Ephron: Which does Pennsylvania hate more, blacks or women?

If you thought that Barack Obama’s Crackerquiddick remarks in San Francisco were some kind of anomaly, one read of Nora Ephron’s latest column will disabuse bitter xenophobic gun-grabbing Jesus freaks middle Americans of that notion. Ephron gives Pennsylvanians a heavy dose of Hollywood heartburn in her analysis of the primary race tomorrow at the Huffington Post. As she sees it, it boils down to PA voters deciding whom they hate least, and she includes a heaping dollop of her own hate on top:

Here’s another thing I don’t like about this primary: now that there are only two Democratic candidates, it’s suddenly horribly absolutely crystal-clear that this is an election about gender and race. This may have always been true, but weeks ago it wasn’t so obvious — once upon a time there were eight candidates, and although six of them withered away, their presence in the campaign managed to obscure things. Even around the time of Ohio, when there were primarily three candidates, the outlines were murky, because Edwards was still in there, picking up votes from all sectors.

But now there are two and we’re facing Pennsylvania and whom are we kidding? This is an election about whether the people of Pennsylvania hate blacks more than they hate women. And when I say people, I don’t mean people, I mean white men. How ironic is this? After all this time, after all these stupid articles about how powerless white men are and how they can’t even get into college because of overachieving women and affirmative action and mean lady teachers who expected them to sit still in the third grade even though they were all suffering from terminal attention deficit disorder — after all this, they turn out (surprise!) to have all the power. (As they always did, by the way; I hope you didn’t believe any of those articles.)

To put it bluntly, the next president will be elected by them: the outcome of Tuesday’s primary will depend on whether they go for Hillary or Obama, and the outcome of the general election will depend on whether enough of them vote for McCain. A lot of them will: white men cannot be relied on, as all of us know who have spent a lifetime dating them. And McCain is a compelling candidate, particularly because of the Torture Thing. As for the Democratic hope that McCain’s temper will be a problem, don’t bet on it. A lot of white men have terrible tempers, and what’s more, they think it’s normal. …

I spent the weekend listening to one commentator after another saying that Obama has it locked up, it’s a done deal. I dunno. Hillary is the true whack-a-mole and if she survives on Tuesday, it will be a whole new ballgame. And it will be all because of white men. Plus ca change.

I’ve seen this construct before. People excuse their hatred and prejudice by claiming a privilege through dating members of a group they want to stereotype. Oh, I can talk that way about black men/Asian women/white men because I’ve dated some of them. Unless she’s dated all white men, it’s still prejudice, but it’s a typical expression of hatred for a group for which political correctness allows to express that kind of mindless stereotyping.

And as with Obama, the stereotype is that of everyone outside of Hollywood, Manhattan, San Francisco, and perhaps parts of Seattle as being virulent bigots and misogynists. Ephron sees America as Obama did in his private fundraiser on Billionaires Row in Frisco — as a few oases of enlightened thought surrounded by vast deserts of mouthbreathers. The elitist sneer jumps off the page, and while it doesn’t contain any references to religion or guns — proving that she’s marginally brighter than Obama — it reeks of the elitist, snobby idiocy that afflicts the urban hard Left.

The candidate that wins Pennsylvania tomorrow will do so by generating the most loyalty, not by generating the least amount of hatred. The only hatred seen in this campaign appears to be focused in Hollywood, San Francisco, and other so-called “liberal” salon. Their hatred for middle America and its values will reflect on their candidates this fall.

It’s never about issues with these people.

It’s always about identity politics.

How juvenile.

‘they didn’t pick me because I’m a woman/black.’

Maybe they didn’t pick you because you have bad judgment and/or don’t have a moral center.

What a skank! What a work of self-parody. It’s so stupid I’m not even offended.

The GOP should pass out this piece to white men in PA as a way of reminding them why they didn’t like the Dems in the first place.

Notice how these myopic morons never factor in the political persuasion of the candidates. People hate leftists, not “blacks” and “women”.

miles on April 21, 2008 at 7:46 AM

So if black voters went from 90% Obama support to 90% Hillary support and threw the outcome to Clinton, then they’d have the power, right? So it’s like all groups have power when they don’t blindly support one candidate or party? But, but, that would mean that whatever group it is bears at least some responsibility for it’s own marginalization. To steal a line from Nora, “I’ll have what she’s having.” I don’t know what she’s on, but it’s some good stuff.

D0WNT0WN on April 21, 2008 at 7:48 AM

It’s not just about gender and race. Everyone’s talking about this “elitist” thing as if it’s something new—or as if it’s new that they’re revealing it.

Let’s not forget what happened immediately after Kerry lost in 2004. Remember when exit polls revealed “values voters”? While conservatives laughed their way back to the White House, the MSM was dispatching reporters to flyover country to study the natives. They couldn’t even discern how comical they were in talking like they needed a passport to go to Kansas. [No word on whether they got their shots before departing!]

The Dems were just as funny, openly declaring that they needed to learn how to “talk about faith”. They all started quoting Scripture—LOL! That lasted about….oh, til the next campaign cycle when they ditched Leiberman and pandered to the KosKids.

They just keep digging that hole deeper and deeper because they simply cannot contain their elitist contempt for traditional values. It was alway thus and ever will be.

jeanneb on April 21, 2008 at 7:49 AM

white men cannot be relied on, as all of us know who have spent a lifetime dating them.

But black men can always be relied upon; just ask Obama’s mama . . . oh, wait . . . .

But hey, you can’t blame Ephron for being bitter. The woman has been cheated on and dumped by more white men than will probably vote in Tuesday’s primary. And anyone who had to endure being married to Carl Bernstein deserves to be cut a little slack (who wouldn’t be bitter after an experience like that?). But I do feel a little sorry for Nora’s sons; it can’t be easy for those two white men to have a mother who feels so little respect for them.

AZCoyote on April 21, 2008 at 7:49 AM

A lot of them will: white men cannot be relied on, as all of us know who have spent a lifetime dating them.

This woman never met my husband.

And McCain is a compelling candidate, particularly because of the Torture Thing.

He’s a compelling candidate because he has this tendency to not talk down to his base.

As for the Democratic hope that McCain’s temper will be a problem, don’t bet on it. A lot of white men have terrible tempers, and what’s more, they think it’s normal. …

That’s about a few words away from saying that all white men are abusers.

Feminists piss me off. They’re so mad at men that they can’t see what’s beyond their nose.

I do love the bit about how she knows all about white men because she’s dated them all her life. Yup, they’re all alike… just like black men are all alike… and women are all alike…and hispanics are all alike…and asians are all alike… but terrorists? No way!!! Don’t you know that profiling is wrong? You idiot bigot you. ;-) But have no worry, all the snobs will soon come together to hate the white guy as one. Nice way to spin a campaign, huh? And what’s worse, all these snobs think they are oh-so intelligent. Well they must be… the way they constantly know how people “really” think. ;-)

On minorities let’s shut the door,
’cause my taxes are so high,

Hening on April 21, 2008 at 7:59 AM

For the Democrats in the “conservative-T”, the race in PA is more about the candidates’ attitude, age, and honesty (or lack thereof) than it is about race and gender.

Hillary somehow gets an edge on those counts and will likely trounce Obama in most of the counties in the state.

There may be a few old timers who don’t want to vote for a minority or a woman, but I think that will pretty much be a wash.

Anyway, I’ve pretty much had it with these flyover jaggoffs spouting off about what a bunch of ignorant hicks we are, but it can do nothing but push more people to McCain in the long run.

Agree w/V.S. 08 – her post is so lame and caricaturesque that it’s more sad than offensive. To the extent that she is influential or speaks for a whole group of people, she and her hateful writings ought to be given the widest possible exposure, though I’m not sure even the putative left believes that blacks per se or women per se are really The Issue with “flyover country” (as opposed to their politics, which I know sticks in their craw).

RD on April 21, 2008 at 8:14 AM

I believe Nora’s last major Hollywood work was the movie version of “Bewitched”, which not only Pennsylvanians but just about every living organism on the planet hated, so she should have a good idea of what that emotion is about.

(What makes Ephron smug attitude so insufferable is she made her way to Hollywood out of the New York pop culture literary scene where her main claim to fame was viciously savaging Carl Bernstein in a book after he cheated on her. That means she combines the East Coast “We’re smarter than all the flyover hicks” ethos with both feminist street cred and the West Coast film colony’s egocentric habit of trying to prove they’re worthy of respect by either opening their mouths or putting fingers to keyboard on topics they have no expertise in whatsoever.)

That’s not entirely true. She grew up in Beverly Hills, the daughter of screenwriters. Ironically, her father authored a screenplay based on her character and Sandra Dee was cast in the role.

Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail were charming movies. She’s just a very poor political pundit as she can’t write about serious topics seriously.
Her column makes absolutely no sense since the backlash against Barry the black male candidate (who has made his race the issue for his entire adult life) will most likely result in the white female candidate winning the PA primary, which should make her feminist heart leap with joy.

It’s also worth noting that the white males she’s most familiar with are members of the Jewish intelligentsia, a far cry from the bitter and ‘powerful’ men she’s kvetching about in Pennsylvania.

TheSitRep on April 21, 2008 at 8:39 AM

The sad part about this is, she almost makes (or at least deals with the consequences of) a point that Ed Morrisey made here on Hot Air recently, supported by the pollsters: that, after decades of white men ostensibly courting the “black vote” or the “women’s vote”, a black and a woman candidate – with their respective identity voting blocs locked up tight – are now, for the first time ever, fighting over the white man’s vote.

And, if Ephron’s the bellwether, detesting every moment of it. Quel indigni-tay!

And being vocal and public about the hatred.

And *then* wondering why there seems to be trouble in Paradise… hmmm… don’t those cursed white men (@%#^& $$$$!!!) know what’s best for them?

A shame isn’t it: to be torn between the need to demonize white men and the need to win an election for The People.

I liked “You’ve Got Mail” but it pales in comparison to “The Shop Around The Corner” which it is a remake of. “Sleepless In Seattle” is okay. “When Harry Met Sally” is a fine movie, but is overrated simply because of THAT scene (you know which one I mean).

I’m voting for Clinton, but my motives are cynical.

I meant to say the general election, but it would be difficult for me to pull the lever for that woman even in the primary.

Because I would never forgive myself if the vampiress survived the primary and won in the general.

Until the stake has been driven into the heart, the movie is not over.

NoDonkey on April 21, 2008 at 9:05 AM

I wonder if this ditz would still be on Barry’s side if she knew he said this.

“He decried Clinton’s “tactics of Washington,” in which she attacks him with every possible weapon. “She’s got the kitchen sink flying, the china flying. The buffet is coming at me …”

The answer: of course she would, Barry is black.

I’ll give you those two movies (in fact, I’m probably going to have to take two female friends on a visit to Katz Deli because of her movie when I’m in New York this summer). But it was the evisceration of Bernstein in “Heartburn” that propelled her into feminist icon status on the intellectual left (which liked what Carl did to Richard Nixon, but not so much Carl himself). That made her an “expert” on men and female empowerment and gave her the right to prattle on about topics like the inner thoughts of sexist Keystone State voters.

And McCain is a compelling candidate, particularly because of the Torture Thing.

Is she referring to the torture that Sen. McCain endured for five years while fighting for his country? This is a vile, hate-filled excuse for a human being and the only torture here is reading her nonsensical screed.

Like I have mentioned on this site a few times already, it is always acceptable to bash white men, white boys and Southerners. Where is the outrage for these racist and sexist bile she is spewing? Let a white man make similar comments about blacks, woman or a minority and the left would seize with hypocritical outrage. Sorry but I feel dirty now after reading this feces.

Claypigeon on April 21, 2008 at 2:52 PM

Even worse: I think she misused “whom.”

I’m not sure she did. While “who are we kidding?” is by far the most common usage, the rule for “whom” is that you’d use it whenever you would use the word “him” if the sentence weren’t a question. “Whom did you go to the movies with?” “I went to the movies with him.” So “whom are we kidding?” is gramatically correct, even if it’s not something anyone would actually say in spoken English.
