Open thread: Pennsylvania; Update: Fox News calls it for Hillary

Drudge says it’s 52-48 Hillary as of 5 p.m. ET; Fox News should have exits by demographic group at 6 p.m. I can’t find the data Marc Ambinder’s citing but I’ll take his word on it: “25% of Clinton supporters say they’d vote for McCain in the general election; 17% of Obama supporters say they’d vote for McCain in the general election.” Plus, a whiff of Chaos from the AP:

One in 10 voters changed their party registration since the start of the year so they could vote in the hotly contested primary, which was open only to registered Democrats. About half of the party-switchers had been registered Republicans and the rest had been unaffiliated with either party.

One in five say race was a key factor in their vote, another one in five say gender was. Standby for updates galore.

Update: Here’s the complete exit poll data set from CNN.

Keep in mind most of the voters in this contest are democrats so chaos isnt an operation its a way of life in that party.

William Amos on April 22, 2008 at 5:54 PM

52-48 is not good news

I’ll be praying for a 10-point Clinton lead which is what we need to keep this slugfest going until the convention.

Pax americana on April 22, 2008 at 5:55 PM

I wouldn’t put much stock in exit polls. The polls are open until 8:00 and a lot of people vote after work.

My husband is a Democrat and we got a robocall this a.m. from Michelle Obama and a visit at midday from an Obama volunteer making sure he votes. Pretty impressive. We also got a ton of mail from Obama, a little from Hillary, and a few calls from Hillary. There were even Obama signs at my daughter’s elementary school this morning and it isn’t a polling place. This is in Bucks County.

I’ll wager that Obama kicks ass in Philadelphia and Bucks County, does pretty well in Montgomery and Chester Counties, and gets massacred everywhere else in the state.

We have truly gone through the looking glass into bizarro world when remarks like this are being made here:

Fox News says Hillary wins big among gun owners, 58/42, and churchgoers, 59/41.

and

More good news — Hillary wins big again among late deciders (because of the debate?), 58/42.

Hillary’s voters are working.

Little Boy Obama’s voters came in their jammies (sounds like bloggers, huh)

faraway on April 22, 2008 at 6:33 PM

In fact, there are more reasons to distrust exit polls on this race than usual - including a magnified “in-person” Bradley-Wilder effect, and also including an enthusiastic Obama-voter vias. Bitter people like Hillary voters and Operation Chaoticists bow their heads and walk on when they spot an exit poll interviewer.

CK MacLeod on April 22, 2008 at 6:34 PM

Julie NIXON EISENHOWER is supporting Obama.

I can’t take any more. This is nuts!

stenwin77 on April 22, 2008 at 6:35 PM

In Pennsylvania, from CNN

In what could be a troubling sign, only 38 percent of voters said they’d be satisfied if either candidate was the nominee. Meanwhile 32 percent said they’d be satisfied only if Clinton wins, while 25 percent said they’d be satisfied only if Obama wins.

McCain was seen grinning sheepishly.

Entelechy on April 22, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Operation Chaos,is there any new information coming in from the front!

In the fog of voting, has there been a clear cut slaughter,
or is it turning into a slow political bleed!haha.

ABCNews story today:

During the course of the Pennsylvania primary battle, the candidates went bowling and drank beer, with Clinton going one step further and downing shots of whiskey and appearing more comfortable at times than her opponent.

You go, grrrl.

leftnomore on April 22, 2008 at 7:00 PM

Can it be that exit polls are the only thing it the world that doesn’t get leaked?

What makes them so sacred?

Why even TRY to not leak them?

If I did/funded some and didn’t hold them until the polls closed why should I be criticized?

Pythagoras on April 22, 2008 at 7:52 PM

I wanted to ask people’s opinion here about my Penn. voting experience today. I went to a vote in an overwhelmingly liberal district, but for some reason there was a guy who happened to be black who was trolling for any evidence that some bigotry happened at my precinct. I’m just so sick of the racism-mongers that I just said “F*** you” when he approached me with concerns that I’m a victim of discrimination. What was going through my head is Ezra Levant’s statement that we shouldn’t be nice to the fascists who wish to control us. Perhaps, I should have been more eloquent in my disdain for him. I suppose if I had it do over again, I probably say “I have only utter contempt for anyone stupid enough to look for evidence of racism in this most leftist of districts. Nor do I think you’re going to find evidence of discrimination in voting in central PA.”

I think Hillary’s numbers are suffering from a bit of primary fatigue settling in. You can’t blame Democrat voters for feeling a bit shell-shocked and weary of the bruising primary season. I wonder if a certain weary resignation isn’t settling in… they might feel a bit queasy about Barry O, especially after the last couple of weeks, but they’re tired of the circus and they’re ready to settle on him as their candidate. Call it the Bob Dole Express, and we all know what the last stop on that particular railroad is…
