Obama’s board helped fund handgun-ban efforts

Lately, the political world has buzzed about Barack Obama’s tenure with the Woods Foundation, where he worked with domestic terrorist William Ayers and which issued a $75,000 grant to Yasser Arafat toady Rashid Khalidi. However, Politico has found another paid foundation gig which may raise even more questions about Obama’s positions and honesty. While working as a director at the Joyce Foundation, the organization funneled almost $3 million in grants to political groups opposing gun rights:

Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has worked to assure uneasy gun owners that he believes the Constitution protects their rights and that he doesn’t want to take away their guns.

But before he became a national political figure, he sat on the board of a Chicago-based foundation that doled out at least nine grants totaling nearly $2.7 million to groups that advocated the opposite positions.

The foundation funded legal scholarship advancing the theory that the Second Amendment does not protect individual gun owners’ rights, as well as two groups that advocated handgun bans. And it paid to support a book called “Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns.”

Obama’s eight years on the board of the Joyce Foundation, which paid him more than $70,000 in directors fees, do not in any way conflict with his campaign-trail support for the rights of gun owners, Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for Obama’s presidential campaign, asserted in a statement issued to Politico this week.

Seven of the grants were awarded when Obama served on the board. Where did the money go?

  • $2.5 million went to the Violence Policy Center, which has campaigned for a national ban on all handguns.
  • $20,000 paid to publish Every Handgun Is Aimed at You: The Case for Banning Handguns
  • $10,000 went to another gun-banning group, Handgun-Free America

Does anyone else see a pattern? If Obama doesn’t want to ban handguns, he certainly chose the wrong foundation to help run. Once again, his track record speaks in opposition to his blandishments towards the benighted and embittered gun owners that he wants to rescue through bigger federal government.

Illegals, Islam, The Weathermen and Reverand Wright concur.

Every week another revelation about Barry. It makes you wonder if he saw all this stuff (Wright, anti-guns, ect) as a problem that he should prepare a decent explanation for. It sure seems like he never considered it at all.
If the press did a decent job of vetting this guy, he wouldn’t have come this far, in my opinion. The dem’s have got to be worried about any other skeletons so it doesn’t look like, in the long run, the MSM has done him any favors.

Wait a minute? You mean you are going to talk about another mere DISTRACTION? Typical neo-con. When are you going to start talking about substantive issues like how much everyone hates Bush. Or how sad everyone is that any American dies much less an American soldier doing his duty to country with honor. How about how much money he’s going to take from those mean ole rich people - he’s just like Robin Hood that ole Barry, but he ain’t no fairy tale.

Typical bitter conservative clinging to those guns again to provide another distraction.

A white paper on his website states: “As a former constitutional law professor, Barack Obama … greatly respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms” as well as “the passion that hunters and anglers have for their sport.” It says: “He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns for the purposes of hunting and target shooting.”

It’d be good if we all fully get hold of the idea that Barry’s so slick he makes Willy look like sandpaper.

I don’t see one word in there about self defense.

And you know what? I’ve never owned a gun in my life. I could probably count on my fingers the times I’ve ever shot a gun and have some left over. In other words, I’ve just never personally had a dog in the fight of the whole issue of guns.

But you don’t go f**king with my Constitution, bub, and I think the Founders understood good and well that on some level the power of government that can corrupt men who wield it is held in check to no small degree by the idea of an armed citizenry.

This guy Barry’s bad news. I hope the Dems nominate him and he takes a bigger drubbing than McGovern. ‘Cause I’m thinking he may just be as far left of McGovern as McGovern was of Reagan.

Today is Patriots Day. It celebrates the patriots at Lexington and Concord who, when they learned of the Crowns intent to disarm them and their militias in order to more fully subjugate them, fired the shot heard round the world. The second amendment is framed about this day. Hunting and target shooting is nowhere to be found in any of the language. To claim you are a constitutional scholar and not understand this fundemental element is pathetic.

The Joyce Foundation continues to fund studies also through Harvard Medical School-oddly, seems like the same authors are at work and the conclusion is always the same-ban guns for one reason or another.

The last study was technically flawed, using data from different years to establish a cause and effect relationship proving the conclusion…gun population in this year with deaths in another, IIRC. John Lott blew it out of the park…basic method failure. That is a measure of how desparate the doctor was to keep the grant money coming, IMO.

So, no, Obama is going to take the guns if he can. It is like saying he heard nothing radical from Wright in 20 years, well, nothing he objects to.

The sop to hunters is really dumb. In the background of the law and philosophy that led to 2A, and in the writings of the Founders, there is the barest connection to hunting, a mere observation that people need to hunt for meat and arms have a role in hunting, therefore in daily survival.

The overwhelming focus and intention was to take the means of effective self-defense by individuals against oppression, from petty criminals or government run amok, away from the discretion or whim of government. The difference they saw between the types of tyranny is the scale of response by the people. Only.

For Obama or Clinton to miss this simply comes of ignoring an inconvenient truth, if in fact they really have read up on both sides of the issue.

My grasp of the obvious is quite firm…

Obama’s campaign seems to come down to “Don’t believe what I do; Believe what I say.” Since he hasn’t done very much in his political career, those who want to can suspend disbelief in his words without too much strain on their conscience. I happen to think choosing the leader of the free world requires a bit more analysis than that used to buy a nifty kitchen gadget from a fast-talking salesman on the Home Shopping Network.

Barack Hussein bin-Obama may or may not succeed in stripping law abiding American citizens of their Constitutionally guaranteed right to bear arms, but if he does, it will be under the guise of “safety” and “anti-violence”. It’s the old bait n’ switch.

The fact is, they (the liberal politicians) want to strip law abiding decent American citizens of their rights and their guns so Americans won’t be able to rise up and revolt againt them and be armed while doing so once they strip us of nearly all our Constitutional rights that they deem dangerous, or that they deem might enable thought crimes to be perpatrated, like freedom of speech and press and so on.

France has long ago already outlawed private ownership of guns, and at this very moment they are prosecuting a high profile celebrity citizen, Brigitte Bardot, for “inciting racial hatred” because of a letter Bardot wrote to French officials in 2004 in which she alluded to Muslims as “this population that leads us around by the nose, [and] which destroys our country.” As an animal rights activist, she had written that letter (FOUR YEARS AGO) to one solitary person within the French government in protest of the ritual slaughter of sheep during the Muslim festival of Eid-al-Kabir. One may or may not agree with her stance, but you’d think she’d have the right to speak her mind and express her thoughts as long as she’s not inciting riots. Heck no. Not in Europe buddy. Plus, she’s been prosecuted for thought crimes four previous times… and she’s not alone. The French have prosecuted many people speaking their minds outside the boundry of political correctness, as has Britain, Spain, the Netherlands, etc ad nauseum.

People in the United States better start using their friggin’ heads and start using some foresight, or we’ll end up just like the stinking EU and have our gun rights and definitely our freedom of speech and press (and God only knows what other rights) ripped from our very souls by our despicable liberal government well within our own lifetimes.

SilverStar830 on April 19, 2008 at 9:28 PM

what do they teach all those city slickers? must be something in the water within the cities to drug people into stupidity.

unseen on April 19, 2008 at 8:43 PM

My theory is that city life is dehumanizing. So many towers of glass, concrete and steel in the cities themselves and row houses packed together in the suburbs, governed by neighborhood associations, all of it ruled over by ever expanding local governments. Most universities are in or near metropolitan areas and these, as are large corporations and the courts in which they’re sued, are significant sources of politically correct thought.

When people remove themselves so far from nature they unlearn self-reliance and instead rely on government as a crutch. This, in turn, leads to other unnatural pathologies such as homelessness, panhandling and gangs, to name a few. People delude themselves into thinking that government can protect them in every aspect of their daily lives, so when they look around at others, who’ve been most impacted by the pathologies born of the city and have turned to crime, instead of taking personal responsibility for their own safety they turn to still more government to make them safe.

It becomes a cycle:
1) Cities, largely the dependence on liberal government, breeds crime
2) People want something done typically leading to an increase in the size of the government
3) More crime results
4) Return to 1 and repeat

Many of the pathologies born in the cities are then gradually spread outward through our public school system, technology and the migration of city dwellers, sick of the crime and the hectic lifestyle, into the country where they hope to be closer to the natural order of life. Unfortunately, they usually bring some of their pathologies with them, and while they may be happier in the country, the people who were already there pay an inevitable price. One notable example is that small conservative communities become larger liberal communities, providing fertile grounds for the pathologies to begin anew.

FloatingRock on April 19, 2008 at 9:36 PM

When your legislative career is a tabula rasa filled with ‘present’ votes, and you are a Presidential frontrunner, your associations, writings and words become an issue. If a candidate is going to LIE to you about what ONE article of the Bill of Rights is about, then they will LIE to you about the rest.

Why trust someone with the First Amendment when they lie about the 2nd?

I can (almost) respect someone who wants to repeal the 2nd, but lying about it earns you my contempt.

There are ZERO contemporary sources that place such limits on the 2nd, numerous that expound upon its wider application.

If you make statements like Obama’s, you’re either lying about the Amendment or your qualifications to speak publicly about it.

Speakup on April 19, 2008 at 10:47 PM

Leftists have to outlaw firearms before they can ever hope to achieve their ultimate objective. Otherwise at some point the very people they pretend to represent will undo any “progress” that’s been made.

I’m not sure if it’s a new tactic or not, but leftists seem to be trying particularly hard to split hunters away from the greater community of 2nd amendment supporters. I hope and suspect that hunters are smart enough to realize that together we stand and divided we fall. The very fact that leftists are employing this tactic should reveal to all 2nd amendment supporters the devious nature of the enemy.

Politico is doing a bang up job of delving into Obama’s past.

I loved the way Barry the constitutional law professor said in the ABC debate that he didn’t “hear” the briefs on the 2nd Amendment case. No doubt that is true, since briefs are read and not heard. A lawyerly dodge?

Buy Danish on April 19, 2008 at 11:15 PM

No doubt, but I don’t think his dodge was as nuanced as that. He doesn’t have to read anything but the Constitution to realize that the DC gun ban is clearly unconstitutional. His nuance was just a means for him to decline an answer without it being obvious to the average American voter. He surely has an opinion and it’s that the DC gun ban doesn’t go far enough. He just doesn’t want to say that because his campaign would be over.

I hope and suspect that hunters are smart enough to realize that together we stand and divided we fall. The very fact that leftists are employing this tactic should reveal to all 2nd amendment supporters the devious nature of the enemy.

I believe gun owners pretty well handled any potential split following that ill advised comment made by the author of hunting articles in one of the outdoor magazines. He did a mini-rant on why “assault rifles” shouldn’t be used by hunting purists, and his little world fell in on top of him. Seems no one agreed with him and he ended up making apologies to the whole gun world. I don’t know if he even got his job back.

I don’t recall the word hunters being in the 2nd Amendment.

Did this happen online somewhere so that there might be a link or was it a write-in campaign to a traditional magazine?

Did you know that Lex Luthor wears Obama under-roos?

FloatingRock on April 20, 2008 at 1:28 AM

OK, there was basically a snowball’s chance in hell of me ever voting for him in the first place, but I will NEVER, EVER vote for someone with an active anti-gun past history (or present; obviously)

I’m not Limerick but I’d advise against the Yak urine—it’s nearly as bad as the Absolut.

It was writer Jim Zumbo in Outdoor Life. Just type “Jim Zumbo assault weapons” into google and you’ll find lots of links.

This was said elsewhere but bears repeating. If you think electing Obama means your guns will be taken away, you are an idiot.

How many other boards did Obama sit on?
The Woods foundation is a liberal foundation as well.

I’m John McCain and I’d like to personally apologize for this blog and this post! Barack Obama is a close personal friend of mine who I have crossed the isle to work with on behalf of the American people on many occasion to pass meaningful legislation. Personal attacks against fine Americans like Senator Obama have no place in this campaign and I will not stand for them! I was in Vietnam and was a POW, by the way!
