Bill Clinton: Obama played the race card on me!

posted at 10:20 am on April 22, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Has Bill Clinton lost his mind, or does he want to kneecap his wife’s run for the presidency? Yesterday in an interview with WHYY, he vents his frustration at the accusation of playing the race card in South Carolina. He reminds Susan Phillips that he has his offices in Harlem, “which voted for Hillary”, and that 1.4 million of his best friends are people of color.

Warning — this is mildly NSFW, as Bill forgot to hang up the phone at the end when speaking to a colleague (via Memeorandum):

Whether or not he feels he has to “that that s*** from anybody”, Clinton knows he’s playing in the big leagues, and knows what the rules are. Clinton has made a career out of playing the race card, and in fact plays it again here. He wants to go back to the silly meme of being the nation’s “first black president” by accusing the man who might actually become that of relying on identity politics to smear him. That’s a gas coming from the same campaign that has tried to use gender politics since 1992. Or perhaps no one remembers “soccer moms”?

The bigger question is what Clinton hopes to gain. This won’t go viral enough to hurt in Pennsylvania, but North Carolina is right around the corner. Crying about Obama’s identity politics will only make the divide more bitter and lose Hillary ground. If it picks up ground in upcoming Rust Belt states, it will also remind superdelegates that they can expect to lose the African-American vote if they support Hillary over Obama in Denver.

Bill’s FCC violation at the end of this clip shows what most have suspected for months. He has become a loose cannon whose actions hurt more than help. His leash obviously needs more shortening.

When they gonna leave our people alone? Huh?

The identity politics sets up Barack to lose; the Hildebeast can then try again in 2012 against a one-term McCain.

michaelo on April 22, 2008 at 10:25 AM

This is hilarious. Now there is no doubt that he is conspiring to ruin his wife’s campaign. Two idiotic candidates for the democrats.

does he want to kneecap his wife’s run for the presidency

This assumes that Bill actually sees Hillary’s campaign as, hers.

KrisinNE on April 22, 2008 at 10:29 AM

They are playing the race card in the most shameful way. Sitting next to a black guy wondering if it wouldn’t be just grand to elect a woman president, which would send a refreshing message to… you know, those countries who haven’t had female politicians at the top level, like, uhmm… isn’t there one in Africa or something? This clearly was an obvious invitation for him to respond in the most humanly natural way, which he was right not to do.

The scary thing about this whole Clinton Circus circa 2008 is turning on MS-DNC to watch “Hardboiled” with Chrissy, and seeing him show clips of Hillary rallies.

The people in the audience are actually buying what she is selling. Un-fricking-believable.

Del Dolemonte on April 22, 2008 at 10:32 AM

I feel Bill’s pain. He’s got the jackboot of the MAN on his neck.

Everytime a proud white black man tries to be a shameless liar stand up for the oppressed the MAN strikes him down.

God bless you Billy Jeff.

that s*** from anybody

Thinks he’s Augustus, acts like Caligula.

If she would have dumped this creep she would have wrapped up the nomination back in February.

Why is the former President’s face so red all the time?

Poor Bill. I feel bad for him. He is always being victimized.

Isn’t “sh*t” a racist innuendo about drugs?

Is B.J. implying that Obama is a pusher?

This wrasslin’ match in the Dem WWE is fun!

Keep flappin’ dem gums, Billy Jeff!

Slick’s thin veneer of charm and sophistication is sliding off. The white trash center is getting hard to miss, even for his worshippers. Imagine how horrified Lanny Davis must feel.

Or did the radio station get to the dump box in time?

He was the first Black president after all, and don’t you forget it, bub.

Neo on April 22, 2008 at 10:47 AM

What is going on with him? Don’t get me wrong, I hated Bill Clinton when he was POTUS, but he used to be the master at playing these kinds of games. He reinvented the rules of politics and campaigning. He liked campaigning so much, that he pretty much spent his entire two terms in office campaigning. What has happened to that man? Is he losing his marbles? Was it really other people who pulled his strings and made his campaigns work? Why can’t he maintain that veneer that he used to be so good at keeping up?

I love it! Within 12 months two icons of the Democratic party have deminished their reputations and likely demolished their legacy.

To go for the hat trick we need to get Ted Kennedy talking….

What a class act. He can talk all day long, but he’s still going to have white skin when the discussion is over.

Bill Clinton’s Racist [post]Card.

That post went viral in January; in one day it racked up 17,842 hits.

And none from Insty, either.

Serr8d on April 22, 2008 at 10:58 AM

The first rule of race card is that you don’t talk about the race card, Democrats.

And Bill, you’re white. The moment you do anything at all that a black politician doesn’t want you to do, you’re a racist. No discussion, no question, no whining, just get with the program and start the apology tour.

The Clintons haven’t learned anything.

NoDonkey on April 22, 2008 at 10:59 AM

McCain has too much of a temper to lead; we need Bubba back in the White House.

saint kansas on April 22, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Bill Clinton can’t help himself. He just has to keep lying. I thought his lie about Hillary’s Bosnia’s lie would make this guy just shut up for a while. But he is at again. He starts bragging that his office is in Harlem. That was not voluntary. Clinton originally chose a plush office on Central Park South in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Clinton’s original office plan would have kept him as far from Harlem or the African-American population as possible. It was only after a firestorm of criticism of Bill Clinton’s plans for the taxpayers to subsidize him like he is a king that he decided to put his office in Harlem. It was not voluntary. The guy just has a sociopathic need to reinvent his personal history. He is really scary.

And if Hillary is selected, how is he going to quell the race riots around the country?…they have no choice, they have to select Obama.

revolutionismyname on April 22, 2008 at 11:33 AM

Of COURSE Obama played the “race card”, it’s what Democrats DO for crying out loud. Racism is a major power base for the Democrats. They champion themselves as the party of the minority and use that to “lock in” the votes of many minority demographics (hispanic and black voters in particular). If there is no racism, then there is no reason to be the party of the hispanic or black voter. So it becomes in the interest of the Democrats to ensure that racism stays alive so that they can continue to claim to oppose it.

Without racism the Democrats would shrivel up and die. Heck, they have done such a good job at that little trick that many people believe Martin Luther King Jr. was a Democrat.

And such an outrage and ruckus was not heard across the land since the second after the first kid to figure out how to make a snowball discovers that the other kids all figured it out too, by the impact on the back of his neck that sends snow under his clothes.

Wind Rider on April 22, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Well, if NC believes he will play the race card at a moment’s notice, Hillary will probably get some support from people on the fence in NC. Most people in NC don’t like race hustlers because we see them all the time.

“His leash obviously needs more shortening.” If I were HRC, (shudder, shudder), I’d remove his vocal cords, but that’s cruel, even for a bad dog like Billy Jeff.
I say: let ‘er rip, BJ! This is a lot more fun than watching BO self-destruct in that last ‘debate’.
(Did i heard him say something about Seminole voters? I wasn’t aware that that tribe was a voting block. ;-)

I vote for kneecapping – I have been saying since the SC primary that Billy Jeff was sabotauging his wife’s campaign. He hates her and fears she would be a more popular president than he.

Rush just aired a tape of the Clinton comments.

Millions have just heard Clinton shooting off his filthy mouth.

jeff_from_mpls on April 22, 2008 at 1:22 PM

My God, by the time North Carolinians go to vote, I fully expect Bill Clinton to be telling them he was one of the African-Americans denied a place to sit at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro in 1960.

jon1979 on April 22, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Stepping back from this for a second, and getting the big picture…

A former President (the highest official in the land) who served two terms, ineligible for office, campaigning for President instead of just melting into the background of history…

So his wife can be President.

There’s just something, I don’t know, weird and unnatural about the whole thing. It’s surreal, as though the Presidency of the United States is something only to be coveted and not at all to be revered.

I guess after Hillary’s two terms are done, the goal is to get Chelsea elected to Senate, and then President as well? Will these people NOT GO AWAY?

fossten on April 22, 2008 at 1:48 PM

Ahhh, to recall the helplessness the RNC felt back in 2006, with the prospect of Hillary running for president. Who’d have thought this would get fun? I am taking this sh*t just fine, thanks to Bill.

He has three black appointees:

Joslin Elders: Surgeon General (whom he fired)

Vernon Jordan: Whom he used to get Monica in the WH so he could have sex with her.

Ron Brown: Commerce Sec., Co-conspirator in ChinaGate, who he had KILLED (Google it) when he threatened to go public when they would not help him with his personal scandals.

A few weeks or months ago, Ellen Goodman published a column where she said the Dem party had an “embarrassment of riches” in their primary while the Rep party just had embarrassment.
