Video: Hey, who’s up for another 200-comment thread on tasing?

My least favorite subject to write about, but forced upon me this morning by a nasty case of spring fever and the fact that the lead news story in America is the Pope saying Mass. Here you go, then: The driver is drunk, agitated, and resisting arrest with physical force, but he’s also walking away from the cop when he’s zapped, which is an unorthodox posture for the use of a weapon that’s designed for self-defense during an attack. Question for the cops/friends of cops among the readership: What’s the normal protocol for dealing with an angry suspect who’s larger than you and not quite ready to be arrested yet? Call for back-up and make sure he doesn’t go anywhere until it arrives? Or make him ride the lightning and get this show on the road? Whatever happened to good ol’ mace, anyway?

Bro tased…
What part of “don’t resist” do people not understand?
Verbal Abuse on April 17, 2008 at 12:29 PM
So what is your most favorite topic to write?
Just curious.
ttevolla on April 17, 2008 at 12:29 PM
I’ve seen cops use it on fleeing suspects who won’t stop, too. It’s preferential to getting shot, I’d think.
***
As for the cop’s behavior? He’s just bitter.
amerpundit on April 17, 2008 at 12:29 PM
The officer had every right to tase him. You don’t pull away like that when he goes to cuff you.
What’s more ironic…a Steeler’s RB getting stopped for going too fast…
JetBoy on April 17, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Hey, Allah, do you still have the old video so we can compare and contrast?
peacenprosperity on April 17, 2008 at 12:30 PM
he struck the cop. end of story for me.
lorien1973 on April 17, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Hmmm… in this case, I think it might have been justified.
How would he make sure the suspect doesn’t go anywhere. The football player could have easily overcome the officer. So, I think this was as much for the officers protection as much as anything.
Nineball on April 17, 2008 at 12:30 PM
These sports figures (or at least, a lot of them) are really spoiled.

Walking back to the car, a car with other people in it and Lord knows what else.
Tase him for sure , I’m with the cop on this.

moxie_neanderthal on April 17, 2008 at 12:39 PM
That seemed appropriate since he was violent.
ronsfi on April 17, 2008 at 12:39 PM
He thinks he is above the law by pulling his hands away and walking off when the cop is trying to arrest him.
He had his chances to cooperate and would have been free to go in a few minutes if he had not done anything wrong.
Stupid Jock Man made a serious of bad decisions that created the environment that led to his tazing.
EJDolbow on April 17, 2008 at 12:39 PM
HA HA!! I love it!
Exit question: Do you think he’d be laying on the pavement, twitching and pissing himself, if he had just done exactly what the nice officer told him?
I’m thinkin’ “no.”
CurtZHP on April 17, 2008 at 12:39 PM
I have to agree. I would rather the cop stayed calm and gave him a long chain while waiting for backup, but there are probably a thousand reasons not to, and examples of why the long chain gets cops hurt or sued.
Bottom line: you can’t hit cops.
Jaibones on April 17, 2008 at 12:40 PM
During the time of the old west, the sheriff would pull his pistol and march you to jail, or bury you if you didn’t comply. Then we as citizens decided that was too cruel, and we gave the cops a big stick to throw a beating on the guy, and bet him down until either he complied, or he was knocked out. Then we said, wait, beating someone with a club is too cruel. We did it slowly, because of good intentions. First, we couldn’t smash the guy in the noggin, that was too brutal.
Now we tell cops to use mace, which is at best marginally effective, often worthless when dealing with a bad guy who’s on drugs or booze. Have they gone too far zapping the guy with electricity? I think we went too far a long time before this. So allow me to join in the calls for the cop to use non violent verbal judo to try and convince the guy he really did want to allow the cop to drive him home and stop on the way to get a drink.
Snake307 on April 17, 2008 at 12:40 PM
I’ll add my two cents and do my part to get you to that 200+ comments goal.
This one doesn’t look quite as cut and dry as the others did. I can see why the officer got agitated after the guy pushed him away. Plus, I guess he figured he wouldn’t be doing his job if he just let the guy walk away. He still seems maybe a little bit quick with that taser, but I’ll give the officer the benefit of the doubt here.
Yoosaion on April 17, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Failure to comply with a lawful order can be grounds to use a tazer to acheive complience.
In other words, the dude brought it on himself.
Better a tazer then going back to the bad old days of the baton.
opusrex on April 17, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Agreement here. Cop was justified.
I’m guessing ROBOTS.
KelliD on April 17, 2008 at 12:45 PM
LOL
I vote for get this show on the road, the more painful the better.
Theworldisnotenough on April 17, 2008 at 12:47 PM
As is the case in most of these situations, both acted out of line. He should have just taken the ticket. The cop… well… had other options than to taze the guy.
AbaddonsReign on April 17, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Dead on, or rather, turn on the juice, this player’s cooked.
Other adventures in tazing didn’t have anyone threatening a cop or taking a swipe at a cop. So down he goes in the wrong end zone.
Kudos to the cop.

Yeah, no need to engage the pope’s arguments about natrual law, secualarism and the deline of the West Allah. It’s religion! It must all be crap! I have no choice but you post a tazing!
MarkJudge on April 17, 2008 at 12:56 PM
It’s just shocking…
saltydogg14 on April 17, 2008 at 12:56 PM
The perp turns away from the cop saying, “No, you’re not gonna spray me with that.” I wonder what it feels like to expect pepper spray, protect yourself from receiving said spray, and then getting tased?
medguy on April 17, 2008 at 1:03 PM
I bet he was just shocked.
I had to.
Geronimo on April 17, 2008 at 1:05 PM
Lesson for all: obey a cop, even if he is a jerk - your response comes at a courthouse, not at the scene. Lesson two (multiple choice): When a suspect is not complying with an officer, do you prefer - A. Gunshot B. Nightstick to the head or C. Taser?
Think_b4_speaking on April 17, 2008 at 1:05 PM
He’s walking away, but the officer needs to stop him because he could be going back to his car to get a weapon. Perfectly appropriate use of a TASER.

madame_bluetooth on April 17, 2008 at 1:18 PM
Running away? Just backing away? You resist, you be stupid.
The cop had a choice. A flying tackle and a chance of getting hurt, or worse, not ever seeing his kids again, or let the fella ‘ride the lightning’.

Here’s my contribution to the 200.

Some people just have to learn the hard way, you are NOT above the Law.
Tony737 on April 17, 2008 at 1:28 PM
Well, since tasing makes the cop’s job easier, and the cop’s safety is paramount, even more important than the safety of the citizen he is sworn to protect, and since vee muzt obey all zee lawful orders ya, I say let cops tase you as soon as you roll down your window.
Presto! No more risk to the cops! Instant compliance, no muss, no fuss! Just, *ZAP* “…license and registration please.”
No more worrying about whether or not the cop goes home to his family, he just writes you a ticket while you sit there in a daze, and then sends you on your way.
Perfect.

fossten on April 17, 2008 at 1:29 PM
Which should be right up your alley, Catholic school boy.
I can never see your videos. If the suspect was backing away, what would stop him from entering the car and driving off? If that is the case, he should be tazed.
Blake on April 17, 2008 at 1:30 PM
Good idea, let him walk back to the car and get a baseball bat…he already showed a propensity to strike or resist arrest.
And any smart cop (person) knows not to have a confrontation with a 250 lb. well built angry man, wait till he turns his back and take him down.
And here is a little advice, if you are caught driving a car without any ID, co-operate, they have no idea who you are…

Yes we subjects need to be incapacitated for our own good. Let’s just make tasing mandatory for all traffic stops. Zero tolerance!

He already assaulted the officer once so what did you want, for him to turn around and belt him in the face before he got tasered? Sorry but I 100% agree with the officer tasering him and think he did the right thing.

I’m just sick of adults who think they should behave like spoiled children. Hell, I’m even sick of spoiled children behaving like spoiled children. I say tase away, Mr. Policeman!
Having said that I would like to point out that I wouldn’t approve of caning (like in Singapore) or the use of prison rape as a punishment. The effects of tasing are usually not long unless the person has some prior condition. This is like the debate over “torture” in terrorist interrogations. A reasonable judgment can be made that waterboarding is A-OK, but that using a drill on a terrorist’s knees and eyeballs is beyond the pale. Or banning abortion after the first trimester. Or drawing a line somewhere between right nifty and heinously evil on any topic. We have brains. We are allowed to use them when we make laws and discuss moral issues.
thuja on April 17, 2008 at 1:49 PM
You’ll need to say it once more in order to reach an Obamaist level of ‘clarification.’
And…it’s still unconvincing.

Troll
1c. Noun
A member of an internet forum who continually harangues and harasses others. Someone with nothing worthwhile to add to a certain conversation, but rather continually threadjacks or changes the subject, as well as thinks every member of the forum is talking about them and only them. Trolls often go by multiple names to circumvent getting banned.

You take a beating froma bat. Not a small hit, but a fricking home run beating. Or better, take a bullet. Nothing leathal here mind you. THEN take a hit from a Tazer and tell me which one would you rather suffer from.
As a retired soldier and as a current researve deputy, I have suffed all of these. I would rather get Tazered. At least you can get up and walk away in minutes as opposed to a long hospital stay.
opusrex on April 17, 2008 at 1:59 PM
100% justified.
Even if he hadn’t struck the officer. He was not following the officer’s verbal commands - that is a form of resisting arrest. Who is to say he wasn’t returning to his truck to get his gun? And if you were the officer in this situation would you be willing to bet your life on it?
joncoltonis on April 17, 2008 at 2:00 PM
Tasing justified. Next!

Limerick on April 17, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Cop did the right thing. He had his chance to peacefully resolve it, but became physically confrontational. No question here.
IrishEyes on April 17, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Good point. Here is my second contribution. We are up to 74?
ColtsFan on April 17, 2008 at 2:12 PM
fossten- Just like a (dare I say liberal)to call someone the name that fits you best. Project much. But you are right in one respect…Free Will. I believe in it. The perp decided that he did not have to listen to a lawful order..free will. The police officer decided to taze said perp. Once again..free will. Now both can be responsible for their actions. I say good luck and good tazing.
Suburbandad on April 17, 2008 at 2:12 PM
Was said above but bears repeating:
The officer was well within his rights to use the taser to drop the suspect who could have very easily been returning to the vehicle to retrieve a weapon. The suspect was resisting arrest, and taking actions easy to interpret as an escalation.
Bob Owens on April 17, 2008 at 2:17 PM
Since you’re calling me out by name, I will correct your misconception. You couldn’t be more wrong. I’m probably more conservative than you, if I can join the (dare I presume) game.
Furthermore, I’m on your side here. If you scroll up you can see that I’m advocating tazing everybody at all traffic stops, no discrimination, because the job of the cop must be as easy as possible. So don’t flame me for agreeing with you here.
fossten on April 17, 2008 at 2:21 PM
He should have tased Worley before he got out of the car. That way there would have been no confrontation, no risk to the cop.

Thanks for the honest answer.

The passengers start mouthing off. Bad sign. The guy gets out of the car and thinks he’s giving the orders. He shoves the cop. Game over. Taze away.
What is it with these road brats anyway? It’s dark and it takes a lot less time than this video for one of those jerks to shoot the cop. The taser never seems powerful enough. Hope they use lithium batteries.

My my, what anger. Maybe you should have that checked.
You might want to choose your terms better. Sarcastic might be more appropriate. Clearly I am being acute and sharp, as I’ve generated quite a few responses.
Try reading the definition in the dictionary before you post. Sounding like Mike Tyson is not a positive attribute.
fossten on April 17, 2008 at 2:48 PM
Well, you’re right…you sure did get plenty of responses.
James on April 17, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Blake on April 17, 2008 at 2:48 PM
Have you actually made an argument yet? Seems that all you know how to do is flame, and that not very well. Pot, meet kettle.
fossten on April 17, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Thank you for the suggestion but I but I googled the word before I posted. I felt no need to cut and pasted since I mistakenly thought you knew what it meant. So that you will not have to look it up, I was using the lack of intelligence definition.
If you were using sarcasm, you failed miserably and may want to consider retiring that aspect of your personality. You are not good at it.
Suburbandad on April 17, 2008 at 2:55 PM
If I’m not good at it, then everybody would have taken my suggestion seriously, instead of interpreting it as sarcastic.
You really don’t know how to talk to people, do you?
fossten on April 17, 2008 at 2:57 PM
Beautiful. So you had to look up a word before you used it, just to make sure it said what you wanted to say.
Mike Tyson, glad to meet you.
And you say I’m not intelligent?
