Video: New gold standard set in Obama’s shameless distortion of McCain’s comments; Update: It’s true that economy expanded, admits Obama

Via Conservative Punk. For a change, this one has nothing to do with spending 100 years in Iraq. Team Maverick is irate, for good reason as you’ll see, but what I think we’re watching here is a strategy starting to take shape: Obama’s willing to lie, even this shamelessly, in order to focus media attention on McCain’s weak spots even if he has to absorb some blowback for dishonesty in the process. Lying about what McCain meant vis-a-vis those hundred years of occupation still accomplishes the task of putting Maverick on the defensive and pushing the subject back in front of a suspicious public. So too here, quoting a line out of context to make McCain sound pollyanna-ish about the economy, knowing that it would be challenged and debunked but also knowing that it forces McCain to go out there and reiterate that the Bush economy is in bad shape. Ah well. Two can, and will, play at this game. Coming soon: Maverick accuses Obama of having written some of Wright’s sermons. “No I didn’t! I merely spent 20 years listening to them!”

Update: He’s as pollyanna-ish as McCain is.

His suit isn’t completely empty; it’s overflowing with bs.

I think I saw it here yesterday… “Hillary lies… but Obama *is* a lie.” That man brings politics to a new level of dispicable.

hindmost on April 18, 2008 at 3:46 PM

Yes, Barry. You are so above and beyond politics as usual. You nailed it a few weeks back, AP… he’s the same (or at this point, I dare say worse) than the rest but he did a slicker job at hiding it.

Wineaholic on April 18, 2008 at 3:47 PM

+ faith/guns/racistgate, + Wright, + Ayers, + Rezko, …

not a good narrative on BarryO right now.

funky chicken on April 18, 2008 at 3:48 PM

Obama is playing to his base.
McCain comes across as knowing what he is talking about.
Obama just blatantly lies.

None of those losers listening to Obama will vote for McCain anyway.

Of course, in a debate, Obama better watch his azz because Americans will tolerate a lot, but lying about McCain is not one of them imo.

Dems and Indies particularly find McCain likable and a hero.
Obama is melting down……..

ArmyAunt on April 18, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Whatever. I really hate those Cylons.
This weeks episode streaming NOW on SciFi.com?!

What do you do when your enemy is crazy, and suicidal? The AQ-Ts have been too quiet.

Perhaps Obama is right about one thing. Somebody is distracting somebody.

Agrippa2k on April 18, 2008 at 3:50 PM

I must say, I have truly enjoyed the total meltdown on Kos after the debate was aired!!

ArmyAunt on April 18, 2008 at 3:51 PM

Hm. So does McCain think we are better off because of Bush’s economic policies or not?

Spirit of 1776 on April 18, 2008 at 3:53 PM

I think this race will be over by June 3. The only thing is the person who is going to win, won’t be the current delegate leader. Then you will hear the outcry of the left.

Who will they have to thank? The media, who has proped up this empty suit for months and now…The chickens…are coming home….to roost!!

PappaMac on April 18, 2008 at 3:54 PM

you know what’s scary, who are the people cheering him on?

I hope the majority of people see through this bullsh!t

Obama is lying about McCain to win over the Super Delegates.

Desperation. Lying to get votes. Isn’t that what liberals do so well? I hope people are smart enough to see through this sham.

jencab on April 18, 2008 at 3:59 PM

The scary this is NOW he knows for sure he can get away with it. When it comes to Republicans the irrational hatred is hard to fathom.

During his “campaign” he has often mentioned Republicans in a way that seems to have “bamboozled” some RINOs. Even praising Reagan? Clinton knee-jerked on that one.

Clinton’s real talking point is that you always knew she would dis Republicans harshly. Obama, to get the upper hand, will now wade into the vile rhetoric that his base are addicted to.

Agrippa2k on April 18, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Lying to his followers, and they worship Messiah’s every word.

Disgusting.

wise_man on April 18, 2008 at 4:00 PM

This is not surprising, liberals live in a world on unreality.

Almost every single one I have ever met had some flaw in that area, some great, some small…

F Barry, that sanctimonious prick.

benrand on April 18, 2008 at 4:00 PM

This election just keeps getting better and better. The Dems implode, and Maverick (who will ultimately win because of the disaffected Dem vote) finally has to take some heat after decades of media adulation. Good stuff.

Good Stein, AP, you’re turning me into a cynic. Obama does no wrong, even when he goes to such lengths to twist a comment out of context. If Wright and his condescension to Middle America cna’t crack his poll numbers, I have no clue what will.

(resigns himself to 4-8 years of Obama by investing heavily in Nuclear futures in Iran’s market)

VolMagic on April 18, 2008 at 4:14 PM

I’m going to go on record right now: In November, McCain will win sufficiently that it could arguably be called a landslide (but not indisputably so).

DaveS on April 18, 2008 at 4:16 PM

Gawd. What’s beyond “shameless”? We need a new word. I nominate “Obama.”

Splashman on April 18, 2008 at 4:19 PM

OT, but HotAir would get a chuckle. I saw a guy with two buttons on his backpack. He was serious about both of them: “Obama ‘08″ and “I heart Robots”.

He was in the Robotics program at the University.

I’m with Dave here. Barry’s great poll numbers are in matchups with Hillary. And the fact is she’s done for. She jumped the shark at Tuzla and there’s just no going back.

But Barry’s not looking so good against McCain, and I’m getting a sense Maverick’s going to be a much better candidate than I expected. I’m getting a feeling that more than what AP says here, the Dems are just used to punching at Bush and him taking it.

Typhoon on April 18, 2008 at 4:25 PM

Is it slimely and underhanded… yeah. But I have a hard time feeling for McCain on this point after the way he shamelessly mischaracterized Romney’s comments on Iraq. He’s willing to do it himself. All I hope is that he gives as good as he gets and doesn’t pull his punches against Obama.

Spolitics on April 18, 2008 at 4:26 PM

I am already there.

When the debates between him and McCain start, I will be enjoying some extra popcorn.

I can’t wait until McCain starts every sentence with:
“The good senator is simply WRONG on this and here is why…”

Nothing like being schooled by a pro lol.

I’m going to go on the record right now too: In November, McCain will win by a wide margin but the Dems will still shriek that they’ve been robbed AGAIN by Diebold/Rove/Halliburton/whomever.

I hope this election buries every ambition, dream and goal that Barry Obama has in a steaming pile of ashes. What’s sad is that our neighbors and friends are throwing open the gates to this Socialist ninny. Can I vote for Jack Ryan instead? (Not the Ben Afflek version…the Harrison Ford version)

wise_man on April 18, 2008 at 4:35 PM

Lyndon Johnson once asked an aide to spread a rumor that his opponent had committed unnatural acts with farm animals (although with more specific language). “But sir,” the aide said, “You know that’s not true.” Johnson replied, “I know, but let’s make the [SOB] deny it.”

I’m beginning to think Obama admires much more about Johnson than just the Great Society programs.

Yeah, I have no sympathy for McCain whatsoever as he proved himself no better. Ironically as per Luntz’s group of the other day, those who aren’t familar with McCain see a man of character.

In so much as it matters, the voters should know the truth, not for McCain’s sake, but for the voters’ sake.

Are you sure about that?

Team Maverick is irate because McCain is still undecided whether to concede the presidency to Hussein now or to wait until November.

Jimnospin on April 18, 2008 at 5:11 PM

Obama knows that he has a cult following. He knows that there are people who will believe anything that he says, and if his words are proven to be untrue, will convince themselves (and try to convince others) that “what he really meant was…” He’s counting on it.

Spirit of 1776 on April 18, 2008 at 3:53 PM

I have the same question. It seems McCain is playing it both ways, but overall, he seems to say the economy is doing great. Plus, he doesn’t answer the question that was asked (at least not in this clip).

Entelechy on April 18, 2008 at 8:07 PM

All that aside, there is still a bit of a fly in McCain’s economic ointment.

How will McCain handle the question that Ronald Reagan asked when debating Jimmy Carter, “Are You Better Off”?

The price of gasoline in 2001 was $1.39 per gallon. Now, it’s $4. The number of Americans lacking health insurance was 38 million; now, it’s 47 million. The national debt was $5.7 trillion in 2001; now, it’s $9.2 trillion. The dollar was worth 1.07 euro; now, it’s .68.

And so on: The poverty rate, college costs, take-home pay, personal indebtedness, foreign oil dependency and the trade deficit all are worse than they were when Bush took office.

In the GW debate, Emanuel and fellow Democrats Steve Israel (N.Y.), Artur Davis (Ala.) and Robert Andrews (N.J.) pummeled Republicans Putnam, Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.), Paul Ryan (Wis.) and Eric Cantor (Va.) with the numbers, and the Republicans had no refutation to make.

Democrats will do the same to McCain, and he’d better get ready with answers. Although polls now show him running virtually even with both of his Democratic rivals, Democrats think that the 2008 update on Ronald Reagan’s famous question from 1980 - when he trounced Jimmy Carter - eventually will prove devastating to McCain, too.

“Are you better off” is not really a fair question.
The economy is suffering because of inflated oil prices & deflated home prices.
Is either Bush’s fault?
Oil is, in part, the Dems’ fault, because they won’t allow getting more oil from Alaska.
