Should we get outraged over a parody?

Conservatives have a reputation for not having a sense of humor. That’s mostly unfair; most conservatives (and liberals) I know have lives outside of politics and love to laugh as much as anyone else. However, when it comes to laughing at ourselves, both liberals and conservatives have a bit of a blind spot — and a budding controversy over a parody version of the Wall Street Journal may prove it yet again:
When it comes to conservative women, liberals are a perverse and hypocritical bunch. As a general rule, they either insist that conservative women are hideously ugly or alternately get down in the gutter and aim everything from crude comments, to porn fantasies, to rape threats at the very same women.
Meanwhile, the very same libs who are the first ones to yell “sexist” at the top of their lungs when the mildest gibe is tossed at a woman on the Left, either keep their mouths shut or laugh along at the most grotesque, sexual insults aimed at conservative women.
For the latest example of this, you can head over to the Huffington Post, where they smirk along with this graphic (which I’ve blurred) that is featured in a piece of garbage called “My Wall Street Journal.”
I’ll skip the WSJ-style sketch of a topless Ann Coulter in a thong, to which John Hawkins so vehemently objects. It’s tasteless and tacky, and John has a good point about the hypocrisy of liberals including it in the spoof. It doesn’t even make much sense as a parody of the WSJ, one of the most sober of publications. It might make a good satire of Britain’s The Sun, which regularly features such topless women, and certainly that’s the reference for the tabloidy reputation of new WSJ owner Rupert Murdoch, but most American readers will look at this and wonder what the satirists have in mind.
If Hawkins ran photoshopped pictures of Hillary Clinton topless to satirize her attempts to reach white male voters in the Rust Belt, can we suppose that the Huffington Post — which giggles with glee at the Coulter sketch — would react supportively? I’m with John in guessing that the liberal writers at HuffPo would fall all over themselves to castigate John for demeaning Hillary as nothing more than a sex object. I don’t exactly consider this a “sick porn fantasy”, though.
Compounding this is the report in the New York Times that a mysterious man with a corporate American Express card tried buying out all of the parody papers at Los Angeles newsstands yesterday. Obviously someone wanted to get copies of it off the street, but that’s almost worthy of a parody in itself. Doesn’t it make the parody more lucrative when it sells? That strategy only encourages more reprints and funds future efforts.
Perhaps rather than working ourselves into a lather over this rather prepubescent example of political satire, we should be laughing — at its authors. If drawing naked breasts is what they consider trenchant political commentary, then the creators of My Wall Street Journal have indicted themselves, not Ann Coulter or Rupert Murdoch — especially with their weirdly self-congratulatory YouTube hosted at HuffPo, with a fake Rupert Murdoch getting exercised over a fake WSJ. Point out the hypocrisy and the locker-room mentality of the satire to be sure, but let’s not give it power it most definitely does not deserve.

Without even reading the articles, I can tell, just from Ed’s post that I won’t get it.
rockhauler on April 15, 2008 at 8:48 AM
It also has far too much meat on her bones.
Yep, and the fool who tried to buy them up.
Mr. Bingley on April 15, 2008 at 8:52 AM
Well, if you don’t want to give it “power it most definitely does not deserve” then no conservative blogger should have made a publicity out of it.
On the other hand, Conservatives do have humor.
Consider Ann Coulter for example.
I like her. If I’m the King of these United States, I’d appoint her as my Prime Minister.
She’s funny, but I have a problem with her:
She’s too skinny. I wish she’d eat more.
She always reminds me that there is starvation in America not in Africa.
Indy Conservative on April 15, 2008 at 8:57 AM
It would be silly to be outraged. The proper response is to make a parody NYT.
AbaddonsReign on April 15, 2008 at 8:57 AM
After reading your post, Ed, I notice you use both the terms parody and satire. I would like to make a point about the usage of each. Parody typically is done for the sake of mockery or humor, usually with entertainment as the goal. Satire is more often used to make a political, philosophical, or religious point, and usually has, at some level, a desire to improve something as a result.
If I may, think of Family Guy as typical parody, and South Park as satire. They are clearly differentiated attempts.
According to the content of the images provided, this falls under pure parody, due to the fact that it is neither underhandedly informative, nor is it delivering any tangible argument to an issue. It is pure mockery for the sake of it. That may be why some are taking more offense to it than usual. The Onion is laughed at by both sides, even though it typically leans to the left(it does, after all, come from my hometown of Madison).
MadisonConservative on April 15, 2008 at 9:01 AM
Not surprising at all. The mantra of the left is now and forever has been “Do as I say, not as I do”. They prove this over and over.
BackseatDriver on April 15, 2008 at 9:01 AM
Well, the headline about President Bush abolishing Death & Taxes made me laugh. Heh. Other than that, it’s more of the same from the left. Not very funny and in poor taste. I do agree with Ed, if drawing Ann Coulter with big breasts and a dis-proportioned body is what they call intelligent humor, the joke’s on them.

Did anyone read Bob Herberts defense of Obama? It is a much better paradoy then this one:
“Obama should have just said that white people in small towns are racist, ’cause they are ‘er wait no there not. But if maybe they are racist they just need Obama to be a leader?”
What a joke!!!!

Dude. I just threw up a bit in my mouth.

If there’s stuff in there that’s actually funny, the parody will have some legs — a satire done over 25 years ago of Murdoch’s New York Post was like tht. If it’s printed “comedy” rants in the style of a Bill Maher or Janine Garafalo routine — where the comedy is only funny to those already in the choir, — then this will die a quiet death after a day or two, when all the people who think a line like “Ann Coulter is a c—” is the height of satirical wit have bought the thing and nobody else gives a damn.
jon1979 on April 15, 2008 at 9:11 AM
I thought high comedy for Liberals was blackface.

The drawing itself should gie you a good idea of how talentless the person is..Has the artist ever taken a look at the shape of Ann’s body? She would probably love the curves but as it is, she is as thin as a pencil..I looked at that picture and figured if they couldn’t get that right, why bother wasting my time..
Pam on April 15, 2008 at 9:19 AM
And what did you do, Ed, by posting it? Chances are I never would have seen it otherwise. I think the whole thing is pretty sick.
Connie on April 15, 2008 at 9:26 AM
This just proves that the Left’s sense of humor is not that well defined. Anyone that’s ever seen Al Frankin can attest to that, though.
Much ado about nothing.
lodestonejames on April 15, 2008 at 9:27 AM
Yep, I don’t get it. (I must be one of those humorless conservatives.)
Perhaps because I refuse to be offended, or perhaps it is juvenile to be fascinated by nekid wimen, or just not interested in a childish, never ending exchange of insult?
The NYTimes thinks their fortunes will improve by slamming News Corp and Murdock? Good luck with that, dude.
Note to NYT: News Corp and Murdock is not the problem causing your deteriorating fortunes.
rockhauler on April 15, 2008 at 9:28 AM
The left’s parody of serious discussion is much funnier.
Dusty on April 15, 2008 at 9:36 AM
No kidding. In my opinion a more proper satire cartoon would have had her really scrawny with lots of bones showing rather than short and chubby. Maybe it’s a fantasy cartoon and represents what the artist wants her to look like.
jmarcure on April 15, 2008 at 9:40 AM
The editor Tony Hendra had a good run at Spy Magazine in the 80’s spoofing the masters of the universe. Trump was at war with the magazine after being routinely referred to as a “short fingered vulgarian”. Hendra also was quite funny as Ian Faith in Spinal Tap.

Just what we need, more fake news.
ninjapirate on April 15, 2008 at 9:41 AM
SICK, SICK, SICK… As an old man who often dreams of ANNIE, way too much meat on the bones, and the breasts are much more FIRM and PERKY in real life…
pueblo1032 on April 15, 2008 at 9:43 AM
Liberals have the intellectual capacity of children so why would you expect their humor to be anything but childish? They are clueless how thinks work, were things come from and how they get there. Like all children they know mommy and daddy will always provide food and shelter and say that they are the smartest and prettiest in the group. As adults they have to turn to big daddy government to do the coddling. My problem is why did conservatives let them take over or do all conservatives let their children control their lives?
jmarcure on April 15, 2008 at 9:48 AM
It’s a photo-shopped drawing. Ann’s head on Katie Couric’s body.

Did Eliot Spitzer draw that sketch of Annie?
CyberCipher on April 15, 2008 at 10:35 AM
I was going to say HuffPo; but actually, they are both pretty-much self-parodic, at this point.
urbancenturion on April 15, 2008 at 10:38 AM
The Coulter “parody” was not funny. It was just mean. And I’ve never fantasized her having boobs quite like those.
snaggletoothie on April 15, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Well, whatever. I laughed at the “Bush abolishes death, taxes” fake headline.
amkun on April 15, 2008 at 10:45 AM
It is a pretty stupid parody. I was more offended by SNL’s portrayal of Gen Petraeus as an Obama lover. That really irked me.
Tazz 55 on April 15, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Lefty humor, once you take away the potty jokes and the seventh grade sex jokes, pretty much boils down to them laughing at how much smarter they are than anyone else.
Which, for anyone with actual intelligence, isn’t really funny at all.
Since lefties are always the dimmest bulbs in the bunch, otherwise, why would they be lefties?
NoDonkey on April 15, 2008 at 11:43 AM
If we become outraged over parody like this, we will become the “the political party of perpetual outrage” and we’ll be needing our very own “rage boy.”
My collie says:
When confronted with this kind of garbage (that purportedly passes for parody), I believe that the appropriate response is stony silence accompanied by a stern look. I would not lend the material any dignity by rewarding it with the recognition afforded by a verbal protest, much less “outrage.”

It is funny but I think most of the credit will have to go to Terry Jones since you would have to be familiar with The Sun or the News of the World to understand what they are actually mocking. Americans will miss the point since they aren’t familiar with the Murdoch tabloid format… but then Ed reads The Sun and the News of the World (per posts passum) so who knows.
lexhamfox on April 15, 2008 at 1:08 PM
Hey, I laugh at John Stewart when he skewers conservatives, so I figure I have a sense of humor.
But some things cross the line.
Depicting a woman as topless to show your disagreement with her politics is so far over the line that it is criminal. It reeks of intimidation tactics.
I am not joking either. Coulter ought to sue these people for slander.

How come so few of the conservative punditbabes™ do the conservative thing and get married? Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Mary Katherine Ham, and a couple others come to mind. If I’m not mistaken, Michelle is the only one of the bunch to have a traditional marriage.
rokemronnie on April 15, 2008 at 3:34 PM
I work in ad sales for The Journal. Another 250,000 copies of even a parody in circulation creates brand awareness. Heck, maybe some folks will pick up a copy of The Journal (you know, the real one) and enjoy the read ;)
Other than that…it’s not nice to fool with Mr. Murdoch…
