Dem Debate: Obama’s Waterloo

posted at 10:30 pm on April 16, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

The last Democratic debate has finally concluded, and perhaps the last chances of ending the primaries early. Thanks to a surprisingly tenacious set of questions for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from ABC moderaters Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous, Barack Obama got exposed over and over again as an empty suit, while Hillary cleaned his clock. However, the big winner didn’t even take the stage tonight.

The first 45 minutes of the scheduled 90-minute debate (which went 15 minutes over) wound up focusing on the series of gaffes and stumbles from both candidates. Hillary more or less defused the Tuzla Dash by admitting she essentially lied about it, trying at one point to use the “sleep deprivation” defense. Obama, however, never did figure out the First Rule of Holes. Once again, he described religion as a refuge people use when government doesn’t work — a fatal misreading of religious faith in America. He not only came up with bad answers, he looked lost and tentative throughout the entire period.

Hillary didn’t let him off the hook, either, not when it came to Crackerquiddick or on the Wright Stuff. Noting that “you choose your pastor, not your family,” Hillary once again pounded Obama for not doing anything about Wright when he had the chance. She also jumped at the chance to note that former Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers was more than just a “neighbor”, as Obama described him. Hillary pointed out that Obama and Ayers worked on a foundation together for years, even after 9/11, even after Ayers said publicly that he didn’t regret his terrorism.

And what was Obama’s response? He compared Ayers to Senator Tom Coburn, who opposes abortion. Of course, Coburn hasn’t bombed abortion clinics, but Obama can’t tell the difference between a Senator and a terrorist. That won’t help him in Middle America either, and Coburn may have a few words for Obama after this night.

By the time Gibson got around to the issues, Obama looked lost and upset. It got worse when Gibson asked about capital-gains tax rates, which Obama has pledged to raise. When Gibson repeatedly pointed out that decreasing the rates actually increased the revenues, Obama simply couldn’t come up with an answer, stammering while trying to change the subject. On guns, both Hillary and Obama stumbled through tortured explanations of how they support a Constitutional right for individuals to own guns while backing gun bans like the one in DC.

The winner of this debate? John McCain. Both Democrats came out of this diminished, but Obama got destroyed in this exchange. If superdelegates had begun to reconsider their support of Obama after Crackerquiddick, they’re speed-dialing Hillary after watching Gibson dismember Obama on national TV tonight.

And kudos to ABC News for taking on both candidates fearlessly. John McCain has to feel grateful not to be included. Don’t forget that you can read through our live blog at any time.

Do you think Pope Benedict can put a special request in with the Big Guy to keep this thing going till the convention?

(Of course by “Big Guy” I mean Rush Limbaugh.)

Waterloo…good choice of words. If I were a Democrat, the decision would be very clear to me and I would vote for Hillary so that she could loose to McCain instead of Obama.

Yet, the Drudge poll shows Obama having won 61-39.

Hear that stampeding noise? That’s the sound of religious holdouts against McCain heading for his side.

Religion as a refuge against poor government? My my, you piss off a whole slew of people with that one, and not just evangelicals.

I hope they both stay in the race long enough to be damaged permanently so neither of them are viable in future races.

Eh, too soon for sober realizations of the disaster to have hit the rank and file. But in the end its not them who be deciding the dem nominee, its the power brokers who have to decide about whether or not its smart to stay with an increasing weak horse.

Didn’t the Drudge Poll also show Ron Paul winning? Its not exactly “scientific”. Plus, even if it were accurate it doesn’t matter if the 61% vote for B. Hussein Obama. Just so long as the 39% switch over and vote for McCain.

Great recap, Ed.

I think Sen. Coburn may be Barry’s ex-friend by tomorrow. So much for bringing people together.

Obama’s Waterloo

Meanwhile, Matt Drudge reports poll results that have Obama beating Clinton 61% to 39%.

It is of the highest importance in the art of detection to be able to recognize out of a number of facts which are incidental and which vital. Otherwise your energy and attention must be dissipated instead of being concentrated.

There’s this thing called the mob mentality that a lot of Obama’s supporters seem to have. I hate to say it, but I think we’re seeing a little sample of how democracies can elect dictators. Are most of Obama’s supporters really behind him because of a reasoned consideration of his positions?

Of course both dems will allow you have a gun, but the guns will need to be triple-locked in a safe, the safe buried in a hole and the hole shipped to a government warehouse under the capitol building. You can have a gun, you just can’t ever use it. Simple.

Elitist don’t do well when asked those oh so mundane questions like capital gains tax and revenue. And BO could no more sever his ties with Ayers than his good friend Tom Coburn. Shudder!
If BO survives this, he will certainly get the nomination. I’m looking forward to the fall.

Tony737 on April 16, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Let’s not forget…the “objective” mainstream media very nearly got the emptiest suits of all, Algore and Jean-Claude Kerry, elected to the highest office in the land in the last 2 erections. (not a typo there, BTW)

They don’t like to lose three times in a row. So they will do all they can to get (whoever) elected, as long as it isn’t McCain.

I’ve noticed that about Gibson lately, I think he has been beginning to see the light.

atxcowgirl on April 16, 2008 at 10:59 PM

Nothing was better than the payroll tax increase issue. After Clinton swore NO tax increses for those who earn less than 250K, Gibson asked Obama to clarify that he agreed.

Gibson then set the table and Hillary took graciously, calling Obama out on his proposal to raise the payroll tax increase for those who make over 75K a year, to which Charlie basically admonished Obama as a tax increase for the middle class.

It was priceless watching Obama stammer, and being caught in a blatantlie, yet again.

I agree with Ed, even though I despise Hillary as well.

This statement of fact pretty much sums it all up as far as the debate goes.

Hillary drank Obama’s milkshake! She drank it up!

Half way to Denver — ‘fore I realized.
Well I trashed the rednecks — behind billionaire doors,
Some blog biddie betrayed me — when Hill rains she pours!

Now it’s a dirty long ride down the donkey trail,
And the channels change as the newsies wail,
Let ‘em quote Wright’s wrongs, I’ll just glow like the Grail,
– — – — – All the way to Denver!

Well I got to Denver y’know — it took sixteen years
And there was Bill — I smacked his red ears
Some bimbo said “Climber witches — you’re all the same.
Gal, he’s your broomstick” — but I felt unashamed.

Yeah it’s a dirty long ride down the donkey trail
As your name burns saddles you get cash on the nail
‘N you gotta ride dirty, gal, and never be stale

Consider this. When questioned about Wright, a racist, conspiracy theorist, he compares him to his own Grandmother (who helped raise him). When questioned about Ayers, an unapologetic terrorist, he compares him to Tom Coburn, a U.S. Senator (trying to stand up for the rights of the unborn).

He would rather slander someone close to him than actually repudiate someone worthy of it.

Taken together these equivalences are extremely telling, and extremely worrying. He thinks he is being slick when he is transparent as glass and repellent to boot.

Dr. Manhattan on April 17, 2008 at 12:49 AM

Once again, he described religion as a refuge people use when government doesn’t work — a fatal misreading of religious faith in America.

Maybe, but it might be an honest reading of either Michelle or Barack himself. Both have indicated that they don’t think the government is working for them, that CHANGE (TM) is needed. If they have that feeling, and they feel that they and their fellow parishioners turned to TUCC and the Reverend Wright to assuage that feeling, then there it is, right there.

And maybe the prevalence of gun ownership and abuse in the inner city is the result of those feelings. Maybe the choices of targets for drive-by shootings in LA is the result of those feelings. Maybe all those urban union rants against NAFTA, and even Barack’s own position on NAFTA, are the result of those feelings.

Maybe Barack has it right — for him.

Trying to respond here, without political prejudice. Don’t know if it will come out that way. I know plenty of honest Joe’s on that side of the aisle. They believe. I don’t get that impression from Obama. When I hear him speak I keep thinking of the fella that tried to sell me something I didn’t want. He just kept on, and on, and on. I didn’t buy it. It wasn’t because the product was bad, it was the feeling that the fella was trying to snooker me. Obama just doesn’t convince me that he believes in anything, other then flim-flam that is.

Limerick on April 17, 2008 at 1:05 AM

I’d hold off calling this Obama’s Waterloo — not because the candidate wasn’t woefully maladroit on several questions you have to assume he never expected a non Fox News TV interviewer to ask, but because his followers are so fanatical this won’t damage their passion for him in the least.

He won’t lose his core support, so then it’s a matter of not turning a bad night into a train wreck, by compounding his problems with follow-up gaffes between now and the Tuesday election. Remember, despite the Obamaniacs howls about ABC now being part of the VRWC and even taking into account Stephanopolous acting as Hillary’s hitman, the majority of the big media folks are still in Obama’s corner, so that anything but a free fall in the final vote totals in Pennsylvania, will be spun as showing Barak wasn’t damaged by tonight’s debate, in the same way Obama was using polls on Tuesday to show people didn’t mind his “bitterness” remarks.

They did, and that, plus the Ayres and Social Security questions in the fall will hurt him, if he makes it that far. But if he does make it there, all this will be just a memory in the papers and on TV, and it will be up to McCain not to give the big media outlets any openings to conjure up pre-election scandals that they’ll hope will take the voters’ minds off Obama’s problems. He might be able to do it, but hopefully he’s not counting on his friends in the media to do to Obama in October what ABC did to him tonight.

jon1979 on April 17, 2008 at 1:07 AM

Don’t count Obama out just yet. His followers are relentless and loyal to a level that is borderline fanatical> Obama can do no wrong in their eyes and they’ll blame his poor performance on the “unfair” and “hatchet job” questions asked by the moderators at ABC News rather than on Obama himself. They will donate like crazy to help him after tonight. Just watch, he’ll get a spike in donations after tonight.

Yakko77 on April 17, 2008 at 1:18 AM

Just watch, he’ll get a spike in donations after tonight.

And kudos to ABC News for taking on both candidates fearlessly.

Can’t go along with you on that. Do you get kudos for doing your job? Finding it extraordinary that the media did it’s job for once isn’t deserving of kudos. It’s deserving of never-ending condemnation, as usual. ABC and the rest of the MSM has an election to win. As superdelegates, they have a nominee to pick, a campaign to run, an election to win, and a country to rule.

I was thinking to myself in the first half of the debate that Democratic voters deserve better candidates than Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. They are just not good candidates.

terryannonline on April 17, 2008 at 12:34 AM

I suppose everyone thinks “normal” is what they grew up with and become accustomed to. In that sense, the Dems have two bad candidates. But if you go back just a little further, or talk to someone your parents age, the mere fact that two socialists are running, both unqualified in terms of prior experience, and both supported by people who see nothing other than gender or race, you may begin to see how truly extraordinary, and potentially catastrophic this is for the country. Believe me, this is so much more than just two bad candidates. It’s a defining moment in American political and social history.

None of the criticisms of Obama matter to the Liberals. They’ll love him no matter what. It’s the independent moderates who, (when they take their heads out of their @ss’z and start to pay attention), will have to ponder all the Leftist connections, Black Liberation Theology, and Liberal Secular condescention of mainstream America the Obama family believes in. Then we’ll see some interesting polling.

davecatbone on April 17, 2008 at 7:25 AM

Obama is as shallow a man as I have ever seen. The color of his skin permits him to make the kind of mistakes that would destroy any other candidate. He has become the proverbial “sacred cow.” The one who cannot be criticized lest those who criticize him be forever branded a racist. Well call me a racist I guess. For a Harvard graduate, he is an incredibly stupid man.

This comment by Andrew Sullivan probably explains the Drudge poll results:

His affect is total exhaustion, alas, as if being pummeled with every Rovian tactic has beaten the life out of him. And he is being pummeled by the ABC hosts as well. One reason I like the guy is that he is still human; politics hasn’t killed his soul.

Got that? He’s getting killed up there, but that just makes Excitable Andy love him all the more.

sdd on April 17, 2008 at 7:26 AM

His entire life has been about racial preferences, and special “get out of jail free cards”. It got him into Harvard, it got him a win in electoral politics in IL, it got him into the US Senate, and it allowed him to mount a viable candidacy for President. He’s not stupid. He went with the system that nourished him his entire life, and that always worked– until now. In any case, what was his choice? To go straight at this point? Too late. He made his bargain with the devil, now the devil is demanding his due.

Faust you genius!

Return of the Carpetbaggers?

Yet, the Drudge poll shows Obama having won 61-39.

That’s a reader poll and the only tentative conclusion one can draw from it is that there are more Obama fans than Hillary fans reading Drudge.

ED Once again, he described religion as a refuge people use when government doesn’t work

OBAMA then politically they end up focusing on those things that are constant, like religion.

The reality is, his first quote was in reference to politics. The funny thing is, Karl Rove built an entire politcal strategy around EXACTLY what Obama said. If you were either A) Brighter or B) more honest, you’d see this.

This is why this whole taken quotes and beating them to death is so tiresome and infact odious. Ed, come on. You’re twisting his words to make it sound like he believes government is on a higher plain than religion… more important.

This is such an outright misrepresentation, I don’t know how you can feel good about it. It’s such BS. And that’s all you guys do on here. Take statements and misrepresent them so the person (mostly Obama) fits this storyline you’re shilling. It’s the lowest form of politics. Great work you’re doing here, you should really not be proud of it.

Suppose, for a moment, that what you say is correct (although it isn’t.) Why would a little bunch of word-twisting, discriminating people on this website have much effect on the good sense of the Am. people–those that don’t twist words or look to ensnare Obama with his own?

Do you really think Obama’s candidacy is in jeopardy because people at HA treat him unfairly? President Obama has much more to worry about than a few disgruntled right-wingers over here. And if you think HA is just a small example of a larger phenomenon that is being played over and over in different parts of the blogosphere and media and American public, then maybe your assumptions about him need to be questioned. Also, is Hillary and her half of the Dem party also right-wing word-twisters? It’s beginning to sound like you’re more and more alone in this Tom.

50% of Americans oppose the Democrats, 40-50% of the Democrats oppose Obama. That’s the majority view.

What’s ?

“Operation Chaos”

Please, anyone…!

Probably not, but that’s beside the point. The point is REALITY. And when I see someone like ED, who I once thought was rational, make a living off twisting it to feed political agendas, it pisses me off.
