Indystar debate demand — earnest, or satirical? Update: “Warriors” video added

posted at 9:29 am on April 25, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The lines keep blurring so often between real news and satire that keeping them separate grows more difficult. Take yesterday’s Indystar editorial as an example. The Indiana newspaper wants another nationally-televised debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, which is understandable given the critical nature of the upcoming Indiana primary. However, Indystar says it will help Obama, which is when it begins to look like comedy:

Why another debate toward the end of an exhausting campaign? For starters, the last debate, in Pennsylvania, was heavily criticized for delving into side issues rather than centering on topics such as the economy, health care and foreign policy. Well, then, let’s have a debate here that digs into the many serious issues facing the nation and this state. How, for example, do the candidates reconcile increasing taxes during a possible recession? How would they fulfill their pledge to pull troops out of Iraq in a matter of months if the Iraqi government were to collapse or terrorist organizations were to set up training bases there?

Like so many other media outlets, the Indystar editors must have missed the last half of the debate, when Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous asked these exact questions. Obama blew the answer on taxes, especially on capital-gains tax rates. Gibson asked both candidates how they could justify raising taxes in a recession, and asked Obama specifically why he would raise the cap-gains rate when such increases traditionally lowered revenues to the federal government. Obama did nothing but sputter about “fairness”, revealing himself as a redistributionist first and foremost.

A debate planned for North Carolina, which also holds its primary on May 6, fell apart this week after the Obama campaign backed out. The senator’s loss in Pennsylvania should prompt his advisers to reconsider whether this is the right time to disengage.

Are they kidding? One of the reasons Obama got blown out in Pennsylvania was the debate itself. The right time to disengage was about five minutes before Obama spoke on Billionaires Row in San Francisco on April 4th. Disengagement and stonewalling is all the strategy Obama has if he wants to maintain any credibility with the superdelegates. The Obama campaign has deliberately limited his press contacts over the last few weeks, and his Dan Quayle-like performance on April 16th will ensure more of the same.

The Clinton campaign already has accepted an invitation issued by the Indiana Debate Commission, along with its partners CNN and PBS, to stage in a debate here.

I’ll bet she has. I’ll also bet that the John McCain campaign has offered to sponsor it.

Obama, who weeks after seemingly wrapping up the nomination is still struggling to close out the race, needs something to stem Clinton’s growing momentum in the wake of her victories in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Texas.

A debate could help him.

No, at this point, it could only hurt him. The moderators would have only two choices: go after him like ABC did, or look like softballers after their tough questioning. Obama can’t handle the former, and the latter would make him look like a cream puff. He’s better off hiding among the Abercrombie & Fitch crowds, saying little, and hiding behind his waffles whenever the press approaches.

Update: I think everyone got the reference in the caption, but just in case you never saw Warriors, here’s the scene:

This, unfortunately, was the high point of the movie.

Will the Hope Warrior come out and play?

Heh…I get this unbidden image of Hillary dangling bottles from her fingers and clinking them together.

Two dems debating is death by a thousand cuts.

Akzed on April 25, 2008 at 9:37 AM

It’s unfair to compare Obama to Quayle – and that’s to Quayle.

Quayle had loads more experience in Congress and didn’t hang around lunatic preachers and terrorists.

Remember how the left railed at Quayle’s inexperience and he was Bush’s VP?

Bambi has far less experience, but being a dedicated Marxist makes up for that, apparently.

NoDonkey on April 25, 2008 at 9:38 AM

You know, I think everybody had that analysis of the last debate all wrong. The press, including conservative blogs and radio, just conceded the point that Obama had to answer “tough questions” finally. What tough questions? Shouldn’t we expect a presidential candidate to have at least a high-school level understanding of our tax system? All of the questions I saw them ask, he should’ve had a ready answer for long ago. It was nothing but softballs for someone who’s been campaigning for over a year. What’s this with giving him the notion that the questions were hard?

Saying they will ask pertinent questions regarding policy will just push Obama further underground. The last thing he wants to do is go on record regarding important decisions.
But if his numbers keep falling, he will be forced to show up at some kind of “debate”. Maybe where each handler provides the questions they want to be asked.

I have lived in Indiana for 35 out of 37 years. Have read the Indy Star for the last 15 years or so and so can sadly vouch that they were sincere.

When stupidity on the level of their editorial board is involved all of the comedy is definitly of the unintentional variety.

What’s this with giving him the notion that the questions were hard?

I had a great Anthro prof at Cal eons ago when I was an undergrad there, and when asked whether the midterm was hard, answered “Depends. If you know all the answers, then no, it’s not hard at all. If you don’t–well, you’ll find it hard. Really really hard, because this is Cal, not your local CC. And whether you know the answers or not depends entirely how much time you put into it between now and the exam.”

I’ve used this to great advantage many times in my teaching career, and I would say the same to Mr. Obama. If you don’t want to be left failing the exam, make sure you know the answers. Because this is an American Presidential election, for crying out loud, you’re not running for senior class president.

Sheesh. If I were going to debate someone I’d make sure I had an answer to every nasty question the moderater might throw at me, and a response to every position my opponent has that differs from mine. I’d make sure I could make everything he says look bad. That’s the way you win debates, to take your opponent’s views and turn them on their heads. Who doesn’t know this?

Do your homework, bud. These are the big leagues.

Bob's Kid on April 25, 2008 at 9:58 AM

I wonder–would CNN and PBS ask the kind of tough questions ABC did? Clinton might get more mileage out of accusing Obama of ducking debates than from an actual debate using CNN and PBS moderators.

The comparison to Dan Quayle brings to mind a quote from Lloyd Bentsen: “I knew Jack Kennedy, and you’re no Jack Kennedy”. This goes double for Obama!

Obama is skeered.

America got so see who he really is.

Conservative_SAHM on April 25, 2008 at 10:05 AM

Funny you should mention comedy…

I’m growing weary of the elitism, racism, blatant obfuscation, and open treason of people like obama, wright, ayers and their party and media accolytes.

So for a pleasant change of pace last night I unplugged and watched one of my favorite movies; Eddie Griffin’s “Undercover Brother”, and laughed my ass off.

There are some truely funny and revealing and uncomfortable moments in that movie. Is it a great movie? Not really. But it’s still one of my favorites and never fails to make me laugh.

Highly recommended. The laughter will do you good. It did me.

Obama can run but he can’t hide.

How is he supposed to handle a national debate with John McCain?

amkun on April 25, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Obama’s bitter over the last debate. No more debates for you.

davecatbone on April 25, 2008 at 10:28 AM

Great analysis, Ed. Unfortunately, we have to deal with the Indy Star on a daily basis. Thank Allah for HotAir!

We need more comedy in the democrat nomination process.
Has Gorbachev endorsed Obama yet?

Right_of_Attila on April 25, 2008 at 10:34 AM

Confucius say:’To see what is right and not to do it is the want of courage’

In this particular case, Comrade H.R. Clinton has far more cajones than Comrade B.H. Obama.

As Tom Clancy would say ‘Brass ones’

Bob’s Kid on April 25, 2008 at 9:58 AM

The irony, is that their are only about a dozen questions that they will ask.
Relationships
Economy
World politics; middle east, central and south america, africa, europe
War
etc. a pretty short list, and predictable questions.
If someone can’t handle a debate, how do they run a country?

right2bright on April 25, 2008 at 12:07 PM

Obama floats like a bee and stings like a butterfly.

The Hope-A-Dope candidate.

Or, in the words of his de facto campaign slogan:

Run away! Run away!!!!!

The Indy Star is overrated.

Obama is a eunich.

Good points. I think the right has misstepped in allowing the past debate to get painted as “Obama stumbled a little bit because the questions were hard”.

Good spin by the B.O. campaign though.
