Misplaced outrage over debate continues on Left

Predictably, the progressive blogosphere has erupted in outrage at ABC, Charles Gibson, and George Stephanopolous for their performance in last night’s Democratic presidential debate. Michelle and Joe Gandelman have great roundups for a comprehensive look at the reaction, but the criticism falls heavily on the first 50 minutes of the debate. Bloggers vent their spleen at the focus on campaign gaffes, stumbles, personal and political associations, and they have declared ABC a tool of Karl Rove or the resurrection of Lee Atwater as a result.
I’m not sure what anyone expected. All of the questions asked were legitimate questions, and the time spent on them had more to do with followups by the candidates than with the moderators. None of them had been asked in a debate before last night, and indeed most of these issues had only been reported since the last debate. ABC didn’t break a scoop last night; all of the issues they raised in that first 50 minutes have appeared in both major media outlets and in each others’ advertising.
Part of the problem is that the Democrats have had over a dozen of these nationally-televised debates, and the policy differences have mostly disappeared between the two candidates. Obama and Hillary have both adopted John Edwards’ populism for the last three months and their platforms have become nearly identical. Their entire race has come down to competence, personal narratives, and identity politics. Did they expect ABC to ignore that, and to offer bland policy questions at the expense of asking about the controversies that have erupted in the last two months based on the kind of race into which this has developed?
And what were those topics? The Tuzla Dash revealed a deep dishonesty from Hillary Clinton, a willingness to lie about her personal history on at least four occasions — and doing so on the campaign trail. Barack Obama started Crackerquiddick by delighting a collection of San Francisco elite to denigrate religious faith, gun ownership, and (oddly) protectionism as an irrational response to bitterness over government’s failure to guarantee personal success. Jeremiah Wright’s rabid demagoguery for years supposedly escaped Obama’s notice, but he also acted to keep Wright off the dais at one campaign event because of his combustible speech — and Wright was on Obama’s campaign team. Obama worked with former domestic terrorist William Ayers in building his political base before and after 9/11.
When all one has is personal narrative, expecting the nation’s support on the basis of a personal story arc rather than any relative experience at governing — a description that fits both candidates — they shouldn’t act shocked when that narrative comes into question.
But even when issues got discussed, neither of them performed well at all. Obama exposed himself as completely clueless on capital gains taxes, and showed that he wants government to act to redistribute wealth not because it’s efficient but because he wants life to be “fair”. He didn’t comprehend Gibson’s repeated reminders that revenues increased when those taxes dropped, and that meant more wealth to redistribute. Hillary and Obama both somehow concluded that the Constitution’s 2nd amendment applies to individuals, but that local communities can override the Constitution, which left both Gibson and Stephanopolous gobsmacked. The last 50 minutes was almost as bad for both as the first 50 minutes, only more dull.
The progressive outrage is misplaced. They should be angry that they only have these two flawed candidates left as choices. ABC asked appropriate questions. Progressives just didn’t want to hear them.

They’re not flawed in any way, from the Liberal-Socialists point of view. What’s flawed is a media which exposed their socialist views and affiliations to a country which is almost, but not quite ready, to swallow it. In a few short years, American socialism will be proudly out of the closet, or buried. But never again will the Dems run liberal socialists and hope that no one notices.

Missplaced my ass. You know you’d be angry about the lack of focus on issues if this were a general election debate between either one of them and McCain. For all the talk about “Vetting” Obama by conservative bloggers, I notice an interesting lack of interest in asking him about opinions of policy. The fact that the right thinks “Do you believe in the American flag?” is a legitimate question for a national debate speaks volumes.

Morning, all.
Here’s a quote from some lib on one of the boards:
I say we do the opposite and let Charlie and George know what a good job they did.
BacaDog on April 17, 2008 at 7:38 AM
According to one of his statements, the Obameister considers all these issues “distractions” from what he regards as his “mission”- to deliver health care, jobs, etc., etc.
Sorry, Senator. What I want to know, as a voter, is this;
When you take the Oath of Office, that includes the words, “Preserve, Protect, and Defend the Constitution of the United States”, are you going to be telling the truth, or not?
My guess would be, “not”.
Which means my vote will be going to McCain, to do my personal best to ensure that he’s the one taking that oath, and not you.
/Ditto for the Hildebeast, if she gets the nomination
cheers

Charlie Gibson better hire a bodyguard. And Stephanopolous should avoid sleeping in the same location for the next few decades. I love it.

Dems can’t take the heat. And it’s not like ABC played favorites, either. Both candidates got the “third degree”. Why is it that the Left moans and groans constantly if tough questions are asked of their candidates?

It’s really fascinating that, to the contrary, progressives believe that Hussein/Hillary are the best candidates the Democrat party ever produced because “they are from our own”.

Obama is toast and Hillary will be getting the Big Nod. She exhibited the Clintonistra bait and switch perfectly last night and revealed that Obama cannot stand pressure under fire.
Snooper on April 17, 2008 at 7:57 AM
The nature of the questions are determined by the nature of the candidates. Hillary Clinton gets questioned about being an unscrupulous liar. Obama gets questioned about being a racist/terrorist/jihadi loving empty suit. McCain may get questioned about being too old, too mean, too liberal, old-guard, inside Washington pol, etc.
As for policy, I think McCain is the least well-known. I think people know exactly what to expect, policy-wise, if Clinton or Obama become Pres. I have far more questions about what to expect with McCain. The debates he was in didn’t adequately do the job of exposing that, because he was rarely the center of attention.
JiangxiDad on April 17, 2008 at 7:58 AM
Typhonsentra,
In the general election, there’d be reason to be annoyed at a twenty-minute focus on character issues – although we will see it anyway, don’t think we won’t.
But as Ed pointed out, we *already* know Obama and Hillary’s talking points, and their stances are virtually identical. More talk of global warming, health care, and international politics won’t really tell us anything new about them. But their recent attack ads provide plenty of character issues that *do* distinguish them. That’s fair game, and how they deal with those issues tells us a lot about them as people.
Besides, they were asked on other major issues – the economy, Iraq, etc. They, especially Obama, just blew those questions handily because they were challenged for once instead of allowed to repeat their talking points ad nauseum.
E1701 on April 17, 2008 at 8:01 AM
What is the chance that a network news organization has finally looked at the success of Fox News channel, and decided to break the mold of Liberal talking heads? They can leave that to the remaining networks and pull in an audience that is wiser and more in touch.
In avoiding going on Fox for possibly a real debate, the Dems are out of shape. Neither Clinton or Obama are ready for a national debate.
Hening on April 17, 2008 at 8:06 AM
I wouldn’t expect a repeat performance of the msm asking the tough questions of these two. Expect them to dial it down quite a bit now that the pwogressives have let out their big collective whine.

I still think the media misses many opportunities to stop the crazy spinning these two do. For example: Obama always gets a pass on his associations by saying, “I am not responsible for what (fill in the name of shady associate) did.” No one is saying you are Barack. What we want to know is WHY these are the type of people you spend your time with.
The fact that you are friends with Tom Coburn is a plus by the way, not a minus.

Both of these candidates have loot left in their primary campaign accounts. Informing the public is secondary to the Main Stream Medias primary mission of extracting the loot. Tonight these two debate moderators did their job. Both candidates will have to open their purses wide to undo the off-image message presented in this debate.

You’re nuts! Only a liberal would write something like that. A conservative would state that they are a conservative, and from that perspective found the debate one-sided or wrong in some way. But you libs write from the perspective of someone who is supposedly neutral (the old MSM trick). You’re not neutral, you’re a Democrat, probably a closet socialist.
We understand you perfectly. You’re an Obama supporter and your guy got his nuts crushed. You could have explained in your letter why you’re an Obama supporter and why your guy is best. But then you’d have to actually defend your hidden secret agenda, and would no longer be able to hide behind the skirts or neutrality.
You make me sick. You’re a coward who doesn’t even defend his convictions. Btw, you’re in the perfect line of work. Stay there. We know the school system is lib. That’s why we undo all the crap you teach our kids everyday when they come home.

Like many, my jaw rested on my chest for the first quarter of the debate in sheer astonishment as Charlie and George asked the sorts of questions we’ve been waiting to be asked.
I thought Clinton actually came off better than the great communicator. Clinton found Obama’s spleen and that is a good thing.
I think they’ve harmed each other and this will transfer into the general election.

… continue the year-long brainwashing I have been conducting on the children of unsuspecting taxpayers in my district. I had only assumed that ABC would continue the 40 year-long tradition of slathering butter on liberal Democrats and licking it off, and calling that a political debate. I thought it would be fun to show a video of that to my students, in lieu of actually doing any work…but, NO! You had to go and quote the candidates’ actual political speeches, interviews, and advertisements in some sort of biased effort to make them look bad.
It’s bad TV and it’s bad Social Studies.

Jaibones on April 17, 2008 at 9:19 AM
So funny to see lefties like Daily Kos complaining about ABC’s bias in exactly the same terms Republicans know by heart:
—Stephanopolis used to work for the Clintons–how can be be objective?!
—The premise of the questions is biased–higher cap gains tax causes lower revenues? No way!
—The very nature of the questions favored [fill in blank]. Why couldn’t they ask about issues “voters” care about?
Republicans have been saying that ever since Steph started at ABC. Republicans are well used to questions premised on standard liberal talking points. Republicans know the nature of the questions will favor the Dem (See Chris Matthews’ implication that only Republicans have a litmus test on abortion).
The funniest part is how this is almost a perfect re-enactment of the left’s outrage when they discovered “Bill Clinton is a liar!” and will use the race card at the drop of a hat. We’ve known that about Bill for over a decade…they treat it as something new about him. Now they’ve discovered media bias.
What a show!

Keith “We must challenge those in office” Olbermann is outraged – outraged I say – over the questioning. In part, because the Ayers question originated from Hannity. Not, of course, whether the issue was a legitimate one. But because, horrors, it came from Hannity!

BBC World News, last night, had the debate the lead spot. They chose Barak comments at a high point, where he admonished Georgie over pointing the finger at ‘gaffs’. They chose Hillary comments at the low point, ‘I lied’.
Oh, they topped off the story with this line to help ease the fears of their viewers: ‘Experts say either candidate can beat the Republican in November’.
Thank God for ‘experts’. We couldn’t get by without them.

Shame on you, ABC. I am a Social Studies teacher and my objective today was to show clips of the debate last night to my students who are eager to learn about the issues facing America today. It was obvious that I could not do that today because of your lack of coverage of the serious issues and your relentless tabloid attacks especially on Senator Obama. Instead I shall demonstrate how the media can manipulate the American people into believing what is important for us to consider as “important issues” and not address what my students need to hear about gun control, the environment, the Iraq war, student loans, and so much more. Because they are two-faced. They can never say to the general public the things that they truly believe in. Those things can only be aired in private — like at a closed-door fundraiser in San Fran — or anonymously, like at the Daily Kos.
This is why I vastly prefer conservativism. Here we say what we mean, for all to hear, and mean what we say. We do not hide and we do not lie to protect our own.

Agree with you. I don’t believe the Left will make this mistake again. They keep losing when their candidates’ liberalism/socialism is exposed. Their next Pres. candidate will be an out-of-the-closet socialist. That will give them a great deal of political philosophy to throw around that they currently lack. My guess is that they will run an open Socialist/Communist for Governor of a reliably blue state as a trial run.

He is a living Rorschach test. Obama has next to NO record on anything. So we can only surmise who he is and how he would govern by things like his associations, what he says and does as a means of creating a composite of the man. Last night we got a glimpse of the man behind the mask. He was asked uncomfortable questions about associations and things he’s said that have been viewed as disagreeable. Likewise, Clinton was asked an uncomfortable question to which she (shocka) admitted that when politically expedient, she will lie.
But more on point, who in their right mind goes to Iowa and attempts to talk to the clingy local yokels by mentioning the cost of arugula in whole foods? I don’t even know what the hell arugula is and most of us shop at the local Kroger. Sure you can blow it off as an isolated accident, but when we hear similar talk later on it suggests a pattern. Some have suggested a sort of elitism that means he may be out of touch with main stream America.
He’s likewise demonstrated a habit of hanging out with people who say bad things about America. A self-professed mentor has said incendiary things about America and given an award to a bigot who has embraced known terrorists (Farakhan). Wright went on to give a devastating indictment of America while the Twin Towers were still smoldering and rescue workers were working around the clock to find victims. Tony Rezko is a close friend currently standing trial in Chicago for a whole slew of things which ultimately revolve around dirty politics. Obama has maintained what he has described as a cordial relationship is a former home-grown terrorist who bombed buildings and in the immediate wake of 9/11 says he wishes that he had done more (bombing).
Are you kidding me? Somehow all of this is supposed to be off the deck and we can’t ask questions about this? Holding these views or associating with these sorts of people may make him a fine choice for president of south Chicago but it does not translate to Washington D.C.
You are quite right to say that all of this has little to do with policy, but it has a great deal to do with character and judgment. It is reasonable to assume that if one’s character and judgment are sound than sound policies and decisions are likely to follow. But you want to take issues surrounding character and judgment off the table. Rather, you would have us make our vote by relying solely on mouthed policy positions that have been poll-tested and presumably place the well being of the Republic in the hands of a guy who speaks well.

Why is it that the nutroots think it’s wrong to ask the candidates about their own statements? They keep saying that Obama’s prepared remarks in San Francisco were a gaffe. Obama wasn’t talking about democrats at the fundraiser he was talking about republicans. Democrats think every republican in “flyover country” is a Bible banging, gun-toting racist doofus. The problem for Obama was that Hillary grabbed hold of it and suggested he was referring to Pennsylvania democrats. So now it’s some sort of gaffe.
And yet this “brilliant” Harvard educated lawyer just keeps digging deeper. We need to know that he thinks people only turn to religion when their Church of choice, the government, doesn’t pony up enough or redistribute enough wealth from people who actually work. He actually thinks that if government controls enough of your life there’s no need for religion. Can you say communist?

Typhonsentra,
That was the whole point of this post… these are the issues.
1) Obama attended services led by a racist anti-Semite for 20 years… why?
2) Clinton lied at least 4 times about what happened in Bosnia… why? Does character not matter?
3) Regarding Obama’s attendance at Wright’s church; does that apparent condoning of racism not matter?
4) Obama’s wife has said that this is the first time she’s been proud of her country… Does Obama feel the same way given his refusal (until lately) to wear a flag pin? Does that not matter considering he’s running for CINC of the military and leader of the country?
As Ed said in his post; there are very few policy differences between the two candidates. That leaves the issues listed above. Democratic primary voters may not want to hear the answers, but I’ll bet the rest of America does.

JimC99 on April 17, 2008 at 10:36 PM
Yeah, in the current it’s particularly your business when you get a pre-existing condition no insurer will want to deal with.
mycowardice on April 18, 2008 at 1:02 AM
There are MANY ways to improve the current system. A universal system can represent a baseline for everyone, but can also mean that if people can afford it, they can get more. In such a system, if you fall in the ‘experimental’ or other similar category, you would be able to pay for your own treatment.
So yes, one solution is to provide a LCD to everyone while allowing people to go beyond that. Another solution is to force everyone to get the exact same coverage. Another solution is to always allow people to opt-in in an affordable plan. Etc. I think the overall goal is to always ensure that if someone wants health insurance, he can get it.
mycowardice on April 18, 2008 at 1:07 AM
Ed:
This story has more legs than one would suspect on quick look as you have shown.
A leftist caller to BTR once asked me why conservatives criticize the debates given for the Republicans by the MSM. To her credit, she was truly interested in a real answer which was given to her as follows:
“Conservatives believe in the authority of the law that is the constitution. Conservatism is truly only that, nothing more; all government power is derived from the people in the constitution. That’s it. During these debates sponsored by the MSM, every question is about issues and how they will be addressed by powers NOT given to government to carry out. The debate never goes to where the so called leaders would have the authority to do what they often propose. The legality of the proposals is never addressed”.
She was quite taken by the simplicity and the clarity of the answer which she had never heard but that succinctly before.
This to me is the problem with the leftist’s objection to what was actually Steve Malzberg’s question rather than Hannity’s. I have the clip if anyone is interested. They are angry at the clarity and the simplicity of the common sense in the question.
The left could not survive without their so called pragmatism which is code for convenient thinking. The constitution is the inconvenient fact, that we on the right often fail to put out there as our most valuable and stalwart weapon in the arsenal to preserve common sense thinking and thus freedom.
