Whoopi to Hasselbeck: That’s a “very white” outlook you have

Of what allegedly “white” sin is she guilty? Why, believing that racial or gender solidarity shouldn’t be a top priority when choosing a president, particularly amongst progressives who fancy themselves so consumed with policy and “substantive” issues that being deprived of them in one out of 21 debates is an offense possibly worthy of a boycott. You’re advised to read the extended transcript from the ‘Busters as I’ve omitted Behar’s not unreasonable point that one might as well vote one’s biology given how indistinguishable Hillary’s and Obama’s platforms are. But here’s the meat of it, with Whoopi tying herself in an identity-politics gordian knot by insisting that Hasselbeck can’t possibly understand the way minorities see this election before being reminded that, in fact, Elisabeth is as much a woman as the rest of them. Whereupon the knot is duly cut as Whoopi segues effortlessly into an ageist argument that Hasselbeck’s not old enough to grasp the full significance of Hillary’s candidacy. Call it the biological trump card. Well played, Goldberg. Very well played.

I wonder what the outrage would be if McCain said to Obama during a debate, “Wow, what a black thing to say”.

It would be a very predictable response, muyoso.

Also, how quickly would Hasselbeck be fired if she ever said “Thats a ‘very black’ outlook you have” to Whoopi.

“… with Whoopi tying herself in an identity-politics gordian knot …”
Yet another reason why I love HotAir, a reference to Gordian’s Knot! The ultimate cool, to a history geek!
“… by insisting that Hasselbeck can’t possibly understand the way minorities see this election …”
“It’s a black thing, you wouldn’t understand.”

The Harpy roundtable. Whoopi, you’re totally put upon. It totally sucks to get paid exorbitant amounts of cash to regurgitate dim talking points.
What’s the reason for this show anyway? Whatever happened to test patterns? Doesn’t any channel sign off anymore? This is what happens with 24/7/365 programming.

It takes more than white goggles to make Bush and Hasselback look the same. You’d need beer goggles and METH goggles strapped over them. Then maybe from a distance, you might see it.

Well little girl, nobody understands the horrible oppression
we’veI’ve suffered and that makes it OK for me to be racist and you have to just tolerate it.I don’t think its OK for anybody to vote a color or gender, its wrong, its not acceptable for POTUS and demanding an identity candidate is just as racist and bigoted as if Elizabeth demanded a white one.

I would have smacked Whoopi back with a “Well then, Whoopster, then I guess her candidacy isn’t the “significant” event you have been lead to believe. Margaret Thatcher or Golda Meir she ain’t!”

I’m SOOOO sick of the identity politics. In the next election, we should just stick all the candidates in isolation so nobody can see what they look like. Just vote on the issues and the substance. Ridiculous.

Man, they’re lucky there isn’t a one-armed transgendered Somali rape victim on the show. She’d win every argument.
Cicero43 on April 24, 2008 at 8:04 PM
I’ve never been able to understand why it’s alright to tell someone “That’s such a white way of seeing things”….as if a black person has any more clue of what it’s like to be white than a white person has of what it’s like to be black (as if there is one universal white/black/whatever experience anyway).
On a side note, if Hasselbeck doesn’t understand the woman thing because she’s too young to remember when women were oppressed, doesn’t that mean that women are no longer oppressed and, therefore, there’s no reason to vote for a woman ‘just because’?
JadeNYU on April 24, 2008 at 8:05 PM
And Whoopi has that job because…nevermind.
SouthernGent on April 24, 2008 at 8:09 PM
Oprah has white people working for her.
Obama has a racist “uncle” as his pastor.
Whoopi makes a racial comment.
If the KKK founded a nationwide chruch, at the front of which was a pic of MLK at the foot of the entrance, would we see any outrage?
A strong comparison for certain, but this nickel and diming of racism by blacks in America will only add up to an explosion of hatred.

I confronted a black kid who worked for me years ago when he was making fun of the white buffoon characters on a black oriented show while we were all sharing a cocktail. I told him that the characterization offended me and why wouldn’t a white person be offended. The kid took it to heart and learned something that day. He was a good kid.

It’s even worse when Barbara Wawa is there. She will interrupt Elizabeth if she strays too far from the orthodoxy found in most newsrooms, act like some kind of irrefutable authority figure from on high and tell the stupid lady viewers what the TRUTH is.
snaggletoothie on April 24, 2008 at 8:32 PM
Ok, I’m going against the grain on this one. Perhaps, all Whoopi and Sherri were saying that as a minority they take a certain pride in seeing someone of their racial background succeed and Elizabeth being part of the majority doesn’t completely understand how that feels. I see nothing wrong that.
I know as a Hispanic it makes me happy when I see other Hispanics doing good in fields that are particularly hard to get into period.

Excellent, AP.
I am so happy, so happy to see the fruition of multiculturalism and identity politics come to pass in my lifetime, and the Dem Party feeding on itself. I knew eventually it would happen. I wasn’t certain it would happen in my lifetime. How sweet it is to see.
It’s a good thing lefties are killing each other, as apparently we don’t have the spine to do it for ourselves.
petefrt on April 24, 2008 at 8:45 PM
Yes, they seem to be happy only when people with their ideology succeed. I concede that.
I’m not excited about Hillary’s candidacy as woman. However, if Hillary was conservative and not a big liar, perhaps, I would be. I’m not saying I would vote for someone because they are woman but it does bring a certain energy to it. That’s all.

It’s not about appearance. It’s about knowing that any perceived barriers don’t exist.

This is a very dangerous game that Whoopi and Sheppard are playing. Would we be seeing this sort of rapture if Condi Rice was running? Doesn’t she look waaay more like these women than Obama? (That’s a rhetorical question, and I hate to insult Condi by comparing her to Whoppi the androgynous toad).
Yeah, well he may sorta look like you but he’s half white sweetheart. Maybe if your son marries a white girl you’ll have a grandchild who looks like Obama and then you can live happily ever after because seeing yourself in the mirror is all that matters when you’re an empty headed, vain, gossipy seat warmer on The View!
Are we supposed to feel sorry for poor, deprived Whoopi Goldberg whose dreams have not been fulfilled? My reserves of compassion must be all dried up because I’m not feeling a thing.

I can’t stand this show. AP, why are you always posting this tripe. I wonder if Goldberg and Shepherd took pride in Clarence Thomas’s appointment, or Colin Powell’s or Condi Rice’s? Or is it safe to assume that their “dream” only applies to black Democrats. And if I get Goldberg’s logic, correctly, blacks will always feel discriminated against until a black man is elected president. Is the same true for Asians? Latinos? Arabs? How about Jews? We’ve only had one Catholic president and he was assassinated. Or is that just a “non-black” way of looking at it?
Spolitics on April 24, 2008 at 9:07 PM
People need to recognize this mind-set for what it is. Hate will happily accept any kind of justification that humans are willing to give to it. Race? Yeah, that’s a good enough reason to hate. Gender? Sure. No problem.
If a person votes for or against a candidate simply because of his/her race or gender, some serious self-examination is in order for that voter. It suggests that the seeds of hatred have already been planted (and perhaps they’ve started to sprout, as well).
My collie says:
Jesus already did — and as for the rest of us, we must be willing to surrender our self-absorbed ways of thinking on a daily basis. If we are willing to do that, the Holy Spirit can give each of us a “presence of mind” or a “level of awareness” that will make it possible for us to live-up to that kind of exacting standard.

I’m in the same boat, never watch the show… but catch the snipets… I remember when Laura Ingraham was on the show, she took them to task… Too bad it has to be so lop-sided.. I mean Hasselbeck is the “token” concervative..it almost feels like she might be the scapegoat… they really don’t take her seriously…. I mean, could Hasselbeck get away with saying something as inflamitory (at least Rosie had passion behind what she said) as what Goldbrick said?
What if she said it was a very “black outlook” or that’s very “gay thing to say”? I don’t think so. There’s a double standard. The words might be sterile, but the spirit of the words is the same. It might as well have been, “My Grandmother had teh same fears as other white people.”
Obama, Goldbrick and others talk about unity, but they they themselves contiune the classification game. When will it end? Every time I hear Clinton, Obama, Sharpton, Jackson, Oprah, or thier cronies say, ” We’ve come a long way, but there’s still alot of work to do,” it makes me want to vomit. It’s such a defeatist statement. The play to the victim mentality… It makes me ask, “OK, when is enough?” Until all the white males are pushed into the sea?”
I think we need to rally for Michelle AND Laura to go on that would really be clock-cleaning time!

I think that is one reason blogs are popular (at least for me). I have NO IDEA what the blogger AND commenters, look like, in general. Old, young, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, if I agree with the opinion, and there are facts that back it up, then I agree. I could care less what someone looks like. I think that is why I like blogs, because I can read so many varieties of viewpoints and sometimes my mind is changed. And half the time I have no idea who changed it.

It’s way overdue.

There will be a Black president, and a woman, in time, but based on what they stand for/against, and not on identity politics. This will not be the year.
So far, Fred Thompson, interview with Hannity tonight, summed up best what/who Obama is/isn’t. He was very curageous doing so, and the lefties will rip him apart. But what he said made sense, word for word. The summary was that we don’t know this man, this late, and what we know isn’t different, or extremely different. Also, he echoed profitsbeard, that Obama isn’t qualified for the job.

Stop trying to come up with these rational arguments. All you’re doing is proving that it’s all just a big hustle. They do it because it works, and it won’t end until they can’t get away with it anymore. When Whoopi makes a remark like that, and Hasselbeck’s knees (mmmm) don’t buckle one iota, and she just fires back without having to do any fast PC damage prevention calculations, “Don’t try that tired old race-hustling crap with me Goldie. You always try that whenever you don’t have a decent counter-argument,” when that day comes it will be a short while before we just don’t hear it anymore.
From Robert L. Harris Jr., associate professor in the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University. [not exactly a bastion of white bias.]
This http://www.worldandi.com/public/1999/February/middle.cfm is from a long article, longer most readers here would care to read, but it is worth a fast skim. Even though he does his best to put a negative spin on things–blacks are totally advancing in all areas, but slower than whites–the picture is clear. In 10 years at the most, there will be sooo many middle/upper class blacks out there in the world, that all this bs is just going to stop provoking the intended effect. Just like after a few more cold winters like we’ve just had, and colder summers, all the Al Gore bloviating in the world won’t be able to make a convincing case for global warming. Seeing is believing, and when there are successful blacks everywhere you look, when Elizabeth makes the hypothetical rebuke that I created for her above, she’ll be the one getting the applause.

What Whoopi and flat earth lady said are both racist, and I’m sorry, if a white woman did this she’d be fired the next day. That’s one reason I don’t think Obama has a chance- most white Americans, when it comes down to it, won’t be forced into somehow feeling guilty when most of them haven’t done a racist thing in their lives. Houswives across the country are sitting there seeing two black women act flippantly racist and it’s as if nothing happened. That double standard makes my blood boil. I imagine I’m not alone.
TheBlueSite on April 25, 2008 at 12:59 AM
You’re kidding, right?
1). Do you really want to say the n word? I’ve never seen the need or felt a desire to.
2). There are historically white colleges, we just don’t call them that. They didn’t used admit people of African descent, hence the need for what are now “historically black” colleges.
3). And just how would white history month differ from all the other months of the year? But I do agree, black history should be integrated throughout the school year, not just to a month.

I was actually talking with someone about this recently. I think that until we can recognize that no one needs a month we will always be passing on feelings of victimization. I have been trying to get a very tastefully executed white history month for awhile where I work, but to no avail. The idea would be to celebrate some of the white people that helped with suffrage and equality throughout our history. I figure that eventually the idea of everyone getting a month would be ridiculous and we would look at each other and agree that none of us is individually entitled to special recognition.
.
Of course if I took my “white goggles” off for a second I would see just how racist that is…

Everytime these liberal bimbos open their mouth they’re lowering Obama’s numbers. They’re too stupid to understand that only a very small portion of this country has their deranged outlook of the world.
The more idiots like this who support Obama the better. If it’s OK for the black gal to vote for someone that looks like her, it’s OK for me to vote for McCain because he’s a white guy. Since blacks make up 15% of the population, how’s that going to work out for Obama?

I’m listening to that jerk Tom Oliphant on the Imus show claim that The View is a great show because the viewers are well read.

Isn’t this a television show for retards? And what is Hasselbeck, the Republican sacrificial lamb to be slaughtered on every episode like Kenny on South Park?…Personally, I’ve never seen more than 5 minutes of this garbage. That red headed drag queen can turn my stomach in less than 5 with her utter stupidity and ignorance of all things factual…My two cents……….

Also, Hasselbeck looks stunning even after having a child. She dropped the mommy weight quick, heh.

True story.
A co-worker of mine, an Obama supporter, stated that she is voting for Obama because she believes we have had enough white, old, men running the country and she wants something different. When another co-worker pointed out the obvious, “So, what you’re saying is, you’re voting for him simply because he is black and for no other reason?”, her response was “yes”.
There are MANY like her out there.

This isn’t a surprise to me. That’s the only reason TO vote for Obama unless you are a die-hard Marxist. The only accomplishment Obama has under his belt is that he’s black. Thinking people know this isn’t an accomplishment, but an immutable characteristic.
Obama supporters have rejected logic in favor of boosterism.

Considering it’s been old white men who came up with the Constitution, wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, came up with Civil Rights Act, fought wars on foreign soil for democracy and have been running the oldest government on the planet, I’d say the old white guys have done a pretty good job. The old white guy gets my vote this election though for only one real reason. He’s not a Marxist like the other two vote pandering phonies…………

Terryann, that ‘energy’ is called emotion. Most people vote that way, and that explains why our political system is filled with whores.

A really good comeback for her would be to ask if she would vote for Condi Rice, Alan Keyes, or J.C. Watts if they ran for president. Watch for the ‘deer in the headlights’ look.
