New Hillary ad: Obama’s lying about not taking money from big oil

posted at 2:45 pm on April 16, 2008 by Allahpundit

So he is, so he is. The beginning of tonight’s debate will be all about the Bitter but expect this to factor as a subplot, especially as a rejoinder if/when Obama goes after her for her shameless lying about Tuzla. He can’t afford not to; it’s destroying her credibility with the public. The curious thing about his oil nonsense is that it’s such a minor issue, in no way instrumental to his campaign, and yet as you’ll see at the end of his response ad below, he’s still hammering away about having taken no money from oil PACs and lobbyists. The PAC point is irrelevant for the reason suggested in Hillary’s ad — namely, that oil industry employees can raise a lot more for him by bundling — and the lobbyist point, to quote FactCheck, is a case of “hair-splitting.” The smart thing to do would be to simply back away from the claim and eliminate his exposure, but instead he makes the same mistake he made with distorting McCain’s “100 years” comment — he doubles down and ends up getting embarrassed by the press. A weird habit for a “pretty darn good politician.”

How much oil money has Hillary taken, you ask? At last check, almost $90,000 more than Obama. You might hear that mentioned tonight, too.

It is quite entertaining to see Obama and Hillary fighting still. I hope this continues for a long time. I can just picture johnny mack sitting in his chair at night watching the news and laughing at shrillary and BHO killing each other. who needs comedy central when we got these two clowns fighting for the dim nomination…classic

SoCalInfidel on April 16, 2008 at 2:53 PM

He’s also lying about not taking money from pharma and lobbyists.

Chuck Schick on April 16, 2008 at 2:54 PM

All that money from the oil companies and no drilling in the Gulf of Mexico or ANWAR? Shameful that politicians would take money under false pretenses.

rbj on April 16, 2008 at 2:55 PM

Go Hillary go. Save us from the Obamassiah. If J Mac makes you secy of (shrug) HUD or something, that’s great.

You go girl.

I’d turn down a cabinet post in favor of staying in the Senate though. What a dream job that is.

funky chicken on April 16, 2008 at 2:57 PM

So, anyone out there still think these two will end up running mates?

“Bush-Cheney” energy bill? Geez, both of them are getting kind of over-the-top. It’s really pathetic to watch at this point.

RW Wacko on April 16, 2008 at 3:20 PM

Make oil companies pay to create new jobs? Does anyone really hear that and nod their head up and down? I’m truly terrified.

Hillary’s only chance is to go nuclear and discredit Obama to the point he is unelectable.

Obama has to go nuclear on Hillary to make her unelectable.

Nuclear = we can use their own ads against them in the general election.

Is this the best democratic primary evah, or what!

BacaDog on April 16, 2008 at 3:25 PM

Democrats lie? They have to lie, liberalism is a lie. Give them a break.

tarpon on April 16, 2008 at 3:33 PM

Make oil companies pay to create new jobs and clean energy.

Translation: Gasoline will cost even more at the pump.

Senator is a dream job for most people. For Hillary it was never more than a stepping stone.

Gotcha politics?

ericire12 on April 16, 2008 at 3:50 PM

His oil nonsense is all about branding. He can split hairs on this one and get away with it. Shades of gray. The price of gas is going up this summer and he’s trying to

get up

on the issue. No lies really, just setting up the ground.

He’s a player and he and his machine are playing the game to win. That’s all. And they will go to extreme rhetorical measures to work it in their favor. As they should.

Breaking down the wordplay, now that’s the challenge. Who’s more sincere, the Strait Talk Express or this stuff from BO? We’ll be all over it this summer, right AP?

dingbat on April 16, 2008 at 4:18 PM

And while I’m reading this, McCain is doing exceedingly well in an interview with Cavuto. No script, gave very specific answers, as well as giving a general overview of his philosophy on lowering taxes. McCain will be elected in November.

That was a good ad by Killery. Strong and succinct.

What!!
Obama dishonest,say it ain’t so.
Not “Mr. Change”

http://www.zombietime.com/obama_visits_billionaires_row/

According to this article (and many others), Obama’s campaign is claiming he raises his money from small donors:

“When you’re given the gift of advocacy, you don’t sell it to the highest bidder,” Mrs. Obama said. Mrs. Obama stressed how her husband has relied on “regular folks” instead of big donors. Instead of thousand-dollar donations, the Obama campaign has raised millions on small checks of $20 to $50.

Mrs. Obama sees this participatory attitude as a new trend.
Wait just a minute there. If you do the math, on just this one day in the Bay Area, Obama went to four events, three of which had $2,300 minimum donations per ticket, and the other $1,000 minimum per ticket. Each of the events, from the various descriptions, held as many as 400 people (the Getty mansion has a ballroom that reportedly seats at least 300). 400 x $2,300 = $920,000 per event, times three events = $2.76 million, plus the other event, which undoubtedly puts him over $3 million in contributions for this one day alone. And who knows how many other similar days he schedules in other parts of the country.

Michelle Obama (and other Obama campaign spokespeople) aren’t telling the truth. It seems that a signficant portion of Obama’s monthly campaign contributions are coming from “large donors”‘ — i.e. rich people, not just the “$20 to $50″ donations they’re constantly bragging about.

In the Haight, stencils of Barack Obama’s smiling face are decorating the sidewalk. But in real life, he is turning up in more lucrative venues: The candidate will be around here on April 6, at a series of events that includes three $2,300-a-head maximum-strength fundraisers: Sara and Sohaib Abbasi are throwing a luncheon in Atherton; he’ll zip up to Nancy and Bob Farese’s house in Kentfield in mid-afternoon; and proceed from there to Ann and Gordon Getty’s in San Francisco.

(Let it be pointed out that Atherton and Kentfield are two of the cities with the highest-per-capita net worth in the entire United States.)

As far as I can tell, this page has the best description of Billionaire’s Row, and gives the addresses of some of the Gettys’ immediate neighbors. According to various sources, this short stretch of Broadway has more billionaires-per-house than any other neighborhood on Earth. A sample (according to the link):

Norman Stone, heir to insurance tycoon W. Clement Stone, 27xx Broadway.
Peter Haus, Levi Strauss heir, 28xx Broadway. In 1996, Haas’ Levi holdings were valued in a news report at $2.2 billion.
Peter Sperling, U. of Phoenix heir, 28xx Broadway. In 2003 he had about $1.5 billion.
Larry Ellison, Oracle founder, 28xx Broadway. In 2003 Forbes set his worth at $18 billion.
Gordon Getty, Getty Oil heir, 28xx Broadway. In 2003 Forbes Magazine estimated his fortune at $2.1 billion.
George Jewett, Weyerhaeuser heir, 29xx Broadway.

2,300 dollars a head (400 people attended)at Oil baron’s
Gordon Getty’s house.

This is two lies for one.

Taking money from big oil
and
Taking money from from big donors instead of :
Mrs. Obama stressed how her husband has relied on “regular folks” instead of big donors.

Ah yes, “change” we can believe in.

A weird habit for a “pretty darn good politician.”

Weirder still for an “extremely shrewd” one, huh?

Typhoon on April 16, 2008 at 6:47 PM

Shrewd – 1. astute or sharp in practical matters: a shrewd politician.

2. Able to knock competition out after a few punches.
3. Does not make stupid, elitist comments in San Francisco, about middle class America.
4. Knows that arugula is an elitist green, not commonly sold in Iowa.
5. Keeps wildly arrogant wife under a semblance of control, before it’s too late.
6. Doesn’t change positions faster than John Kerry.
7. Is less of a primadona than Mr. Edwards.
8. Has a multitude of friends, who’re not lawyers.
9. Grabs steak first, and fancy Italian ham last.
10. Doesn’t confuse his white VP of a bank grandmother with a trashy trailerpark rogue.
11. Acknowledges middle name, and is proud of it.
12. Acknowldeges white mother, regrets her early death, and is proud of her.
13. Runs on Hope, Unity and Change that is realistically quantifiable.
