When Bill Clinton calls you a huckster …

Bill Clinton has a theory why Hillary Clinton attracts older voters, while Barack Obama does better with the younger set.  He told a crowd in a Pennsylvania suburb that Obama’s supporters are … inexperienced at dealing with political rhetoric.  In short — younger voters are saps for a younger, charismatic liar.  And he should know:

Older voters gravitate to Hillary Clinton because they’re too wise to be fooled by Barack Obama’s rhetoric, former president Bill Clinton told Pennsylvania voters today.

Clinton’s comments, to a packed high school gym about an hour north of Philadelphia, were one part presidential politics and one part legacy protection. His beef was with Obama’s contention that many of the problems facing the country today were simmering long before President Bush took office seven-plus years ago.

“I think there is a big reason there’s an age difference in a lot of these polls,” he said. “Because once you’ve reached a certain age, you won’t sit there and listen to somebody tell you there’s really no difference between what happened in the Bush years and the Clinton years; that there’s not much difference in how small-town Pennsylvania fared when I was president, and in this decade.”

Or maybe it’s just because they forget Obama’s in the race?

Last week, however, Clinton seemed to suggest that older voters might be more absent-minded than wise. Defending Hillary Clinton’s faulty recollection of landing under sniper fire during a 1996 humanitarian visit to Bosnia, the former president said of her critics, “When they’re 60, they’ll forget something when they’re tired at 11 o’clock at night, too.”

This looks like a case of right message, wrong messenger.  The last we heard from Bill, he singlehandedly worked to remind everyone how dishonest his wife had been with the Tuzla Dash.  The second quote came from his unsuccessful attempt to manipulate reality — and four claims to have been in terrible danger in her Bosnian USO adventure — into a single, late-night off-hand reference.  Hillary told him to shut his trap afterwards, and he did.

Maybe next time, Bill can waggle his finger at the audience.  That worked really well for him in 1997.

Still, Bill is right, and we can say that without parsing the word “is”.  Obama’s rhetoric doesn’t match reality, as we see with his ties to lobbyists and the oil companies after his loud insistence that he doesn’t take money from either.  The problem for Democrats is that the only two candidates left in the race have demonstrated a penchant for lying via ridiculous word parsing, and neither of them have Bill’s talent for getting away with it.

You know, sooner or later, most likely sooner, Shillary is going to have to give Bubba Billy a nice hot cup of SHUT THE HELL UP! Every single time this guy opens his mouth now, she drops about 6 or 8 percentage points in the polls. My question is why she is even allowing him to speak in public to begin with. It’s like he is almost intentionally trying to deep-six her campaign with his usual brand of good old fashioned arrogance.

Bill Clinton is so dishonest that if he went grocery shopping at a Safeway, he would probably say that he went to a Giant, and if he went grocery shopping at a Giant, he would probably say that he went to a Safeway.

last I heard, she was ahead in the polls in Penn…

does Billy Jeff have his own Operation: Chaos against his wife?

Straight talk from a crooked source.

Never were truer words posted.

Well, at least the part about the source…

Bill pays Obama a compliment. If Obama can pander properly to young morons, why can’t Hillary? It’s not like she has any prohibition about saying different things to different audiences. Some rap moron/Brit.Spears type could even teach her the proper accent.

Once again, Bill is criticizing his wife’s campaign. Another subtle, unconscious attack on her.

JiangxiDad on April 16, 2008 at 7:59 AM

Obama claiming that the Clinton years resembled the Bush presidency is actually a compliment to Clinton, but like everything else he says……not true.

“Voters don’t like the idea of a co-presidency, and he became so high profile that he made people begin to see this as a possible co-presidency,” Ms. Fowler said. “It’s even more problematic because she’s a woman. It looks like she either needs him to fight the big battles for her, or she can’t keep the big dog on the porch.”……Linda L. Fowler, a professor of government at Dartmouth College (1/27/08)

One has to wonder if Mr. Penn advised “porching” the big dog
once too often.

The 60 plus B.J. was just being absent-minded when he made these contradictory statements.

Cokie Roberts, on Charlie Rose last night, made a poll claim that while the voter (dem) turnout has been huge, the percentage of young voters was the same as all other election years. In the toilet in other words.

Anyone have a breakdown on that claim?

“The problem for Democrats is that the only two candidates left in the race have demonstrated a penchant for lying via ridiculous word parsing, and neither of them have Bill’s talent for getting away with it.”

I wouldn’t call it a talent, it was a generous gift from the MSM.

If the percentage stays the same, but the total Dem voters rise, then there are more youth votes.

JiangxiDad on April 16, 2008 at 8:16 AM

Granted that. Just was curious about the claim that the percentage was the same. Wondering, with the Barry/Hillary wars, if some of those will be totally burnt out by August.
That’d be good for us.

You can’t tell me that within his own party, there are not some high-level Democratic leaders who absolutely hate Bubba Billy’s guts and would just love to see this idiot go away, for good. .

pilamaye on April 16, 2008 at 9:06 AM

The really sad thing about Obama is that he, himself, DOES NOT KNOW that his ideas lack substance and, in general, cannot work out.

Some of today’s Top-of-the-Page Drudge Headlines…

Fight Leaves Democrats Questioning Prospects…
Clinton, Obama set to debate in Philly…
GALLUP: OBAMA SCORES LARGEST LEAD OF YEAR…
LATIMES/BLOOMERG: Clinton losing traction in PA, IN…
WASHPOSTABC: Erosion Of Trust…
Reid: Dem nomination ‘going to be over very soon’…

I wonder if the Clintons are getting ready to “Vince Foster” Barack Obama, maybe in Philadelphia.

He told a crowd in a Pennsylvania suburb that Obama’s supporters are … inexperienced at dealing with political rhetoric. In short — younger voters are saps for a younger, charismatic liar. And he should know:

Yes he should – he got 25% more of 18-29s in 1992 and 50% more of the 18-29s in 1996.

Seems President Clinton has this one right, they are more gullible.

RDuke on April 16, 2008 at 9:53 AM

Interesting…a new ABC News/WaPo Poll shows Billy Jeff’s favorability has dropped almost 10 points since early February, from 55 to 47%. That’s about what he was at 10 years ago.

But what’s scary is that in this year’s President’s Day Poll, Slick was rated in the “Greatest Presidents in History” poll as a better President than:

Thomas Jefferson
Harry Truman
FDR
John Adams
Andrew Jackson

In fact, he was just one point behind George Washington for being the best President of all time. That’s sad.

He was also named the 4th best US President since WW 2.

No doubt there are-but they are stuck between a rock and a hard place, as Billy Jeff has given many of them jobs over the past 16 years, as well helping some of them get elected, and has also brought a truckload of cash into the Democrat Party. And money talks.

PS, I just noticed that I posted the link to this thread by mistake in my post earlier-here’s the correct link to the all time Best Presidents poll. Sorry about that!

True story. When I posted news of Bitterquiddick on Facebook, one of my Obama-supporting friends gave the classic “He didn’t mean that, but even if he did, it’s true” defense, and then said:

i would rather hear a statement i disagree with from a giving person than hear a pious statement from a greedy person.

Whatever that means. Obama supporters have a bad case of tunnel vision.

its vintage duh on April 16, 2008 at 11:09 AM

I have had this theory since his “fairy tale” remarks before South Carolina that Billy Jeff is destroying Sir Hillary’s campaign. He would not want to run the risk of having the #2 of 2 Clinton presidencies. Also what would happen to the legacy he worked so hard for (/sarc) if peace in the middle east broke out during a Hillary Clinton administration?

I love it when I am proven right time after time.

“When they’re 60, they’ll forget something when they’re tired at 11 o’clock at night, too.” This looks like a case of right message, wrong messenger.

Is “my wife is senile, not dishonest” really the right message?

The problem for Democrats is that the only two candidates left in the race have demonstrated a penchant for lying via ridiculous word parsing, and neither of them have Bill’s talent for getting away with it.

Bill’s ability to get away with lying has nothing whatsoever to do with him, and everything to do with his audience. Anybody with any brains could see from his first appearance on the national scene that he was a smarmy Arkansas hustler. In addition, the press not only didn’t call him on his lies, they actively helped him. They’re not doing that anymore, much to his surprise and chagrin.

CraigC on April 16, 2008 at 12:57 PM

I really wonder what would’ve happened in ‘92 had we had the amount of talk radio and if blogs and Fox News had existed back then. The only reason why Shrillary is being called out on her lies is because the MSM is in Obama’s pocket. And the only reason he is being called out is because the blogs and talk radio report them to the point that the MSM has to pick up on them.

I think we would’ve been looking at a bvery different outcome in ‘92 if we had the media we have today. Blogs would’ve absolutely sunk Clinton to the point that H. Ross Perot wouldn’t have even been a factor.

Still, and give credit where it’s due, the Messiah has surpassed the master in triangulation. He’s studdied Bill well, and is besting him, over and over. The Master is jealous.
