The Wright Stuff: ABC provides the context

Barack Obama needs another eruption of the Wright Stuff like he needs another video of him making fun of embittered Bible-thumping bigots, but at least the former appears inevitable. ABC News responds to Jeremiah Wright’s allegation that his words were taken out of context … by providing the context. And guess what? The context makes it look just as bad:
Rev. Jeremiah Wright says his sermons were deliberately taken out of context by the news media “for a political purpose” and to “paint me as some sort of fanatic.”
“When something is taken like a sound bite for a political purpose and constantly over and over again, looped in the face of the public. That’s not a failure to communicate,” he told Bill Moyers in his first interview since ABC News Good Morning America first broadcast portions of his sermons. The Moyers interview will be broadcast tomorrow evening on PBS.
Wright says the use of the his controversial statements- -saying the US brought on the 9/ll attacks and that Black Americans should sing God Damn America instead of God Bless America—were “unfair” and “unjust” and were used “for some very devious reasons.”
Once again, we have the complaint that quoting someone accurately amounts to devious behavior. Selectively quoting someone to remove context can be devious, but the only one doing that is … Barack Obama, at least twice so far in the campaign. He flat-out misquoted John McCain in claiming that McCain said he would want 100 years of war, and he recently put out an ad that completely mischaracterized McCain’s view on the economy by cutting out a significant portion where he said that times had gotten tough recently. So far, Obama hasn’t apologized for either, although he has stopped using at least the first claim lately.
So did Jeremiah Wright get the same treatment? Let’s look at the fuller context of his more controversial remarks. The first is his infamous sermon delivered just five days after 9/11, when Americans crowded into churches for comfort and resolve. What did Trinity United Church deliver? Emphases mine:
I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday, did anybody else see him or hear him? He was on Fox News, this is a white man, and he was upsetting the Fox News commentators to no end. He pointed out, did you see him John, a white man, and he pointed out, an ambassador, that what Malcolm X said when he got silenced by Elijah Mohammed was in fact true, America’s chickens are coming home to roost. We took this country by terror, away from the Sioux, the Apache, the Arowak, the Comanche, the Arapahoe, the Navajo. Terrorism. We took Africans from their country to build our way of ease and kept them enslaved and living in fear. Terrorism. We bombed Granada and killed innocent civilians, babies, non-military personnel. We bombed the black civilian community of Panama with stealth bombers and killed unarmed teenagers and toddlers, pregnant mothers, and hardworking fathers. We bombed Qaddafi’s home and killed his child. Blessed are they who bash your children’s head against a rock. We bombed Iraq. We killed unarmed civilians trying to make a living. We bombed a plant in Sudan to payback for the attack on our embassy, killed hundreds of hardworking people, mothers and fathers who left home to go that day not knowing that they would never get back home. We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye. Kids playing in the playground, mothers picking up children from school, civilians, not soldiers, people just trying to make it day by day.
We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and Black South Africans and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.
In other words, we had it coming. We have no right to complain about terrorism when America is apparently the greatest terrorist state in history. Do you notice whom Wright never blames? The actual terrorists who had just murdered 3,000 of his countrymen. And talking about context, notice that Wright never provides any context for the actions against Japan, Libya, Panama, and Granada. In his speech, we just up and decided one day to murder Qaddafi’s child.
Next up is the 2003 sermon in which he tells his flock to sing “God Damn America” in 2003:
The British government failed, the Russian government failed, the Japanese government failed, the German government failed, and the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese decent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps. When it came to treating her citizens of African descent fairly, America failed. The government put them in chains. She put them on slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton fields, put them in inferior schools, put them in sub-standard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education, and locked them into positions of hopelessness and helplessness. The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three strike law, and then wants us to sing God Bless America — no, no, no
Not God bless America, God damn America. That’s in the Bible, for killing innocent people. God damn America for treating her citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme. The United States government has failed the vast majority of her citizens of African descent. Think about this, think about this.
For every one Oprah, a billionaire, you’ve got 5 million blacks who out of work. For every one Colin Powell, a millionaire, you’ve got 10 million blacks who cannot read. For every one Condoskeeza Rice, you’ve got 1 million in prison. For every one Tiger Woods, who needs to get beat, at the Masters, with his cap, blazin’ hips playing on a course that discriminates against women. God has his way of bringing you up short when you get to big for your cap, blazin britches. For every one Tiger Woods, we got 10,000 black kids who will never see a golf course. The United States government has failed the vast majority of her citizens of African descent.
The government gives blacks drugs? This is the conspiracy theory that the Reagan administration’s CIA acted to flood American cities with crack cocaine so that the wave of violence it inspired would give the government an excuse to imprison black men. Somehow in that same thought, the government has conspired to keep black kids from golf courses. While it’s mostly true about illiteracy — in 2003, it would have been closer to 7 million than 10 million — Hispanics had a far higher illiteracy rate (44% to 23%) and illiterate whites were double the number of illiterate blacks (over 14 million).
Wright is a conspiracist, a demagogue, and at heart someone who doesn’t much like America. Like William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, he spends his venom on the US and embraces dictators like Fidel Castro and terrorists like Hamas, whose screeds he publishes in Trinity’s weekly newsletters. Far from absolving Obama, the context once again forces Obama to answer for the company he keeps.

I dont understand how he is even considered a viable candidate after his preacher for twenty years says this. I dont understand how he is a viable candidate after his wife opens his mouth and spouts hate. I dont understand how he is a viable candidate when he has been a senator for 3 years and 2 of those years he has been campaigning and hasnt done anything except vote present. I dont understand how he is a viable candidate when he has the most liberal voting record in the senate…even more so than ted kennedy and murtha…I just dont think I will ever understand

Words, just words?
No, there’s no larger context to explain away or mitigate these statements. They stand and fall on their own.
Mr. Obama grew up in, was raised in, and is stepped in this radical anti-American leftwing worldview.
While I don’t believe (I can’t be sure; and that itself may be disqualifying) that he holds such views, there is no evidence that he ever expressed opposition to such a view of the nation.
Silence, just silence?

Where to begin? The man is a loon. I had ancestors who walked the Trail of Tears and I really do not need lectures from Jeremiah Wright. I mean does he want to give Illinois back to the Indians? Hell no, he wants to live in his mansion and run his mouth.
Terrye on April 24, 2008 at 5:43 PM
Your first clue that major lying is about to occur is the recognition of the name Bill in conjunction with Moyers.
Rev, Wright has used his reprehensible rhetoric to mound up ill gotten gains very high and isn’t about to stop (why should he?), Moyers is just the next vehicle of opportunity and there will be many more.
Which community standards does Rev. Wright adhere too?

And to recap, the opposite of Blessing is Cursing, Mr. Wright, not damning.
Original sin brought us under the curse (pain in childbirth, hard labor for food), and at the time of the first covenant with Israel God again lays out what blessings he would pour out if they walk in his ways, and what the curses will be if they don’t. (The Israelites then agree to the covenant.)
Damning is being consigned to hell forever. Wright doesn’t want to call America back from her sinful ways, he wants America (which is really all of us bitter, bitter people) to go to hell. No real context for that.

Anyhow, I think Obama’s candidacy is giving us all a nice glimpse into how serious the marxist rot and racist resentments have spread throughout a lot of the black community. I don’t think that’s the “conversation on race” he was wanting to start, but so be it.

Theworldisnotenough on April 24, 2008 at 5:57 PM
I had no idea. Some days it’s hard to think of myself as an American, in this great nation, when there are so many people (as evidenced by all of the stories that have come out in this regard, people cheering the Rev Wright as he said ‘the US of KKK’ and ‘the govt is lying about how they created AIDS to kill black folk’ … the list goes on) .. so many people who indeed hate this country, and wake up and go to sleep every day grumbling about how ‘rich white people’ are out to get them all.
This really is sad, and I’ve never felt so strongly that our divisions run so deep, and that we might be a few controversial events away from more riots like we saw in LA after the Rodney King trial.

Wright is Obama’s mentor and “ispiration” to start a revolution to “bring an Empire to its knees”. Obama’s speech writers appear to put code words like “hijacked” and “bomber” in his prepared speeches, when those words were totally unnecessary.
The truth about Obama is painfully clear. Yet I have a sister-in law with an “Obama Mama” bumper sticker on her car. I’m glad this is getting MSM play, because some people will have to see it there in order to believe it.

Don’t let your heart be troubled by all this and ALWAYS think of yourself as a Proud American. This is no time to go wobbly. Being Black myself and obviously having been raised in a predominately Black neighborhood in the deep south, I have seen clowns like Wright come and go. They whip up the congregation into a white-hot frenzy (pardon the pun) about some perceived injustice the White man is heaping upon them.Rarely do men like Wright ask their congregation to look at themselves. In most cases they will not for fear of what will be found.
Needless to say, I do not attend nor am I a member of these types of churches, let alone spending 20 years sitting in their pews. If I had, I don’t think I would have been able to write this post.

I reply because you think I “have an moral obligation” to do so. I repeat that I do not ask for, wish for, or pray for the following, it is only my limited brainpower trying to figure out how the prophecy could come to pass.
Possible scandals:
1) McCain fortune traced to organized crime - Mob figures later implicated in Arizona savings and loan scandal
2) McCain linked to influence peddling claim - Broadcaster says nothing happened until he hired lobbyist, made donation.
What would happen if the pilots of Paxton’s jet came forward and said yes, McCain did have an affair with Vicki Iseman aboard the jet?
Possible health issues:
1) Skin cancer (he’s been treated for it before)
2) Heart (there are Bible codes showing John McCain - Not President, Heart Trouble - Affliction) Now, I believe that Bible Codes can show more than one possible outcome, so just because there is a Bible code for something doesn’t guarantee that it will happen. I believe it is more like one of those “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, where you make choices that affect the flow of the story, but no matter what choice you make, the outcome of those choices is still recorded in the book. It is amazing to see how many past historical events show up in the Bible Code. And statisticians have shown that the probability of it being “coincidental” is so minimal as to be essentially zero. (Just like the probability of live being the result of random Darwinian evolution is essentially zero).

Obama must really dread the drive home from church each Sunday, hoping that his kids won’t ask what “ridin’ dirty” means or some other sermon related awkward silence inducing question. If the Wright issue ever becomes one that questions his judgement as a parent for bringing his kids to that church, then he’s really done.

Jim Jones and Hitler killed people. That is not from God, that is from Satan. God works through His people, Satan works through his people. God is love, and my heart is filled with love for people, not hate.
Mine. And the old testament punishment for false prophets was stoning. So you should understand that I am not saying this flippantly. I take this matter very seriously. I didn’t ask God to make me a prophet. It was His decision to give this prophecy to me and then tell me to share it. I am being obedient to what He has told me to do. The only explanation I can come up with for the question of “Why me?” is that I prayed in late January for God to guide me in a possible occupational change. He guided me, but not in the way I expected…I thought it would be in the area of business or Information Technology, but He had other plans. I said, “Yes, Lord. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven.”
I am an ordinary man. If you don’t think this whole thing overwhelms me, you are sadly mistaken. I am like many of the ordinary men that God has used in the past to accomplish His plans. I am well aware of the multiple New Testament warnings about false prophets in the end times. I have no desire to be a false prophet, and that is why I was reluctant at first to do what God was calling me to do. I was tempted to say, like they did, that I am not the right man for the job. But I’ve learned enough to be obedient. God has told me that false prophets lead people away from Jesus Christ of Nazareth. This prophecy is for the glory of Jesus Christ of Nazareth and to draw people to Him in these end times. Many other people who have studied Biblical prophecies see them coming true in world news events on a very regular basis. No one knows exactly when Jesus is coming back, but He most certainly is coming back, and we all need to be ready before then.
God has had enough of people mocking Him and His people. The time is near. It could be several more years away, so don’t “park at the rapture bus stop”. Continue living your life, but live it for God’s glory, and try to get as many people as you can onto life rafts before the Titanic goes down.
As Forrest Gump said,
Red Pill on April 24, 2008 at 7:40 PM
The Palestinian government failed, the Russian government failed, the Iranian government failed, the German government failed, and the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she tried showing them how to use small tracks of land for farming instead of hunting and the rest is history. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese decent fairly in the mist of a war with Japan, she compromised. She put them in internment prison camps and fed them, clothed them and genuinely despised feeling the need to do so and years later admitted it was not the brightest of moves. When it came to treating her citizens of African descent fairly, America fought a war amongst itself of which millions died so Africans would no longer be enslaved legally. The government put themselves in one of the most precarious moments of American history. She put them on the front of the bus, put them on the path to voting, put them in cotton fields to work for actual wages, put them in schools, put them in standard housing, paid them for scientific experiments, put them in paying jobs, put them as having equal protection under the law, kept on fighting to make sure they had access to a higher education, and unlocked the road blocks that kept them into positions of hopelessness and helplessness. The government gives everyone the opportunity, builds bigger and broader avenues, passes a free trade law, and then wants us to sing God Bless America — yes, yes, yes….Amen.
God bless America, God bless America! That’s in the Bible, for helping innocent people. God bless America for treating her citizens as liberty loving human beings. God bless America for as long as she acts in God’s good grace and she is supreme. The Democratic Party has failed the vast majority of her citizens of African descent. Think about this, think about this. Vote Republican!
For every one Oprah, a billionaire, you’ve got 5 million blacks who have an example of how far you can go. For every one Colin Powell, a millionaire, you’ve got 10 million blacks who want to be like him and look up to him. For every one Condoleezza Rice, you’ve got 1 million who are working hard to follow in her foot steps. For every one Tiger Woods, we got 10,000 black kids who will want to play on a golf course. The United States government has nothing to do with the failure of the vast majority of her citizens of African descent, it’s the Democratic Party that has been our oppressor from day one…

The context is racism. Plain and simple.
He is no man of God, nor is he a man of the people.
Wright is a racist, not controversial. Racist.

“Reverend” Wright as quote by Ed:
I’ll point out that “skeeza” is ghetto slang for a whore, too, so Wright knew what he was saying here. What a sweetheart of a guy.

Devil’s advocate: Since he began the Roost rant with a quote, couldn’t the argument be made that what follows aren’t necessarily his view?

I think, right or wrong, you wouldn’t be shunned here. Maybe a little ribbing if it doesn’t pan out, I would guess ;)

Fred Thompson is skewering Obama and Wright on Hannity/Colmes! This needs to be played in Minneapolis!

Poor old Wright, hung on his own petard.
Wonder why ABC is so schitzo, that they would provide the damning context Wright cannot refute. They have been a part of this farce all the way.
Barry O, you is in for a rough ride. I don’t think you are smart enough to survive or even lose with dignity…your fundamental buffoonery will hang you just as sure as your mentor Wright is hung by his trail of night soil.
Barry, when the only people you talk to think exactly as you do, you can forget how ignorant you really are, individually and as a group. Call it intellectual incest, where the lack of new ideas, like genes, produces defective thinkers who cannot assimilate ideas or information that does not support the “known”.
Your utter blather about marginal tax rates with Gibson on ABC amply demonstrated your limited vision and inability to deal with information contrary to your “knowns”. That is a bad recommendation for a POTUS. Hitler was like that, y’know.
Marx died a long time ago, and even in writing Das Kapital had lost touch with reality and was writing about situations which had ceased to exist due to free markets. Marx also was so ignorant of current events he didn’t realize he was already out of date, instead of “progressive”.
We will see what we will see.

hmm, no mention of Kosovo in his rant.

An Uber-crank, who, if he were wearing these blithering, incoherent rants written in crayon on a cardboard poncho while screaming “Batwhizz! Superior fizz!” on a noisy subway platform, soaked in his own stale urine, would make more sense.
That they let loons like this get into pulpits is the shame of the stuporous and venomous congregations.
Obama, especially, included.
And Michelle.
(Their poor little kids.)

There’s no possible way to, legitimately, incorporate bitterness into the Christian life and remain in fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
Our only option is to pray earnestly for this Pastor and his congregation. DD
