closing its Northern California office. Only to find strongholds of racist attitudes and the rudest people I’ve ever seen. It’s not like we went from the frying pan into the fire, just another frying pan containing a different kind of oil.

We were able to purchase a much larger home here, maybe that’s the problem. My son school mates always tell him that he’s living like P-Diddy. Only to discover their homes are larger than his. Could it be they are surprised we weren’t living in shotgun shack. Is it to far fetch to believe that a black family living in a nice neighborhood is something alien to them. I believe this is part of the “new” south that has yet to be conquered.

I was always told that there is Northern kind of racism and Southern kind of racism. Northerners don’t care how big you get as long as you don’t get to close. A southerner doesn’t care how close you get as long as you don’t get to big. Or to paraphrase Chris Rock, “…A white man with a nickel hates a Blackman with a dime”.

The guy goes on a long rant about how some girl loses on American Idol then blames the South for it..

Sheesh.. Maybe she just sucked really bad?

Living in the north and the south I don’t think you can simply say whites are racist. In fact your comment is more racist than most I’ve read. Most people I have befriended could care less what color a person’s skin is or what they make. It is the person’s character that they care about. If you look for racism in everything you will find it even when it isn’t there.

I’m pretty sure it’s a Zionist conspiracy.
