Bush to Pope: “Awesome speech”

Goofy, endearing, and cringeworthy all at once, like that time when he was caught chewing with his mouth open while telling Tony Blair that it’s time for Hezbollah to knock off the sh*t. His blood may be blue but you’re not going to hear too many complaints from him about the price of arugula at Whole Foods. Small mercies.
Not captured by the open mic here: The Pope telling him, “Thanks, yours rocked too.”

Defector01 on April 17, 2008 at 5:24 PM
Actually, that would be an appropriate word in this context. The Pope is not American and would understand awesome to be something that is “specatular or very special”.
Believe it or not, awesome was once used prior to a couple of surfers on a Pacific beach.
Saying his speech is awesome by most any western scholar in a british accent would actually sound like a smart choice of words.

Haha, that’s great. I wonder if he’s got a secret nickname for the pontiff…like, Pope Daddy, or Pope-itty Popemeister, Popey von Poperson…lol

I’m not a literature major, but understand that audience definitely indicates word choice.
Watch some of the Sunday morning TV preachers. You’ll hear God referred to as “awesome” several times. It sounds appropriate when they do it.

Natesnake, I’m pretty sure that never occured to Allah either. I have a sneaky suspicion that he doesn’t spend much time listening to the preachers on Sunday morning TV. Nor did it occur to me until you mentioned it.

I can think of quite of few Christian songs that refer to God as “awesome” as well as some Psalms.
One of my favorites is called “Awesome in this Place”. :)

I know Bush isn’t the most bestest vocabulizer in the world, but is there any chance he meant it as the word is supposed to used? As opposed to how the Ninja Turtles used it?
VolMagic on April 17, 2008 at 6:25 PM
“Hey, Berry, what’s that arugala ya speak of?”.
Indy Conservative, one more
“Father, on illegal immigration, I’m with ya all the way. You cover me on terrorism, you got my word on the new flock”.
Popes always remind me of Voltaire’s Candide, and the “pope’s daughter”, and of Pope Joan, or La Papessa.

Chakra Hammer on April 17, 2008 at 6:30 PM
while I still find this hilarious, because it seems to fit with all the other Bushisms… natesnake is 100% right, especially where I’ve applied emphasis below:
Take it a step further, there is constantly a commercial on TV, FoxNews if I’m not mistaken and probably later at night, for a Christian or Gospel CD in which you hear the familiar song “Our God Is An Awesome God”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awesome_God
I walk around with that in my head just from hearing that commercial.
Again, I still find this funny just like Bush complaining that some OBGYNs aren’t able to “practice their love with women all across this country” or “you’re workin’ hard to put food on yer family”, etc. But I’d have to lean toward this probably was less “dumb” Bush, and more Christian Bush.

I don’t know what the big deal is. There is nothing wrong with telling the Pope he had an awesome speech. The word “awesome” is not slang. I like people who are plain spoken, I don’t like liberal phony, politically correct, twisted, “for the children” plastic speech, which is all you ever hear from the left.
Maxx on April 17, 2008 at 6:51 PM
Entelechy,
Remarks by Bush to the Pope not captured by the open mic:
“Too many good priests are getting out of the Church. Too many priests aren’t able to practice their love with kids all across this country.”
Telling the reporters after his private meeting with the Pope:
“We both used Colgate toothpaste.”
“I’m the commander, I don’t need to have escort service escorting me and the Pope from the airport.”
“I don’t need to explain things to Ben, people can read the newspapers themselves and that’s the fun thing about being president.”
“Yes, I know, I know, the capital of the Vatican is Rome.”
“We have a boar for dinner, Ben, you’re not Kosher are ya?”

I have not been terribly fond of President Bush as a president, with the exception of bringing us Justices Roberts and Alito. I have always thought, however, that he would be a salt-of-the-earth friend. This just confirms that idea with me.

Didn’t Jesse Owens tell the King of Sweeden something like, “Thanks King” or something equally endearing?
This is pure, classic Bush. No matter what horrible things are said about him on the lunatic left he always has kind and encouraging words for others.
He is indeed classy. Not fake classy, real classy.

Laura has +4 of course…

OMG I am so with you on that! Couldn’t Laura or Dick or Condi have ever taken him aside and said something??
Me too. I so well remember Hillary’s cold reception of Mother Teresa’s speech when she visited … and then how awkward and out of place she looked, placing flowers on Mother Teresa’s coffin some years later. Too bad Laura and George weren’t there to do Mother justice.

It’s a shame that when anyone uses the word “awesome” it’s immediately thought of in the sense that surfer dudes mean it. “Awesome” means awe-inspiring or full or awe, which would describe a religious speech quite well. I’m not sure if this particular speech was, as I missed it, but since it came from the Pope, maybe that was the way Bush meant it.

I missed it, too.
Despite some disagreements I have with him, I do love President Bush.
And I must say, I love this Pope as well — he has really surprised me in the short time he has been the Bishop of Rome. Such strength yet such wisdom and tacit tones he takes in what he says.
I also think his meeting individually and collectively with victims of abuse earlier today was wonderful.
I’m sorry I missed the video, too.

Right on. The meeting with the abuse victims was such a good, good thing to do. The one woman who said she just came up to him and cried – it brought tears to my eyes.
For someone who has been seen as such a thinker, an introverted academic, this Pope is amazingly all about the love and healing. I love it that his very first encyclical was on the most sublime subject of all – the love of God: Deus Caritas Est.
